HERALD NEWS
— Bolingbrook mayor plans to retire Village trustee: ‘He got things done for Bolingbrook’ – FELIX SARVER
https://www.theherald-news.com/2020/07/23/bolingbrook-mayor-plans-to-retire/ai6pgnc/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: After roughly 35 years, Roger Claar plans to no longer serve as the mayor of Bolingbrook. Claar did not respond to calls inquiring about his retirement Thursday and even hung up the phone after he was contacted by The Herald-News, but Village Trustee Michael Carpanzano said Claar is retiring because he wants to spend more time with his family. Carpanzano said he didn’t think there was another mayor besides Claar more connected with residents. “Everyone knows him as the guy who is going to get things done and he got things done for Bolingbrook,” Carpanzano said. Carpanzano said Claar’s last village board meeting will be on Tuesday. He said Claar has hinted at his retirement all year and that he plans to spend time in California with his granddaughter. He said Claar will likely continue to spend time in Illinois as well. Claar first became mayor in 1986 to fill a vacancy and has been elected to the post 10 times since then. Carpanzano credited the explosion of Bolingbrook’s population over the decades to Claar. “He brought not only an industrial base to the town but a retail base, a hospital, an airport, a beautiful country club and entire outdoor shopping center. His vision really saw all that through,” Carpanzano said. Claar was the subject of a 2007 Chicago magazine profile that noted during his time as mayor he’s overseen a “huge increase” in the range of housing prices, a “near doubling” of the village’s population and that he’s “brought in business, most obviously in the form of the shallow canyon of distribution centers you drive through on I-55 between Chicago and I-80.” “Along the way, he’s bolstered himself just as dramatically, amassing a huge campaign war chest and making strategic political ties to become one of the most powerful mayors in Illinois,” according to Chicago magazine. Claar’s mayoral opponent Jackie Traynere, a Will County board member, claimed Claar plans to remain in control of Bolingbrook and fund the next mayor’s campaign. “The only reason he’s not putting his name on the ballot is because he knows he’ll be beaten,” Traynere said. She suggested Claar would support Bolingbrook Deputy Mayor Michael Lawler as the next mayor. Lawler failed to respond to a message and Claar failed to return a call on the issue on Thursday afternoon. Traynere said when people look at communities that surround Bolingbrook, such as Naperville and Romeoville, they see positive growth. But what they don’t see in those communities is the massive debt that Bolingbrook has, she said. “So when you give Roger credit for the growth, you need to give him credit for the debt,” she said. Traynere fell 151 votes short in the 2017 election that highlighted Claar’s controversial support of U.S. President Donald Trump. Traynere said Claar inviting Trump to Bolingbrook Golf Club — also known as the “Rog Mahal” — was the catalyst for her run for mayor. Trump’s visit in 2016 led to up to 200 people protesting outside the golf club for several hours. Claar has said he doesn’t agree with everything Trump says but also thinks what Trump says has been twisted and distorted. Claar’s support of Trump also attracted vandalism at his home on Sept. 20, 2017, from Rae Tuszynski, 32, who spray-painted a message on his garage calling him a “Nazi Trump lover” and at least seven swastikas on his property. Tuszynski pleaded guilty to threatening a public official, criminal damage to property and committing a hate crime against Claar. “With all due respect, I’m a transgender Puerto Rican and you (have a) hate crime against an old white man,” Tuszynski said.)

WJOL
— Longtime Mayor Of Bolingbrook Retires Months Before His Term Expires
https://www.wjol.com/wjol-exclusive-longtime-mayor-of-bolingbrook-retires-months-before-his-term-expires/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Mayor of Bolingbrook will not finish out his last term in office. Mayor Roger Claar has said he would not seek re-election next year but is now cutting his time short. He will retire at the end of this month on July 31st. Mayor Claar stated at the last council meeting that Tuesday, July 28th will be his last council meeting. Mayor Claar tells WJOL that his 5-year old granddaughter who lives in California with his daughter Lindsey and her husband Trevor is calling his name. He wants to spend more time with his wife Pat and will be traveling to California a lot, although he says he will not be moving there. He’ll be 75 in November and says his daughter who is 37 grew up while he was a very active mayor and wasn’t home much. While she was OK with that, Claar says he doesn’t want to do the same with his granddaughter. A replacement will be selected by the existing board of trustees and state statute dictates the choice must come from the board. Claar was a village trustee for five years and appointed Mayor in 1986 to fill a vacancy. He is Bolingbrook’s longest-serving Mayor. He is the only Bolingbrook Mayor to be elected to consecutive terms. He was elected Mayor in 1987, and every 4 fours year after that.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Bolingbrook Mayor Roger Claar announced during the July 14 Village Board Meeting that the meeting on Tuesday will be his last as he is retiring from the office prior to the completion of his term, and will not be seeking re-election. He will retire on July 31, WJOL reported. Claar told WJOL that he wants to spend more time with his 5-year-old granddaughter who lives in California with her parents Lindsey and Trevor. He said he wants to spend more time with his wife Pat, travelling to see his daughter and her family. Claar appointed mayor in 1986 to fill a vacancy, while he was still a village trustee. Since then, he has been re-elected every four years. Earlier this month, Will County Board member Jackie Traynere (D-Bolingbrook) announced her plans to run for mayor of Bolingbrook during the April 6, 2021 election. During the 2017 mayoral election that was rife with accusations of deception, negative campaigning and connections to President Donald Trump, Traynere had conceded to Claar who had won by just 151 votes with over 13,000 votes cast that night. Village Trustee Michael Carpanzano said in a social media post that a replacement will be selected by the existing board of trustees, and state statute dictates the choice must come from the board.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: A small, mostly white group of suburban Republican candidates looking to unseat various Democratic lawmakers this fall — in a variety of state and federal elected offices — called a news conference at the scene of Monday’s mass shooting in Chicago’s Gresham neighborhood, a storied African American community. Mark Curran, the former Lake County sheriff who’s challenging incumbent U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, called the shooters “evil,” and went on say that crime and politics have been interwoven for decades. Saying mobster Al Capone once “owned the elected officials in Chicago,” Curran suggested that “today it’s the Black Gangster Disciples …” before rattling off the names of a few other street gangs. He then accused Durbin of “standing on the floor of the U.S. Senate” and saying “he doesn’t want President Trump to send in any help with regards to the streets of Chicago.” You can watch the news conference, where several candidates said expanding the police force was among the solutions to tamping down crime, here. In a letter to the president dated Tuesday, Durbin and fellow Illinois Democratic U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth stated in part: “You have indicated you may send additional federal agents to the city Chicago to conduct policing activities that traditionally are handled by local law enforcement. We strongly urge you to refrain from taking this action, which is opposed by Governor Pritzker, Mayor Lightfoot and other local leaders.”)
