(FROM THE ARTICLE: Ten months after the launch of Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency, one thing is clear: no one can agree on how much money it saved—or, in fact, whether it saved any money at all—and, if there were savings, what happened to them. What if DOGE were done right? Here something else is clear: we have had the Government Accountability Office, founded as a green-eye-shade operation back in 1921 to audit every single government transaction. It’s grown into the indispensable watchdog on the federal government’s spending and operations. It’s what DOGE done right looks like. At first, Musk promised to find $2 trillion in savings. Then the pledge dropped to $1 trillion. Then he struggled to document any savings at all. Since 2002, GAO’s work has logged more than $1.45 trillion in savings for taxpayers, across more than 29,000 different federal operations. Last year, savings were $67.5 billion. And better than most watchdogs glad to gobble up every available can of dog food, GAO has kept watch on itself. It’s measured the return on taxpayer investment in its own operations: $123 for every budget dollar. It’s operations aren’t flashy. In fact, they’re pretty wonky, which as card-carrying wonks we greatly admire. Its staff get advanced training when they walk into the door, which never stops as employees move up through the ranks. The size of its staff, which was reduced from 5,200 staff to its current level of about 3,500 after the Republican takeover of the House in 1995, has been relatively stable over the last decade, despite expanding demands on its work. Musk promised to trim the number of federal agencies. “There’s so many that people have never heard of. I think we should be able to get away with 99 agencies,” he said. It wasn’t clear where that number came from. It was clear from his work that DOGE didn’t know how to get there. GAO, on the other hand, has been identifying areas of duplication and overlap since 2011, with $725 billion in savings in this area alone. As others were struggling to come up with solid savings, GAO in May issued a 154-page report detailing just how to do more. Musk brought in IT whiz kids to comb through the federal government’s information services, but they had little to show for it except putting the security of Americans’ personal information at risk. GAO, in contrast, laid out a plan for figuring out how to save money on IT. Better proof-of-concept work in space-based laser communications could save hundreds of million dollars—and the government could pick up $157 billion by better managing the payment rates in Medicare. In a February Oval Office meeting, Musk claimed the federal government was full of officials who had approved money for “fraudsters,” but that claim turned out to be little more than arm-waving. GAO, in contrast, has since 1990 prepared a report every two years on programs prone to waste, fraud, abuse and mismanagement. Its latest report, in February 2025, identified 38 areas needing special attention. This “high-risk list” bears careful reading for anyone who really cares about getting into the guts of the problem. It identifies issues ranging from contract management in the Pentagon to money leaking out of federal disability programs to management of oil and gas leases to mega-challenges inside the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s disaster assistance. Even a casual look of the report—all 323 pages of it—would convince any reader that it’s a road map for which stones to unturn to get at the unholy trinity of waste, fraud and abuse. But there’s more here. GAO keeps score so we can see who’s making progress—and who isn’t. In 10 areas, federal agencies made $84 billion in progress. Three slipped backwards—acquisition of weapons systems by the Pentagon, improving IT management throughout the government and managing the federal government’s property. And even more. GAO doesn’t operate like a sheriff riding into town promising to clean up the saloons. It has developed a big-picture look at federal operations and identified leading practices that federal agencies can pick up. Like any oversight body, federal agencies don’t always like what they hear and often squawk. But there’s no question that we—and even they—are a whole lot better off for GAO’s work. GAO is relatively little known outside government. Even less well known is the fact that it’s an agency that works for Congress. That often is a thorn in the side of the administration, regardless of who’s in power, because GAO often says things the administration would rather not hear. That’s especially been the case in recent months with GAO’s findings that the administration has violated the law in impounding federal money—refusing to spend money that Congress appropriated. This was at the root of Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought’s statement that GAO “shouldn’t exist”. The OMB Director doesn’t want anyone looking over their shoulder, just as students don’t like to take home report cards that aren’t straight-A’s or spend their time in detention. But now that we’re closing in on the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and celebrating the Constitution that the founders crafted to govern us, we need to strengthen the balance-of-powers model that Madison and the other founders left us. They deliberately chose not to give us an easy system to use in governing ourselves. That means the three branches of government are always going to be jousting with each other—and that’s how it should be. In the growing complexity of our society, we need governmental institutions that can keep up with that complexity. That means Congress, in turn, needs muscle to do the heavy lifting required to oversee the executive branch, whether it’s a Republican or Democratic Congress, or a Republican or Democratic President. That’s what Washington, Madison, Jefferson, Hamilton and the other founders had in mind. And that’s why the next month is so important. The current head of GAO, Comptroller General Gene Dodaro, will be at the end of his fifteen-year term, the longest term in the federal government except for the lifetime appointment of federal judges, and the process to name a successor will shift into high gear. A special commission—consisting of congressional leaders—recommends a slate of individuals to the president. The president selects one person to nominate, and the Senate must then confirm the new head. This appointment is a pretty big deal. It will ensure strong oversight through the 2030s into the 2040s and reinforce the balance of powers for even longer. GAO will provide the executive branch with the independent insights it needs to wring out waste, fraud and abuse. It is a tool that Congress can use to hold the executive branch accountable, essential because a weak GAO weakens the legislative branch. We all have a stake in making sure that GAO can provide the oversight the Constitution requires—and the balance of powers that they designed.)

None of them came close to justifying the many adverse actions that they took against me. They forced me to take a $23,472 (21%) pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980. They kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO. They delayed my promotions and never promoted me beyond GS-13. They always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance. They forced me to retire when I was 49 years old in 1997.

The fact that 8.5 million illegal immigrants have obtained work in the country is a result of employers paying workers under the table, unknowingly hiring workers who have committed document fraud, and hiring non-U.S. citizens whom the government authorizes to work temporarily. The largest number of illegal immigrants work in construction, followed by accommodation, food services, and manufacturing. Immigrants who are paid under the table are the most difficult for the federal government to track because they are often employed in person-to-person gigs. These include workers hired at home improvement stores or as house cleaners who offer their services on social media marketplaces, as well as businesses such as landscaping companies and restaurants. All employers in the U.S. are legally required to verify that new hires have completed an I-9 form, which requires the applicant’s Social Security number, proof of identity, and work authorization documentation. Select immigrants navigating immigration proceedings in court or who are temporarily protected from deportation may be issued a Social Security card for the purpose of working legally in the U.S., but this document does not confer U.S. citizenship or lawful presence. The Bipartisan Policy Center defended workers who are illegal immigrants and said many choose to file federal taxes on their own at the year’s end despite working off the books. In this case, workers without Social Security numbers use an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number issued by the IRS to report income and pay taxes on what they earn. “Many undocumented immigrants find ways to legally pay both federal income and payroll taxes even if they don’t have a Social Security number (which is normally required) and even if their income was earned by working illegally,” the BPC wrote in an analysis on illegal immigrants in the workplace. “Though there are many undocumented immigrants who are paid ‘under the table’ for their work and do not pay taxes on their income, many others do pay in the hope that it will someday help them become citizens,” the BPC analysis reads.)

I used the money I had earned doing that to buy a new 1966 Pontiac Tempest Sprint in May of 1966 that I used to get to/from summer jobs in 1966 and then classes at UIC. Then, the Park Forest Post Office hired me. With the money I earned working part-time during the school years and full-time during the summers, I paid for my college expenses, I bought a new 1968 Oldsmobile 442 in 1967, I bought a new 1969 Dodge Charger SE in 1968, and I graduated debt-free from NIU in 1970 owning that Charger.

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Serving in the U.S. Military is an option for every American through enlistment and in my opinion is a solid career path. Military service is also possible through the commission process if you have a college degree. This will set you up as an officer with higher pay rates and better leadership opportunities. Commission can be reached through a service academy, ROTC (Reserve Officers’ Training Corps), or an officer training/candidate school (OCS, OTS) with a college degree. People who are uncertain about life after college when enrolling in college or nearing graduation should consider serving in the military. (FROM THE ARTICLE: How did you prepare the big news of the week? There was much news. But let’s narrow it down to a few. The Jacobin leftist Zohran Mamdani’s political victory over the ashes of what had been the Democrat Party, propelled by the Angry White Women vote. The Angry White Women Leftists, often referred to as AWFLS, have appetite and a well developed sense of entitlement. Though they and their male partners are well educated in obscure subjects, they don’t have real financially marketable skills. They know DEI bureaucracy and DEI slogans, but they can’t fix a leaky toilet or repair an electric socket. They can’t earn an honest dollar so they reach for politics to take what they want. My friend the astute writer Michael Ledwith is also fascinated by these AWFLS, who provide anger, backbone and the necessary cruelty to what we are now experiencing as American Communism. They are what we call Karens. He sent me this passage from George Orwell’s “1984.” “It was always the women, and above all the young ones, who were the most bigoted adherents of the Party, the swallowers of slogans, the amateur spies and nosers-out of unorthodoxy.” It explains a lot, Ledwith said. And I think of AOC and her posse of AWFLS, searching for heretics, sharpening her knife, and I hope she doesn’t find them. Because they don’t have the money to live in New York at the standard they expect to live, they demand that Zohran give them “free stuff” and call it “affordability.” They feel betrayed by the establishment because they can no longer pay for what they desire. They want to live large as befits what they think is their station. And he’s promised to use other people’s money until that’s gone and the roof caves in, as it always does. And the other big news (to me, at least) are the revelations that Democrat Deep State prosecutorial zealot Jack Smith–the javert of the new left–had hoped to prosecute “the entire Republican political apparatus” for the crime of being conservative. How did we get here? As always the dried bones of political failure have lined this road over the decades: The failure of the political establishment is the foundation of the Mamdani rise. And what did the Democrat establishment offer in New York? A tired cynical Cuomo known for feeding grandmothers in nursing homes to the pandemic, and slapping fannies and otherwise sexually harassing young women. Democrats were as exhausted as he was. And they offered a charismatic figure in Mamdani, and if he orders them to the killing fields at some future date, he wasn’t a tired Democrat hack like Cuomo. The leftist Democrats who bowed to the radical communists like Mandami enjoy talking of diversity up until the moment they hang you for speaking your mind. I’m conservative. I really don’t think a trip to prison would change my mind about the leftists who have destroyed my hometown of Chicago and have now ruined New York. You might have watched panel discussion shows—those panels of experts and witty pundits with perfect teeth–selected to reflect your politics like so many of those bobble head dogs that people place in their cars. It is amusing to watch them cast about for consensus if one hasn’t yet been formed. But bobble heads—even pretty ones—don’t quite get you there. So how did I prepare for Mamdani, especially as Democrats worried about the angry left and the political guillotine of the leftists express no desire to end their shut-down of the federal government? Senator John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) said that Democrat fear of their own won’t allow them to reopen the government. “Because they’re afraid of facing the guillotine of the radical left. And who are the radical left? They are the people who would prefer to use taxpayer dollars to pay for health care for illegal immigrants than to pay for the men and women who keep us safe.” Guillotine, fear of the unleashed mob? I looked for my old copy of Edmund Burke’s “Reflections on the Revolution in France” It’s old. It’s affordable in paperback. It was written by a conservative. And I like it. But it has one serious drawback: It is a book. A book on paper, and this, by definition, takes effort to digest. It is not like sitting with the bobbleheads. But it does involve the Reign of Terror propelled by the Jacobin revolutionary Maximilien Robespierre. France spilled its own blood from September 1793 and into July 1794. In the Reign of Terror, some 17,000 French citizens were executed at the guillotine. Another 10,000 died in prison without trial. Among them were thousands of executed priests caught up in the Jacobin De-Christianization of France, as churches were shuttered and winemakers, shopkeepers, supporters of the king and queen were executed. Everyone and anyone could be suspected, and sent to the guillotine to the jeers of the filthy mob. It wasn’t Portland or Chicago, it was Paris. Family members accused each other as not being supportive enough of the revolution, terrified they would themselves be accused. And they were killed. And the guillotine kept falling again and again and again. For those who are afraid of reading, I leave this short video, narrated by a man with an English accent. Why? There’s nothing like an English accent to perpetuate a sense of historical authority. Fittingly, it even claimed Robespierre. Who reminds us of Robespierre today? I think of the Jacobin Democrats Adam Schiff, John Brennan of the CIA, or perhaps the imperious James Comey who destroyed the credibility of the FBI. You can see how frightened they are. Brennan is snarling the way a frightened dog snarls at the approach of a predator. At any event, the executions in France continued until finally, Napoleon became dictator of all of France and personally controlled the media and told the newspapers what to print. Now it’s New York Mayor Elect Zorhan Mamdani’s turn to play the Jacobin with his billionaire friends. His voters don’t read history. They have “feelings.” They are sentimental, emotional and thus easily manipulated, demanding “free stuff” and this leads to disaster. Soros has his meat puppet. He doesn’t need the clumsy barbarian in Chicago, Mayor Brandon Johnson. He’s already got Chicago, and much of the media. It’s not only Chicago and New York. The left is ascendant, full of confidence and oh so violent. The Democrat embrace of the assassination culture continued after the assassination of Christian activist Charlie Kirk. They marched in lock step in support of their candidate in Virginia who fantasized about murdering his opponents and killing the opponent’s children. It was Virginia Democrats who revenged themselves on Republican delegate Carrie Coyner, the Virginia Republican who revealed violent texts sent to her by Jay Jones. He expresses fantasies of murdering children and now is the chief law enforcement officer of the commonwealth that produced George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. Senior Virginia Democrats like Sen. Tim Kaine supported and embraced Jay Jones. The media, which has for decades protected leftist outrage, did its job. So how did we get here? As always, the establishment failed, and legitimate concerns about cost of living were ignored. And the Bolsheviks offered a charismatic leader with plenty of charm. And now they bathe in their feelings, and think about the great future ahead of them, as they reach for power over the rest of us. And you’re surprised that I would compare today’s American Democrats to the murderous Jacobins of 18th Century France? I don’t take guillotines to protests in American cities, but they do. In Chicago, New York, Portland, Los Angeles, every place where the Democrats feel strong. The rest of us? We pray for their reign of terror to end.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: On Tuesday, New Yorkers — by a slight majority, but a majority nonetheless — endorsed Zohran Mamdani and the proud, unrepentant form of socialism he champions as the answer to, as least as he presents it, all of their woes. “We will prove that there is no problem too large for government to solve, and no concern too small for it to care about,” Mamdani declared during his victory speech, an inversion of Ronald Reagan’s famous truism. At least some of the Big Apple’s lurch to the far left is attributable to the 34-year-old’s undeniable political talent. But there are greater, or — to be blunt — more sinister forces at work. Most insidious of all are two intertwined lies: that Americans today have it worse than their forebearers and that their wealthy peers bear the blame for their plight. Campaigning is the art of hearing people, and Mamdani heard New Yorkers better than anyone. They and their countrymen remain alarmed by the cost of living across a wide variety of goods and services: from housing, to groceries, to child care to transportation. These are real concerns that no voter should be ashamed of expressing and every politician worth their salt ought to devote their time and energy to alleviating. These justifiable feelings have been unjustly compounded, though, by progressives’ relentless demoralization campaign. Want to buy a house? Not in this economy, they say. Need health care? Good luck. Are you hopeful your kids will enjoy a better life than you did? They won’t. Never mind whether any of that is true, these claims are meant to discourage Americans into handing more power over to the government — and it’s working. Moreover, the treatment Mamdani and his comrades propose will make New Yorkers’ real problems worse. Instead of telling his soon-to-be constituents that they are the masters of their own lives — and trying to cultivate the necessary conditions for them to improve their lot — the mayor-elect’s message to his followers is that they have somehow been gipped. His celebration of his ticket to Gracie Mansion on Tuesday included denunciations of “bad landlords” and “billionaires,” as well the assertion, “For as long as we can remember, the working people of New York have been told by the wealthy and the well-connected that power does not belong in their hands.” Blame games It is tempting to buy into the blame game that Mamdani has turned into such a potent weapon. To some, it comes as a great relief to believe that every errant degree they’ve pursued, every frivolous dollar they’ve spent, indeed, every mistake they’ve ever made can be chalked up to some successful person or entity pulling a fast one over them. And to hear that it is someone else’s job to get them back on track. But then again, this message — disguised as it is by flowery language, a remarkable faux generosity of spirit and seemingly optimistic utopianism — is actually astonishingly bleak. What Zohran Mamdani and his fellow travelers are telling people is that they live in a dystopia in which they lack the power to better themselves. That they’re being dragged down by anchors from which only the government can free them. And if they can’t do anything about their problems, why should they try? This accountability-free approach is alluring at first glance, but a shortfall of self-responsibility always leads to a surplus of self-loathing. Moreover, the socialist dream has been, paradoxically, kept alive by American politicians’ already pernicious spending habits. Contrary to Mamdani’s claims, the United States has hardly been practicing trickle-up austerity. As of this week, America owes its creditors over $38 trillion. Is it any wonder that voters — who have yet to suffer the worst consequences of the debt crisis — wonder why they shouldn’t receive free health care, child care, transportation and more for this substantial cost? Holding people back The charge is even more curious in New York, where the city and state enjoy ritual increases passed as a matter of course by its homogenous, left-wing leaders, who have saddled their constituents with countless taxes, regulations and union concessions — you know, the kind of malignant nuisances that actually hold people back. Mamdani wants to worsen the housing crisis with price controls; why not unshackle its builders instead? Rather than stripping gifted students of opportunities to excel, why not extend the offer to more? And if there are a dearth of well-paying jobs in the city, shouldn’t he be trying to attract, rather than antagonize, employers? The siren song of socialism always begins so beautifully. The extravagant promises, the dearth of trade-offs: It’s John Lennon’s “Imagine” come to life. But Americans had best plug their ears and look past the fog to the rocky shores ahead. Because they, not the bogeymen of Mamdani’s campaign, are at the helm.)

The answer comes in two parts, beginning with the rise of equity in America. Equity is a sleek euphemism that’s gained cultural rizz for Progressive Americans who believe the future lies in a virulent form of social Marxism that’s cloaked in woke cultural rizz of transgender rights, social justice, equality, fairness, tolerance, critical race theory, DEI, anti-racism, white supremacy, and systemic inequality. It’s an expansion of Marxist theory, transformed by critical theory and postmodern philosophy, which connects with the emotions of those who suffer the harsh realities of inner-city poverty and violence perpetrated by generations of Leftist policy. Rather than take responsibility for the urban decay that undeniably spews from their liberalism, Democrats turned to equity’s neo-Marxist message, declaring that the suffrage in New York was the result genocidal oppression of America’s Western, Judeo-Christian, capitalist ideals (enforced by the fascist Trump administration) that created the endless inequalities of wealth, education, race, crime, incarceration, gender, sexual preference, patriarchy, and white supremacy that were systemically devouring inner-city New Yorkers. Equity was the only solution to end inequalities, because it would ensure comprehensive equal outcomes for all by imposing economic justice, tolerance, gender freedom, absolute sexual liberation, and anti-racism; it’s the last great hope of liberating humanity. Mamdani claimed his vision could deliver New York, which resonated with those who suffered from inner-city decay and despair. Equity has captured the minds of New Yorkers because it offers a new moral vision of “hope” and unlimited freedom, as a nation facing an existential crisis leaves Christianity in record numbers. People who need a new secular religion to replace Christianity were drawn to equity’s promise to bring justice and deliverance of a progressive and permissive post-Christian society. Everyone who suffered the oppression of poverty, hunger, incarceration, white supremacy, homophobia, and transphobia would thrive in racial and economic equality. They would be equally free to choose the lifestyle they want and the pleasure they deserve, all without condemnation. And the rich are finally going to surrender their wealth to pay for it all. The Left, and many in America, are buying in. It boggles the mind that this genocidal narrative that’s failed all through history has become truth in the uncritical mind. But the Left has abandoned reason for the post-truth world of emotions, a second critical point that led to Mamdani’s win. We live in a post-truth world where feelings and emotions determine reality, and facts and reason no longer matter. Today, the feelings, preferences, and desires that confirm our pre-existing narratives and cognitive biases define our individual “truths.” It’s the consequence of the postmodern movement’s quiet destruction of reason and rational thought, which has successfully undermined our confidence that truth exists and that facts, data, logic, and common sense accurately describe the world. Philosophers argued that rationalism could not intrinsically justify its claim that facts were derived from objective reality. There was no objective truth; facts were simply beliefs and opinions in a world of moral relativism. Postmodernism’s successful destruction of truth left humanity in a bind. People needed another way to interpret the world once they left rationalism behind. Emotivism, which argued that preferences, attitudes, or feelings determined all our value judgments, replaced truth and reason as post-truth became the choice of a nation determined to bask in the glow of its emotions. Today, the death of facts has liberated the world from the inconvenience of verification or falsification; “truth” is whatever aligns with feelings, emotions, and preferences. Ben Shapiro’s “Facts don’t care about your feelings” is a reaction to post-truth’s devastating effect on the nation. What happens when you offer equity as liberation to a vast number of people who have little hope of escaping the suffering and rely on their emotions to confirm predetermined anti-Western narratives? They accept it as reality without critical evaluation because a post-truth world doesn’t rely on the facts of failed Leftist policies. Feelings convince them that their suffering is caused by the racism, greed, and religious bigotry imposed under decades of Republican fascism. It is a perfect storm to resonate within the hearts of those who suffer generations of poverty, violence, and the loss of hope. This is how Mamdani won: his rise in New York followed the same path that brought Lenin, Stalin, Mao, and Pol Pot to power. They promised to rescue the suffering masses, yet the masses didn’t understand political theory or have the capacity to comprehend what Marxism meant for their future. Critical thinking wasn’t part of the equation; they wanted an end to their pain and suffering imposed by the heavy hands of the Tsars and the oligarchs of their day. They trusted anyone who offered deliverance from oppression and the promise of unlimited freedom and prosperity. One can hardly blame them, yet they suffered beyond imagination for generations. Over 100 million died and nearly all experienced starvation, torture, imprisonment, and, most importantly of all, the near-total loss of their freedom. We must come to terms with the implications of Mamdani’s victory. It would be easy to rationalize it as New York’s momentary loss of sanity, telling ourselves that the communist new dark age that tormented the USSR, China, and Cambodia could never happen here. But, as Mamdani’s win shows us, anything is possible in a post-truth world of pain and suffering. Even here in America.)
