GOVERNMENT EXECUTIVE
— Why America needs the GAO: DD: For almost 18 years, I worked for the Democrats who ran GAO. If Gingrich had reformed GAO during that time instead of gutting it, DOGE would not have been needed.
https://www.govexec.com/oversight/2025/11/why-america-needs-gao-doge-done-right/409745/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Ten months after the launch of Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency, one thing is clear: no one can agree on how much money it saved—or, in fact, whether it saved any money at all—and, if there were savings, what happened to them. What if DOGE were done right? Here something else is clear: we have had the Government Accountability Office, founded as a green-eye-shade operation back in 1921 to audit every single government transaction. It’s grown into the indispensable watchdog on the federal government’s spending and operations. It’s what DOGE done right looks like. At first, Musk promised to find $2 trillion in savings. Then the pledge dropped to $1 trillion. Then he struggled to document any savings at all. Since 2002, GAO’s work has logged more than $1.45 trillion in savings for taxpayers, across more than 29,000 different federal operations. Last year, savings were $67.5 billion. And better than most watchdogs glad to gobble up every available can of dog food, GAO has kept watch on itself. It’s measured the return on taxpayer investment in its own operations: $123 for every budget dollar. It’s operations aren’t flashy. In fact, they’re pretty wonky, which as card-carrying wonks we greatly admire. Its staff get advanced training when they walk into the door, which never stops as employees move up through the ranks. The size of its staff, which was reduced from 5,200 staff to its current level of about 3,500 after the Republican takeover of the House in 1995, has been relatively stable over the last decade, despite expanding demands on its work. Musk promised to trim the number of federal agencies. “There’s so many that people have never heard of. I think we should be able to get away with 99 agencies,” he said. It wasn’t clear where that number came from. It was clear from his work that DOGE didn’t know how to get there. GAO, on the other hand, has been identifying areas of duplication and overlap since 2011, with $725 billion in savings in this area alone. As others were struggling to come up with solid savings, GAO in May issued a 154-page report detailing just how to do more. Musk brought in IT whiz kids to comb through the federal government’s information services, but they had little to show for it except putting the security of Americans’ personal information at risk. GAO, in contrast, laid out a plan for figuring out how to save money on IT. Better proof-of-concept work in space-based laser communications could save hundreds of million dollars—and the government could pick up $157 billion by better managing the payment rates in Medicare. In a February Oval Office meeting, Musk claimed the federal government was full of officials who had approved money for “fraudsters,” but that claim turned out to be little more than arm-waving. GAO, in contrast, has since 1990 prepared a report every two years on programs prone to waste, fraud, abuse and mismanagement. Its latest report, in February 2025, identified 38 areas needing special attention. This “high-risk list” bears careful reading for anyone who really cares about getting into the guts of the problem. It identifies issues ranging from contract management in the Pentagon to money leaking out of federal disability programs to management of oil and gas leases to mega-challenges inside the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s disaster assistance. Even a casual look of the report—all 323 pages of it—would convince any reader that it’s a road map for which stones to unturn to get at the unholy trinity of waste, fraud and abuse. But there’s more here. GAO keeps score so we can see who’s making progress—and who isn’t. In 10 areas, federal agencies made $84 billion in progress. Three slipped backwards—acquisition of weapons systems by the Pentagon, improving IT management throughout the government and managing the federal government’s property. And even more. GAO doesn’t operate like a sheriff riding into town promising to clean up the saloons. It has developed a big-picture look at federal operations and identified leading practices that federal agencies can pick up. Like any oversight body, federal agencies don’t always like what they hear and often squawk. But there’s no question that we—and even they—are a whole lot better off for GAO’s work. GAO is relatively little known outside government. Even less well known is the fact that it’s an agency that works for Congress. That often is a thorn in the side of the administration, regardless of who’s in power, because GAO often says things the administration would rather not hear. That’s especially been the case in recent months with GAO’s findings that the administration has violated the law in impounding federal money—refusing to spend money that Congress appropriated. This was at the root of Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought’s statement that GAO “shouldn’t exist”. The OMB Director doesn’t want anyone looking over their shoulder, just as students don’t like to take home report cards that aren’t straight-A’s or spend their time in detention. But now that we’re closing in on the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and celebrating the Constitution that the founders crafted to govern us, we need to strengthen the balance-of-powers model that Madison and the other founders left us. They deliberately chose not to give us an easy system to use in governing ourselves. That means the three branches of government are always going to be jousting with each other—and that’s how it should be. In the growing complexity of our society, we need governmental institutions that can keep up with that complexity. That means Congress, in turn, needs muscle to do the heavy lifting required to oversee the executive branch, whether it’s a Republican or Democratic Congress, or a Republican or Democratic President. That’s what Washington, Madison, Jefferson, Hamilton and the other founders had in mind. And that’s why the next month is so important. The current head of GAO, Comptroller General Gene Dodaro, will be at the end of his fifteen-year term, the longest term in the federal government except for the lifetime appointment of federal judges, and the process to name a successor will shift into high gear. A special commission—consisting of congressional leaders—recommends a slate of individuals to the president. The president selects one person to nominate, and the Senate must then confirm the new head. This appointment is a pretty big deal. It will ensure strong oversight through the 2030s into the 2040s and reinforce the balance of powers for even longer. GAO will provide the executive branch with the independent insights it needs to wring out waste, fraud and abuse. It is a tool that Congress can use to hold the executive branch accountable, essential because a weak GAO weakens the legislative branch. We all have a stake in making sure that GAO can provide the oversight the Constitution requires—and the balance of powers that they designed.)

— As major firms green-light AI for performance reviews, should others follow suit? Artificial intelligence promises efficiency and data-driven insights, but it could also subject employers to bias claims and compliance obligations, sources say. DD: Democrat and RINO employers use performance reviews to get rid of their Republican employees. They paint their Democrat employees as positively as they can and they paint their Republican employees as negatively as they can. In Diersen v. GAO, I entered into the court record all the many performance reviews that my Democrat superiors gave me 1980-1997. None of them came close to justifying the many adverse actions that they took against me. They forced me to take a $23,472 (21%) pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980. They kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO. They delayed my promotions and never promoted me beyond GS-13. They always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance. They forced me to retire when I was 49 years old in 1997.

In my defense, I would not have become postal employee when I was 18 years old in 1966 if my high school friend had not asked me to take the postal employment test with him. I would not have become an IRS employee when I was 22 years old in 1971 if Oldsmobile had not agreed to stop hiring Whites to settle an EEOC complaint. https://buckscountybeacon.com/2025/11/a-lost-generation-of-news-consumers-survey-shows-how-teenagers-dislike-the-news-media/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Asked by the News Literacy Project for one word to describe today’s news media, 84% of teens responded with something negative — “biased,” “crazy,” “boring,” “fake, ”bad,” “depressing,” “confusing,” “scary.” More than half of the teens surveyed believe journalists regularly engage in unethical behaviors like making up details or quotes in stories, paying sources, taking visual images out of context or doing favors for advertisers. Less than a third believe reporters correct their errors, confirm facts before reporting them, gather information from multiple sources or cover stories in the public interest — practices ingrained in the DNA of reputable journalists. To some degree, teens reflect the attitudes they’re exposed to, particularly when the most prominent politician of their age has made “fake news” a mantra. Experts say few teens follow news regularly or learn in school about the purpose of journalism. Journalists don’t help themselves with mistakes or ethical lapses that make headlines. Opinionated reporters or commentators in an era of political division make readers wonder what to believe. “Some of this (attitude) is earned, but much of it is based on misperception,” said Peter Adams, senior vice president of research and design for the Washington-based News Literacy Project. There are ways to turn things around, but it will take work. Many of Lily Ogburn’s classmates get their information from social media. Their parents didn’t watch or read news reports as they grew up, so they didn’t pick up the habit, said Ogburn, a senior at Northwestern University’s journalism school. Ogburn is the former editor-in-chief at the well-regarded Daily Northwestern student newspaper. The newspaper’s 2023 reports on alleged hazing and racism within the school’s football program led to the ouster of its coach. Still, she found some students don’t understand the newspaper’s role; they believe it exists to protect people in power rather than hold them accountable. She frequently had to explain what she did to classmates. “There’s a lot of mistrust toward journalists,” she said. But it has firmed her resolve to stick with the profession. “I want to be a journalist that people trust,” Ogburn said, “and I want to report news that makes people believe and trust in the media.” The news industry’s financial troubles over the past two decades have hollowed out newsrooms and left fewer journalists on duty. Along with not seeing much legitimate journalism, young people frequently don’t experience it through popular culture — unlike a previous generation, which learned in detail how Washington Post reporters Robert Woodward and Carl Bernstein exposed the Watergate scandal in the Academy Award-winning movie “All the President’s Men.” When the News Literacy Project asked, two-thirds of teens couldn’t think of anything when asked what movies or TV shows come to mind when they think about journalism. Those who had answers most frequently cited the “Spider-Man” franchise or the movie “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy.” Neither portrayal was particularly flattering. Upon retiring as editor of Newsday, Howard Schneider helped develop the State University of New York system’s first School of Journalism. But instead of teaching future writers, editors or producers, he became drawn to teaching non-journalists about being news consumers. Now the executive director of SUNY Stony Brook’s Center for News Literacy, Schneider wasn’t surprised about any of the recent survey’s findings, either. “The negativity, the feeling that news is biased, is just a reflection of how their parents feel,” Schneider said. “The more exposed to news, legitimate news, the more their attitudes turn positive.” He has developed news literacy programs for school districts. “Students will say, ‘I get my news from YouTube,’” he said. “I say, ‘No, you don’t,’” and explains where the news originates and how to be discerning about what they see.)

Nevertheless, I continue to have the ability, motivation, experience, time, and money to spend 10+ hours each and every day putting GOPUSA ILLINOIS newsletters together and sending them out. When I was 25 years old in 1974, my Democrat IRS superiors used up-or-out to write me off as being too old to be promoted to GS-13. They would not have done that if I had been a Democrat, minority, female, or veteran. DD: Have you refused orders? I have not. Democrats run the federal government. Virtually all federal employees are Democrats. Such a role could be viewed positively by highlighting their efforts to: Inform Constituents: Curating and sharing political news and commentary can be seen as an effort to keep fellow members of a political community informed on relevant issues and perspectives. Promote Discussion: By sharing information from various sources, an individual might aim to encourage broader discussion and understanding of different viewpoints within their political group. Support Party Goals: Engaging in activities that align with a political party’s platform and working to support candidates who represent those values can be viewed as a positive contribution to the party’s objectives. Their parents bought them cars, paid their college expenses, and got them good jobs.
https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/investigations/3897219/how-millions-illegal-immigrants-got-jobs-us/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Millions of illegal immigrants residing in the United States have managed to get jobs despite their immigration status. The fact that 8.5 million illegal immigrants have obtained work in the country is a result of employers paying workers under the table, unknowingly hiring workers who have committed document fraud, and hiring non-U.S. citizens whom the government authorizes to work temporarily. The largest number of illegal immigrants work in construction, followed by accommodation, food services, and manufacturing. Immigrants who are paid under the table are the most difficult for the federal government to track because they are often employed in person-to-person gigs. These include workers hired at home improvement stores or as house cleaners who offer their services on social media marketplaces, as well as businesses such as landscaping companies and restaurants. All employers in the U.S. are legally required to verify that new hires have completed an I-9 form, which requires the applicant’s Social Security number, proof of identity, and work authorization documentation. Select immigrants navigating immigration proceedings in court or who are temporarily protected from deportation may be issued a Social Security card for the purpose of working legally in the U.S., but this document does not confer U.S. citizenship or lawful presence. The Bipartisan Policy Center defended workers who are illegal immigrants and said many choose to file federal taxes on their own at the year’s end despite working off the books. In this case, workers without Social Security numbers use an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number issued by the IRS to report income and pay taxes on what they earn. “Many undocumented immigrants find ways to legally pay both federal income and payroll taxes even if they don’t have a Social Security number (which is normally required) and even if their income was earned by working illegally,” the BPC wrote in an analysis on illegal immigrants in the workplace. “Though there are many undocumented immigrants who are paid ‘under the table’ for their work and do not pay taxes on their income, many others do pay in the hope that it will someday help them become citizens,” the BPC analysis reads.)

While I worked for IRS 1971-1980 and for GAO 1980-1997, all of my subordinates were Democrats who were minority, female, younger, veteran, disabled, and/or had major performance problems. I never refused orders to give them preference. I gave them lots of preference. But that was not enough for my Democrat superiors. Because I complained about their political affiliation discrimination, reverse discrimination, and age discrimination, they ever-increasingly wasted my career, ever-increasingly took more and bigger adverse actions against me, and ultimately forced me to retire when I was 49 years old in 1997.

— Are Boomers Really To Blame for Our Money Struggles? DD: Compared to our peers, my wife and I spent far less of our income for immediate pleasures and saved far more of our income for our retirement. My critics/opponents stress that we would not have been able to save as much for our retirement if I had not avoided the Vietnam War draft and if we had children.
https://www.aol.com/articles/rachel-cruze-boomers-really-blame-161605313.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Because baby boomers have lived more within their means, avoiding overly expensive vacations and things like home remodels, and sometimes staying at the same jobs for years or even decades, Cruze calls them a very “content generation.” Millennials, on the other hand, are “trying to keep up with the Joneses” and often lead unsustainably expensive lifestyles, she said. Boomers may have been more content because when they turned 30, jobs were stable and housing was affordable. Millennials reached that age amid soaring costs, student loans and fewer long-term guarantees regarding the job market. Although the U.S. today is harder to afford for young people, millennials are leading the renovation trend, with 60% planning projects in 2025, according to Housing Wire. Millennials also are one of the biggest groups that were planning to increase their spending on travel at the end of 2024, according to Deloitte. Millennials’ spending habits have landed them deeper in debt, and there has been a huge increase in members of the generation entering debt consolidation, as per USA Today. Their debt can’t be directly attributed to the boomer generation, though. Instead, it may simply be that millennials are making costlier choices than their parents, along with, of course, living in a costlier world in general.)

— The solution to America’s cost-of-living crisis. Robin Hood economics don’t work. DD: The cost-of-living in DuPage County is very high. I bought a new townhome in University Park after my IRS salary had increased from $55,850/year to $68,315/year in today’s dollars when I was 24 years old in 1972. But if that townhome had been built in DuPage County, I could not have afforded it. When my wife and I got married in 1978, we were able to buy a home in Wheaton ( https://www.redfin.com/IL/Wheaton/1017-E-Harrison-Ave-60187/home/18135528 ) a) because my IRS salary was $108,978/year in today’s dollars, b) because of my wife’s salary, and c) because my wife had saved enough for the down payment.

— Senate and Trump on a Collision Course Over the Leadership of the GAO
https://www.aei.org/op-eds/senate-and-trump-on-a-collision-course-over-the-leadership-of-the-gao/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Gene L. Dodaro is not a household name. He is a mild-mannered man who is rarely seen without a necktie and dark suit, and who speaks in a flat, matter-of-fact tone. He has worked for the federal government since 1973. Yet, his retirement in December may well set off a separation-of-powers battle royale between President Donald Trump and Congress. Dodaro is the head of the Government Accountability Office, which has been a thorn in the president’s side during his second term. And by law, Trump gets to nominate the next Comptroller General, as the GAO’s leader is termed. Long before there was the Department of Government Efficiency, there was the GAO, which regularly publicly exposes governmental cost overruns and failed policies that squander taxpayer dollars. Congress established the nonpartisan agency in 1921 to audit agencies and help lawmakers root out fraud and rein in the federal deficit. Today, GAO may be best known for its frequent reporting on “improper payments” flowing from executive agencies, which amounted to more than $160 billion last year. The agency’s deep-dive investigations of federal agency operations, such as the use of solitary confinement in federal prisons, often stoke congressional oversight. Trump has made it a policy to bring to heel government watchdogs his administration views as needlessly interfering in matters best left to executive branch officials. Trump has fired or demoted at least 20 inspector generals, whose job it is to uncover illicit doings by executive branch agencies, since returning to office in January. The president also canned the heads of the Office of Government Ethics and the Office of Special Counsel, both of whom set policies aimed at curbing mischief by federal officials. Earlier this year, the White House sought to embed a team of individuals from the DOGE in GAO. The agency rebuffed them and released a letter it sent to DOGE that declared, “GAO is a legislative branch agency that conducts work for Congress. As such, we are not subject to DOGE or Executive Orders.” Repeatedly, the White House has clashed with GAO over its legal opinions faulting various executive agencies for failing to spend congressionally appropriated funds. Last month, for example, Dodaro’s team deemed illegal the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s “withholding, delaying, or effectively precluding the obligation or expenditure of budget authority” for a few disaster mitigation and relief programs. Subsequently, Russ Vought, the head of the president’s Office of Management and Budget, told executive agency heads that GAO’s reports and legal opinions should be considered “non-binding” on them. In September, the clash flared up again. Vought criticized GAO, telling a conference of conservatives, “We are not big fans of GAO. They are a quasi-legislative independent entity … something that shouldn’t exist.” Dodaro defended his agency in a statement to the media. “Clearly, Russell Vought does not value transparency and accountability,” Dodaro said. “GAO’s mission is to support Congress in carrying out its constitutional responsibilities. During my tenure as Comptroller General alone, GAO’s work has saved taxpayers over $1.2 trillion and resulted in tens of thousands of improvements to how federal programs work.” Dodaro’s 15-year term expires on Dec. 29, and Trump quite probably would prefer he be replaced with someone who would call off GAO’s oversight dogs. At first blush, it might appear the president is likely to get his way. The GOP-controlled Senate has shown itself willing to vote for weak or ill-qualified nominees for high positions. Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., for example, was made the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services despite having little management experience and some crank ideas about health. Yet, a closer look suggests the president may face an uphill battle in the Senate. Republican senators have been willing to deep-six Trump appointees, particularly to low-profile positions. Trump has withdrawn a record high of 48 nominations this year. In recent weeks, they have forced the withdrawal of nominees to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Export-Import Bank, and the Office of Special Counsel. They also appear to be rejecting Trump’s proposed ambassador to Kuwait. Many, if not most, senators value GAO’s work. Unlike, say, communications from lobbyists, interest groups, and their political parties, GAO reports and opinions are factually-based. The agency does not get more money or rewards from helping a legislator understand why fraudsters can rip off the federal SNAP food program. GAO’s value would be greatly diminished if senators approved a new comptroller general who viewed himself as the president’s advocate and defender. Nor does it appear likely that Trump could circumvent the Senate and install an acting head of GAO. The law empowers the GAO deputy director to take over the top position when Dodaro’s term ends, and it requires Congress to form a commission headed by the majority and minority leaders of both chambers to propose potential nominees for the president’s consideration. And not to be forgotten is that Congress rebuffed Trump the last time he attempted this maneuver. This spring, his acting appointees were turned away from the Library of Congress and the Copyright Office, with the support of both Senate and House GOP leaders.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Yet, as America nears its 250th birthday, we’re still subjected to revisionist accounts by historians who let personal ideology guide their conclusions. Their accounts drip with presentism, fixating on flaws while ignoring the revolutionary ideals that make us exceptional. Their echo chamber rings with the same off-key refrains about slavery and purported systemic racism. Let’s be clear: to all their shame, nearly every country in the world saw slavery within its borders. Some still do. Yet America is the only major country that ever fought a civil war to end it. Chattel slavery in southern states doesn’t define America; how we ended it — and that we ended it — does. Those who falsely allege systemic racism here ignore our constitutional provisions that guarantee equal protection of the law. It took more than a century for those promises to be kept, but they’ve never been stronger. Instances of racism exist because sin exists, and no country has done as much as America to quell it. Immigrants of every skin color seek to come here because they recognize that racism doesn’t define America — the muscular body of law that redresses individual cases of it does. No nation populated by imperfect humans can ever be perfect, but America stretches closest to that unreachable goal.)

SEE: https://www.google.com/search?q=IRS+%22revenue+agent%22+%22revenue+officer%22& That is why I started taking graduate evening accounting courses in 1976. But my Democrat IRS superiors ignored/dismissed/belittled that. They would not have done that if I had been a Democrat, minority, female, younger, or veteran. To disallow my education deductions in 1978, my Democrat IRS superiors falsely argued that I did the aforesaid to become a Revenue Agent. The aforesaid motivated me to transfer to GAO in 1980. TOWNHALL
— Confronting Anti-Ellis Island immigration
https://townhall.com/columnists/victordavishanson/2025/11/13/confronting-anti-ellis-island-immigration-n2666440
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Between 1892 and 1954, approximately 12 million immigrants arrived at the now-iconic Ellis Island to enter the U.S. — or nearly 200,000 legal entries per year. All were registered, documented, and given rudimentary health exams. They arrived as rich and poor, white and non-white, and, without exception, legally. With the gradual decline of such great influxes, Ellis Island finally ceased operating roughly 71 years ago. Yet Ellis Island’s successful tenure offers a sharp contrast to the failures of our recent open-border catastrophes. Americans will never know how many immigrants swarmed the southern border between 2021 and 2025, when former President Joe Biden and his impeached Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas destroyed federal immigration law as we once knew it. By design, they allowed between 10 and 12 million foreign nationals to make a mockery of federal immigration laws by swarming the southern border. Many crossers grew violent at any sign of even meek efforts by ICE officers to enforce the law. Border Patrol officers were often mocked, threatened, and assaulted by arriving illegal aliens. Officers were unsure as to what was worse: the occasional violence from illegal immigrants or retaliation from the Biden administration if they sought to enforce federal law and block illegal entrants. So the Biden administration pulled off the near impossible. In a mere four years, it had invited in almost as many illegal immigrants as had entered through Ellis Island legally over seven decades. But unlike past immigrants, we now witness organized violence against ICE officials. We see Orwellian scenes of mobs burning the American flag — the flag of the country they demand to stay in — while waving the flags of the countries they have no desire or intention of returning to. In sum, three generations ago, a smaller, poorer, but wiser America properly solved its immigration problem at Ellis Island — welcoming in immigrants orderly and legally with health and background screenings. In contrast, during the Biden years, we, in our arrogance and affluence, engaged in a great experiment — or rather misadventure. Never in our history has the U.S. been home to roughly 53 million foreign-born residents. Never have immigrants comprised nearly 16 percent of the population. Never has California had 27% of its residents not born in the U.S. Never have we allowed in up to 10,000 aliens a day, with little concern for whether they carried fentanyl, had criminal records, were sick, were unvaccinated, were traffickers, or belonged to violent gangs. Worse still, the Biden administration made zero effort to acculturate, integrate, and assimilate this massive influx. In fact, they did the very opposite of Ellis Island’s protocols, which fostered pro-American values, melting-pot integration, and respect for American history and culture. Once upon a time, new arrivals were all expected to become Americans — or why else had they come? Now, the moment an illegal alien has entered the U.S., he likely senses that his ethnicity or race will be essential to his identity. In the minds of the ruling DEI commissariat, claiming a tribal identity offers an easy pathway to generous housing, food, healthcare, legal, and educational entitlements. So, under Biden’s immigration non-policy, almost all illegal immigrants were immediately categorized as victims in the Marxist binary ledger that now divides America into the oppressed vs. the oppressors. If one devised a plan to damage America, he could not have done better than further dividing us by tribal chauvinism, overwhelming our fragile social services so essential to struggling Americans, and fueling the already dangerous neo-Confederate state and local nullifications of federal law and the growth of “sanctuary cities.” Daily, we witness performance-art mayors and governors boasting of how they “resist” federal law enforcement. These modern rebels pose as if they are our own era’s versions of mini-Confederate states. They now brag of states’ rights as they dare the federal government to protect its own property and enforce federal laws within their parochial jurisdictions. Why did Biden — or whoever was making policy in his place — destroy the border? What was his utterly mad intent? To alter the nation’s demography by importing future Democratic constituents dependent on state largesse? To bow to the demands of his DEI base? To mindlessly do the opposite of the prior Trump administration, which had closed the border and returned to legal-only immigration? Virtue signaling while waving illegal aliens across an open border is easy. But trying to close the border and return millions who entered unlawfully to their homelands is nearly impossible. It is surreal that those who claimed moral superiority while systemically destroying federal law now condemn as immoral those striving to restore it.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Buoyed by a raucous Kane County crowd, Republican candidates in the Illinois gubernatorial primary race debated taxes, crime and electability Monday. The governor hopefuls at the Kane County Republican Organization forum in West Dundee comprised Ted Dabrowski and James Mendrick. Also speaking was lieutenant governor candidate Aaron Del Mar, representing his running mate Darren Bailey. Asked what the single most important change they’d make if elected, Mendrick honed in on a campaign theme. “The sanctuary state — that is my No. 1 change,” said Mendrick, who is DuPage County sheriff. “For years, (President) Biden’s open borders policy let people in relentlessly. We have a secondary population being laid on a primary population; there is no way we can afford this.” Del Mar, the Cook County Republican Party Chair, advocated for lowering property taxes and ending cronyism in state government. “We need to get all the patronage jobs out of here,” the Palatine resident said. Dabrowski, a Wilmette resident and former president of media/research company Wirepoints, said the GOP needs more “principled leadership” and criticized Republican lawmakers who voted for tax and gas hikes. “We will never be able to have a proper Republican brand if we’re not consistent,” he said. Talking points. Dabrowski told the suburban audience the biggest thing they have to think about is who can beat Pritzker in 2026. “I supported Darren Bailey last time strongly. But we know in the end, they fell short, largely up here,” he said. Bailey unsuccessfully ran against Pritzker in 2022. Del Mar ran as lieutenant governor on a ticket with Gary Rabine. “Experience matters,” Del Mar said, referring to Bailey’s time as a state lawmaker and local elected official. “Darren has prayed and he’s thought about all the things he did wonderfully (in 2022). But then he went and studied all the things he did wrong.” Meanwhile, Mendrick emphasized “we need to go back to the definition of a minor, which means under 18 years of age and make it illegal to discuss sex with kids. And that means (no) porn in libraries and schools.” “We need to come back to American principles. We need to bring back God and the nuclear family.” Reducing crime. Asked about crime and safety, Del Mar criticized the Illinois TRUST Act, which prohibits law enforcement agencies from assisting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers, with some exceptions. “Every time we have a felon that we find out is illegal, after they get arrested and they do their time and they get released, we can’t notify federal law enforcement to take them away,” Del Mar said. Mendrick suggested “let’s start with respecting and treating our law enforcement like the heroes they are.” He also noted his longtime opposition to the state’s SAFE-T Act, which ended cash bail. “How about all felonies stay in jail?” Mendrick said. “How about multiple repeat offenders for misdemeanors stay in jail — you don’t need to worry about money now, that solves it really easily.” Dabrowski called Illinois’ sanctuary state stance “extreme.” “In Florida, if they find a bad guy, an illegal immigrant bad guy, do you know what they do? The local authorities take the guy, put him in handcuffs, and hand him right over to the federal authorities. Problem solved. No chaos. Just done,” he said. Economic concerns Candidates also dug into Illinois’ economy and pension debt. “Property taxes are the biggest complaint everywhere I go,” Dabrowski said. He touted his abilities to make DOGE-like cuts, and singled out the high salaries for school superintendents. “We need to move to 401(k)s for all new government workers,” he added. Mendrick supported giving municipalities a greater share of the state’s Local Government Distributive Fund and advocated for a mobile 401(k) pension system. “If you quit or go somewhere else, you can take your pension with you,” he said. “That may be attractive enough to replace the existing pension system.” Del Mar countered that many firefighters, police officers and downstate teachers are Republicans. “Telling them you’re going to take their pensions away is not a good way of getting them to vote for you,” he said. “We need to look at ways to grow Illinois. We want to expand and grow the economy and lessen the burden of debt and taxes,” Del Mar added. The other Republicans in the race are Broadview resident Gregg Moore; video gambling business owner Rick Heidner of Barrington Hills; Joseph Severino of Lake Forest; and Max Solomon of Hazel Crest.)
