(FROM THE ARTICLE: In preparation for what could be the most contested Thornton Township election in recent history, major political parties will each hold a caucus Tuesday, Dec. 3, to select candidates for supervisor, clerk, assessor, highway commissioner, and four trustee seats. Voters will go to the polls on April 1, 2025, to make their selections in the Consolidated Election, and the caucuses determine which candidates they will see on their ballots. A source familiar with Thornton Township politics said these are the first caucuses held in many years. . .Residents of Thornton Township may participate in either the Democratic or Republican Party caucuses, nominating a candidate and voting on their party’s nominees. By participating in the caucus, a resident is becoming affiliated with that political party. Caucus proceedings  When entering the caucus room, participants will be asked to sign an affidavit stating they are registered to vote in Thornton Township and are affiliated with the established political party conducting the caucus — that they are a registered Democrat or registered Republican. The chair of the proceedings will call the caucus to order. They will introduce the caucus judges of election and announce the offices for which nominees will be selected. Then the chair calls for nominations, which can come from anyone in the caucus. The procedure continues until there are no more nominations. Participants then vote on their preferred nominees. The highest vote-getters in each race are selected as the nominee. Independent and other candidates  Candidates running under non-major political parties have already filed their candidacy for Thornton Township, and do not participate in the caucus process. Four Independent Party candidates are looking to unseat Henyard: Nate Fields Jr., LaShunte’ Lollis-Walton, Stafford Owens, and Sidney Moore. Harvey Mayor Chris Clark is also a candidate for supervisor, leading a Reform Thornton Township Party ticket that includes four candidates for trustee: Harvey city administrator Corean Davis, Harvey fifth ward alderperson Dominique Randle-El, Rachel Jones, and Jacinta J.
