CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— OUTSTANDING: Rally aims to persuade Naperville City Council to ban retail marijuana sales – SUZANNE BAKER (DIERSEN: Federal law and the Republican Party platform oppose recreational pot. Political parties exist to help elect candidates who can and will defend and advance their platform. Everyone in Illinois who states that they are religious, conservative, and/or Republican, and especially Republican Precinct Committeemen/Captains, Republican township/ward/county organization officials, Illinois Republican Party officials, and Republican elected and appointed officials, should speak out against the retail sale of pot at all upcoming meetings held by their municipality and county. Those who speak in favor of the retail sale of pot should immediately resign, and if not, be removed from office.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: A recently created group formed to persuade the Naperville City Council to ban the sale of recreational marijuana in the city will hold a rally Saturday to support those efforts. Naperville resident Jennifer Taylor said she organized the group, called Opt Out Naperville, and the rally to show council members how many people don’t want pot sold in the city. Taylor, who has spoken out against marijuana sales at the July 16 and Aug. 20 council meetings, said many people in the audience support her position. “Yet it feels like their voices are not being heard,” she said. “This is about keeping Naperville family-focused,” said Taylor, a mother of two. Saturday’s rally will start at 10 a.m. Saturday in Central Park, which is located one block east of Washington Street and just south of Benton Avenue.“ (The rally) is one of many avenues to show that the residents don’t this this here,” Taylor said. Opt Out Naperville also is hosting a gathering at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the free speech pavilion along the Riverwalk near Jackson Avenue and Webster Street, just before the Naperville City Council meeting at 7 p.m. Taylor said not everyone is able to attend the council meeting and the meetup is a way to show support. “This is one of the most important decisions that will be made on the dias. It will shape the future of Naperville,” she said. The city council will be at a crossroads the next time it discusses the retail sale of recreational marijuana, which becomes legal in Illinois Jan. 1. Last week the council directed staff develop a plan for what allowing recreational pot sales would look like. The previous month the council asked staff to prepare an ordinance for Naperville to opt out. Any decision likely may hinge on the vote of council member Patrick Kelly. Kelly voted last week with council members Judy Brodhead, John Krummen, Benny White and Mayor Steve Chirico in favor of asking city staff to prepare a plan for recreational marijuana sales. Last month he voted with council members Kevin Coyne, Patty Gustin, Paul Hinterlong and Theresa Sullivan on a plan to opt out. Coyne said he’s glad members of the community like Taylor are stepping up to take a leadership role on this issue. He said he’s heard from “a great many” from community opposed to pot sales in the city and expects many of those different stakeholders will attend the rally. During public comment at the meeting last week, support for and against recreational marijuana sales was generally split among the roughly 20 people who spoke on the issue. Those in favor of allowing recreational marijuana sales in Naperville, including Mayor Steve Chirico, have said banning retail pot sales in the city will simply drive residents to buy it elsewhere and let other communities realize the tax benefits. And those tax benefits could help offset any costs to Naperville related to marijuana use by its residents. Gustin, who plans to speak at the Saturday rally, said opting out is the best option because the city needs more time to study not only statistics from other municipalities that legalized pot but to analyze the effects of marijuana sales on the community. “Naperville is a family-friendly community. Naperville is a kid-friendly community. Naperville is an education-focused community,” Gustin said. “Opting-out is the smart thing to in an educated community.” [Most read] Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot 100 days in — reform at City Hall still a work in progress: ‘We haven’t declared victory, but I think we’ve taken some very positive steps.’ The state’s fourth largest city may seem like an unlikely spot for a contentious debate on allowing recreational marijuana sales. It was one of the first Illinois cities in the area to raise the age to purchase tobacco from 18 to 21 when it did so in 2016, more than two years before the age was raised statewide. The city was among the first to ban smoking in enclosed public places and the workplace. Naperville was also one of the first of Illinois’ largest cities to ban video gambling despite it being legal at the state level.)

August 27 Evening Edition

DAILY HERALD
— OUTSTANDING: Wheaton plans to ban recreational pot sales, citing ‘unknowns’ of legalization – Katlyn Smith (DIERSEN: DuPage County Coroner Richard Jorgensen, DuPage County Forest Preserve Commissioner Tim Whelan, Former Milton Township Trustee Don Sender, Wheaton Liquor & Tobacco Control Commission Chairman Mark Taylor, Gary Knosp, and me spoke against the sale of recreational pot in Wheaton at Wheaton’s public hearing on the issue Monday evening, August 26, 2019. Hearing attendees included Bob Cherry and Carl and Dagmar Lofgren.)
https://www.dailyherald.com/news/20190827/wheaton-plans-to-ban-recreational-pot-sales-citing-unknowns-of-legalization
(FROM THE ARTICLE: “I just don’t see an advantage to being a first mover on this,” Mayor Phil Suess said. “And a very practical consideration: We say yes to this, the next discussion is where does it go? And I’m pretty sure we’re going to have a pretty profound discussion if we went that way in the context of ‘not in my backyard.'” Some council members also prefer to take that wait-and-see approach, indicating they could revisit public health and safety questions once the market establishes itself in towns that are now planning to allow dispensaries. “If we opt out now, we have the ability at any point to opt back in after time has passed and seeing OK, what has Lombard done?” Councilman Christopher Zaruba said. . .”People will prefer to buy their marijuana illegally to avoid the high costs due to taxes and regulation,” Councilwoman Suzanne Fitch said.)
— DuPage County taking more time to consider marijuana sales – Robert Sanchez (DIERSEN: At this meeting, Former Milton Township Trustee Don Sender and I urged DuPage County to ban the sale of pot in its unincorporated areas.)
https://www.dailyherald.com/news/20190827/dupage-county-taking-more-time-to-consider-marijuana-sales
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Board member Tim Elliott urged the county to opt out. “To me, it’s not a question of money,” the Glen Ellyn Republican said. “It’s about what’s the right thing to do for our citizens.” Elliott said it’s possible that state lawmakers will make changes to the cannabis law during the fall veto session. For example, the number of licenses statewide could be increased, he said. “So I would prefer to see us opt out, at least in the short-term, to see what our municipalities do and, frankly, to see what Springfield does,” Elliott said. . .”I am stunned to see that we would even contemplate allowing zoning in an area that close to a high school, whether the regulations are there or not,” said board member Robert Larsen, a Wheaton Republican. “I think that’s a big mistake, and I hope we don’t go that route.”)

— Slavery and the Holocaust: How Americans and Germans Cope With Past Evils – Deborah E. Lipstadt (DIERSEN: Who hates German Americans the most in your neighborhood, in your precinct, in your municipality, in your township/ward, in your county, and in Illinois? Government is nasty. Politics is nasty. Democrats and Democrat plants, Libertarians and Libertarian plants, Greens and Green plants, and RINOs are nasty. I should write a book about a) how my Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates in the federal government used and b) how my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes in Wheaton, Glen Ellyn, Milton Township, DuPage County, and Illinois use my 100% German national origin against me. They constantly foisted/foist negative German stereotypes on me. I would focus on those who are German American, but who demonize, denigrate, and condemn me to curry favor with those who hate German Americans. They paint themselves as being “good” German Americans who go around destroying “bad” Germans like me. In my defense, I stress that they all my ancestors immigrated way back during the 1840s and 1850s, that my grandfather on my father’s side fought the Germans during WWI, that my uncles on my mother’s side fought the Germans during WWII, and that if he had not been 4-F, my father would have fought the Germans during WWII. If DNA information had been available back when I worked for the federal government, I would have stressed that. According to http://dna.ancestry.com, my ancestry is 33% Europe West, 28% Scandinavia, 24% Great Britain, 11% Ireland, 2% Europe East, 1% Finland/Northwest Russia, and 1% Italy/Greece.)
