CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— FRONT PAGE TOP OF FOLD WITH COLOR PHOTO OF PRITZKER: With Pritzker win, pot legalization is now in legislators’ hands, but not all are on board – Robert McCoppin (DIERSEN: If you promote pot, you promote destruction.)
https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/ct-met-pritzker-illinois-marijuana-legalize-legislature-20181108-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Kevin Sabet, head of Smart Approaches to Marijuana, which opposes legalization, said he thinks the study authors are biased. Sabet said they failed to account for the serious downsides of drug use, such as car accidents and substance abuse. He also said decriminalization of marijuana, which took effect in Illinois in 2016, addresses many of the social justice issues. Holdouts against legalization remain ready to fight it in the General Assembly. House Republican leader Jim Durkin said lawmakers should stop their rush toward legalization. “I will never support legalization,” he said. “I don’t like how quickly we are moving. Illinois should not be part of this lab experiment. I see no societal value.” Durkin supports medical marijuana for pain and end-of-life care and said that program appears successful in prohibiting access for underage use and the illegal drug market. He called for lawmakers to review the results when that pilot program expires in summer 2020, before moving beyond it, but said he does not know how much opposition remains in Springfield.)

Fixes to tax assessments bring dramatic changes for Chicago homeowners – Hal Dardick (DIERSEN: If homes cannot be sold for their assessed value, should taxing bodies be required to pay home sellers a) the difference between the selling price and the assessed value and b) refunds of real estate taxes paid based on recalculated home value back 5, 10, 15, 20+ years?)

Ever-increasingly, they want me to agree to not report anything about their fundraisers before they will let me attend their fundraisers. Since 2005, they have viciously used against me what happened with GOPUSA, Talon News, and White House Correspondent Jeff Gannon. SEE: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talon_News They paint me as being a clone of Jeff Gannon and even worse things. Ever since I became a GOPUSA reporter in 2000, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have hinted/implied/argued/shouted that I ask bad questions at press conferences and share privileged information with reporters that have caused Republican candidates to be defeated and even worse things. Of course, I should sue my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes.)

During the 1840s and 1850s, all my ancestors immigrated to northeast Illinois from what is now Germany. Of course, needless-to-say, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have always used that against me. In my defense, I stress that my grandfather on my father’s side fought the Germans during WWI, that my uncles on my mother’s side fought the Germans during WWII, and that my father would have fought the Germans during WWII if he had not been 4-F. Further, according to http://dna.ancestry.com, my ancestry is 33% Europe West, 28% Scandinavia, 24% Great Britain, 11% Ireland, 2% Europe East, 1% Finland/Northwest Russia, and 1% Italy/Greece. (FROM THE ARTICLE: HB40 reared its head in Tuesday’s election. Every incumbent who voted for the controversial measure was reelected, and sponsors of the HB4114 to repeal HB40 were defeated. They are state Reps. Peter Breen, Christine Winger and Sheri Jesiel. Breen’s defeat was particularly shocking. Along with being had been an outspoken opponent of HB40, which repealed the “trigger” language in Illinois stating that the day Roe v. Wade is ever modified or overturned, abortion would be illegal in Illinois with no exceptions. HB40 also removed the restriction on state funding for some abortions. After the bill passed and was signed by the governor, Breen filed suit to dismantle the legislation. Personal PAC, which supports abortion rights, spent more than $300,000 to unseat Breen, “and it was worth every penny,” Terry Cosgrove, president and CEO of Personal PAC told POLITICO, calling it one of the political action committee’s “biggest victories ever.”)

FORBES
— If You Don’t Want To Flip Burgers At 67, Do These 10 Things Right Now – Jack Kelly (DIERSEN: What are some of the things that you did to qualify yourself for better paying jobs and to keep those jobs? I earned a) a job-related bachelor’s degree when I was 21 in 1970 and job-related master’s degrees when I was 27, 31, and 48, b) job-related professional certifications when I was 30, 32, 41, 45, 47, and 48, and c) a job-related professional license when I was 32.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Here is what you should immediately start doing if you are in your late 30s and older: 1. Think critically if your type of work can be done later in life. Does your job have certain physical manual work requirements that have a built in expiration date as you age? Could technology easily disrupt your job? Can your position be relocated? Could a junior (cheaper) person take over your responsibilities with a little training period? Will your job be too taxing and stressful to continue in your 50s, 60s or 70s? 2. If your job doesn’t easily lend itself to working into your sixties, start figuring out a second career right away before it’s too late. 3. Start a side hustle. If it doesn’t work keep trying until something clicks. 4. Consider going back to school to earn a degree which may open some new doors, and offer a new lease on life. 5. Obtain training in a niche area that could lead to a second career. 6. Save and invest as much money as possible to allow you to retire on your own terms. This will be difficult because it requires giving up fancy vacations, flashy cars, and an extravagant lifestyle. 7. If you live in an expensive and high taxed neighborhood, sell your home, move to a lower cost state, and bank the savings. 8. Maybe pivot to a job with the government, education or other sectors that can’t discriminate like the private sector does. 9. Start a side business that is a passion but could also provide a steady stream of income. 10. Don’t bury your head in the sand and pretend that you’ll never grow old.)
— How Much Longer Will You Work? – Sara Zeff Geber
https://www.forbes.com/sites/sarazeffgeber/2018/11/08/how-much-longer-will-you-work/#ba8e51a32d2a
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Are you one of the many baby boomers who have done the math and determined that even with Social Security you have not saved enough money to retire? If so, welcome to a very large club. The Employee Benefits Research Institute (EBRI) and the Federal Reserve estimate the average accumulated wealth for workers in their 50s and 60s is less than $150,000. That amount will surely not support a 30+ year retirement, especially in the coastal areas of the U.S. Most financial advisors are recommending accumulating assets of at least $1million to ensure you will be able to finance your full retirement, including health care costs and care for yourself and your spouse or loved one. If you don’t have quite that much, does it mean you will have to work forever or live in your wealthy cousin’s basement? Probably not, but it depends. First of all, if you are in good health, why do you want to retire? If you aren’t sick of what you are doing, hang in there for a while and accumulate a bit more savings. If you are chomping at the bit to leave your current employer or stop doing whatever draws a 1099 at the end of the year, then it may be time to consider what else you might want to do that would still earn a paycheck and be more aligned with your current interests and values.)
