THE HILL
— Senior Democrats tout achievements as party’s generational divide widens – SCOTT WONG (DIERSEN: All my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes support the federal government’s “up-or-out” policy for its employees who are non-veteran, White, and/or male. Will political parties impose “up-or-out” policies like the federal government has for its non-veteran White male employees? For example, you would be “out” if you do not make a) township/ward party chairman or municipal/township/ward elected office by age 25, b) county party chairman or county elected office by age 30, c) state central committee member or state representative by age 35, d) state party officer or state senator by age 40, e) state party chairman, statewide office, U.S. representative, or U.S. senator by age 45, and f) RNC/DNC chairman, state governor, or U.S. President by age 50.)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— As Supreme Court ruling threatens labor, teacher union leader says it’s been adding members. . .SEIU-Healthcare Illinois wants higher minimum wage – Rick Pearson
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-met-morning-spin-monday-edition-20180629-story.html
— Impact of tax changes in 2018 – Elliot Raphaelson (DIERSEN: Government should encourage marriage and homeownership. Therefore, Roskam should increase the $10,000 SALT cap to $20,000 for married filing jointly.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/sns-201806192045–tms–savingsgctnzy-b20180619-20180619-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Other changes to the tax code will also impact taxpayer decisions. For example, starting in 2018, there will be a deduction cap of $10,000 on the amount of state and local income and property taxes, known as SALT. This limit is per-tax return, not per person. As a result, many couples who itemized in prior years will no longer have sufficient deductions to do so. For example, a couple that is eligible for the $10,000 deduction will need an additional $14,000 in deductions for charity, mortgage interest, medical expenses and so forth in order for itemizing to be worthwhile. The bottom line is that many couples will be using the standard deduction in 2018 who, in the past, would itemize.)
— The sorry history of journalists murdered in the U.S. for doing their job – Pat Morrison (DIERSEN: I should write a book about those who have done the most to stop me from putting GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails together and sending them out.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/commentary/ct-perspec-newsroom-journalists-murder-fake-news-trump-charlie-hebdo-0702-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Every day, and now more and more each year, newspaper reporters and radio, TV and online news reporters across this country get hate mail, hate email, even death threats. Some are preposterous; some are all too plausible. Within hours of Thursday’s murders, Buzzfeed writer Anne Helen Petersen tweeted, “I’ve had people email death threats, threaten to cut my dog’s throat, tell me I’d pay for my fake news.” We get these threats, but we never get used to them. A healthy tension between the press and politicians is as old as the country, and actually an important part of its governance. Once in a while, it gets dangerously, disastrously unhealthy. The second president of the United States, John Adams, threw newspapermen in prison under laws that, like English law, were broad enough to imprison people for almost any criticism of the government. Editors, publishers, a member of Congress and Benjamin Franklin’s publisher (who was also his grandson) were put behind bars, and countless other newspapermen were intimidated into silence, which is exactly what the targeting of journalists is meant to do: to shut them up. The election of Thomas Jefferson and the affirmation of the First Amendment soon put an end to this persecution. And today we have the sneering and insults from a presidential candidate who became the president of the United States. His “fake news” retorts try to diminish stories he doesn’t like, and the “scum” journalists who reported them. When he calls the press “the enemy of the people,” he is deploying the same term used by Nazi Germany and Stalin’s Soviet Union to demonize the leader’s own enemies.)

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
— Sen. Duckworth: Maternity leave over, will bring nursing baby to work with her – Lynn Sweet (DIERSEN: During the early 1990s, to help GAO a) hire, retain, and promote young women and b) to get rid of its employees who smoked (overwhelmingly old White men), GAO gutted the smoking room in its Chicago office and turned it into a lactation room.)
https://chicago.suntimes.com/columnists/sen-duckworth-maternity-leave-bring-nursing-baby-work/
— FBI: Man threatened July 4 attack at parade in Cleveland
https://chicago.suntimes.com/news/fbi-federal-bureau-of-investigation-cleveland-arrest-parade/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Federal authorities say they’ve arrested a man who talked about setting off a bomb at a Fourth of July parade in Cleveland and attacking people watching fireworks. Officials said Monday that the man who’s an American citizen often expressed his support for al-Qaida and said he wanted to kill members of the U.S. military. Authorities have charged Demetrius Pitts with attempted support of a terrorist organization. There are no court records listing an attorney for Pitts, who lives in the Cleveland area and was arrested Sunday. FBI Special Agent Stephen Anthony says Pitts scouted out locations this past week for a site to attack in downtown Cleveland. Anthony says it’s not clear how close Pitts was to carrying out his threats, but he says authorities couldn’t sit back and wait.)

— New perk in the HR arsenal: An on-site DePaul MBA – LYNNE MAREK (DIERSEN: I earned an MBA from Loyola in 1976, a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul in 1980, and a master’s degree in financial markets and trading from IIT in 1997. My Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates at IRS 1971-1980 and GAO 1980-1997 always hinted/implied/argued/shouted that the graduate courses that I took a) were not job-related, b) did not help me carry out my job duties, c) were taken by me to get a job in the private sector, and d) were a distraction. To keep their jobs and to get promoted, my Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates in the federal government focused on getting rid of federal employees who were Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran.)
http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20180629/ISSUE01/180629833
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Chicago companies in cutthroat competition for employees are dangling another perk: on-site MBA programs, courtesy of DePaul University. Walgreens Boots Alliance, Northern Trust and the parent of Blue Cross & Blue Shield are among employers that have paired with DePaul to offer discounted graduate programs—minus the after-work rush to campus. This is a “carrot” that companies can offer, says Suzanne Depeder, associate vice president for enrollment, management and marketing at DePaul. “As the economy has heated up, so does the job market, so companies are looking at ways of attracting and retaining their talent,” she says. It’s a plus for universities, too, especially those like DePaul facing enrollment and revenue declines. While many schools have tried on-site executive education, DePaul’s Kellstadt Graduate School of Business has been more successful than most, attracting nearly 1,000 students and millions in company-subsidized tuition dollars since starting in 2013. Still, there’s a push-pull in such partnerships, and they don’t always survive. DePaul, the largest Catholic university in the U.S., with a total student headcount of nearly 23,000, saw its graduate schools gain students last year, even as its overall enrollment continued a six-year decline. DePaul cut 62 employees, or 3.5 percent of its nonfaculty staff, in June to “better position the university for the future,” it said. The Master of Business Administration is considered a must by many corporate climbers, and their employers often foot a portion of the cost. Eighty-five percent of U.S. employers plan to hire MBAs this year, down from 91 percent last year, according to survey results released in June by the Graduate Management Admission Council. The decline reflects more students seeking related, specialized master’s degrees in subjects like data science and computer engineering. Since DePaul launched its on-site Corporate Employer Outreach, or CEO, program, it has produced 421 graduates. An additional 374 are enrolled now, plus 155 coming this fall, Depeder says. An MBA from DePaul costs about $76,000, but the cost varies for on-site corporate cohorts, depending on the number of students, she says. Companies hosting DePaul’s program can tailor it to their business needs and knit together workers from disparate parts of their businesses. Employees miss out on networking with peers at other companies, but that might not be a bad thing in terms of retention.)

By then, I had worked for GAO for almost 9 years, I had worked for IRS for almost 9 years, I had become a licensed CPA in 1981, I had passed the Certified Internal Auditor examination on my first attempt in 1981, I had earned a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul in 1980, I had passed the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979, and I had earned an MBA from Loyola in 1976.)

BREITBART

https://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2018/07/01/federal-government-resources-used-promote-lgbt-pride/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Breitbart News tracked down some of LGBT Pride Month events across federal agencies, including National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), the Veterans Administration (VA), Library of Congress (LOC) and, the National Park Service (NPS): — The VA decided the best way to make sure veterans in the LGBT community feel comfortable seeking medical care was to put on a drag show, which traditionally is a parade of men dressing in women’s clothing and make-up. National Public Radio (NPR) reported the VA was taking a “particularly fabulous approach” for its Pride Month event, organized by the White River Junction VA Medical Center in Vermont. “Welcome to the gayest show on Earth,” the MC said to open the show in NPR’s report. “But first, I just have to say the VA is here for its queers, and we are proud to serve all veterans,” the MC said. — The CIA celebration was extensive and overseen in Washington, DC, by its new director, Gina Haspel, according to its website: During our keynote event held at CIA Headquarters the first week of June, Director Haspel introduced Major General (MG) Tammy Smith, the highest ranking and first openly gay general in US history. Director Haspel described MG Smith, saying, “She refused to give in to discrimination, stayed riveted on her goals, and proceeded to blaze a trail that will go down in the history books. Today, Major General Smith is widely recognized as a pioneer in helping LGBT men and women to fully contribute—and fully belong—to the Army family.” This event is one of several CIA activities celebrating Pride Month, including participation in the Capital DC Pride Festival and the 7th annual IC Pride Summit, of which CIA was a founder. — The LOC said its collection of works by and about the LGBT community makes it a year-round celebration but in June the library featured discussions with authors who wrote books about homosexual romance. “The library’s month-long celebration demonstrates how lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans have strengthened our country, by using their talent and creativity to help create awareness and goodwill,” the LOC website states. — NASA joined the San Francisco LGBT Pride Parade in June and also had a booth. A description of the event said: Please, stop by and say hello, take some funky photos using our infrared camera station. Learn about the autonomous helicopter that will soon be exploring the Red Planet, provided by our Aeromechanics division. Take a dive into a brilliant coral reef, brought to you by the Earth Science division. Get up close and personal with some flies and much more from our folks in the Biosciences division. Do not forget to grab a swag bag while supplies last. — The National Park Service has a striking photograph on its website of NPS employees — federal employees — marching with rainbow flags and celebrating the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York City that was the scene of a violent clash between patrons and police in 1969 that is credited with starting the “gay rights movement” and was made a national historic monument during the Obama administration. This year NPS, according to a blog on its website, is already looking forward to next year’s Pride Month: June is Pride Month, and while Stonewall National Monument shares the unforgettable story of the 1969 riots year-round, this year kicks off a special countdown to World Pride in 2019. This annual event, which will be hosted by New York City in 2019, is the largest global Pride celebration. It will mark the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising and its pivotal role as the birthplace of the modern lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer civil rights movement.)
