Led by the anti-police group “NU Community Not Cops,” students tore down a sign that read “We’re N This Together,” burned it, and placed the charred remains of the sign at the feet of police officers guarding the home of Northwestern president Morton Schapiro. They also vandalized the school’s iconic Weber Arch, during a protest purportedly aimed at abolishing the campus police department. Pictures taken by NU Community Not Cops document the destruction, which according to Northwestern’s student newspaper began at 11:51 p.m. on Saturday. Outside of the Northwestern University police department, students wrote “abolition is the solution” and “Black Lives Matter.” Written on a university sign were the letters “ACAB,” which stands for All Cops Are Bastards. Other graffiti included the words “F— UCPD,” in reference to the nearby University of Chicago police department. Following the death of George Floyd, Schapiro penned a letter to the Northwestern student body in which he committed to “reviewing the operations of Northwestern’s police department.” “We will reexamine all of NUPD’s approaches and function, including its use of force policy … its bias-free policing policy,” and “reinforce annual training on de-escalation,” Schapiro said. But students around the country have gone further, protesting the very existence of campus police departments. At the University of Pennsylvania, students and professors called on the school to disarm police officers and eliminate the university’s crime alert system. Johns Hopkins University announced it would delay the development of a campus police department for at least two years in the wake of student protests. And when the University of Chicago refused to defund its police department, students vowed to protest the decision for at least a year. Big Tech is now starting to label regular conservative viewpoints as false and using that as justification to censor and even permanently ban us. They are threatening to ban conservatives for posting things that left-leaning fact checkers say have a very remote possibility of not being true. . .Do you see where this is leading? If you say “capitalism leads to prosperity,” that could be “fact-checked” as false because you can always point to poor people. If you say “Christianity saves lives” that could be “fact-checked” as false because some Christians were martyred for their faith. . .Rep. Jim Jordan and other congressional conservatives issued a report this month on Big Tech censorship, focusing on Facebook, Google, Apple, Amazon and Twitter. The report stated, “Big Tech is out to get conservatives. Time and again, Big Tech uses its power to suppress and marginalize conservative voices.” Google was caught blacklisting some of the top conservative media sites in July, noticeably shortly before the election. Notice we’re no longer talking about Infowars and fringe sites. These are the top conservative sites in the country, including Townhall, Breitbart, The Daily Wire and Judicial Watch. . .Jordan and Rep. Matt Gaetz were shadow-banned by Twitter in 2018, but not a single member of the 78-person Progressive Caucus was shadow-banned. RNC chair Ronna McDaniel was shadow-banned, but not the DNC chair. The report lists many incidents of censorship of prominent, regular conservatives, including President Trump. On the other hand, conduct threatening violence on the extreme left is often given a free pass. Tweets by the Ayatollah Khamenei are allowed stating that Iran will reciprocate against the U.S. for the death of Hajj Qasem Soleimani and that Israel will be uprooted and destroyed. . .Many conservatives will still blow this off, saying it’s not censorship because private companies are involved, and we just need to come up with our own competing alternatives. This may be true, but it’s not solving the problem. No platforms fair to conservatives have come anywhere near the competitiveness of the top Big Tech companies. Parler, which President Trump recommended as a social media alternative, has only 2.8 million users. Whereas Facebook has over 2.7 billion users, Instagram has 1 billion and Twitter has 48.35 million. So conservatives are being increasingly shut out of the modern-day version of the public square. . .Something has to change. The left already controls so much of society — education, most of the legal system, traditional media, Hollywood — that the addition of Big Tech will ensure that conservatives never win another election again. It’s just not clear to many of us what is the best way to fight back.)

Despite such demand, the numbers within the profession remain unbalanced. Yes, women have come to represent more than 50 percent of accounting graduates over the last 20 years, and over the past 10, the percentages of accounting undergraduates and graduates who are minorities have also increased. In fact, aTrends report shows that 42 percent of accounting graduates are African-American, Hispanic, American Indian, Asian or Pacific Islander, multiethnic, or other. However, total minority hiring in the world of American CPAs has remained inexcusably low, and that must change so as to better serve both the workforce and its customers. The U.S. Census of 2010 predicted that minorities will be the majority by 2042 — that’s about two decades away from now — and communities and clients are shifting in their demographic makeup to reflect that. Moreover, the combined purchasing power of African-Americans, Hispanics, and Asians was at $4 trillion in 2018 according to the Selig Center for Economic Growth, and demographers predict that the growth of minority populations will contribute between 44-70 percent to the total growth of U.S. purchasing power from 2000 to 2045. Still, this isn’t groundbreaking news, and diversity initiatives have been nudging accounting departments and firms for years to sit up and notice that the United States is more of a melting pot than ever before. But the need for CPA firms to bolster diversity and inclusion — and to provide not just a seat at the table, but also a voice — has never been as critical or urgent as it is today. Because despite America being increasingly diverse, minority workers are still likelier than whites to be unemployed or declined a promotion or senior position. In 2016, Pew Research published that 40 percent of both men and women were more likely to hire men over women; in 2018, almost 90 percent of corporate executives were white and roughly 73 percent were male, and just three Fortune 500 companies in the country were headed by an African-American as CEO. Not much has changed since then, so it seems that while the world around the accounting profession is rapidly changing, the world within it is not.)
