With them, they brought the practice of smoking cannabis recreationally. And it took off. The Spanish word for the plant started to be used more often too. Marijuana. Or as it was spelled at that time, marihuana, with an “H. This is when the more sensational headlines about the drug began to appear. In 1936, a propaganda film called Reefer Madness was released. In the movie, teenagers smoke weed for the first time and this leads to a series of horrific events involving hallucination, attempted rape, and murder. Much of the media portrayed it as a gateway drug. […] Harry Anslinger took the scientifically unsupported idea of marijuana as a violence-inducing drug, connected it to black and Hispanic people, and created a perfect package of terror to sell to the American media and public. Qualified individuals will be asked to submit resumes or applications that will be reviewed by council and made available to the public for its review. The candidates will all be interviewed in an open meeting and a vote on the new council member will take place in the open. Anyone who fills a vacant seat in the middle of a term has to establish their legitimacy as a full-fledged, creditable member of the council because they were not elected directly by the voting public. But the council’s decision to hold their deliberations in public and to let the public hear from the candidates before a candidate is chosen, will go a long way torward establishing the bona fides of the eventual appointee. With Roxboro’s council currently operating without hospitalized council member Sandy Stigall, the body is at a bare minimum. The process Newell laid out earlier this week sets out a deliberate, steady process to fill the vacant seat. We encourage people interested in community service to consider putting their name in the hat. Kelly Cassidy and her colleagues decided that social consumption of marijuana would be allowed, but not licensed by the state, leaving that up to local officials, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. However, video gambling machines are everywhere, except in the 125 municipalities and counties where they are banned. Living near marijuana dispensaries makes youth more likely to use marijuana, according to a study by the Rand Corp. Youth who use marijuana are more likely to experience negative consequences, such as increased risk of mental and physical health problems, according to the researchers. Here, longtime Wheaton residents Bruce Bond and John Southard, co-founders of the ETF powerhouse formerly known as PowerShares, are renovating new offices for their latest ETF venture, a company called Innovator. Just down the street is First Trust, the sixth-biggest ETF issuer in the U.S., with more than $76 billion in ETF assets. Not far away is Amplify ETFs, a white-label firm that has made a name for itself in niche funds. PowerShares, meanwhile, was sold in 2006 to Invesco Ltd.
