(FROM THE ARTICLE: Agencies here that serve refugees and other immigrants seeking asylum say their caseload has soared in recent weeks and now is at the highest level it’s hit for several years. For instance, Heartland Human Care Services reports that as of this morning it was housing 240 children who crossed the border unaccompanied by adults. On Dec. 3 it housed none. “I have no doubt we’re going to hit capacity” of the 359 beds Chicago-based Heartland operates under a contract with the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, said Executive Director David Sinski. “You’ve read about what’s happening. I’m sure they’re going to keep coming.” At this point, the wave appears likely to at least match surges in 2018 and 2014, Sinski says. Though the kids are young, “almost all” are teenagers from the Golden Triangle area of Central America, he says. “They’re seeking safety. They’re escaping violence that is unimaginable.” The young refugees are usually flown to Chicago by the federal government and temporarily housed here by Heartland before being given permanent homes. Another group that deals with family units, the Interfaith Committee for Detained Immigrants, says it now is meeting 30 to 50 people a week who show up on Greyhound buses straight from the border. The group expects the number to keep growing even though it’s at the highest level its seen in years. Colin McCormick, the agency’s program director for refugee assistance, says the surge began in late February as the Biden administration eased some rules and “gets a little bigger” every week. Many are stuck on Greyhound buses for at least two days before they arrive in Chicago, where they may have even longer journeys ahead, depending on their final destination.” As is the case with Heartland, “the vast bulk” of the arrivals are from Central America. But a few are from other countries, such as Haiti, entering the U.S. via Mexico. Though it may be controversial with some U.S. natives, to the immigrants, trying to enter here “is not a choice,” McCormick asserts. “They’re doing what they need to stay alive.” Most of those arriving here end up not staying in Chicago. Heartland says its clients, who are placed with sponsors, usually family members vetted by the agency, end up on the East and West coasts, not Chicago. All are tested for COVID when they arrive here, with some also tested on the border. Catholic Charities also runs a similar program for unaccompanied youngsters, with some finding their way here on their own or via other agencies. Metropolitan Chicago has a large Mexican-American population, with growing numbers of people from Guatemala, Honduras and other Central American countries. To some degree the influx is seasonal, tailing off in the cold winter months before building again when it’s warm. If that’s the case this year, the tide may have a ways to run before it peaks.)

— Soaring Stock Market Means More TSP Millionaires. The rising stock market has rewarded TSP investors who have stayed invested for the long term. – Ian Smith
(DIERSEN: The TSP was established in 1987. I contributed the maximum amount to the TSP until my Democrat GAO superiors succeeded in forcing me to take their early retirement “offer” in 1997 when I was 49 years old. My Civil Service Retirement System pension is dramatically reduced because a) my Democrat GAO superiors forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, delayed my promotions to GS-11, GS-12, and GS-13, and forced me to take a $20,361 (21%) pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980. My Democrat IRS superiors did not promote me beyond GS-12. My Democrat Post Office forced me resign in 1969.)
https://www.fedsmith.com/2021/04/01/soaring-stock-market-means-more-tsp-millionaires/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: As the stock market continues to climb to new record levels, it is helping federal employees with their retirement savings as well. The number of federal employee millionaires investing in the Thrift Savings Plan has hit a new high. According to the latest data from the TSP, as of the end of the first quarter 2021, there are now 84,808 TSP investors with a balance of $1 million or more. The highest account balance is now pushing $10 million; the lucky current or former federal employee with this designation has a total TSP account balance of $9,318,238. The number of millionaires in the TSP has increased 12.4% since the end of 2020.)
