(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Madison County Board has approved a new precinct map that reduces the number of precincts to 191 from the current 225. The board took the action after new state laws were signed in mid-November by Gov. J.B. Pritzker. The changes were approved at a special Madison County Board meeting Thursday night. The new map was approved unanimously 21-0, with seven members absent, two participating remotely and one open seat. The changes are the last to be completed as part of the decennial census. In November the board approved a new Madison County Board district map cutting the board size by three to 26 members. “Reducing the total number of election precincts by consolidating 225 into 191 will save taxpayers 15 percent on every election held in Madison County,” said Madison County Board Member Chris Guy, R-Maryville, who chairs the Government Relations Committee. “Not only will a reduction result in cost-savings to the taxpayers, a reduction will also bring more efficiency and integrity to the election process.” The new law requires precincts to be “as near as may be practicable, 1,200 registered voters,” according to information provided by Guy. Prior to that the number was 500 registered voters per precinct.
