— Trump revels in victories, mocks party members who lost, revokes CNN reporter’s press credentials – AP
https://abc7chicago.com/politics/trump-revels-in-victories-revokes-cnn-reporters-press-credentials/4640053/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Trump sparred with CNN Chief White House Correspondent Jim Acosta, who asked him questions about the migrant caravan headed for the U.S. and the Russia investigation. “That’s enough, put down the mic,” Trump said to Acosta, as he tried to ask more questions. Acosta struggled with a woman in a maroon dress tried to take the microphone from him. She eventually succeeded and handed it to another reporter. “CNN should be ashamed of itself, having you working for them. You are a rude, terrible person. You shouldn’t be working for CNN.” Acosta tweeted just before 8 p.m. Eastern Time that Secret Service denied him entry to the White House grounds for his live shot. Press Secretary Sarah Sanders released a statement accusing Acosta of physically assaulting a White House intern and saying his press credentials had been revoked until further notice. “President Trump believes in a free press and expects and welcomes tough questions of him and his Administration. We will, however, never tolerate a reporter placing his hands on a young woman just trying to do her job as a White House intern. This conduct is absolutely unacceptable,” Sanders wrote in the statement. The statement claimed, without evidence, that Trump has “given the press more access than any President in history,” and concluded, “As a result of today’s incident, the White House is suspending the hard pass of the reporter involved until further notice.”)

https://www.dailyherald.com/news/20181107/dont-write-illinois-gops-eulogy-just-yet-election-expert-says
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Conservative Republican state Rep. Jeanne Ives of Wheaton, who narrowly lost to Gov. Bruce Rauner in the GOP gubernatorial primary, said state party leadership failed this election cycle. “The Illinois Republican Party needs new leadership at this point,” she said, suggesting Republicans from downstate or central Illinois could be up for the task. With Gov. Bruce Rauner out of the picture, so, too, is the money he sunk into GOP campaigns — and that’ll cause problems for Republican candidates, Redfield said. The GOP also will struggle until it finds its identity, Redfield said. The conservative wing led by Ives and activist Dan Proft has been targeting socially moderate Republicans to the detriment of the party, he said. “I suspect there’s going to be a real battle for control (of the state party),” Redfield said. “If they’re not sure who they are and they don’t replace Rauner’s money, they’re going to be in a world of hurt in two years, especially with (President) Trump at the head of the ticket.” Based on voter demographics, Republican political consultant Brad Goodman said, the party will become less and less relevant unless it can put up candidates young suburban women will support.)

BLOOMBERG
— SALT Cap Comes Back to Haunt GOP With Key Tax Writers Losing Their Seats – Laura Davison
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-11-07/salt-cap-comes-back-to-haunt-as-key-gop-tax-writers-lose-bids
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Two of the key players behind the tax overhaul — Illinois’ Peter Roskam and Minnesota’s Erik Paulsen — were among the six casualties. They sit on the tax-writing Ways and Means Committee, whose Republican bench has been wiped out by losses, as well as retirements. Ten of the 24 Republicans on the Ways and Means Committee won’t return to Congress next year — in addition to Roskam and Paulsen, two members from low-tax states lost their re-election bids and six more decided to retire or run for other office. The loss of many of the committee’s top lawmakers means the GOP will need to rebuild members’ expertise in tax, trade and health-care issues. . .Roskam and Paulsen helped craft the 2017 bill and continued to support it even after a controversial provision was included to limit deductions to $10,000. Previously, they were unlimited. The lawmakers had hoped campaigning on the tax law’s other benefits, such as lower rates for individuals and more generous child tax credits, could offset voter frustration over the new cap. . .Roskam, who served as the House Ways and Means tax policy subcommittee chairman during the tax overhaul process, hails from a suburban Chicago district where the counties are some of the highest taxed in the state. About 49.3 percent of the tax returns filed in the district prior to the law change claimed the SALT deduction, according to data from the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center. Roskam’s Democratic opponent, Sean Casten repeatedly campaigned on eliminating the SALT cap. “The fact that nearly half of his own constituents claim this deduction didn’t prevent Peter Roskam from making SALT a target,” Casten said in a white paper he published about tax policy. Over the course of the campaign, Roskam softened his support for the SALT cap, saying it should be indexed to inflation.)
