— Illinois Republicans go all in for Trump at state convention – RICK PEARSON and JEREMY GORNER (COMMENT: Illinois Republicans anxiously await the Illinois Republican Party (IRP) a) to issue a detailed press release on the convention and b) to post on its website its new platform and its 12 new resolutions. At the convention, there was very strong support for Trump and for Dean White for IRP National Committeeman, but there very few delegates were from DuPage County. IRP chairman Don Tracy spoke vehemently against direct election of IRP State Central Committee (SCC) members. Many of the delegates who I spoke with had been strongly lobbied by opponents of direct election against direct election. Tracy’s IRP State Convention Platform and Resolutions Committee (PRC) killed direct election. Illinois Republicans who want direct election are overwhelmingly conservative. Illinois Republicans who oppose direct election are overwhelming moderate, that is, they reject some, many, most, if not all the planks in the Republican Party platform. It seems that to get PRC members to kill direct election, those who oppose direct election a) loaded the PRC with members who oppose direct election or could be made to oppose direct election and b) dumped efforts to move the platform to the left. I was appointed to the PRC even though I have always promoted direct election. But that appointment was made before those who oppose direct election knew that major efforts were going to be made to promote direct election. Therefore, I was removed from the PRC before its first meeting. The Democrat news media at the convention again demonstrated its hostility toward me. I have attended as a delegate and as the GOPUSA Illinois Editor all the IRP State Conventions since 2000. The 2020 convention was by Zoom. The last big push for direct election was at the 2008 convention.)

On Saturday, the party added a plank “confirming the immutable biological sex of humans and the protection of women” and opposing gender treatments as well as “all efforts to validate transgender identity,” The platform adopted by more than 500 delegates at the convention also attacked the Democratic Party for eliminating cash bail, contending it “opposes law and order and law enforcement.” . . . The only contentious note in the festivities occurred when former Lake County GOP chairman Mark Shaw was twice overwhelmingly rejected in votes from the convention floor in his bid to become the state’s new Republican National Committeeman, replacing Richard Porter, who is term limited. Shaw, a Trump delegate and a “senior adviser” to the presidential candidate, has a controversial party history. Once viewed as a grassroots supporter, his attempts to maneuver into the RNC job were rejected by delegates who viewed him as too establishment. Dean White of St. Charles, a construction company owner and a member of the Republican State Central Committee, was ultimately named national committeeman after Shaw dropped out. Hardin County GOP Chair Rhonda Belford, who chairs the Republican County Chairs’ Association, was voted as national committeewoman, replacing Demetra DeMonte.)
