I was hired by Firestone’s district office and assigned to his store. He owned the building in Chicago Heights that the store was in. He forced me to pass a 2-week probationary period in the Firestone Store in Gary, Indiana. He disapproved of my being a draft avoider, Republican, college graduate, part-time MBA student at UIC, Protestant, German American, my ancestors having been in America since 1844, and I had been a Crete resident since 1948. He was a veteran and he blamed Republicans for America losing the Vietnam War. My on-the-job training included lots of pumping gasoline, mounting and balancing tires, changing oil and filters, changing batteries, and delivering major appliances. I made the best of it, but I did accept a job offer from Oldsmobile in early 1971. He immediately rudely fired me when I told him that I had accepted that offer after he had directed me while the store was open to use a ladder, bucket, water, and SOS pads to clean the whitewalls on moldy tires that had been hanging on store’s showroom walls for many years.
