WQAD
— State program helping Illinois students save thousands on grad school. Age discrimination is real, and especially for those who are White, male, and/or non-veteran. It is called up-or-out. I did not earn an MBA until I was 27. By then, it was too late. Why didn’t I earn an MBA sooner? My father died suddenly when I was a senior at NIU in 1969. My mother had never worked outside of the home. My brother was having troubles. I applied for a financial hardship draft deferment to help support them. I needed a job. Potential employers saw me as being draft bait. I accepted the only job offer that I got. It was a job that did not really require a college degree. I started taking graduate evening business courses, but only one at a time. Because of that, I did not earn an MBA from Loyola until I was 27. By then, it was too late. I did not earn a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul until I was 31. By then, again, it was too late. It took me 4 years because again, I took only one graduate evening accounting course at a time. I did not pass the Certified Internal Auditor examination and become a licensed CPA until I was 32. By then, again, it was too late. I did not earn a master’s degree in finance from IIT until I was 48. By then, again, it was too late. It took me 5 years because again, I took only one graduate evening finance course at a time. Why did I take only one graduate evening course at a time? Because that was all that I could afford in terms of time, attention, and money. Age discrimination is real, and especially for those who are White, male, and/or non-veteran. It is called up-or-out. I should write about that.
