(THE COMMENT: We need a real conservative Republican candidate for Governor in this primary. One with some kind of elective office experience, as a decent size city mayor, or as a county chairman or sheriff, something like that, if we don’t have a good congressman or state legislator to run. Rauner will be defeated next November if he gets the nomination. This is just a fact, not just a wish. He maintained the tolerance of the GOP base until this summer, but his several capitulations this summer have killed whatever good will he had built up in the GOP. There is no reason for us to be enthused with him next November, so he cannot win. The GOP needs to recognize what it failed to recognize with the Mark Kirk seat in 2016 and the Percy seat in 1984: sometimes a candidate is lost before the election even arrives, so your best bet is to find some good new blood to run in the primary. We should’ve run Corcoran in 1984. We should’ve run Jack Ryan in 2004.
