— How the wealthy Obamas could become wealthier – Thomas Heath  (DIERSEN: Democrats demonize, denigrate, and condemn Republicans who are wealthy, but not Democrats who are wealthy.)
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/business/wp/2017/01/23/how-the-wealthy-obamas-could-become-wealthier/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Speaker? Professor? Author? Board member? Owner of a professional basketball team? Those are among the job prospects being bandied about for Barack Obama’s time post-presidency. All ex-presidents receive an annual pension of $205,700 annually, which is pegged to inflation. And Obama’s kicked in on Jan. 20. They also receive federal money for offices and administrative help. Beyond that, they are on their own. Obama is a relatively young man of 55, so the ex-president — who is kicking back for a few days near Palm Springs in Rancho Mirage, Calif. — could spend decades making a living from several income streams. One safe bet is public speaking, which has enriched most former presidents. An ex-president can command $250,000 or more for a speech. “We don’t know what Obama is going to do, but I’m comfortable saying he isn’t going to go out and grab as many high-priced speeches as he can get,” said James Thurber, director of the Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies at American University. “He’s going to lean toward book writing, writing his memoirs. He’s an intellectual who has had good success with two books and probably will have good success with future books.” In just 2009, Obama earned $5.1 million from those two books, “The Audacity of Hope,” and “Dreams From My Father.” The New York Times estimated that Obama and his wife, Michelle, could earn anywhere from $20 million to $45 million from future book contracts. And Obama said in his farewell news conference that he would like to write after leaving office. It worked for Ulysses S. Grant. The former president secured his family’s financial future when the Civil War hero finished his memoirs while suffering from terminal throat cancer. The Obamas are already wealthy. One report a year ago pegged the president’s net worth at $12.2 million. That and his pension should keep him comfortable as he rents a home in Washington’s upscale Kalorama neighborhood for $22,000 a month. Obama, an avid golfer, is also reportedly noodling around for a home in Rancho Mirage, where golf is akin to a religion. Obama could go back to teaching. He was a lecturer at the University of Chicago Law School for 12 years before he was elected to the U.S. Senate. The Harvard Law School graduate could return to Chicago, where the Obamas own a $1.5 million home, or teach in Washington, or at Columbia University in New York, where he studied as an undergraduate.)

AMERICAN THINKER
— An idea for $60 billion per year in federal savings – Bob Fitzhenry  (DIERSEN: Does Fitzhenry approve or disapprove of the federal government’s wasting my career and forcing me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old?  Democrats and Democrat plants, Libertarians and Libertarian plants, Greens and Green plants, and RINOs HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH the federal government’s wasting my career and forcing me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old.)
http://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2017/01/an_idea_60_billion_per_year_in_federal_savings.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: I dusted off an old idea of mine because of President Trump’s freeze on federal hiring, his tasking to create an attrition plan, and a statistic I read yesterday in a Washington Post article by Juliet Eilperin.  Eilperin reported that in the federal workforce, “there are nearly three times as many employees over age 60 as under age 30.”  Yikes.  That’s no way to run a railroad. The idea I’d roughed out gave a way to cut back the federal workforce by tempting people to retire or move on earlier than they would otherwise.  Depending on whom I’d run the idea past, I’d hear that it’s fantasy, fantastic, or the best sense of fantastical. The cliché to address what I’d like to see happen is, “You’ve got to spend money to make money.”  What if we spent a bunch of money offering departure incentives high enough to entice 750,000 feds to resign or retire?  Then, how about filling one third of the vacated positions with veterans, graduates, and the un- and underemployed?  We’d be spending billions to save billions more every year, and to get 250,000 people into careers they and the country need them to have.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: People in the private sector do not take an oath of office when they get a job. They get an offer, report to work, and that’s it. For federal employees it is different. Reading so many articles about the inauguration that refer to the president-elect taking the oath of office on the 20th of January got me thinking about oaths and what they mean. I have taken that oath of office as a civil service employee. Raising your right hand and swearing to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States” is not something most people take lightly. It is a solemn oath and it means something to most people who take it.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Smoking will cost you big time in Illinois.  The habit will cost a smoker an estimated nearly $1.8 million throughout his or her lifetime, making Illinois among the costliest states in the nation for users, according to a new study. The study from WalletHub looked at the out-of-pocket cost to smokers as well as financial opportunity cost (how much money smokers would have made by investing money instead of spending it on cigarettes), healthcare cost, income loss per smoke and other expenses. The study found smoking in Illinois will end up costing people more than $34,000 a year or $1.77 million over a lifetime of smoking for about 50 years. For a pack-a-day smoker, the habit can cost more than $2,700 per year just to buy cigarettes, the study found.)

— Wheaton City Council approves facility for single moms at former Wheaton Inn  Facility to serve as many as 12 new and expectant single mothers – ERIC SCHELKOPF
http://www.mysuburbanlife.com/2017/01/18/wheaton-city-council-approves-facility-for-single-moms-at-former-wheaton-inn/a5r6lc4/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Wheaton City Council on Jan. 17 voted 6-0 to approve plans for the former Wheaton Inn building at 301 W. Roosevelt Road to become a facility for new and expectant single mothers. The Clarendon Hills-based company Love From Above plans to offer a two-year transitional housing program for women 18 to 26 years old that will serve single mothers in DuPage County. The facility would serve as many as 12 women at any given time who find themselves in “crisis pregnancies,” Love From Above President and founder Yvonne Florczak-Seeman previously said. City Council members approved the plans contingent on the installation of landscaping for the property and the replacement of any required landscaping that has died or is dying. In addition, the facility will only be able to serve a maximum of 12 women at any given time. While Wheaton Mayor Michael Gresk said he would have preferred to have seen a commercial use for the building, “it’s good to see that building occupied.” “It’s an appropriate use,” he said. Council members previously asked if the facility would have to be licensed or regulated by the state. Greg Dose, attorney for the applicant, wrote a letter to the city stating the facility is not subject to regulation or licensing by the Department of Children and Family Services under the Illinois Child Care Act. In the letter, Dose said the facility will be the primary residence of the women. “While they reside there, it will be their home and the home of their infant and toddler children,” Dose said in the letter. “There will be no children on the premises other than those of the moms. Thus all child care that occurs on the premises will be home-based child care.” Dose said the facility is exempt from DCFS licensing and regulation because the children will not be apart from their parents. Wheaton’s city attorney has agreed with Dose’s opinion. As proposed, the women staying at the facility would have to be enrolled in college to participate in the program. This would be the company’s first facility, which will be called The Butterfly Garden…A Place for Healing and Transformation. The Wheaton Inn originally was built in 1987 and most recently was used as office space by an investment company that relocated to Downers Grove a few years ago. Council member Suzanne Fitch was absent from the meeting.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Trump attacks Lewis as, “All talk, talk, talk — no action”; Lewis, who repeatedly thrust his body unto the breach for justice, who was arrested, beaten and terrorized, including during the time that young Trump was at his well-heeled schools, receiving draft deferments from the Vietnam War. In fact, one of Trump’s five deferments was in 1965, the same year as the Selma marches and “Bloody Sunday,” during which Lewis was struck so violently by a state trooper wielding a billy club that Lewis’s skull was fractured. Coincidentally, Trump finally received his permanent exemption from the draft, a 4-F status, in the year before he and his father were sued by the Department of Justice for violating the Fair Housing Act of 1968 — one of the many justice issues Lewis championed. As The New York Times noted at the time: “The government contended that Trump Management had refused to rent or negotiate rentals ‘because of race and color.’ It also charged that the company had required different rental terms and conditions because of race and that it had misrepresented to blacks that apartments were not available.” Let’s be clear: Donald Trump doesn’t even deserve to stand in John Lewis’s shadow. The spectacular obscenity of Trump’s comment is incomparable and deeply repulsive.)

http://www.wsj.com/articles/china-tightens-apps-oversight-1484568024
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Plugging a gap in the Great Firewall, China on Monday began requiring internet app stores to register with the state. China has long censored websites, barring outlawed content such as pornography, the promotion of illegal activity including terrorism and “rumors,” a term regulators often apply to antigovernment statements. But apps create a special challenge for government censors, experts say, because they often incorporate a wide variety of functions and serve as platforms for users to exchange information, making them harder to oversee. They are also multiplying quickly.)

— Pulling Retirement Cash, but Not by Choice  Baby boomers’ mandatory withdrawals from 401(k)s, IRAs and other tax-deferred retirement accounts start in full force this year, touching off a massive shift of cash – VIPAL MONGA and SARAH KROUSE  (DIERSEN: The cost of living in Wheaton is very high.  Because my Democrat superiors in the federal government wasted my career and forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, my Civil Service Retirement System pension is dramatically reduced.  Because of that, increasingly, my wife and I are spending more than our income. When I am 70 1/2, we will use my required minimum distribution to help pay for things like real estate taxes, income taxes, medical expenses, food, utilities, and insurance.)
http://www.wsj.com/articles/pulling-retirement-cash-but-not-by-choice-1484568043
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The largest generation in U.S. history has to start pulling its retirement money this year, kicking off a mandatory movement of cash that could total hundreds of billions in the coming decades. U.S. law requires anyone age 70 ½ or older to begin annual withdrawals from their tax-sheltered retirement accounts and pay taxes on those distributions. The oldest of the nation’s 75 million baby boomers cross that threshold for the first time this month, according to a U.S. Census Bureau estimate of when that demographic group began. The obligatory outflows from 401(k)s and IRAs are expected to ripple through the U.S. economy, the stock market and a money-management industry that relies heavily on fees from boomers’ tax-sheltered savings plans and assets. Boomers hold roughly $10 trillion in tax-deferred savings accounts, according to an estimate by Edward Shane, a managing director at Bank of New York Mellon Corp. Over the next two decades, the number of people age 70 or older is expected to nearly double to 60 million—roughly the population of Italy. Firms that manage 401(k) plans are trying to persuade clients to reinvest their withdrawals in other products rather than spending or donating the cash to charity. It’s another pain point for many traditional money managers already struggling to keep some clients from shifting into lower-cost index-tracking mutual funds.)

But instead of making it effective when a new session begins Wednesday, Durkin named Breen and Wheeler to the posts for Monday and Tuesday, the final two days of the 99th General Assembly. (FROM THE ARTICLE: For the past 13 years the Western Avenue Community Center in Bloomington has brought people together to celebrate Dia De Los Reyes, “Kings Day” The event has been a family favorite for years,  it wasn’t just the singing and dancing that brought  people in this year, Lieutenant Governor Evelyn Sanguinetti  made a special appearance. “There are a lot of families, that come from the same background that I come from, my mother is a refugee from Cuba, and my dad is from Ecuador, and they came here so I could study, and live the American dream” Sanguinetti said. Born in Miami, Sanguenetti shared stories about how she grew up in  poverty, overcoming those early challenges to go on and become the first latina lieutenant Governor in the nation. “We need to fight for that environment so they can live that dream, right here in Illinois, so that they can stay here, because they find opportunity here.” Hispanic women make up less than one percent of elected officials in the United States.  For people at the community center, letting the kids hear her message that they too could overcome the odds, was empowering. “I invited those kids to Springfield and my office in Chicago; I told them they too could be the next Governor and Lt.  Governor… there’s no limit.”)

http://www.wsiltv.com/story/34209978/atlanta-viola-davis-ryan-gosling-take-early-globes
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The sunny musical “La Land” may have danced its way to a Golden Globes record Sunday night, but the film’s seven accolades were a mere sideshow to the eloquence of honoree Meryl Streep, whose speech encapsulated the evening’s prevailing themes of hope, inclusivity and action over anger about the imminent presidency of Donald Trump. “You and all of us in this room really belong to the most vilified segments in American society right now,” Streep said. “Think about it, Hollywood, foreigners, and the press.” Without even mentioning Trump by name, Streep, in accepting the year’s Cecil B. DeMille Award, eviscerated the President-elect’s use of his power and rank in the mocking of a disabled New York Times reporter on the campaign trail this year. “When the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose,” Streep said, imploring those in the room to remember “the privilege and the responsibility of the act of empathy” and also the vital role of the press in holding “power to account.” On Twitter early Monday, Trump again denied mocking the reporter and took shots of his own at Streep, calling her “one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood” and “a Hillary flunky who lost big.” Streep’s speech was the kind of show-stopping moment that could make an audience forget that they’re watching what is generally a booze-soaked, star-studded party of irreverence and a few inevitable left-field winners in the annual Awards season stop on the way to the Oscars. The only true shocker there was Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s supporting actor win for his performance in Tom Ford’s “Nocturnal Animals” over favorites Mahershala Ali from “Moonlight” and Jeff Bridges from “Hell or High Water.”)

http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/holman-rule-will-help-improve-civil-service/article/2611231
(FROM THE EDITORIAL: As part of its broader package of rules for the 115th Congress, the House of Representatives revived the Holman Rule, a provision that allows House members to propose amendments to spending bills that closely manage federal agencies. These “retrenchment” amendments can affect details down to individual federal salaries and the number of staff in an office. This rule allows Congress not only to eliminate entire programs (although it can do this already) but also to reassign or eliminate federal employees, individually or in groups. News that the Holman Rule was to be revived was greeted with pearl-clutching panic by such left-liberal news organizations as the Washington Post, which colorfully opined that the move “threatens to upend the 130-year-old civil service.” Others even asserted that Congress firing a federal employee would amount to an unconstitutional bill of attainder. This is ridiculous. The restoration of the Holman Rule means merely that when it comes to firing a federal employee, the president’s signature on an act of Congress can do it. It doesn’t seem extraordinary that the heads of the federal government should be able to dismiss their staff. Up to now, firing even the worst federal bureaucrat has been very, very difficult, so difficult that voters no longer control the agencies they employ and that govern their lives. Rep. Morgan Griffith, R-Va., whose idea it was to bring back the rule, put it succinctly when he asked, “Who runs this country, the people of the United States or the people on the people’s payroll?”  Given that the rule requires an act of Congress, it will be invoked only to deal with the most egregious cases. But there is an abundance of cases in which the bureaucracy and arbitrators cover up for their colleagues. Take Elizabeth Rivera of Puerto Rico, for example, who was restored to her job at the Department of Veterans Affairs after pleading guilty to involvement in an armed robbery. Her union not only thwarted managers’ attempts to fire her, but even successfully won back pay for the period when she had been off the job. As part of its argument for her reinstatement, officials of the American Federation of Government Employees pointed out that her manager at the agency is also a convicted sex offender. Of course, federal employees don’t have to go so far as to participate in violent or sexual crimes to diminish the reputation of the government. Internal Revenue Service employees who deleted Lois Lerner’s emails when they were under congressional subpoena were not fired. Aside from a few scapegoats, the VA employees who systematically manipulated the agency’s computer system at more than 100 facilities, harming veterans to win themselves performance bonuses, were not fired. Two VA managers who stole hundreds of thousands of dollars from their agency could not be fired. Nor could many of those implicated in the notorious scandal involving a General Services Administration conference in Las Vegas in 2010. Bad-penny federal employees are nothing new. But the multiplicity of recent examples helps demonstrate the larger point. The civil service is superior to the spoils system, by which top-to-bottom political hires once dominated the federal government in the 19th century. But there is a balance between the benefits and drawbacks of civil service protections, and at the moment the scales have tipped too far in one direction. It’s time someone helped federal employees by instilling in them the same healthy fear of losing their job that everyone in the private sector experiences. The Holman Rule or something like it is needed to restore public confidence, both in government and in the civil service. We hope Congress does not hesitate to exercise this power. It will send a clear message to those abusing a near-absolute protection that federal employment was never meant to confer.)

I graduated debt-free from NIU in 1970 and owning a 1969 Dodge Charger SE.  I lived with my mother and bother in Crete and helped pay the bills 1970-1972 because my father had died suddenly in 1969. During that time, I worked for the Firestone Store in Chicago Heights full-time 1970-1971 and part-time 1971-1972 and for IRS starting in June of 1971, in Chicago during 1971, and in Harvey during 1972.  I started taking graduate business courses in the evening at Loyola at the start 1972.  I bought a new town home in University Park in September of 1972.)
http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/study-explores-link-college-debt-boomerang-effect-44635031
(FROM THE ARTICLE: While both college debt and the “boomerang” phenomenon are growing, a new study casts doubt on the notion that staggering student loans are driving young adults back to their parents’ doorsteps. In the past decade, student debt has doubled, with the average 2015 college graduate owing $30,000. The rate at which young adults “boomerang” also is increasing — recent studies report that between 20 and 50 percent are returning home. Many assume the former causes the latter, but Jason Houle and Cody Warner — assistant sociology professors at Dartmouth College and Montana State University, respectively — found the opposite. Their study, published Thursday in Sociology of Education and based on annual surveys of more than 5,000 people born between 1980 and 1984, found that so-called boomerangers had less student loan debt than young adults who didn’t return home.)

http://www.heraldnet.com/opinion/milbank-ehtics-schmethics-just-blame-the-media/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Here we go, down the rabbit hole. Donald Trump won the presidency by feeding Americans a diet of falsehoods and fake news, and, when challenged, he lashed out: shouting down the opposition, bullying the accuser and, particularly, blaming the media. It was inevitable that his success would bring imitators. Now they have arrived, and they’re breeding like, well … Consider Duncan Hunter, a young Republican from California, co-chairman of the Trump caucus in the House and one of the first members of Congress to endorse Trump. This week he disclosed that he used $600 worth of campaign funds to take his children’s pet bunny on a commercial airplane. Using campaign funds for personal expenses is illegal, and this “mistake” is the latest personal expense for which Hunter, under scrutiny, has reimbursed his campaign account $62,000. Among his reported campaign expenditures: $1,400 to a dentist, $1,400 for his children’s private-school lunch deliveries, $1,650 for their tuition, $961 at SeaWorld, $434 to Dick’s Sporting Goods, $229 at Disneyland, $217 to an Italian jewelry store, $361 to a surf shop, $1,200 for a garage door, $2,892 to an Arizona resort, $2,000 for a Thanksgiving trip to Italy and $1,302 worth of video games. Similar abuses of campaign funds landed former representative Jesse Jackson Jr., D-Illinois, in prison and prompted the resignation of Rep. Rob Andrews, D-New Jersey. The Federal Election Commission and the House ethics committee (acting on findings of the Office of Congressional Ethics, which House Republicans this week attempted to eliminate) are examining Hunter’s spending.)

BALTIMORE SUN
— The Democrats are down and out and don’t seem to know it – Perry L. Weed  (DIERSEN: Who LOOKS DOWN down on you? I should write a book about those activists, candidates, elected officials, party leaders, major donors, political consultants, etc. in my precinct, in Wheaton’s West District, in Wheaton, in Glen Ellyn, in Milton Township, in DuPage County, and in Illinois WHO LOOK DOWN ON ME.  I could group them as follows: those who a) have lots of religious clout, b) those who have lots of government clout, c) those who have lots of political clout, d) those who have lots of financial clout, e) those who I have sued, f) operatives for the aforesaid, and g) dupes for the aforesaid.)
http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/opinion/oped/bs-ed-democrats-denial-20170104-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Democrats have lost their way. They no longer represent the working class or the middle class as they continue to fall behind. They have lost America’s heartland and small towns and rural areas. Look at the political power shift to the right. The Democrats have 12 fewer U.S. senators than when President Barack Obama was sworn in, 63 fewer House members and 16 fewer governors. They have the lowest number of state legislators in more than 100 years. In only six states do Democrats control both the governorship and the legislature — the lowest number in our history. Other than President Obama, Democrats have a severe messaging problem and a dearth of winning candidates; the party is a fundamental mess. Most importantly, Democrats have forgotten their roots in the economic goals of the Roosevelt New Deal and the Johnson Great Society. They have abandoned an inclusive message. They slice and dice the electorate. They are now the party of diversity, and ethnic- and racial- and gender- identity. They advocate cultural issues at the expense of jobs and other working class issues. Too many of them they look down on “the deplorables” and the poorly educated, the very ones who turned to Donald Trump for change and some glimmer of hope for themselves. This election revealed the emergence of white and other working class Americans who feel abandoned and threatened by Washington and Wall Street and the institutions and elites they represent. Some of this was nativism, e.g., a reaction to the persistent flow of illegal immigrants into the country, now augmented by new refugees from the Middle East. These white Americans feel their very identity is under attack.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Millions of people are still in shock over the election to the Presidency of someone with such questionable qualifications as Donald Trump, who seems intent on rolling back many of the governmental programs vital to the lives of ordinary people. For the good of the nation and their party, to come back, Democrats need to get beyond simple opposition, to proposing the improved programs and services the people need. And they must communicate better with ordinary Americans, especially in what pundits call “flyover land,” outside the coastal areas and big cities, to go forward from this defeat. . .It’s counterproductive to look down on people who voted Republican. Given the Democrats’ communication disadvantage, it’s not surprising that people voted to “make America great again”—for themselves—over candidates who seemed to promise little, except when pressured by Bernie’s supporters. Democrats have a history of losing when they don’t communicate a strong economic message. They need to go on the offensive—as in ’92 when “It’s the economy stupid” was the successful working slogan and strategy.)

Duckworth raises questions about Trump’s Pentagon nominee – Chuck Raasch  (DIERSEN: If you were asked what experience do you have to raise questions about government decisions and/or about government activities, what would you say? For almost 9 of those years, I worked on audits of federal financial industry regulators; for almost 6 years, on audits of many other federal agencies; and for 3 years, on audits of IRS.  I worked for IRS for almost 9 years, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels, currently $77,899-$88,286. CAPITOL FAX
— Do the Democrats need a self-funder for 2018?  (DIERSEN: How much money do you have, that is, what is your income and what is your net worth?  All my critics/opponents have lots of money. Therefore, as you would expect, their operatives and their dupes hint/imply/argue/shout that the more money that you have, the more credible that you are.  For example, on a scale of 1 to 5, your credibility is 1 if your net worth is more than $10 million, 2 if it is more than $20 million, 3 if it is more than $40 million, 4 if it is more than $80 million, and 5 if it is more than $160 million.)
