— What is the Purpose of the GOP? – Richard Moss

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Our “one party” system in Washington remains profoundly corrupt and self-serving. It consists of career politicians from both parties, special interests, donors, and lobbyists, all of whom agree on one thing: growing the size of government. The Republican Party, in its budgeting and voting, is a left-of-center party; it is, as I often referred to it as, the Republican wing of the Democratic Party. With an increasingly Marxist Democratic Party, and no serious conservative opposition from “soft-progressive” Republicans, the trajectory of the nation is all to the left: more spending, more programs, more socialism, and ultimately more tyranny.)

— Sanders Calls for ‘National Wealth Registry’ to Enforce New Tax – MAIREAD MCARDLE
https://www.nationalreview.com/news/bernie-calls-for-national-wealth-registry-to-enforce-new-tax/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Sanders’ annual tax on the top 0.1 percent would apply to Americans with a net worth of over $32 million, or about 180,000 households, and would raise approximately $4.35 trillion over the next decade, the Sanders campaign estimates. The Vermont senator’s plan seeks to combat capital flight and other forms of tax avoidance through a “national wealth registry” and the addition of “significant additional third party reporting requirements.” The proposal calls for increased funding for the Internal Revenue Service to cover the bureaucratic costs associated with enforcing the wealth tax. Under the plan, the IRS will be required to audit 30 percent of the top one percent’s wealth tax returns and 100 percent for billionaires. The tax would start at one percent for a married couple with $32.5 million and would progressively increase one percent for each bracket up to eight percent for those with a net worth of $10 billion. Those rates would be halved for single individuals.)

https://patch.com/illinois/naperville/naperville-opts-out-recreational-marijuana-sales
(FROM THE ARTICLE: After weeks of debate, comments from residents, and anti-cannabis rallies, the Naperville City Council voted to opt out of recreational cannabis sales Tuesday. The City Council meeting brought close to 250 residents out to share their comments about the issue, which ended in a 6-3 vote in favor of opting out. . .The topic of recreational cannabis was discussed for more than three hours at Tuesday’s meeting, which was filled with dozens of residents sporting bright orange “Opt Out Naperville” t-shirts and pins. . .After the public comment portion of the meeting, City Council members had a chance to sound off on the issue. Council member Kevin Coyne said, “I think it’s a very clear and easy decision tonight.” He added that neighboring cities Wheaton and Bolingbrook will likely opt out and that he wanted to prevent Naperville from becoming the “marijuana capital of DuPage County.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The decision to opt out of recreational pot sales came several hours after hundreds of people began packing the Naperville City Council chambers as residents and non-residents waited their turn to comment on the issue of whether to allow the retail sale of pot. The discussion on marijuana sales brought 238 people to sign up for public comment on the topic — a vast majority speaking in favor of opting out while wearing white and orange “opt out” shirts. Over the past couple weeks, the group was organized to rally and lobby city council members to keep recreational cannabis dispensaries out of Naperville. At the same time, residents in support of retail marijuana sales have circulated a survey on the issue. People who asked city council to opt out Tuesday night are concerned recreational pot dispensaries would lead to increased availability to children and would hurt the “family friendly” brand of Naperville.)

Then it was pulled away at the last minutes, because White is engaged to another woman. August 23 Morning Edition

GOPUSA ILLINOIS
— Wheaton’s City Council has narrowed the field of its 10 applicants for its West District vacancy to 3, and I am not one of them. The Council will interview those 3 finalists in the coming weeks. Critics of the Roosevelt Road corridor study by Camiros, Ltd. and Valerie Kretchmer & Associates (https://www.wheaton.il.us/930/Roosevelt-Road) have called for the Council to halt all action on the study until it fills its West District vacancy. It appears, sadly, like before, when the Council filled its North District vacancy, that it will not disclose who the 3 finalists are. I hope that the 3 finalists will get together, issue a joint press release, and call for a candidate forum to be held. Residents of Wheaton’s West District, including me, should have the opportunity to urge the Council to select one of those 3 finalists. Obviously, one could determine who the 3 finalist are if all 7 of the unsuccessful candidates got together and issued a press release. – Dave Diersen

GOPUSA ILLINOIS
— Your GOPUSA Illinois Editor, Dave Diersen, calls for DuPage County to ASAP a) draft, b) propose, c) seek input on from journalists like me, d) discuss, and e) vote on official press credentialing policies and procedures. Press credentialing requirements should NOT include a) having a degree in journalism, b) being paid, c) claiming to be just a reporter and not a journalist, d) denying being an activist, e) or claiming to be nonpartisan. I have served as the GOPUSA Illinois Editor since 2000. Since 2004, GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails have gone out each and every morning, and since 2015, each and every evening too. Those emails have included links to more than 344,100 articles and information on many upcoming events. I worked for GAO as an Analyst for almost 18 years, the last 11 years of which at the GS-13 Step 1-10 levels, currently $98,198-$127,654/year. What GAO Analysts do (https://www.gao.gov/about/careers/career-paths/) is extremely similar to what journalists do. In addition, I became a Forensic Accountant in 1997, Certified Financial Services Auditor in 1996, Certified Government Financial Manager in 1994, Certified Fraud Examiner in 1990, Licensed CPA in 1981, Certified Internal Auditor in 1981, and CPA in 1979. – Dave Diersen

GOPUSA ILLINOIS
— Government is nasty. Politics is nasty. Since 2005, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have demonized me, denigrated, me, and condemned be as being like Jeff Gannon. Since 2005, they have viciously used against me what happened with GOPUSA, Talon News, and White House Correspondent Jeff Gannon. SEE: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talon_News They paint me as being a clone of Jeff Gannon and even worse things. Ever since I became a GOPUSA reporter in 2000, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have hinted/implied/argued/shouted that I ask bad questions at press conferences and share privileged information with reporters that have caused Republican candidates to be defeated and even worse things. Of course, I should sue my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes. I should write a book about activists, candidates, elected officials, and party leaders in Illinois who claim to be religious, conservative, and/or Republican, but a) who do NOT want me to know about their press conferences, b) who do NOT want me to attend their press conferences, c) who do NOT want me to ask questions during their press conferences, d) who do NOT want me to speak with other reporters, e) who have barred me from attending their press conferences, f) who have had me thrown out of their press conferences, and/or g) who do not want me to report on their press conferences. – Dave Diersen

AMERICAN PRESS INSTITUTE
— SEPTEMBER 24, 2014 FLASHBACK: Offer disclosures and statements of values – CRAIG SILVERMAN (DIERSEN: Of course, journalists should disclose the sources and amounts of all their income. My Civil Service Retirement System pension is $53,316/year. My Social Security is $2,118/year. All the time and money necessary to send out a GOPUSA ILLINOIS email each and every morning and each and every evening comes from me. By definition, journalists who are employees of newspapers, television stations, radio stations, websites, or other organizations cannot claim to be independent of their employer. I should sue any individual, any organization, any company, or any government that hints/implies/argues/shouts that I am paid by the Republican Party, DuPage County Republican Central Committee, Milton Township Republican Central Committee, or any other organization. If the aforesaid organizations paid me, they would promote my GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails. In fact, the aforesaid organizations fail/refuse to promote my GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails. Further, journalists should disclose their citizenship status, gender, race, age, religion, national origin, how long their ancestors have been in America, if they are a veteran or not, political affiliation, work experience, education, professional certifications and licenses, etc.)
https://www.americanpressinstitute.org/publications/reports/strategy-studies/disclosures-values/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Looking across the landscape, we conclude there are typically five situations when a disclosure needs to be added to a piece of content: Personal connections to sources, organizations or events mentioned in reporting. Organizational links to sources, organizations or events mentioned in reporting. Limitations of any data or material used. (Meaning: Here’s what we don’t know, or some mitigating factors.) When unusual methods are used to gather information (such as in the above example). When there is an unusual arrangement with sources (such as enabling them to remain anonymous or use a pseudonym). . .A reporter’s name, email, phone number and even Twitter handle are now common information that accompanies their content. . .Beyond disclosures about specific reporting, more reporters and organizations are offering pages that are updated over time to disclose any personal ties, investments or relationships. . .PunditFact, an offshoot of PolitiFact, offers a paragraph of disclosure about its sources of funding right on its homepage.)

QUORA
— DECEMBER 1, 2012 FLASHBACK: What is the difference between a journalist and a reporter? – Ashutosh Sinha
https://www.quora.com/What-is-the-difference-between-a-journalist-and-a-reporter
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In professional news media, all reporters are journalists but not all journalists are reporters. “Reporter” is a specific role: Someone who gathers facts and information from multiple sources, verifies them and writes a story or relays (reports) those findings in a TV, radio or Internet broadcast. “Journalist” includes anyone who is part of the editorial process of gathering and disseminating news: Reporters, editors, producers, photographers, camera operators, news columnists, etc. In a literal sense, anyone can be a reporter by relaying their direct observations. (e.g. I saw a car crash.) With the advent of social media such as Twitter, amateur reporters are increasingly a breaking news alert network for traditional news organizations. Ordinary people can also commit acts of journalism by following the journalistic process of fact-gathering, multi-source verification and putting those facts in context (e.g. A high-speed police chase after a million dollar bank robbery yesterday ended when the suspect’s car crashed into a lamp post at a busy downtown intersection.) Today, reporters’ roles are being blurred as they are required to take on more tasks that include photography, editing, blogging, shooting and producing video, audio, etc., so “journalist” is increasingly the most appropriate catch-all term.)

TOWN COURIER
— City Councilman Robert Wu Seeks Second Term – Ellyn Wexler
http://towncourier.com/city-councilman-robert-wu-seeks-second-term/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Many of the skills Wu has honed during his day job—as senior attorney at the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO)—have helped him become effective in his City of Gaithersburg position. “I often find myself in the role of interpreting ordinances, parsing out legalese when amendments to existing language are proposed, and, at least in one instance, actually drafting an ordinance,” he said. “At GAO,” Wu explained, “I serve in a quasi-judicial role, adjudicating bid protests filed with our office. The skillset is very similar to that used in deciding matters brought before the city council, including fairmindedness, the ability to absorb large records and ultimately render a decision.” “A firm belief that process matters” also factors into both jobs. “As companies who file protests with GAO understand, while we might not necessarily agree with them in the end, each argument raised is heard and carefully considered,” Wu said. “The same goes for my work at city council. Each individual who takes their valuable time to appear before us or submit written matters has to know that their views have been heard and seriously considered.”)

— El Paso Mayor Says President Trump Called Him a RINO – BILLY PERRIGO (DIERSEN: QUESTION: What do Democrat plants, Libertarian plants, Green plants, and RINOs in Republican organizations in Illinois do? ANSWER: They discourage me from putting GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails together and sending them out. They discourage everyone from reading GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails. They turn everyone that they can against me, including those who run the Holiday Inn in Carol Stream, those who ran the Wheaton Bowl, Milton Township Republican Central Committee (MTRCC) members, Wheaton City Council members, and voters in my precinct. They make false accusations against me and demonize me, denigrate me, and condemn me at MTRCC meetings. They intimidate/threaten those who might come to my defense. They discourage Republican candidates, elected officials, party leaders, and organizations from helping sponsor Wheaton’s Independence Day parade and fireworks. They promote booze, gambling, pot, and other vices.)

WIKIPEDIA
— Negative campaigning (DIERSEN: If you seek a government office or a political office, you should expect that sooner or later, your opponents will engage in negative campaigning against you. I am seeking appointment to fill Wheaton’s West District City Council vacancy. Even though there is no chance that I will be selected, my opponents in Wheaton’s West District are engaging in negative campaigning against me. At the Milton Township Republican Central Committee (MTRCC) August 14, 2019 meeting at the Holiday Inn in Carol Stream, two of my fellow MTRCC members in Wheaton’s West District falsely charged me with harassing the hotel’s employees. In addition, one of them, in front of an attorney, said that he was going to do everything that he could to stop everyone from reading my GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails.)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Negative_campaigning

(FROM THE POSTING: Negative campaigning or mudslinging is the process of deliberate spreading negative information about someone or something to worsen the public image of the described. Deliberate spreading of such information can be motivated either by honest desire of the campaigner to warn others against real dangers or deficiencies of the described, or by the campaigner’s dishonest ideas on methods of winning in political, business or other spheres of competition against an honest rival. The public image of an entity can be defined as reputation, esteem, respect, acceptance of the entity’s appearance, values and behavior by the general public of a given territory and/or a social group, possibly within time limits. As target groups of public and their values differ, so negativity or positivity of a public image is relative; thus, to be successful, negative campaigning has to take into account current values of the group it addresses. The degree of strictness in practicing the group’s values as opposed to its tolerance for violating the norms has also to be taken into consideration.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Wheaton City Council members have their pick of 10 applicants seeking to fill a vacant seat representing the West District. The group of candidates vying for a 2-year appointment to the council includes some familiar names in DuPage County politics. The applicants are: Nancy Harding, Edward Ahern, Jeffrey Antonelli, Robert McNeily, Lynn Robbins, Mark Kmiecik, Angela Blatner, David Diersen, Khizar Jafri and Krista Selvey. Diersen is the founder of the daily newsletter Gopillinois.com. McNeily lost his bid for the West District seat in 2016 against incumbent Todd Scalzo. According to his LinkedIn page, he is the Midwest regional manager of Turning Point USA, a conservative group founded by Wheeling High School alum Charlie Kirk for college and high school students. Robbins, a former Illinois Park and Recreation Association board member, also ran unsuccessfully against Scalzo for the West District seat in 2016. Kmiecik finished third in another three-way race for the seat in 2009. Jafri, a finance and accounting consultant, lost to Tim Elliott for a District 4 spot on the DuPage County Board in 2016. The Democrat was seeking his first elected office at the time. Four council members represent Wheaton’s four voting districts, while two members and the mayor are elected at-large. The seat became vacant in July when Scalzo, an attorney, stepped down after 10 years. The council is set to vote on appointing his successor in September. Council members recently filled another empty 2-year council seat. The North District seat became vacant in May when Phil Suess was sworn in as Wheaton’s first new mayor in 12 years. The council named Christopher Zaruba to the post on July 1 from a field of 13 applicants.)

https://www.thetelegraph.com/news/article/Pot-law-is-hazy-on-town-8217-s-rights-Illinois-14294240.php
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The state organization representing local units of government is asking leaders in the General Assembly to make clarifying changes to the recreational marijuana law before it takes effect Jan. 1. Brad Cole, executive director of the Illinois Municipal League, said the 1,298 cities, villages and towns in the state need guidance on four aspects of the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act, signed into law by Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker in late June. There is confusion, he said, about how law enforcers will know a person who is growing cannabis in their home is doing so legally as a prescribed medical marijuana user. Municipalities also are uncertain how they may regulate the drug. Cole is asking legislators to write what is known as a trailer bill, a companion measure that clarifies a statute. The idea has bipartisan support. Sen. Heather Steans, D-Chicago, one of the statute’s framers and her chamber’s sponsor, said it’s likely that a trailer bill will happen. Republican Sen. Jason Barickman, from Bloomington, said he thinks his colleagues spent “a lot of time on the legislative language,” and any subsequent bill should be consistent with the goals of the original negotiations. “I understand and support the idea of a trailer bill to make clarifications that the various stakeholders have brought forward. I think it’s very likely we’ll see one for multiple reasons, and we may see it as early as this fall,” he said. “I anticipate hearing from many stakeholders about clarifications they would like to see. By and large, that’s what the IML is seeking here.” In a letter to lawmakers, Cole highlighted four points the league’s members would like the General Assembly to address. Each one, he said, was mentioned in his testimony before a panel of legislators in late May before the recreational marijuana bill became law. “These are common sense issues” to determine what is legal and what is no, Cole said. The new law allows those who have a medical marijuana card to grow no more than five plants in their home without needing to be a licensed cultivation center or craft grower. The League’s concern, Cole wrote in his letter, is the lack of “registration or notification requirements to municipalities or their police departments” about which residences can legally grow cannabis plants. “We’re saying, we need to know,” he said. “How do we know if these are five legal plants or five illegal plants?” Steans said the idea of “a registry had been raised,” but some interest groups expressed concerns it might be a civil rights violation. She added local governing bodies would know if the plants were legal by asking whether their owner had a medical marijuana card. Barickman said the issue is one with “wildly different” viewpoints. “I think you’re going to have those in law enforcement presumably asking for some type of registry, and I think you’re going to have others adverse to that,” he said. Also in question is a provision in the law dictating how governing bodies can regulate recreational marijuana. “No unit of local government … may prohibit home cultivation or unreasonably prohibit use of cannabis authorized by this Act,” according to the law. Cole, in his letter, wrote that “unreasonably” is not defined, so towns and municipalities might be exposed to “unknown litigation as they attempt to protect the health, safety and well-being of their citizens.” The League is asking the General Assembly to clarify the word’s meaning. And it is seeking guidance on two regulations dictating how funds are distributed and may be spent by local governments. Money directed into one account, for example, now has rules for how it may be spent. “This is restricted money being put into an unrestricted disbursement fund,” thus creating accounting confusion for local officials, Cole said. Department of Revenue Director David Harris was copied on the Municipal League letter. In an emailed statement, a spokesperson said the department “is working to ensure successful implementation and rollout of the Cannabis Regulation and Taxation Act and works with all stakeholders to that end.” “I think what’s happening right now is the multiple stakeholders are doing a deeper review of the law now that it’s been set, and they’re raising some questions that I think we can address through a trailer bill, providing some clarity,” Barickman said. Steans added the recreational marijuana statute created large policy changes and “lots of different viewpoints” need to be considered. In an emailed statement, Jordan Abudayyeh, Pritzker’s press secretary, seemed to indicate the governor is open to a trailer bill. The administration, she said, “is focused on ensuring the successful implementation” of the law. “Multiple state agencies are engaged in these efforts as we move forward creating one of the most equity centric industries in the country,” Abudayyeh said. “The Pritzker administration stands ready and willing to continue working to ensure Illinois has a cannabis industry that other states can look to as a model for equity and success.”)
