When it comes to the last three presidential elections, 2024 doesn’t look much different than 2016 or 2020 in our area. Let’s start with Champaign County, where Donald Trump’s losing percentage — a historically bad one for three consecutive elections — has barely budged. He got 36.52 percent in 2024, 36.92 percent in 2020 and 36.42 percent in 2016. No candidate has done that poorly in the county in a presidential election with just two major candidates since Democrat Adlai Stevenson in 1952 and 1956 (34 and 33 percent, respectively). Poor Jimmy Carter got just 32.2 percent in 1980, but that was also had Illinois congressman and University of Illinois graduate John Anderson running as an independent, and he got 15 percent of the vote here.)
