(FROM THE ARTICLE: Carrying signs with messages like “my parents aren’t criminals” and “kids shouldn’t live in fear,” more than a thousand Elgin High School students walked out of the school just after noon on Wednesday to march in protest of federal immigration enforcement. Multiple students estimated that about three-quarters of their roughly 2,500 classmates participated. “We want people to see that we can make a difference and that what we’re doing is important,” senior Silvia Scimonelli said. The roughly 2-mile march along frequently snow-covered sidewalks took the students from the school to Chicago Street, where they headed west to Willard Avenue, then south to Villa Street and back to the school. The protest follows a similar event at Elgin Area School District U-46’s Streamwood High School. Walkouts are also planned in the coming days at Larkin and South Elgin high schools. Freshman Jamison Vaskin said he took part because “what is happening in America is 100% not OK.” “I’m out here because of the dehumanization that’s happening in our country,” he said. “The attack on our Constitution and our rights, the constant abuse that ICE is inflicting on our citizens, the murder of American citizens. It is heinous.” Matthew Napoles donned a sombrero and carried a portable speaker while leading his classmates in songs and chants. He said he was there to “show ICE that we obviously don’t like them.” “They always try to take away the people that we love, and I’m just trying to keep them safe,” he said. A statement from the school district said the walkout was “initiated by a group of students who wished to express their views about an issue that is important to them.” The district sent a communication to parents on Tuesday to make them aware of the walkout and encouraged families to have conversations about “respectful expression, civic engagement, and making responsible choices while at school.” A spokesperson for the district said students who participated in the walkout were marked absent for missed instructional time, in accordance with district policy. Students were allowed back in after the protest.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: As the midterm election year gets underway, voters are already drawing clear lines between the Democratic and Republican parties on the issues. A new Fox News survey, released Thursday, finds the Republican Party is seen as better able to handle border security (by 15 points), national security (+12), and immigration (+5). The Democratic Party is favored on transgender issues (by 22 points), healthcare (+21), vaccines (+16), helping the middle class (+14), and affordability (+14). And on three issues where Republicans have recently held the edge, now neither party has shown a clear preference: taxes (+1D), foreign policy (even), and the federal budget deficit (+2R). The survey asks voters what President Donald Trump’s top priorities should be, and the economy dominates. Nearly 4 in 10 cite either the economy in general (19%) or prices (17%). The view that the Democrats can better handle affordability gives them an early edge in the generic Congressional vote preference, where voters are asked who they will support in the U.S. House race in their district this November. While the question is largely hypothetical this far out, it gives us a baseline for the coming election, according to Republican pollster Daron Shaw. “Political science analyses demonstrate that aggregate responses to this question begin to more accurately predict the actual House vote by around mid-summer,” Shaw added. “But we ask it at this point simply to get a sense of how short-term forces might play out in the general election.” The survey shows if the election were today, 52% of voters would back the Democratic candidate in their House district and 46% the Republican. That’s a 6-point edge, which is right at the poll’s margin of sampling error. The current 52% Democratic support is the highest recorded for either party; the previous high was 50% for the Democrats in October 2017. Both parties are maintaining most of their coalitions. Democrats garner support from Black voters (+48 points), voters under age 30 (+28), and college graduates (+17), while Republicans receive backing from White evangelical Christians (+41), rural voters (+21), and White voters without a degree (+10). While the parties maintain high levels of support among most of their constituencies, Republicans are twice as likely as Democrats to defect across the aisle: 8% of self-identified Republicans currently say they would back the Democratic candidate, compared to 4% of self-identified Democrats who say they would go for the Republican today. Overall, three-quarters of voters say they are extremely (56%) or very (20%) motivated to vote in the November elections, and those voters are slightly more committed to the Democratic candidate than the Republican. That’s at least partly due to more Democrats (82%) than Republicans (76%) or independents (61%) saying they feel inclined to vote this year. Overall, motivation is on par with the 2022 midterm cycle, when 54% of voters said they were extremely motivated to vote. Twenty-eight percent of voters approve of the job Congress is doing, a 2-point increase since last January and the highest approval in nearly three years. However, disapproval is also up — from 67% last year to 71% today. In the generic ballot, those who disapprove of Congress are twice as likely to support the Democratic candidate (65%) as the Republican (33%). The small group of those who approve largely favor the Republican over the Democrat (79% to 21%). As Congress considers banning stock trading among members, the new survey finds 75% of voters favor the proposal. That’s unchanged from where things stood in September and higher than the 70% who favored the measure in 2022. Majorities of Democrats (70%), Republicans (83%), and independents (67%) favor a ban on stock trading by members of Congress, their immediate family, and staff.)

This program, the Federal Employee/Retiree Delinquency Initiative (FERDI) is an IRS enforcement program targeting unpaid taxes and unfiled returns among federal employees and retirees. Established decades ago, but ramped up recently, it uses payroll and pension data to identify employees and retirees who may have unresolved tax issues. My Democrat GAO superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates were furious. According to them, I should have had to take a $72,701/year (64%) pay cut to transfer, a downgrade from GS-12 Step 5 to GS-4 Step 1 ($40,701/year). They succeeded in delaying my promotion to GS-13 ($118,984/year) until 1986. I have been fighting age discrimination since I was 25 in 1973. My Democrat IRS superiors used “up-or-out” to waste my career and get rid of me. According to them, if they had not promoted me to GS-13 by the time I was 25, I was forever too old to be promoted to GS-13. Of course, they applied that rule only to Republicans like me. They forced the IRS manager to transfer to Dallas who had promoted me to GS-9 in 1972, GS-11 in 1973, and GS-12 in 1974. The Democrats who ran GAO finally promoted me to GS-13 when I was 38 in 1986. But that was not until after I had earned a master’s degree in accounting in 1980, I had passed the Certified Internal Auditor examination on my first attempt in 1981, I had become a licensed CPA in 1981, and I had been assigned to audits of IRS in 1986. I never would have made GS-13 at GAO if the GAO manager who had arranged my transfer not gotten back into power in 1985. They forced him to retire in 1987.

But obviously, I did not earn the aforesaid fast enough. Things that slowed me down were a) my not majoring in accounting from the beginning, b) my Democrat Post Office superiors forcing me to resign when I was 20, c) my not getting higher scores on the postal management test and the FSEE when I was 21, and d) my taking only one job-related graduate evening course at a time.
