— The rise and the reckoning: Inside Brett Kavanaugh’s elite circles of influence – Marc Fisher, Ann E. Marimow, Michael Kranish (DIERSEN: Who demonizes, denigrates, and condemns you as being someone who was born with a silver spoon in his mouth? I should write a book about those who have demonized, denigrated, and condemned me as being someone who was born with a silver spoon in his mouth.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/politics/ct-brett-kavanaugh-profile-georgetown-yale-20181004-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: He would be, in the words of his prep school’s motto, a man for others. At an age when most young people struggle to figure out their path forward, he knew he would devote his life to public service. Brett Kavanaugh was destined for something big. The people around him knew it, too. Through the years, Kavanaugh, 53, a federal appellate judge since 2006, has been rich in friends, loyal and true. Teachers, parents, classmates, colleagues – they made it their business to buff and defend Kavanaugh’s reputation. They cheered him on as he climbed the ladder of legal success. And they rallied around him when he tripped on the way up. That turned out to be a job that extended over four decades because as bright and kind and wise as friends say Kavanaugh is, he has also left behind a trail of people who say that his reckless behavior raises serious questions about his judgment and veracity. The story of President Donald Trump’s embattled choice for the Supreme Court, who could learn the fate of his troubled nomination Thursday, is a classic Washington tale of a young man who grew up surrounded by people in high places, keenly aware of protecting his image.)
— As Kavanaugh hearing puts spotlight on teens and alcohol, experts warn: ‘Adolescent drinking is a problem’ – Kate Thayer (DIERSEN: What has steered you away from booze? For me it includes my outstanding parents, Trinity Lutheran Church and Grade School in Crete, Hope Lutheran Church and Grade School in Park Forest, and being a federal employee. Overwhelmingly, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes a) drank lots of booze, b) drink lots of booze, c) want to drink lots of booze, d) want to make lots of money selling booze, and/or e) want governments to take in lots of tax revenue from the sale of booze. A major reason why my wife and I bought a home in Wheaton in 1978 and we had one built in Wheaton in 1984 was that Wheaton was dry back then.)

— Trump and the myth of the self-made man – Helaine Olen (DIERSEN: To what extent did your father promote your career? My outstanding father died suddenly in 1969 when he was 47 and I was 21. He had fought type 1 diabetes from age 14, was the first of his ancestors to earn a high school diploma, never attended college, worked in the office of a nasty chemical plant in Chicago Heights, almost always worked second jobs to pay the family’s bills, and did not buy a new car until he was 45 years old, and it was a bottom of the line 2-door Chevy.)

They have always hinted/implied/argued/shouted that the undergraduate and graduate courses that I took a) were not job-related, b) did not help me carry out my job duties, c) were taken by me to get a job in the private sector, and d) were a distraction.
