DAILY HERALD
— DuPage County may seek referendum to dissolve election commission – Robert Sanchez
http://www.dailyherald.com/news/20170605/dupage-county-may-seek-referendum-to-dissolve-election-commission
(FROM THE ARTICLE: County officials have been told the election commission could be dissolved with a binding referendum. But the county can’t form a bipartisan election commission board without a state law change. One of the obstacles facing the proposed state law is that Democratic leaders in DuPage have criticized it. For example, they didn’t like the proposed process to appoint election commissioners. They’ve also voiced concern about the suggested salaries of the commissioners. Cronin, meanwhile, said he wants a consolidation of the election commission and the clerk’s office because it’s expected to save taxpayers at least $300,000 a year. The savings would be achieved by combining staff and finding efficiencies. “My priority is — and always has been — savings for the taxpayers,” Cronin said. “If we can do the same quality service more efficiently and save taxpayers money, that’s the direction we should take.” Before taking any steps to dissolve the election commission, Cronin said he first would have a “robust discussion” with county board members.)
— What are the advantages of hiring a multigenerational workforce? (DIERSEN: Non-veteran White males who are seeking a job with the federal government should be advised that with only rare exceptions, your career will be wasted and you will be gotten rid of if you do not make GS-13 ($94,610) by age 25, GS-14 ($111,801) by age 30, GS-15 ($131,508) by age 35, and Senior Executive Service ($161,900) by age 40. More is expected of non-veteran White males a) because they were born with silver spoons in their mouths, b) because they have always been privileged, and c) because they benefited from their parents’, their grandparents’, their great grandparents’, and the rest of their ancestors’ racism and sexism. Non-veteran Whites males are expected to pay the price of Affirmative Action, Diversity, and Inclusion.)

INSTITUTE OF INTERNAL AUDITORS
— Under Siege Public sector auditors can face intimidation, isolation, retaliation, suspension — even termination — just for doing their job. – Russell A. Jackson  (DIERSEN: I have always been a Republican. I worked for GAO for almost 18 years 1980-1997.  Overwhelmingly, all during that time, my superiors, my supervisors, my coworkers, and my subordinates were Democrats.)
https://iaonline.theiia.org/2017/Pages/Under-Siege.aspx
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The sad reality is that public sector auditors can face retaliation – isolation, smear campaigns, diminution of duties, even suspension and termination – just for doing their jobs. If the fruits of the audit function’s labors conflict with an agency head’s political agenda, too often the political agenda wins and the auditor loses. The threat is so real, and the stakes so high, that many practitioners embroiled in sticky political situations have to inform their colleagues anonymously – or with the approval of a lawyer. That’s why Patton’s tale is attributed directly to him; all his comments have been approved by counsel so they don’t impact the ongoing litigation. Solutions are few, but they do exist. If other practitioners know what to watch for and how to prepare for the worst, some may avoid the untenable situations their colleagues deal with. As an internal auditor under fire at a mid-level school district says, “Exposure of these issues may help someone else.” Ultimately, of course, some public sector auditors caught up in politics will simply have to fall on their swords. At the end of the day, the public servant trying to suppress the truth likely won an election or received an appointment from someone in office, so the auditor trying to tell the truth may be pressured to get on board or get out. But in many cases, targeted relationship-building and a firm grasp of the agency’s governance structure will go a long way toward avoiding catastrophe. The political motivation to punish an auditor often involves information that’s incriminating to the person who ordered the audit in the first place – sometimes under a law or regulation. In one case, an audit investigation found evidence that a school board CEO had been less than honest about his credentials; in another, a culture audit – which, in law enforcement is often going to be politically sensitive – contained pretty damning results; and another uncovered fraud in a university’s program accepting bodies of people willed to science. Often, it’s a more mundane reason, like auditors looking into contracts or programs that executive directors don’t want exposed or, as in Patton’s case, assisting outside agencies in their investigations. Sometimes it’s as simple as an executive director who insists that the audit function in general has a “gotcha” mentality. In fact, one anonymous practitioner facing retaliation at a local school district says she has come to believe that “any audit that falls under the chief operating officer or chief financial officer’s (CFO’s) jurisdiction or any audit that makes a board look like it isn’t providing governance and oversight will be political.” The means of punishing auditors vary as well, within fairly defined limits.)

FED SMITH
— How Do Federal Employees Rate President Trump? – Ralph R. Smith  (DIERSEN: If I was still working for GAO, my Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates would have killed me figuratively, if not literally by now.  Members of the following groups have always blamed me for all problems : anti-Trump, anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, anti-German Americans, anti-draft avoiders (except Bill Clinton), and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America longer than their ancestors.)
https://www.fedsmith.com/2017/06/05/federal-employees-rate-president-trump/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: According to this survey, 67.8% of those responding are current federal employees and 28.5% are retired federal employees. There were small percentages of those who were military or retired military, contractors, union staffers or no federal affiliation. A total of about 62% selected unsatisfactory of “Below Expectations.” 13.58% selected “Outstanding.” 38.3% selected categories from “Outstanding” to “Meets Expectations.” . . . Among Republicans, 73.4% rate President Trump at “Meets Expectations” or higher. 85.5% of Democrats gave the president an “unsatisfactory” rating. . .About 37% of respondents indicated they agreed with the priorities of the Trump administration. That is close to the same percentage that have a favorable opinion of the President’s performance so far. 58.5% indicated they disagreed with the priorities of the administration. . .Among Democrats, 85.5% of those taking the survey disagree with the priorities of the administration. Among Republicans, 73.8% agree with the administration’s priorities. And, among Independents, 34.3% agree and 61.4% disagree. . .44.5% of those responding to the survey identified themselves as Independent voters. Republicans were 24.2% of respondents and Democrats 23.5%. The remaining selected the “other” option. . .46.6% of those responding to this survey indicated they voted for Hillary Clinton in the presidential election. 38% indicated they voted for Donald Trump—roughly as the overall percentage of people who indicated they voted for him in the presidential election and the percentage that provides “meets expectations” or higher in this survey. Among Republicans, 78.4% voted for Donald Trump in the election. 10.8% voted for Hillary Clinton and 10.7 voted for another candidate. 89% of those who identified as Democrats voted for Hillary Clinton; 5.7% voted for Donald Trump; and 5.2% voted for another candidate. . .25% of those responding indicated they were more optimistic and more favorable about their federal career. 57% were less optimistic and 17.9% are still undecided.)

(FROM THE ARETICLE: The federal workforce. Blech. Blech, now more than ever, or so it seems, in the minds of the new administration. “A waste of your money,” Trump’s budget director, Mick Mulvaney, said in March about federal climate-change research. “Can we really continue to ask a coal miner in West Virginia or a single mom in Detroit to pay for these programs?” he had said about public broadcasting. “Taxpayers are stuck paying for overly generous compensation,” Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.), chair of the House subcommittee on government operations, said about federal employees as a whole — the big morass of some 2.8 million civil servants nationwide. Donald Trump, master of punchy catchphrases, had spent his campaign and the early days of his presidency promising to do the same thing: “Drain that swamp.” The swamp was the federal government of Washington. The epicenter of the swamp was metaphorically at 80 F St. NW, in the office of a stocky 66-year-old man named J. David Cox. Cox is the president of the American Federation of Government Employees, the largest federal workers union in America. More than 300,000 dues-paying members, and around 400,000 more also protected by default. “Every Zip code in America,” as Cox likes to say. “Coast to coast, Guam to Europe.”)

FEDERAL NEWS RADIO

Needless-to-say, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes would be overjoyed if Trump would cut if not end my Civil Service Retirement System pension, my Social Security, and/or my COLAs.)
https://federalnewsradio.com/mike-causey-federal-report/2017/06/poking-the-retiree-beehive/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Currently there are 2,625, 261 federal retirees or their survivors.  Right now, as you read this, another 300,000 active duty federal workers are eligible to retire and will, sooner or later, do so.  That’s a lot of people. Go into any McDonald’s, from Scottsville, Ky., to Pismo Beach, Calif., at any time of the day and you will likely see a former fed, or six, chowing down and talking.  The same for your local grocery store whether it is in Washington, D.C., to Washington Court House, Pa.  Or on Guam or American Samoa.  Former feds, and their wallets, purses or credit cards, are just about everywhere. Years ago a very sophisticated federal retiree — my mother — who lived near Fort Myers, Fla., explained that lots of people continue to eat out after retirement “we just do it earlier.”  So we may not see them, but they are definitely there.  According to data from the Office of Personnel Management just over 17 percent of all federal retirees have monthly annuities of $4,000 or more.  Another 22 percent get between $3,000 and $2,999 while 14 percent get $1,000 to $1,999.  Fewer than 9 percent get $1,000 or less per month from their civil service retirement benefit.   Most of the current retirees are under the older CSRS system which fully indexes their annuities to inflation regardless of age.   Workers retiring under the FERS system get cost of living adjustments (starting at age 62) that are partially indexed to inflation.  At least since the Reagan administration. But life-after-retirement (for current feds too) could change drastically if Congress goes along with the Trump administration plan to charge current workers 6 percent more for their retirement benefits, to reduce COLAs for CSRS retirees by giving them 0.5 percent less than the actual increase in inflation each year, by eliminating COLAs completely for FERS retirees (9 out of every 10 current workers is under FERS and would become part of the Zero Diet COLA group), and to eliminate an annual “gap” payment that now goes to FERS retirees until they reach age 62 and become eligible for Social Security. Although they too retire under an enhanced version of the civil service retirement program, many politicians at the House, Senate and now White House level view federal workers either as clowns, drones or creatures from the swamp.  They lap up studies — usually from conservative think tanks —showing federal workers are overpaid and ignore those that show feds, particularly at higher grade and skill levels, are dramatically underpaid compared to their private sector counterparts in Washington, Houston, San Francisco and New York City. Reducing the buying power of federal workers (by making them pay more for their pensions) and retirees, by reducing or eliminating COLAs in the future, could hurt many communities that depend on the federal pay or pension dollar to stay afloat.  So how big a deal is the federal-postal retiree dollar.  Check out this chart from the OPM.  It shows the number of retirees (and their survivor annuitants in each state, and the value of their annuity payments.  The chart does not include the value of Thrift Savings Plan accounts the retirees have or any Social Security payments they received for covered work before or after they were in government:)

CHICAGO NOW
— Special Memorial Day thanks to military draftees killed in action – Dennis Byrne  (DIERSEN: I should write a book about those who used/use my getting student draft deferments 1966-1970 and my getting a financial draft hardship 1970-1971 against me.  Most of them were my Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates in the federal government.)
http://www.chicagonow.com/dennis-byrnes-barbershop/2017/05/special-memorial-day-thanks-to-military-draftees-killed-in-action/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: On this Memorial Day, here is a special recognition of men who were conscripted into the military and who were killed in action. Volunteering for hazardous military duty and paying for it with your life deserves the highest praise. But what about those men who were drafted, who had no choice and who were killed? Today, memories of the draft have faded and the reality of Selective Service are absent in the lives of so many Americans. It is hard for today’s generations, mainly post-Baby Boomer, to know what it is like for government to order you into combat. For notification to report to a certain military installation on a certain date to be inducted into the Army. To be hauled off to basic training, to be told how to meet your responsibility to kill people. To be transported to front lines where people are dying. To either fire your weapon and fight, or be court marshaled. Failure to report for your military draft would result in imprisonment or fines and immediate induction. Today, the governing principle is that “It’s my body and no one can tell me what to do with it.” That’s mostly the mantra of the abortion industry and women’s rights advocates. But the philosophy certain has successfully seeped into today’s package of taken-for-granted men’s rights. A draft is simply inconceivable in today’s culture of extreme individualism. Today’s generations have no concept of what life was like when you had to plan for at least two years of military service. No “gap” year allowed. Avoiding the draft has a major concern, as important if not more so, than picking a college or a career. College deferments, which ultimately would run out. Getting married, but that deferment disappeared as the Vietnam War grew hotter. Teaching or certain other occupations. Using a connection to find  a slot in a high-demand reserve unit. In the Vietnam War, draftees accounted for 30.4 percent, or 17,725 combat deaths. Some 1.9 million men were drafted from 1964 to 1973.  In World War II, 61.2 percent of military men, or 11,5 million men, were draftees. While a large number of men were volunteers, in a manner of speaking, they also in reality were inductees. The draft, as designed, encouraged young men to “volunteer” for other branches of the service than the Army. “Volunteer” service in the Navy or Air Force was at least a year longer, but the chances of getting maimed or killed in combat were less. The draft always has been controversial, less so in time of national emergency such as World War II. But barring the most extraordinary crisis, today’s culture has killed all possibility of it returning (even though men today are still required to register for selective service). By the way, the stereotype of the Vietnam veteran is way off base. The image of the poorly educated, reluctant, drugged out and minority Vietnam soldier needs to be changed according to  Fact vs. Fiction. Check it out.)

CHICAGO ARGUS
— Memorial Day; ‘yea’ or ‘nae’ for those who do their military service? – Gregory Tejeda  (DIERSEN: I should write a book about those who used/use my getting student draft deferments 1966-1970 and my getting a financial draft hardship 1970-1971 against me.  Most of them were my Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates in the federal government.)
http://chicagoargus.blogspot.com/2017/05/memorial-day-yea-or-nae-for-those-who.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: I never served in any branch of the military; that fact doesn’t make me the least bit unique. There are many who for whatever reason manage to avoid a stint in the Army or any other military organization, and certainly don’t think our lives are any less complete as a result. OF COURSE, THERE also are those in our society who made a point of enlisting the first chance they got, and wind up thinking of their time in uniform and being among those who “serve their country” as the high point of their lives! Some even come away with thinking their military record entitles them to prime treatment for the remainder of their lives. We have a serious schism in our society; often viewing various issues quite differently. And not just a matter of whether we think Donald Trump is a “great American” or a “pompous fool” totally unfit to be carrying the title of Commander-in-Chief of our nation’s military! That split includes how essential we think it is that one have a military service record as part of their permanent record, or how much “lip service” they pay to the concept — I attended a Catholic mass that included a musical tribute to the armed services in its choir’s Sunday program; and while many were eager to support the idea, only a tiny minority of the congregation admitted to actually having served. Which gets down to the essence of the direction we think our society ought to be headed. THERE ARE THOSE people who will say that one reason, if not the primary reason, that Bill Clinton and Barack Obama were unfit to be president is because they never served in the military (and in the case of Clinton used many of the legal maneuvers people of that era engaged in to avoid a call-up to active duty). Some of an older generation remember back to the military draft, and think that forcing people of various economic and social classes to interact helped ease the societal split that now exists. Although others, including those who managed to avoid military service, would argue that the very concept of having done a stretch in the military puts a person into a mindset that makes them too narrow and unfit to address the serious problems confronting our nation, and our world. Perhaps we all ought to be engaged in something more than blind faith in forcing esoteric concepts of what one wants to define as patriotism by a trip out to the cemetery to pay tribute to someone who was unfortunate to have lost their life during their military service. SOME OF US like to talk about the “ultimate sacrifice” those young men made, I’m sure many of them could have contributed something equally worthwhile to society had they had a chance at a long- and full-life. While many of those who these days do enlist in the military often do so because their options in life are limited; and that military stretch may be their best option for preparing for an adult life. I remember in my own case, my mother would have been appalled if I had seriously talked about enlisting. I remember when Army recruiters sniffed around me when I was 16 and in high school, she gave them the cold shoulder. In my case, that probably was a wise direction. I did make the most of a college education, and it stirred me in the right direction toward what I wanted to do (yes, I actually figured out as far back as age 13 that I wanted to be a reporter-type person). I resisted the Army’s marketing pleas to “be all you can be.” WHILE I HAD cousins who did stints of military service, and it helped them come up with the funds to pay for future education options they took on or taught them some skills used later in life. It worked out well for them, and I’m sure for many of the individuals who have done military service. My point in stating all this is that I’m not about to hold it over anybody’s head that I didn’t have to use the military to get ahead in life. Meaning I’m not about to defer to those who want to act as though the fact that they did a stretch in uniform somehow makes them superior. I actually find such an attitude to be arrogant and unfit for anyone to have in our society. Particularly because it places a view that one can claim superiority for doing something that may well have been their only realistic option in life. And on this Memorial Day when we pay tribute to the contributions of military personnel throughout our history, perhaps I should even throw in that having such an attitude perhaps even qualifies as un-American!)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Apart from a shared mastery of television, Trump is, in many respects, the anti-Kennedy. The 70-year-old Republican, who had no political experience, was the oldest person ever elected US president. Kennedy, a 43-year-old Democrat who had served in the House and the Senate, was the youngest. At the 100-day mark, Trump’s public approval rating was 41%. Kennedy’s was 83%. Trump was granted five draft deferments during the Vietnam war; Kennedy received military honors for saving the lives of crewmates when their torpedo boat was struck by a Japanese destroyer during the second world war. Trump infamously does not read books, gives disjointed speeches and has claimed: “You have to be wealthy in order to be great.” Kennedy was fond of referencing ancient Greeks and Shakespeare, won a Pulitzer prize for the book Profiles in Courage, and once declared: “This country cannot afford to be materially rich and spiritually poor.”)

In this world, Sasse warns, “college graduates will change not only jobs but industries an average of three times by age thirty.” Childhood obesity has increased 500 percent in five decades. For “the most medicated generation of youth in history,” sales of ADHD drugs have increased 8 percent a year since 2010. Research shows that teenage texters exhibit addictive, sleep-depriving behaviors akin to those of habit-denying addictive gamblers. Teenagers clutching their devices “are spending nearly two-thirds of their waking hours with their eyes tied down and bodies stationary.” Five million Americans, many of them low-skilled young men, play 45 hours of video games per week.)

SPRINGFIELD STATE JOURNAL REGISTER
— Say ‘no’ to Springfield casino – Anita Bedell, Executive Drector, Illinois Church Action on Alcohol & Addiction Problems
http://www.sj-r.com/opinion/20170527/letter-say-no-to-springfield-casino
(FROM THE LETTER: According to the State Journal-Register, a developer, who also is a lobbyist who owns video gambling parlors and a medical marijuana dispensary, wants to put a casino in downtown Springfield. A casino is different from other businesses because of the social problems and costs gambling creates. Gambling comes with high costs of addiction, bankruptcy, crime, family problems and suicide. Springfield has more video gambling machines than any place in Illinois. Area residents have lost over $100 million in the 576 gambling machines. In April, area residents gambled away over $2.5 million. Sangamon County has the equivalent of a casino with 1,027 gambling machines. Adding a casino will increase problems for individuals, families and the community. The poor, minorities and the addicted will especially be negatively impacted. Gambling interests overestimate the amount of revenue projected and don’t include any costs in the calculation. According to definitive academic studies, the socioeconomic costs of casinos are $3 or more for every $1 in benefit. Over 75 percent of the revenue at casinos comes from slot/video gambling machines like the ones already operating here. Fewer workers are required, and they have a higher rate of gambling addiction than the general population. Rep. Tim Butler has filed an amendment to include a Springfield casino in the massive gambling expansion bill the Senate passed. Transparency is needed for this important public policy issue, not working behind closed doors out of the public view. Call the mayor, city council, and state legislators to voice your concerns.)

— Big retirement payouts tiny part of big pension mess – BGA
http://www.sj-r.com/news/20170527/big-retirement-payouts-tiny-part-of-big-pension-mess
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Illinois’ budget mess is the stepchild of Illinois’ pension mess, and nothing incites more steam-from-the-ears fury than the volume of six-figure annual retirement payouts — topped by one at $581,000 — pledged to former public workers. . .Just 4 percent of all beneficiaries this year are in line for pension paydays exceeding $100,000, with the biggest checks largely going to former school administrators as well as doctors and dentists at public teaching hospitals. Payments for the overwhelming majority of pensioners, most of whom don’t qualify for Social Security, are far more modest. The median pension in 2017 for retired suburban and downstate teachers stands at $52,016, the analysis shows, while the median for general state workers is $28,946. For university workers, the median pension stands at $26,101, while for non-public safety municipal workers outside of Chicago, it is $9,064.)

— What is the “tax gap” the White House wants to shrink? – KATHRYN WATSON  (DIERSEN: I worked for IRS for almost 9 years, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels, currently $79,563-$90,173.  I worked for GAO on audits of IRS’s Criminal Investigation Division for 3 years at the GS-13 Step 1-3 levels, currently $94,610-$100,917.)
http://www.cbsnews.com/news/what-is-the-tax-gap-the-white-house-wants-to-close/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The tax gap, simply put, is the amount in taxes individuals and companies owe the government, but that the government never receives. There are three reasons for that gap –some fail to pay any taxes, others underreport income, and yet others underpay their taxes, according to the IRS. Mulvaney said the president’s proposed tax plan doesn’t include an expectation that the gap will close, but pointed out how shrinking it would help the proposed $4 trillion budget. The tax gap in 2016 was $486 billion — out of the expected revenue from income and corporate taxes of roughly $1.9 trillion. . .However, Mulvaney’s hopes of closing or even significantly shrinking the tax gap may be a stretch. The tax gap has remained relatively stable during the last decade, with the majority of the gap stemming from individual, rather than corporate, tax, shortages. The total tax gap was $450 billion in 2006, and the total tax compliance rate was 83 percent, according to the Government Accountability Office. The Obama administration made attempts to close the gap by stepping up enforcement, but probably only reduced it by $50 billion to $100 billion over a decade, said Marc Goldwein, senior vice president and senior policy director at the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget. . .GAO, which analyzed the tax gap problem in 2012, pointed out that simplifying the tax code is only one way to help close the gap. GAO said the IRS also needs to improve customer service lines for taxpayers, devote additional resources to enforcement, expand compliance checks before issuing refunds and modernize information systems, among other things, to address the gap.)

NEW YORK TIMES
— Chinese Student in Maryland Is Criticized at Home for Praising U.S. – MIKE IVES  (DIERSEN: Overwhelmingly, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes promote China.)
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/23/world/asia/chinese-student-fresh-air-yang-shuping.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE:  Speaking at the University of Maryland, Yang Shuping, a graduating senior from China, sprinkled her upbeat commencement speech with observations that drew warm applause: The air was far cleaner in the United States than in China, she said, and she could openly discuss racism, sexism and politics in ways that she had never before dreamed possible. Growing up in China, “I was convinced that only authorities owned the narrative,” Ms. Yang, a theater and psychology major from the southern city of Kunming, told the crowd in a basketball arena in College Park, Md. “Only authorities could define the truth.” The speech on Sunday drew harsh criticism, however, from some of Ms. Yang’s Chinese classmates in Maryland and from legions of social media users in China, many of whom accused her of selling out her homeland. Even the city of Kunming weighed in, saying in a message on Weibo, China’s Twitter-like platform, that her comments about the city’s air pollution were “not related to us.”)

WALL STREET JOURNAL
— HARDCOPY ARTICLE TITLE: Teens Miss Out on Summer Jobs  A struggling retail sector isn’t the employer it once was, plus, teenagers themselves are forgoing work. – Imani Moise  (DIERSEN: What summer jobs did you have and what did you do with the money that you earned?  I did yard work and delivered newspapers during the summers of 1962, 1963, and 1964; I washed dishes during the summer of 1965; I cleaned golf shoes, chipped slag, and pumped gasoline during the summer of 1966; and I delivered mail during the summers of 1967, 1968, and 1969.  I used the money that I earned to buy a 1958 Chevy BelAir in 1964, a new 1966 Pontiac Tempest Sprint in 1966, a new 1968 Oldsmobile 442 in 1967, and a new 1969 Dodge Charger SE in 1967.  I used the money that I earned to pay for my UIC and NIU college expenses.)
https://www.wsj.com/articles/mall-troubles-threaten-a-rite-of-passage-the-teen-job-1495540801
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Though the numbers of working teens has risen slightly in the last few years, overall teen employment has steadily declined for nearly 40 years, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The rate of teen participation in the labor force during the month of July peaked in 1978 at 72%, falling to 43% last year. The BLS links the decline to increased enrollment in summer school and heightened emphasis on extracurricular activities. In the bureau’s most recent survey, less than 9% of teens who didn’t have a job said they were interested in finding one. The trend is setting off alarm bells for many who believe that teens are missing out on opportunities to learn the soft skills needed for their adult careers. Hoping to save up money for a car, Danei Wesley applied for summer jobs at Wal-Mart, Forever 21 and Charlotte Russe stores near her hometown of Gary, Ind. The 18-year-old, a rising sophomore at Indiana University Bloomington, followed up on each of her applications online, by phone or even in person, but was told in each case the position was already filled. Looking closer to home has proven successful for Ms. Wesley. A member of her church offered her a job for $8 an hour at an Italian-ice store, and not long after, she found another job through the father of a cheer-squad teammate, tutoring children in math and science for $9 an hour. Large employers often assume teens lack the punctuality and professionalism needed on the job, said Nancy Snyder, chief executive of Commonwealth Corp., a Massachusetts-based nonprofit that helps find employment for teens. Ms. Snyder recommends that young job seekers follow Ms. Wesley’s lead and try grocery stores or local mom-and-pop stores.)

— Paid parental leave great for families – Editorial  (DIERSEN: Democrats are nasty moral relativists who believe that their end justifies their means. They are nasty disciples of Saul Alinsky. To promote hatred against my wife and I, my Democrat GAO superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates viciously demonized us, viciously denigrated us, and viciously condemned us as being filthy rich DINKs (dual income, no kids) because we gave up trying to have children, because we did not adopt, and because we did not become foster parents.  They stressed that Money Magazine reported in its February, 1978 issue that we planned to have children. They stressed that I had not volunteered for travel assignments because we were trying to have children. In 1989, they used the aforesaid to punish me a) by throwing me off audits of IRS, b) by assigning me to a 6-month travel assignment that many of my coworkers wanted and were better qualified to take, c) by giving me an extremely unfair performance appraisal, and d) by ranked me at the bottom of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes. They might have succeeded in driving me out of GAO if Henry Hyde had not interceded.)

Following the fundraiser, the Associated Press published a short story without a byline that was “grossly inaccurate,” NHGOP adviser Patrick Hynes told local television outlet WMUR-9. “President Donald Trump’s counselor Kellyanne Conway has told supporters in New Hampshire they should ‘just ignore’ his critics and the incessant chatter about the scandals dogging him,” the “reporter,” later learned to be Melanie Plenda, wrote for the AP. The report also said about 150 attended, and attendees were “largely friendly” to Conway, but “some people in attendance withheld applause when Conway let loose with snarky comments about Democrat Hillary Clinton.” “The Associated Press in New Hampshire appears to be engaged in leftwing activism rather than journalism,” Hynes told Breitbart News. “And Melanie Plenda is a leftwing activist not a journalist.” “They conspired to sneak this leftwing activist into an event for which they were not credentialed and deliberately misreported on the attendance and the enthusiasm with which Kellyanne Conway was greeted,” Hynes said. “Republicans across the country should be aware that the AP cannot be trusted to be fair and balanced,” Hynes said. Breitbart News has obtained a screenshot of Plenda’s Facebook page from Nov. 10, 2016–just days after Donald Trump won the presidential election–that shows her making an explicit call to action against the then-incoming Trump administration.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: President Donald Trump made an impassioned plea for support from minority voters during his election campaign by asking them, “What do you have to lose?” On Tuesday, they got an answer, as did many of the rural, poor and working-class voters who propelled him into office. In his fiscal 2018 budget proposal, Trump asked Congress for $3.6 trillion in spending cuts that would mean steep reductions in food stamps, Medicaid health insurance payments, disability benefits, low-income housing assistance and block grants that fund meals-on-wheels for the elderly. The plan found little favor in Congress, even among Republican lawmakers from districts and states that gave Trump wide margins in the November election, and it had Democrats talking about a deal on spending that would exclude the White House.)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-illinois-middle-class-0523-biz-20170522-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Meantime, Illinois’ median household income among the middle class has grown very modestly over that period, to $80,800 in 2015 from $79,300 in 1980, adjusting for inflation. But high-income households have seen their median income jump 14.5 percent, to $192,900 from $168,500. The median pay for low-income households has barely budged, to $26,100 from $25,800. . . Measuring the middle class is challenging, the report said, in part because it isn’t clear how to define it given associations with education and occupation type. The report’s analysis measured middle class by income level, adjusted for household size. So households earning more than two-thirds of the state’s median income and less than double the state’s median income — between $43,000 and $130,000 — are considered middle class.)

While a spokesman didn’t reveal exactly how many positions are being sought, he said Chicago is hoping to get hundreds of applicants. The bureau didn’t provide a breakdown of agents by race or gender, but acknowledged: “The diversity numbers of the FBI are not where we want them to be, unfortunately, but we have made it our highest priority to change that over the next few years.” Chicago agents start at around $71,000, with salaries rising to $110,000 over five years, a spokesman said.)

— GOP seeks recruits to oppose Mendoza, Madigan  GOP searching for ‘electable’ candidates – Mark Maxwell (DIERSEN: Political parties exist to help elect candidates who can and will defend and advance their platform. According to my critics/opponents, a) the Republican Party platform is the problem, b) the more planks in that platform that a candidate supports, the less likely that they will win, and c) to win, candidates should stress those planks that they reject.  My critics especially want candidates who reject the immigration, traditional family, right to life, illegal drugs, gambling, and Second Amendment planks.  They especially want candidates who hate Trump.  They especially want candidates who are minority, female, and/or younger.)
http://www.illinoishomepage.net/news/local-news/gop-seeks-recruits-to-oppose-mendoza-madigan/719204123
(FROM THE ARTICLE:  Governor Bruce Rauner and his inner circle of political advisors are holding private meetings to vet candidates they hope could unseat Comptroller Susana Mendoza and Attorney General Lisa Madigan in the 2018 election. Democrats running to unseat Rauner have garnered most of the public attention to date, but behind closed doors, Republicans are already forming a deep roster and consulting with top party donors before making any public commitments to back candidates. The secretive casting calls are starting to creating tension within the party as leaders mull over their next move. According to sources with knowledge of these discussions, Rauner’s chief political strategist Mike Zolnierowicz is actively recruiting and meeting with candidates who may show potential to upstage some of the governor’s political rivals in a statewide election. By all accounts, these conversations remain in the very early stages, and several of the candidates themselves remain uncertain about their own standing with the party leadership. Former Comptroller Leslie Munger is rumored to be angling for a chance to regain her seat in 2018, but party leaders have privately expressed concerns about her electability after losing a rough election last fall. Although he did not respond to requests for comment, Zolnierowicz continues to explore other options for the high stakes Comptroller race. After losing to Mendoza last November, Munger was awarded a pay raise to a salary of $138,000 as one of two deputy governors in the Rauner administration. When asked about her plans to run for reelection, she replied, “No comment.” Republicans openly admit they are gearing up for a broader campaign to overtake a majority in the House, which would effectively demote reigning Speaker Michael Madigan. The party would need to pick up 9 seats to unseat Madigan. It only managed to gain 4 seats during the 2016 election, narrowly escaping the Democratic supermajority. Representative Tim Butler (R-Springfield) acknowledges unseating Madigan is a long shot, but he contends Democrats have several vulnerable candidates in districts where he believes the GOP can compete. Defeating Madigan’s daughter may prove to be the tougher task. Zolnierowicz, who left his post as Rauner’s chief of staff to become the party’s top strategist last summer, is said to have come down to a short list of candidates to oppose Madigan, yet concerns about name recognition and credentials prolong the decision. Rauner’s campaign communications director Kirsten Kukowski and Illinois GOP spokesmen Steven Yaffe and Aaron DeGroot declined to comment for this article.)

(FROM THE POSTING: Student loan debt is now a $1.3-trillion problem burdening 44 million borrowers. Experts are talking about the effects of student debt on the economy, but they aren’t talking about its disproportionate effects on women. AAUW takes a close look at that oversight in the new research report Deeper in Debt: Women and Student Loans. Women’s success in postsecondary education is shrinking the gender pay gap and opening up opportunities, but at what price? Women not only take on more student debt than men do, but women also pay back their loans more slowly because of the gender pay gap. While higher education is seen as a path to financial stability, taking on student debt is a gamble, and it’s a bigger risk for some women: Low-income students, students with dependent children, and students who drop out of college are all at higher risk of defaulting on student loans. AAUW advocates for grants, programs, and resources that can keep college accessible for those who have the most to gain.)

May 18 Morning Edition

VARIOUS
— DIERSEN HEADLINE: Roger Ailes dies.  I had the honor of leading a group that succeeded in 2002 in forcing Comcast to start carrying Fox News Channel in Wheaton and in other western suburbs.  Fox News Channel employees in Chicago told me that Ailes was fully aware of my efforts and fully supported my efforts.  Of course, to this day, members of the following groups in Wheaton vehemently hate me for bringing Fox News Channel to Wheaton on cable: anti-Trump, anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, anti-German Americans, anti-draft avoiders (except Bill Clinton), and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America longer than their ancestors.
