CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Stevenson High School political event draws ire of Lake County GOP: ‘I’m disappointed we weren’t extended (an invitation)’ – KARIE ANGELL LUC

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The event had a distinct pro-Democrat, anti-Donald Trump feel, something that did not sit well with the chairman of the Lake County Republican Party. Signage and posters around the room were pro-Democratic. An anti-Trump poster was seen near the speaker’s podium. Some who spoke during the event dramatically called for an end to the Trump era. County GOP Chairman Mark Shaw said he was “taken back” when he heard about the event via email blast. “Generally, I’m disappointed we weren’t extended (an invitation),” he said. ”Frankly, my assessment of Stevenson High School is that they have basically decided to support liberal causes, and they aren’t interested in hearing different viewpoints. “I’m extremely disappointed given the amount of money that taxpayers pay to support Stevenson High School,” he added. “I do worry about the future of education.” . . . On Saturday, there was no evidence of Republican activism at the event. “Republicans generally don’t try to cause a scene,” Shaw said. However, he added, “Republicans believe in free speech.”)

— ‘Just go ahead. Let’s do this.’ Democratic presidential contender Pete Buttigieg takes on protester at Chicago fundraiser. – BILL RUTHHART (DIERSEN: I should write a book about my “Republican” critics/opponents who hint/imply/argue/shout that I should be barred from promoting, attending, and reporting on Republican political events. Better yet, I should sue them. They hint/imply/argue/shout that my promoting, attending, and reporting on such events causes Republican candidates to lose elections.)
https://www.chicagotribune.com/politics/elections/ct-pete-buttigieg-protest-chicago-fundraiser-20200125-schmhxuplvfvdatdmh4rebibc4-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The presidential hopeful replied, “I respect your activism, but sometimes love is not expressed by interruption. Sometimes love is expressed in a different way.” Buttigieg then offered a common political tactic to encourage a protester to quiet down — he promised to meet afterward. The protester remained undeterred, shouting some more. That prompted a campaign donor to yell, “You’re not the only one in the room!” After the disruption went on for more than three minutes, Buttigieg finally relented, “You know what? Just go ahead. Let’s do this.” The protester, who identified himself as queer and nonbinary but did not give a name, brought up the South Bend police shooting death last summer of a black robbery suspect, Eric Logan, by a white police officer. The shooting, which the officer’s body camera and dashcam failed to record, remains under investigation. “Mayor Pete, as somebody who says you want to unify communities, as someone who says they want to follow the rules of the road, there are police officers in South Bend who kill people. What’s his name Logan …” the protester said, trying to recall the name of the shooting victim. “Not what’s his name,” a visibly perturbed Buttigieg said. “His name is Eric Logan.” “There’s so many, I can’t keep track anymore,” the protester shot back. “That’s false,” Buttigieg replied. Then, finally, came the question: “How can we trust you will show up for queer and trans people and people of color when there were eight community meetings in South Bend about a police officer who killed someone in your community and you did not go to them?” Buttigieg replied by noting he set up the series of community meetings with “rank-and-file officers to elected leaders to some of my harshest critics, and people who have been in my administration all along” to “empower the community” to help come up with solutions for better policing in South Bend.)

Today, he owns 94 dealerships, 15 of which are Chevrolet stores, from the Carolinas to California (none in Michigan). But the Corvette that Hendrick, 70, bought on Saturday is in a different league. It’s the one of his boyhood dreams. It is the first mid-engine 2020 Corvette Stingray. “I’ve been going to those auctions for 25 to 30 years and I’ve bought a lot of No.1s at auction for charity,” Hendrick told the Free Press this week. “But nothing like this car. This had bidders from all over the world. It was so much drama. When you have the CEO of General Motors on the stage, that’s a big deal.” Hendrick happens to own one of the largest private collections of Corvettes in the world, including several with VIN number 0001. He is a member of the Corvette Hall of Fame Class of 2015. So it’s fitting that the mid-engine Corvette with VIN number 0001 would wind up in Hendrick’s garage, even at an eye-popping $3 million. The money is donated to the Detroit Children’s Fund.)

I would focus on past and present employees of Wheaton, Milton Township, DuPage County, and Illinois who claim to be religious, conservative, and/or Republican.)
https://www.newsbusters.org/blogs/business/joseph-vazquez/2020/01/20/shocker-nonpartisan-gaos-union-overwhelmingly-supports-dems
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Government Accountability Office (GAO) said Jan. 16 that President Donald Trump broke the law when he withheld aid from Ukraine. The union for that “independent, nonpartisan” agency naturally supports Democrats. Just don’t expect the media to tell you about it. The GAO calls itself an “independent, nonpartisan” congressional agency. Liberal outlets, continuing the media-driven impeachment crusade, gave full credence to the GAO’s self-proclaimed “nonpartisan” status. The GAO Employees Organization and its bureaucrats are currently represented by the International Federation of Professionals and Technical Engineers (IFPTE), AFL-CIO & CLC, a labor union that represents workers in both the U.S. and Canada. Here’s the problem: IFPTE’s political action committee gave 100 percent of its political contributions ($36,250) to Democratic candidates in 2016, 89 percent of its political contributions ($61,950) to Democratic candidates in 2018, and currently 75 percent of its political contributions ($26,900) to Democratic candidates for the 2020 electoral cycle. The GAO Employees Organization, “the union and professional association” of GAO bureaucrats, stated in its website that it “is an affiliate of IFPTE, designated as IFPTE Local 1921, named after the year GAO was created.” If your credibility as an agency hinges on you being “independent, nonpartisan,” why do your bureaucrats choose to be represented by a union that’s overtly partisan? Moreover, why are liberal media outlets ignoring this? The Wall Street Journal’s editorial page assistant editor James Freeman wrote a Jan. 17 op-ed acknowledging the IFPTE donations in 2016, and said this raises a “reasonable question about the use of the term ‘nonpartisan’” when referencing the GAO. No kidding? The Los Angeles Times editorial board published an entire puff piece Jan. 17, headlined: “Editorial: Unlike Lev Parnas, the GAO has no credibility problem. It also says Trump broke the law.” In the piece, The LA Times Editorial Board called the agency “resolutely nonpartisan.” No mention of the GAO-IFPTE connection, nor the latter’s apparent political bias was found in the piece. But The LA Times wasn’t the only outlet to ignore this connection. The New York Times, in its Jan. 16 report on the GAO’s assessment of the Trump-Ukraine issue, also touted that “The accountability office is an independent, nonpartisan agency that works for Congress.” No mention of the GAO-IFPTE connection in The Times piece. Politico also, in a Jan. 16 report, referred to the GAO as “an independent nonpartisan government watchdog that responds to congressional requests,” without mentioning it’s union’s affiliation with the IFPTE or the IFPTE PAC’s history of giving vastly disproportionate amounts of cash to Democrats. The Washington Post published a piece on Jan. 16, where they were sure to note the GAO’s independence in a sub-headline: “The nonpartisan Government Accountability Office severely undermines a core Trump impeachment defense” [emphasis added]. No mention of the GAO-IFPTE connection in that Post piece, however. Pleading for the president’s impeachment is all that matters at this point for the liberal media. And if haphazardly saying the partisanly-suspect GAO is “independent” and “nonpartisan” does the trick, c’est la vie.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Who are you, really? That’s a question most employers want to know the answer to. Beyond your cover letter and resume or CV, what are you about? Are you trustworthy, respectful, responsible? Are you a hard worker? Will you follow through on promises? Because most people are on their best behavior during the interview process, it can be hard for hiring managers or employers to tell. So they do the same thing your Bumble date does: they Google you. In particular, they look at your Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter, and other social media profiles you have publicly available. Then they browse. Or scope. Or scour. According to a survey by CareerBuilder, a full 70 percent of employers “use social media to screen candidates before hiring.” Even more striking is the follow-on statistic: 54 percent of employers surveyed said they chose not to hire a candidate based on content found on their social media profile(s). Of those hiring managers who chose not to hire someone due to their social media presence, the top reasons given for why were that candidates had:

1. Posted provocative or inappropriate photos, videos or information (39 percent)
2. Posted information about drinking or using drugs (38 percent)
3. Made discriminatory comments related to race, gender, religion (32 percent)
4. Bad-mouthed previous company or fellow employee (30 percent)
5. Lied about qualifications (27 percent)
6. Had poor communication skills: 27 percent
7. Been linked to criminal behavior: 26 percent
8. Shared confidential information from previous employers: 23 percent

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Good Sunday morning, everyone! How do you feel about the new Illinois law legalizing marijuana? There are pros and cons to it, as there are to any topic, and everyone has his or her own opinion. I hadn’t given a lot of thought on it until I went to Walmart shopping this week. The smell of pot was everywhere — walking by people in the grocery aisles and really strong at the self-checkout lanes on the east end of the store. As a joke I said I think I could have gotten high without even smoking it if I stayed in there much longer. But here is the reality of what I am saying. The strong aroma of marijuana means to me that they most likely smoked it shortly before they came into the store, possibly while driving to the store. It is against the law to smoke marijuana while driving, just as it is against the law to drink alcohol while driving. The possession of marijuana in a motor vehicle, by the driver or passenger, is not permitted unless it is in a sealed, odor-proof, child-resistant cannabis container. What else is not permitted according to the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services? Using cannabis knowingly in close physical proximity to anyone under the age of 21 years of age who is not a registered medical cannabis patient. Smoking cannabis in any place where smoking is prohibited under the Smoke Free Illinois Act. Facilitating the use of cannabis by any person who is not allowed to use cannabis. The only positive effect of smoking marijuana that I have found is the reduction of chronic pain and it cures a type of epilepsy known as Lennox-Gestaut Syndrome. To me the negative effects outweigh the good, though. Smoking marijuana causes the heart rate to increase by at least 20 beats per minute, and the risk of heart attacks is four times as high as for a person who doesn’t smoke it. Marijuana causes a sting in the mouth and throat and often triggers coughing. Scientist found that people who smoke it regularly had respiratory problems. It also has four times the amount of tar and twice as many carcinogens than tobacco, therefore giving a greater risk to developing lung cancer. As for mothers who smoked marijuana during pregnancy, their babies were born with a delayed neurological development. Causing them problems with memory and responding to visual stimuli. I will admit I was shocked to see the extremely long line of people waiting January one to purchase the product. Many of the dispensaries in Illinois ran out and they and the state made more money in that one day then originally predicted. But just because the state of Illinois decided it was a good idea to legalize marijuana doesn’t mean it’s legal to smoke where you want, when you want, just keep that in mind. Give. Advocate. Volunteer. Live United.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Democrats need to utilize “cold-blooded” tactics to win the 2020 election for the sake of the country’s future, during an interview with Bill Maher. Calling her the “Iron Lady,” Maher asked Pelosi on his Friday show for her thoughts on the current state of the Democratic Party. “I feel like the Democratic Party is very often the victim of their own purity tests,” Maher said. “I don’t worry about that,” Pelosi said. “You have to be ready to take a punch. And you have to be ready to throw a punch, for the children.” Pelosi, 79, said the Democratic Party needs to use “disciplined, focused, cold-blooded” tactics to win in 2020, just as they did in 2018. Maher concluded the interview by saying, “Good to have your cold-blooded self on our side.” Earlier in the interview, Maher, 63, insisted the Left must refrain from hating the president’s supporters, even if they hate the president himself. “You can hate Trump. You can’t hate the people who like him,” Maher said, warning, “That way lies, literally, civil war.” Pelosi agreed with Maher’s sentiment, adding that she respects constituents with whom she disagrees. Pelosi also mentioned Trump’s impeachment, saying, “And you’re impeached forever! No matter what the Senate does, it can never be erased.” Pelosi said Trump gave the Democrats no choice but to impeach him, claiming, “The president was self-impeaching almost every single day.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Robert Hyde, a GOP congressional candidate who has become embroiled in the impeachment investigation, on Saturday said he had been operating Facebook pages displaying posts in his defense while purporting to be run by groups of Trump supporters in different states. After The Wall Street Journal reported on the pages’ apparent connection to Mr. Hyde, Facebook Inc. late Friday took them down. A Facebook spokeswoman said when the company finds networks of pages misleading people by concealing who is behind them, it requires owners to show additional information. Mr. Hyde didn’t respond Friday to Journal requests for comment, but he tweeted a public response Saturday. “WTF Facebook?! Please make this right and return our pages. I and other editors put a lot of time and money into these pages. You didn’t give us a deadline for the disclaimer and you said it was only necessary for and if we wanted to boost,” Mr. Hyde tweeted on Saturday, and linked to the Journal’s article. Boosting is when a Facebook user pays to reach new audiences. “We haven’t boosted in two years. No warning, nothing,” Mr. Hyde continued. “Do you all work for Adam Schiff? #facebook #stoleourpages #theft”)

AMERICAN THINKER
— The plight of the unwoke – Lynne Lechter (DIERSEN: My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes paint themselves as being very woke. I should write a book about them. They paint me as being someone who has unfairly benefitted from my being White, male, Missouri Synod Lutheran, German American, conservative, Republican, American, raised in Crete, raised by a stay-at-home mother, having good health, having ancestors who have been in America for a long time, earning college degrees, earning professional certifications, earning a professional license, working for the federal government for almost 30 years, getting married, and not having children.)
https://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2020/01/the_plight_of_the_unwoke.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Urban slang defines a person being “woke” or “wokeness” as someone being cognizant of “social justice.” Social justice, in this worldview, encompasses racism, feminism, gender fluidity, inequality, and “undocumented visitors” (illegal aliens). The very word connotes a superior state of being in which any opposing opinion is perceived as a personal affront, or even attack, and triggers the necessity for safe spaces. Opposing viewpoints are bludgeoned on college campuses and in the mainstream media as racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, gun-toting, and Bible-thumping idiocies. Oh, the elitism — and blindness! The woke are really the unwoke — those with no sense of self-awareness of the hypocritical and self-aggrandizing images they actually project to the rest of us. Examples abound.)

— NowThis Isn’t Journalism – Adam Guillette
https://townhall.com/columnists/adamguillette/2020/01/18/now-this-isnt-journalism-n2559692
(FROM THE ARTICLE: NowThis and its allies are so desperate to smear President Donald Trump that they’re resorting to lies about the Holocaust. In one of the outlet’s latest propaganda pieces, NowThis sat down with a radical leftwing group of campus Jews and Palestinians and gave them an opportunity to promote their extremist views. While it’s nice to see Jews and Arabs sitting together in peace, the bloom comes off the rose when we learn that they have only come together to promote lies and hate. Perhaps the biggest lie perpetuated in the video occurred when one member of the group compared the plight of immigrants on the American border to that of Anne Frank.)

https://www.wsj.com/articles/after-stretch-iras-what-retirement-breaks-could-congress-chop-next-11579257004
(FROM THE ARTICLE: • Require annual payouts from Roth IRAs. Current law requires annual withdrawals from traditional IRAs for savers who are age 72 and older, but it doesn’t require them for Roth IRA owners. Ed Slott, an IRA specialist and certified public accountant, says this proposal would take away one of the biggest draws of a Roth IRA, which is payout flexibility. He also worries that it could open the door to indirect taxes, in the same way that tax-free municipal-bond income is included when calculating Social Security taxes and Medicare premiums.)
