But then, I decided that I could get a college degree sooner if I got accepted by UIC and commuted to/from classes there from my parents’ home in Crete. To do that, I bought a 1958 Chevrolet Bel Air in 1964 with money I had earned doing yard work and delivering newspapers. I used that car to get to/from my parents’ home and a dish washing job in Chicago Heights. I used the money I had earned doing that to buy a new 1966 Pontiac Tempest Sprint in May of 1966 that I used to get to/from summer jobs in 1966 and then classes at UIC. Then, the Park Forest Post Office hired me. With the money I earned working part-time during the school years and full-time during the summers, I paid for my college expenses, I bought a new 1968 Oldsmobile 442 in 1967, I bought a new 1969 Dodge Charger SE in 1968, and I graduated debt-free from NIU in 1970 owning that Charger.

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Serving in the U.S. Military is an option for every American through enlistment and in my opinion is a solid career path. Military service is also possible through the commission process if you have a college degree. This will set you up as an officer with higher pay rates and better leadership opportunities. Commission can be reached through a service academy, ROTC (Reserve Officers’ Training Corps), or an officer training/candidate school (OCS, OTS) with a college degree. People who are uncertain about life after college when enrolling in college or nearing graduation should consider serving in the military. There are many benefits to service, some of which I will not discuss, that can lead to a successful career and even more success in the civilian world. My question is, for people with a college degree is military service a good career path? For those looking for free or reduced education, the military can provide you with that through a service academy or through ROTC programs. If you want to go to graduate school and seek out a master’s degree or a doctorate the military can also help cover that. You can also earn the post-9/11 GI Bill, if you commission through OTS or OCS, by serving on active duty which can be used for yourself or passed onto your children.)
