As we all know, Wheaton’s Independence Day Parades have always been very important. DuPage County has more residents than six states and Wheaton is its County Seat. Bob Dole walked in the parade in 1996. The Obamas walked in the parade in 2004. Many U.S. Senators, U.S. Representatives, Illinois statewide officials, Illinois Senators, Illinois Representatives, DuPage countywide officials, DuPage County District officials, judges, and justices have walked in the parades.

Since 2005, DuPage Republicans have helped sponsor Wheaton’s Independence Day Parades. For many years, DuPage Republicans have been the parade’s top sponsor by contributing $2,500 with $1,200 earmarked for the combined Wheaton North and Wheaton-Warrenville South Bands and $1,000 earmarked for bagpipers. I have had the honor of raising those contributions from Republican candidates, Republican elected officials, and Republican party leaders. In 2007, I raised an additional $2,000 from Republicans for an elephant to walk behind Peter Roskam in the parade.

But yesterday, Wheaton Park District Superintendent of Marketing & Special Events Amy Seklecki advised me by phone that for this year’s parade, parade sponsorships will not be allowed. I told her that I would appeal that decision.

For many years, Wheaton has given the Wheaton Park District $30,000 a year with $20,000 earmarked for fireworks and $10,000 earmarked for parade entries. I certainly hope that the Illinois Republican Party, DuPage County Republican Central Committee, and Milton Township Republican Organization are encouraging all the candidates who will be on 2022 Republican primary ballots in DuPage County, Milton Township, and especially Wheaton a) to have an entry in Wheaton’s 2021 Independence Day Parade and b) help sponsor the parade. This is especially true for Republican candidates for U.S. Senator, U.S. Representative, Illinois statewide offices, Illinois Senator, Illinois Representative, DuPage countywide offices, DuPage district offices, and judicial races.

Republican entries in Wheaton’s outstanding 2019 Independence Day Parade were Bob Berlin, Amy Grant, Chris Kachiroubas, Evelyn Sanguinetti, Ann Celine Walsh, and Milton Township Republican Central Committee. Those who walked with the entries included Almiron, Anderson, Carlson, Caruso, Colgan, Collins, Falbo, Fisher, Furstenau, Ives, Keller, LeVan, Marquardt, Marshall, Monino, Muehlfelt, Nathwani, Ruhl, Ryan, Saake, Shaw, and Whelan. With their $2,500 contribution, “DuPage County Republicans” were again the top sponsor for the parade and fireworks. Contributions were: $500 from Roger Claar; $250 each from Berlin, Sanguinetti, Phil Suess, and Tim Whelan; and $100 each from Michael Barbier, Grant Eckhoff, Tim Elliott, Grant, Chris Heidorn, Babette Holder, Jeanne Ives, Marty Keller, Bob Larsen, and Walsh. I hand-delivering 500 flyers (printed courtesy of Alpha Graphics) to the residences and businesses on the parade route that included the Republican entries in the parade, the sponsor’s names, and the amounts they contributed.

Again, please allow DuPage Republicans to help sponsor Wheaton’s 2021 Independence Day Parade.

I responded to Mr. Benard and all the aforesaid leaders with the following: “Needless-to-say, your new Wheaton Independence Day parade policy statement is a complete and dramatic reversal of Wheaton Independence Day parade policy that has been in place since at least 2005. Needless-to-say, any such complete and dramatic Wheaton Independence Day parade policy reversal would have to  be voted on and passed by the Wheaton City Council before it could be implemented.” – Dave Diersen
