DAILY HERALD
— Fake news and the public’s obligation to know – Editorial (DIERSEN: The Daily Herald should write an article, or maybe a book, about my critics/opponents. According to my critics/opponents, all news and commentary is fake except for the news and commentary that they put out or bless. My critics/opponents focus on a) stopping me from putting GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails together and sending them out and b) stopping everyone from reading those emails. My critics/opponents dominate the Milton Township Republican Central Committee (MTRCC), DuPage County Republican Central Committee, and the Illinois Republican Party. They crow that even though I have been a MTRCC member since 1999, MTRCC has never asked me to serve as chairman of a MTRCC committee, let alone as a MTRCC officer. They crow that they defeated me 69-13 when I ran for the open MTRCC Treasurer office in 2004. They crow that I am no longer a TAPROOT Republicans of Illinois chairman, Wheaton Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Committee member, MTRCC webmaster, Illinois Center Right Coalition (ICRC) Steering Committee member, American Association of Political Consultants Midwest Chapter board member, GAO employee, etc. They crow that they almost succeeded in getting ICRC to censure in 2006 me for my GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails.)

CHICAGO NOW
— Why aren’t progressives more outspoken against age discrimination? (DIERSEN: All my critics/opponents, all their operatives, and all their dupes promote age discrimination a) to get rid of those who are older than they are and/or b) to curry favor with those who promote age discrimination. “Up-or-out” is code for age discrimination. If you are a federal employee who is Republican, White, male, and/or non-veteran, the federal government gets rid of you if you do not make GS-13 (currently $96,403) by age 25, GS-14 (currently $113,920) by age 30, GS-15 (currently $134,000) by age 35, and Senior Executive Service (currently $164,200) by age 40.)
http://www.chicagonow.com/windy-city-legal-geek/2019/01/why-arent-progressives-more-outspoken-against-age-discrimination/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: I can be forgiven if I’m a little pissed off right now. The Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals decided a few days ago that it’s okay for employers to discriminate against me. As I explained in my June 9 blog post, a man named Dale Kleber sued CareFusion Corp. for discriminatory hiring practices in violation of the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA). A three-judge panel of the Seventh Circuit found that CareFusion violated the Act when it published a job description seeking an in-house attorney “with no more than 7 years’ relevant legal experience.” Kleber claimed that was really code for younger candidates, in light of the fact the company hired a 29-year-old instead of him.)

NEW YORK TIMES
— Trump Meets With Hard-Right Group Led by Ginni Thomas – Maggie Haberman and Annie Karni (DIERSEN: How “hard right” are you? I oppose government doing anything that promotes a) welfare, b) dependency on government, c) dependency on charity, d) LGBTQ activity, e) abortion, f) mass/illegal immigration, g) diminishment of First and Second Amendment rights, h) booze, gambling, pot, and other vices, i) patronage, j) political affiliation discrimination, k) reverse discrimination, and l) age discrimination.)
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/26/us/politics/trump-ginni-thomas-meeting.html

(FROM THE ARTICLE: President Trump met last week with a delegation of hard-right activists led by Ginni Thomas, the wife of Justice Clarence Thomas, listening quietly as members of the group denounced transgender people and women serving in the military, according to three people with direct knowledge of the events. For 60 minutes Mr. Trump sat, saying little but appearing taken aback, the three people said, as the group also accused White House aides of blocking Trump supporters from getting jobs in the administration. It is unusual for the spouse of a sitting Supreme Court justice to have such a meeting with a president, and some close to Mr. Trump said it was inappropriate for Ms. Thomas to have asked to meet with the head of a different branch of government. A vocal conservative, Ms. Thomas has long been close to what had been the Republican Party’s fringes, and extremely outspoken against Democrats. Her activism has raised concerns of conflicts of interest for her husband, who is perhaps the most conservative member of the Supreme Court.)
— Hospitals Are Asking Their Own Patients to Donate Money – Phil Galewitz (DIERSEN: Do political parties do “wealth screenings?”)
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/24/business/hospitals-asking-patients-donate-money.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Many hospitals conduct nightly wealth screenings — using software that culls public data such as property records, contributions to political campaigns and other charities — to gauge which patients are most likely to be the source of large donations. Those who seem promising targets for fund-raising may receive a visit from a hospital executive in their rooms, as well as extra amenities like a bathrobe or a nicer waiting area for their families. Some hospitals train doctors and nurses to identify patients who have expressed gratitude for their care, and then put the patients in touch with staff fund-raisers. These various tactics, part of a strategy known as “grateful patient programs,” make some people uncomfortable. “Wealth screenings strike me as unseemly but not illegal or unethical,” said Arthur Caplan, a bioethicist at the New York University School of Medicine.)
— How Every Member Got to Congress – Sahil Chinoy and Jessia Ma (DIERSEN: It looks like none of them were federal employees. I was a federal employee for almost 30 years. GAO works for Congress. I worked for GAO for almost 18 years, the last 11 years of which, at the GS-13 Step 1-10 levels, currently $96,403-$125,325/year. Before that, I worked for IRS for almost 9 years, the last 5 1/2 years of which, at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels, currently $81,071-$91,880/year. Further, it looks like none of them are CPAs, Certified Internal Auditors (CIA), licensed CPAs, Certified Fraud Examiners (CFE), Certified Government Financial Managers (CGFM), Certified Financial Service Auditors CFSA), or Forensic Accountants (FA). I became a CPA in 1979, a CIA in 1981, a licensed CPA in 1981, a CFE in 1990, a CGFM in 1994, a CFSA in 1996, and a FA in 1997.)

— The Loneliness of the Moderate Democrat ‘It takes a lot of spine to be a centrist in America today.’ – Frank Bruni (DIERSEN: Ever-increasingly, Democrats paint themselves as being anti-Trump, anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-patriotic, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, anti-German Americans, anti-draft avoiders, and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America for a long time.)

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/26/us/government-shutdown-over.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: CHICAGO — On Day 1 of what would become the longest government shutdown in the country’s history, Mary Kelly had a typically American view of the situation: She was optimistic. As an employee of the Internal Revenue Service, she had been through shutdowns before. This one would not last long, she figured. On Day 24, weeks into her mandatory furlough, she applied for unemployment benefits. Ten days after that, she left her home in the Chicago suburbs, rode a train downtown and joined demonstrators on a windswept Federal Plaza, her cheeks mottled pink from the cold. “I was never scared during shutdowns in the past,” Ms. Kelly, a union officer, said during the protest on Thursday, wearing woolen gloves and clutching a sign. “But now who knows what’s going to happen?” And then on Day 35, with no resolution seemingly in sight, she had her answer in news leaked from Washington: The shutdown was finally coming to an end.)

MIAMI HERALD
— Could you live on your retirement savings for 23 years? – DAYANA YOCHIM (DIERSEN: The lower a retiree’s standard of living, the longer before that retiree’s savings runs out. Last year, my 88-year-old aunt’s expenses were $93,501 including $87,116 for assisted living, $2,532 for income taxes, $1,715 for medications, and $1,572 for Medicare. Her income was $33,691 and she withdrew $72,831 from her retirement savings. That resulted in her retirement savings decreasing by $56,136 or from $497,958 down to $441,823. Simplistically, $56,136 divided by $441,823 is 8, her retirement savings will be exhausted in less than 8 years.)
https://www.miamiherald.com/news/article225007550.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The average budget for a retiree, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data, provides even more color on what to expect when you’re expecting to retire. Older households, defined as ones headed by someone 65 or older, spend $46,000 annually, versus the $57,000 average spent by all U.S. households combined. The top three monthly expenses for those 65 and older are housing ($1,322), health care ($500) and food ($484). On average, about half of a retired household’s income comes from Social Security and private and government pensions, according to the BLS, with personal savings and investment and rental income providing 6.9 percent.)
