DEKALB DAILY JOURNAL
— Would legal marijuana bring dispensaries to DeKalb, Sycamore? Mayors weigh in DeKalb, Sycamore mayors weigh in on recreational marijuana legalization – KELSEY RETTKE (DIERSEN: Needless-to-say, each and every mayor and each and every city council member in Illinois and each and every candidate for the aforesaid positions should state on the record that they will vote to pass ordinances a) to “opt out” of the retail sale of pot and b) to impose zoning restrictions on the commercial growing of pot. The Wheaton City Council is seeking applicants for city’s vacant North District City Council position. Applicants are asked to submit a statement identifying the three most important issues that they believe the city needs to address in the next two years as well as their opinion on how those issues could be addressed. Needless-to-say, applicants should state that discouraging pot usage is one of Wheaton’s most important issues. According to Capitol Fax’s Rich Miller, “Dude, I got news for you: Cannabis is already in your neighborhood. Your neighbors are consuming it, perhaps even right this moment. And most of your neighbors want it legalized.” SEE: https://capitolfax.com/2019/05/07/moylan-apparently-doesnt-realize-that-people-use-cannabis-now/)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: If Illinois lawmakers do decide to legalize marijuana use by adults by 2020, DeKalb Mayor Jerry Smith says it will be a community decision on whether a dispensary is allowed to open in his city. Smith was in Springfield on Wednesday lobbying on behalf of the city with the Illinois Municipal League. He says he expects the legalization proposal will pass.)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— DECEMBER 24, 2003 FLASHBACK: Church arsonist receives 39 years – Ted Gregory (DIERSEN: Palinski was a registered Republican voter in my precinct. According to this article, Palinski’s “life started unraveling when he began using marijuana, cocaine, heroin and other drugs as a teenager.” I should try to arrange for Palinski to speak at public hearings in Wheaton about the evils of pot.)
https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-xpm-2003-12-24-0312240124-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A Wheaton man who was admonished by a judge as a “selfish heartbreaker” received 39 years in prison Tuesday for setting fires that destroyed a Catholic church and damaged his next-door neighbor’s home, and for trying to arrange the murder of a prosecution witness in those cases. Adam Palinski, 22, a college student with a history of emotional instability, was sentenced by DuPage County Judge Perry Thompson. Palinski broke the hearts of parishioners at Wheaton’s St. Michael Catholic Church, which Palinski and his family attended, as well as the hearts of his neighbors and relatives, Thompson said. Thompson noted at Tuesday’s sentencing that family members testified Palinski is loving, courteous and religious. “Had any of those good qualities been present on the days in question, we would not be here today,” Thompson said. “Your dreams are going to be deferred for a long time.” In November, juries found Palinski guilty of arson, aggravated arson and solicitation of murder for hire. Aided by a videotaped confession and audio tapes of wiretapped conversations, prosecutors said Palinski set fire to the inside of the church about 2 a.m. March 18, 2002, after a night of drinking. The church, which was destroyed, is offering masses for the estimated 2,700 families in its school gymnasium. St. Michael’s leaders estimate the cost of rebuilding to be $9.75 million. About $4.5 million has been raised. After setting the church ablaze, Palinski splashed gasoline on his neighbor’s home and ignited it, prosecutors said. It went out before the residents awoke that morning. No one was injured. On one of the tapes, when investigators asked why Palinski set the fires, he replied: “No particular reason. I was bored.” Five months after his arrest, Palinski was charged with trying to find a hit man to kill a friend who obtained informal admissions of guilt from Palinski by wearing a court-approved listening device. At Tuesday’s sentencing, DuPage County Assistant State’s Atty. Joseph Ruggiero, who prosecuted the case with Steven Knight, said Palinski was a liar whose life started unraveling when he began using marijuana, cocaine, heroin and other drugs as a teenager.)

https://capitalresearch.org/article/dont-trust-the-messenger-part-4/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Conservatives and right-leaning moderates know that in order to get the “full story” they should read not only the Wall Street Journal and National Review, but also the Washington Post and The Atlantic. After all, it’s important to know how the other half of America thinks and feels about the news of the day. However, the media landscape isn’t what it used to be—where once there were nominally nonpartisan broadcast and print media, new nonprofit newsrooms backed by big liberal foundation resources have risen, even as conservative platforms have folded. But that doesn’t mean conservative readers and writers should resign themselves to obsolescence: a combination of foundation giving and visionary leadership could breathe new life into conservative and even less-partisan journalism, while providing the stability and flexibility necessary for new outlets to thrive.)
