CRAIN’S CHICAGO BUSINESS
— Democrats say “Illinois Republicans start choosing which candidate to back in the 2024 race.”
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Just a few hours after Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis got off to a dead-air-filled start to his race for president, Donald Trump picked up an endorsement from Darren Bailey, who may have been blown out in his race for governor last year but now appears to be preparing to run for Congress in Southern Illinois and wants the former president on his side. That, in a nutshell, is the state of the GOP race for president, both here in Illinois and nationally. Democratic incumbent Joe Biden is vulnerable, and the pros in both parties know it. His age and appearance raise legitimate questions about his performance. But though it’s still kind of early with time for change, the race for the GOP nomination to oppose Biden seems to be boiling down to a contest between the hero of Jan. 6 and the guy trying to gag Mickey Mouse. The rest of the field is so far back as to be almost invisible. “People who like DeSantis are still with him but getting nervous,” says one top Illinois Republican, who asked not to be named. “The Trump hard core is still with him. A lot of people are looking for a place to land.” “Right now, I’m going to wait and see what happens,” says former Bolingbrook Mayor Roger Claar, a member of the GOP’s central committee who was a big Trump backer in 2020. “Trump seems to be holding his own. But I’m looking at whether he can win” against Biden. As the Bailey reference suggests — “I am proud to endorse President Trump . . . again!” Bailey says on his Facebook page — the former incumbent’s stronghold is downstate, south of Springfield. Party sources believe not only Bailey but U.S. Reps. Mary Miller and Mike Bost will be on Trump’s side, with Bost trying to fend off an expected primary challenge from Bailey. Just to the north, Rep. Darin LaHood recently invited DeSantis to be the star speaker at his recent Tazewell & Peoria County Republicans Lincoln Day Dinner. Though sources close to LaHood say that shouldn’t be taken as an endorsement, I guarantee you it was noticed at Mar-a-Lago. Clearly in DeSantis’ camp is former gubernatorial hopeful and conservative activist Jeanne Ives, who has ties to major party benefactor Dick Uihlein. “I’m a DeSantis fan,” Ives said in a phone interview. “I like a strong governor with a proven record of accomplishments. . . .Florida has, what, a $21 billion budget surplus.” And Trump? “If he’s the nominee, I’ll be 100% behind him,” she replied. “But I’m not going to let anyone off the hook on COVID,” where Trump, at least early in the pandemic, backed a shutdown of much of the nation’s normal business. DeSantis also has received financial help from Joe Ricketts, patron of the Chicago Cubs-owning family. On the other hand, sources in a position to know say that while Citadel chief Ken Griffin has been a major DeSantis financial backer since moving to Florida last year, he’s not been impressed with DeSantis’ cultural war on Disney and others who have spoken up for LGBTQ rights. Illinois Republican Chairman Don Tracy is staying neutral in the race, at least so far. That’s probably a smart move on his part, because unifying the Illinois GOP under any chairman has become an increasingly difficult task. Also staying out of the fray are the GOP leaders of the Illinois Senate and House, John Curran and Tony McCombie, even though signing up with the right candidate can position the signer for statewide office, in the same way that former House GOP Leader Jim Durkin’s alliance with John McCain vastly raised his Illinois profile. Of the remaining field — including ex-Gov. Asa Hutchinson of Arkansas, Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina and former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley — Haley is the only one I could find who’s moved the needle here. Top fund-raiser Bill Strong reportedly is helping her, as is Betsy Ankney, who managed Bruce Rauner’s tough 2018 re-election race. Bottom line at this writing: It looks like a two-person race. But there’s plenty of time for things to change.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The 2023 version replaced Old Glory with a pro-cross dressing mascot called the “Gender Unicorn,” and the American flags with “rainbow bracelets,” meant to honor homosexuality. Political activists used River Forest’s Monday parade not to remember those killed in action, defending the country, but rather to promote abortion, gun control and so-called “trans” ideology, which argues biological sex no longer exists.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Hundreds of noncitizens have been kicked off Chicago’s voter rolls after admitting they were never supposed to have been registered in the first place, according to a new study that blames the Motor Voter law for how the names got added in the first place. Since 2007, the city has removed 394 people from its voting lists after deciding they were actually foreign nationals who, under the law, are ineligible to vote. City records show that 20 of the noncitizens did actually vote, casting a total of 85 ballots, according to data compiled by the Public Interest Legal Foundation.)

— CPA timeline: schedule and preparation – Stephanie Qadir (COMMENT: In retrospect, with benefit of hindsight, my undergraduate major should have been accounting. As IRS assigned me more and more and more complex collection cases, I learned how important accounting was. I started taking graduate accounting courses at DePaul, I took the Becker CPA Review course, and I passed the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979 when I was 30 years old. But that was far too late for me because of my bad demographics: conservative, Republican, White, male. non-veteran, Protestant, German American, and my ancestors had been in America since 1844.)

Along with finding that first job, there’s one major moment looming for new accounting graduates: passing the CPA Exam. Passing the CPA Exam takes hard work and determination, so planning how to start tackling the exam can be just as important as actually studying for it.)
