Because my father had brittle (hard to control) type 1 diabetes from age 14, everyone always thought that his days were numbered. He died suddenly of heart failure in 1969 when he was 47 and I was 21. He worked in the office of a nasty chemical plant on the far east side of Chicago Heights 1941-1969. He almost always worked second jobs to pay the family’s bills. He did not buy a new car until he was 45 and it was a bottom of the line 2-door Chevy. His career advancement was limited not only because he had brittle type 1 diabetes, but because he did not have a college degree. Doctors advised him and advised his parents that the stress of getting a college degree would harm his health. The aforesaid encouraged me to take college preparatory courses in high school, get a score of 24 on the ACT, and graduate in the upper 20% of my class. The aforesaid encouraged me to earn money a) to buy a new car to commute to classes at UIC from my parents’ home in Crete, b) to pay for my college expenses, and c) to become a home owner. I did yard work and delivered newspapers 1962-1964; washed dishes 1964-1966; cleaned golf shoes, chipped slag, and pumped gasoline in 1966; delivered mail 1966-1969; worked on an automobile assembly line and as a security guard in 1970; sold tires, automotive services, and major appliances 1970-1971; pumped gasoline 1971-1972; and collected delinquent taxes 1971-1980. I bought a new Pontiac Tempest Sprint (a poor man’s GTO) in 1966, new 1968 Oldsmobile 442 in 1967, new 1969 Dodge Charger SE in 1968, and a new 1972 Corvette in 1971. I bought a new town home in University Park in 1972, a studio condo in downtown Chicago in 1974, and a one bedroom condo in the same building in 1976. I graduated debt-free from NIU in 1970, earned an MBA from Loyola in 1976, and earned a master’s degree in an accounting from DePaul in 1980. I passed the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979 and I passed the Certified Internal Auditor examination on my first attempt in 1981.)

Workers who come from lower social-class origins in the United States are 32 percent less likely to become managers than those who come from higher social-class origins. This, it turns out, is a worldwide phenomenon, with social class disadvantage prevailing in every major economy in the world. Reading this is both not a surprise, but also struck me for the novelty. Why isn’t the conversation about class more prevalent when we consider diversity in the workplace? ED: That’s a big question, and I’m not sure there’s one answer. It is true that while companies have a number of employee resource groups, very few (only Uber, according to the research of the author) explicitly has an employee resource group based on social class. Yet only 5% of that tribe expressed support for the theoretical 2024 candidacy of Utah Sen. Mitt Romney, the most Kinzingeresque of the potential Republican presidential hopefuls. Overall, 88% of respondents had a favorable opinion of Trump’s presidency and 57% said they’d definitely vote for him if he runs again. And while, yes, Anthony Fabrizio worked as a pollster for Trump in 2016 and 2020, FiveThirtyEight’s pollster rating gives his firm decent marks and says its results skew slightly Democratic. Further, the overall image emerging from the Fabrizio Lee poll of the GOP as a party in cultish thrall to Trump is born out by news story after news story of moderate Republican officeholders under threat or heading for the exits. Kinzinger hasn’t announced his political plans yet and did not return my request for comment. But if he runs for reelection in 2022 the “fight and battle” he envisions looks to be far tougher than just “difficult.”)
