WASHINGTON POST
— OUTRAGEOUS: The House just passed its big tax bill. Here’s what is in it. – Heather Long
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2017/11/16/the-house-is-voting-on-its-tax-bill-thursday-heres-what-is-in-it/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Say goodbye to most deductions. Almost all itemized deductions are going away, except for three. The final House bill keeps the deductions for charitable donations, property taxes up to $10,000 a year and the mortgage interest deduction. The mortgage interest deduction would be capped at $500,000 for mortgages (down from $1 million now). About 30 percent of filers itemize. Most of the people who itemize claim the state and local tax deduction (SALT) where they deduct their state and local sales, income and property taxes. Under the House bill, only the property deduction would remain. This hurts people living in high-tax (and often blue) states like New Jersey, New York and California. Several GOP representatives from these states plan to vote no on the bill in protest. The adoption credit stays. The 401(k) exemption stays. But .?.?.Say goodbye to the tax credits for plug-in motor vehicles. It gets repealed in 2018. Say goodbye to the deduction for medical expenses. It goes away in 2018. Say goodbye to being able to write off the costs of your tax preparer. That goes away in 2018. Say goodbye to the deduction for moving expenses. It goes away in 2018, except for members of the military. Say goodbye to most tax benefits for college. At the moment, low and middle income Americans can deduct up to $2,500 a year in student loan interest. That benefit would go away in 2018. In addition, grad students who get tuition waivers because they teach or do research would now have to pay income tax on the waiver, a big change. For students currently in school, the American Opportunity Tax Credit would remain, which allows a $2,000 credit for higher education expenses. Say goodbye to the deduction for theft or loss of valuables. Right now people can write a lot of their losses off on their taxes, but that would be gone in 2018. The one exemption is losses for a natural disaster such as Hurricane Harvey. Those would stay.)

— Primary challenger Mickey Straub and Supreme Court justice James Heiple – Rick Pearson
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-jb-pritzker-tax-returns-20171115-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Mickey Straub, the village president of Burr Ridge, says he’s challenging House Republican leader Jim Durkin of Western Springs in the March primary. And when you contemplate a primary bid against a sitting legislative leader, things you wrote in the past can quickly come bubbling back up. Take Straub’s May 1997 letter to the editor in the suburban Daily Herald. At the time, then-Illinois Supreme Court Justice James Heiple stood accused of abusing his position to get out of traffic stops. . .Straub’s candidacy is getting some unlikely support from the political arm of International Union of Operating Engineers Local 150. Durkin’s camp is a aware of the union’s actions, a result of the House GOP leader keeping his caucus from backing an override of legislation vetoed by Gov. Rauner that would have banned municipalities from enacting local “right-to-work” ordinances. Though many of Rauner’s vetoes were overridden amid Republican pique with the governor among the GOP’s rank-and-file, Rauner and Durkin had made upholding the “right-to-work” ban a priority. Straub is being backed by the political operation of talk show host and failed 2010 GOP governor primary candidate Dan Proft. Proft also is backing state Rep. Jeanne Ives, who is positioning herself as a challenger to Rauner in the Republican primary for governor. Ives has been no fan of unions. A union official, who was not authorized to speak publicly, said Local 150’s support of Straub does not include backing Ives.)

http://dailycaller.com/2017/11/14/trump-effect-crushes-local-elections/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Democrats made substantial progress in November, reclaiming numerous state and local government seats long held by Republicans. This phenomenon is due largely to an unprecedented level of enthusiasm among Democratic voters eager to voice to their opposition to President Donald Trump, according to a pair of local candidates, who witnessed the effect firsthand. The incendiary nature of national politics in the Trump era trickled down to the local level in Fairfield, Conn., where Democrats routed their opponents, garnering a 23 to 17 majority on the Representative Town Meeting (RTM), a hold over term from the days of early New England government that translates to town council.)

WASHINGTON FREE BEACON
— Chicago’s Rahm Emanuel Is Latest Gender Pay Gap Hypocrite, Says New Report Nearly all of top Chicago salaries went to men in Emanuel’s fifth year as mayor – Brent Scher (DIERSEN: What does Andrzejewski have to say about Charles Bowsher who had great success at GAO during the 1980s and 1990s a) hiring, retaining, and promoting Democrats, women, minorities, and younger people and b) making way for them by wasting the careers of and by getting rid of GAO employees who were Republican, male, White, older, and/or non-veteran? Andrzejewski could use me as an example. My Democrat GAO superiors forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take an $18,847 pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980.)
http://freebeacon.com/politics/chicagos-rahm-emanuel-is-latest-gender-pay-gap-hypocrite-says-new-report/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The data compiled by Open the Books show Emanuel has failed to close the gender pay gap on his own payroll, where just 12 of the top 100 salaries for city employees in 2016 were for women. “In Rahm Emanuel’s City of Chicago, just 12 females made the list of the top 100 most highly compensated employees last year,” explains Adam Andrzejewski, who runs Open the Books out of Chicago. Andrzejewski was critical of Emanuel’s decision to issue mayoral proclamations such as the one from April before he rectifies the disparities he himself controls. “Mayor Emanuel has serious gender gap issues in budgets he manages yet he supported rallies on Equal Pay Day and sent out mayoral proclamations lamenting, ‘women continue to suffer the consequences of unequal pay,’” Andrzejewski said. “Perhaps he should rectify the disparities in his own payroll first.” Open the Books’s analysis of Chicago was done during a larger study that compiled salary figures from the 25 largest federal agencies, congressional offices, and the White House. It also analyzed the five most populous states—California, Texas, Florida, New York, and Illinois. The highest salary in Chicago went to aviation commissioner Ginger Evans, a woman who brought in $400,000 in 2016. But the next 14 best-compensated employees were all men. The amount of money brought in by the highest paid men dwarfed the amount paid to women. “The 88 top-earning males made $17.5 million while the females earned $2.5 million,” Andrzejewski found. Andrzejewski’s study found that gender pay disparities were common at all levels of government and in the offices of politicians from both sides of the aisle. He suggests that politicians should stop directing criticism at the private sector and address the inequality that exists in their own show. “More than 50 years after American women began entering the workforce in droves during the feminist movement of the 1960s, allegations of gender inequality in the workplace still make the news,” Andrzejewski said. “Typically, the story stars a politician castigating the private sector. “Our study shows that government is one of the worst offenders when it comes to the gender gap. Perhaps it’s time an army of ‘fearless girls’ stormed government and demanded results, not rhetoric, from our politicians.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: “There’s this widespread disbelief among Republicans, as there is among Democrats and independents, that tax cuts for employers will redound to their pockets books,” said Jon Cohen, vice president of survey research for SurveyMonkey. Americans’ views of the tax plan in general are more divided. The Times survey, which was conducted in early November, found that 52 percent of respondents said they disapproved of the plan, compared with 44 percent who said they supported it. (The survey did not distinguish between the House and Senate versions of the plan.) That is generally in line with other polls, although some have put support for the plan significantly lower. In general, opinions of the Republican plan split predictably along partisan lines. More than 80 percent of Republicans said they supported the plan, and more than 80 percent of Democrats said they opposed it. Most Republicans likewise said they believed that they would benefit personally from the plan, while few Democrats believed the same.)

http://abc7chicago.com/politics/bears-ownership-gets-involved-in-illinois-governors-race/2648141/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: As Gov. Rauner was on the second day of his “Our Home. Our Fight” statewide tour, there was word that his potential primary opponent, State Representative Jeanne Ives has secured the support of Chicago Bears family matriarch Virginia McCaskey. In a flyer advertising a fundraiser next Monday, Ives lists McCaskey as a $10,000 table host.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: As for the Republican primary race, state Rep. Jeanne Ives has a fundraiser next week, and one of the hosts is Chicago Bears owner Virginia McCaskey. Meanwhile, incumbent first term GOP Gov. Bruce Rauner is on a downstate campaign swing, with reaching out to veterans at the top of his agenda. “This is a time we can show how much we love our veterans and our men and women in uniform, our active duty officers,” Rauner said Tuesday, adding, “This is a time to say thank you.”)

Members of Group A typically take the standard deduction and are renters, younger, do not have major medical or dental expenses, and are Democrats. Members of Group B  typically itemize their deductions and are  homeowners, older, have major medical and/or dental expenses, and are Republicans.)

— Joe Biden is too old for the presidency, and he’s not alone – Steve Chapman (DIERSEN: What is your position on age discrimination? I have always opposed it. My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupe have always promoted age discrimination. They stress that the federal government wastes the careers of and gets rid of its non-veteran White male employees who do not make GS-13 (currently $94,610) by age 25, GS-14 (currently $111,801) by age 30, GS-15 (currently $131,508) by age 35, and Senior Executive Service (currently $161,900) by age 40.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/chapman/ct-joe-biden-2020-old-20171114-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The next presidential election is not for three years, but it’s not too early to conclude that some people should not be in it. Former Vice President Joe Biden is one of them. Sens. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren ought to excuse themselves. President Donald Trump should settle for one term, if he lasts that long. And while I’m at it, George H.W. Bush would be prudent not to seek that second term he was denied in 1992. What these people have in common is that they have passed their presidential sell date. Biden would be 78 on Inauguration Day in 2021. Sanders would be 79 and Warren 71. Trump, the oldest man ever elected president, would be 74. There are plenty of jobs that can be done well by people of advanced age. The presidency is not one of them.)

According to this article, more than 50 percent of the taxpayers in Roskam’s 6th Congressional District deduct state and local taxes (SALT). Are you and your spouse among them? My wife and I are. If you are, how much were your itemized deductions last year? For the Diersens, they were $30,890 — $13,859 medical and dental expenses, $14,303 SALT ($12,835 real estate tax and $1,468 income tax), and $2,728 charitable contributions. Last year, my 87-year-old aunt’s medical deductions were $74,050. One should expect that every year, the higher that your real estate taxes and medical expenses will be. What do you say to my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes who demonize, denigrate, and condemn a) old people like me and b) those like my wife and I who itemize our deductions?)
http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20171110/OPINION/171119997
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Last week, House Republicans released the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which would add more than $1.5 trillion to the federal deficit and gives massive tax cuts to large corporations and the wealthy, paid for on the backs of working families in Illinois and across the country. Using a partisan legislative process, the House Republicans’ plan lowers the rate at which corporate profits—currently at record highs—are taxed, while eliminating or restricting numerous deductions and tax benefits used by middle-income families to reduce their tax bills. Along with eliminating vital tax benefits such as the medical expense deduction and the student loan interest deduction, House Republicans gut the deduction for state and local taxes, or SALT, which 44 million Americans nationwide use to avoid being doubled taxed on their hard-earned income. Illinois has the fifth-highest number of taxpayers who benefit from this deduction, with 85 percent of them making under $200,000 per year. Nearly 2 million Illinoisans—roughly one-third of all taxpayers in the state— claim an average deduction of $12,500. Yesterday, Rep. Peter Roskam, a Republican from Wheaton and chairman of the House Tax Policy Committee, extolled the plan, in a piece published here, for benefiting everyone. Because the House GOP plan guts the state and local tax deduction, more than 50 percent of the taxpayers in the 6th Congressional District—represented by Roskam—could see their taxes increase if this plan became law. Out of the entire nation, Roskam’s district has the 12th-highest percentage of taxpayers benefitting from the SALT deduction. Seventy-nine percent of them earn less than $200,000. What does this mean for families? It means that a married couple with two children living in west suburban Wayne, straddling DuPage and Kane counties inside Roskam’s district, and making $50,000 to $75,000 annually would see a tax increase of about $1,100 under the House Republican tax plan. And the bad news doesn’t stop there. Many of the families our Republican colleagues claim their plan would help would actually see costs increase over time—because the provisions affecting those families are written in disappearing ink that fades over time. This means that under the House Republican plan, 20 percent of all taxpayers in Illinois would see their taxes rise by 2027—with taxes rising an average of $1,670 per taxpayer. At the same time, the richest 1 percent in Illinois would receive an average tax cut of $56,850 next year and $75,050 by 2027. With U.S. corporations earning record profits, exploding our deficit to benefit the wealthiest 1 percent of Americans is no way to provide relief to the millions of working families in Illinois who need a helping hand. Low- and middle-income Americans, whose spending accounts for two-thirds of the economic productivity in our country, should be the focus of any tax reform plan that Congress considers. Instead, the House Republican tax plan burdens middle-income Americans and the small businesses that power our economy, while lining the pocketbooks of the ultra-wealthy, including President Donald Trump’s friends and family. Illinoisans deserve better than the House Republican plan, which Roskam enthusiastically supports.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Losers People living in high-tax states such as New York and California. All state and local tax deductions (SALT) are gone in the Senate plan. Taxpayers would lose the ability to deduct their state and local property and other taxes from their federal taxes, a break used by about 44 million people (or 30 percent of tax filers.) A number of Republican House members insisted on only a partial repeal in the House bill, but the Senate has gone for a full repeal in an effort to raise more money to pay for tax cuts elsewhere.)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Democratic senators issue unusual warning – Rick Pearson

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-ald-burke-truck-terrorism-task-force-chicago-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Illinois’ two Democratic U.S. senators issued an unusual warning Thursday for residents of two suburban congressional districts represented by Republicans. The pointed notice from U.S. Sens. Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth to Republican U.S. Reps. Peter Roskam of Wheaton and Randy Hultgren of Plano came on the day the House Ways and Means Committee advanced the House GOP’s tax proposal. Roskam is a member of the powerful House committee and is its tax policy chairman. He is facing scrutiny over portions of the plan that limit mortgage and property-tax deductions and eliminate state income tax deductions. In separate notices, Durbin and Duckworth issued statements on what Roskam and Hultgren’s congressional districts stand “to lose” if Republicans are successful “in passing their tax cuts for the wealthy.” In the Roskam statement, the senators say: “A married couple with two children living in Wayne … making $50,000-$75,000 annually would see a tax increase of about $1,100 under the House Republican Tax Plan.” In the Hultgren statement, the senators say: “A single person living in Plainfield, Bolingbrook, and Aurora … making $25,000-$50,000 annually would see a tax increase of about $700 under the House Republican Tax Plan.” The senators say their information is based on analyses by several groups, some with Democratic leanings, including the Tax Policy Center, Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy, the Center for Tax and Budget Accountability, the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, the Government Finance Officers Association, the National Association of Counties, the Economic Policy Institute and the Joint Committee on Taxation. The response: For his part, Roskam issued a statement saying the effort toward changing the nation’s tax laws was the “most significant step” in 30 years. “Americans are yearning to see real tax relief and the work we’ve done on this bill respects and rewards hardworking, middle-class families in my district and across the country and allows us to grow a healthy economy and more jobs,” Roskam said.)

Political parties exist to help elect candidates who can and will defend and advance their platform. Beyond outrageously, beyond tragically, the Republican Party lets people, that this, lets Democrat plants, lets Libertarian plants, lets Green plants, and lets RINOs hold leadership positions in the party. They most commonly reject the traditional family, right to life, immigration, illegal drugs, and equal opportunity (no race or gender based preference giving) planks in the party’s platform. STATELINE
— Trump’s complicated history with Vietnam Trump avoided Vietnam draft through deferments – DAN MERICA (DIERSEN: Were you 1-A, that is, were you fit for military service? In 1966, when I was 18 years old, I was 1-A notwithstanding the fact that my eyesight could not be corrected to 20/20, that I had partial red/green color blindness, and that I had Osgood-Schlatter disease (
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osgood%E2%80%93Schlatter_disease). If I would seek a government office or a political office, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes would stress that got student draft deferments 1966-1970 while I attended UIC and NIU and a financial hardship deferment 1970-1971. They would demonize me, denigrate me, and condemn me as being a patriotic hypocrite, a coward, and even worse things.)
http://www.mystateline.com/news/politics/trumps-complicated-history-with-vietnam/854988532
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Looming over the President’s visit — which includes a stop in the Vietnamese capitol of Hanoi — is the fact that Trump received multiple deferments during the Vietnam War. He also later compared his work and social life as a real estate developer in New York to the sacrifices made by American soldiers in the distant country. The focus also comes just weeks after Republican Sen. John McCain, the most well-known Vietnam War veteran in American politics, appeared to take a jab at Trump for receiving the deferments, intimating that the President dodged the draft that swept up less affluent Americans…Trump’s deferments Trump attended the private New York Military Academy in high school, but he avoided the draft through a series of education and health deferments. After receiving four deferments due to education, Trump was diagnosed with bone spurs in his heels at the age of 22 in 1968, seven years before the Vietnam War ended. The diagnosis earned him a 1-Y medical deferment, meaning he was barred from military service in the same year that roughly 300,000 troops were enlisted into the military. Trump has defended the deferments in the past. In a 2016 interview with The New York Times, Trump said that a doctor “gave me a letter — a very strong letter — on the heels.” “Over a period of time, it healed up,” he added. And in a 2015 biography, Trump told Michael D’Antonio that the bone spurs were “not a big problem, but it was enough of a problem” that it made him unable to march long distances. Trump’s draft deferments became political issues during the 2016 election, especially after he attacked the family of a fallen solider who spoke at the Democratic National Convention. But it was the comment from McCain, a member of Trump’s own party, that seemed to deride Trump the most. McCain, in an interview with CSPAN, appeared to take a swipe at Trump when he criticized people from “the highest income level” who avoided the draft by finding a doctor who “would say that they had a bone spur.” McCain never mentions Trump by name in the interview, but the President’s deferment because of a bone spur is widely known and the President’s family was well off at the time. McCain, who said he wasn’t talking about Trump, added later that he didn’t believe Trump was a draft dodger…His own ‘Vietnam’ Years after avoiding the draft, Trump had made light of service in the Vietnam War by comparing it to both his professional and social endeavors and by deriding those who have served. Trump, known for being a fixture in the New York tabloids at the time, agreed with Howard Stern in 1998 when the shock jock suggested that avoiding sexually transmitted diseases in New York was “your Vietnam.” “It’s Vietnam,” Trump said. “It is very dangerous. So I’m very, very careful.” Earlier in the interview, first reported by CNN’s KFile, Trump said he was “getting the Congressional Medal of Honor” because of his ability to stay alive with “screwing a lot of women.” And Trump kicked off his feud with McCain, a fight that has lasted years, but stating in 2015 that McCain was not a war hero because he was captured during the Vietnam War. “He is not a war hero,” Trump said. “He is a war hero because he was captured. I like people that weren’t captured, OK? I hate to tell you. He is a war hero because he was captured.” McCain served in the Navy until 1981, where he was famously a prisoner of war at H?a Lò Prison. McCain declined early release during his over five years in captivity, a benefit that would have been granted to him because his father was an admiral in the Navy.)

November 9 Morning Edition

CRAIN’S CHICAGO BUSINESS
— The House tax plan benefits everyone – PETER ROSKAM  (DIERSEN: How old are you? I am 69. Do you itemize your deductions? If so, how much were your itemized deductions last year? For the Diersens, they were $30,890 — $13,859 medical and dental expenses, $14,303 real estate and state income taxes, and $2,728 charitable contributions. Last year, my 87-year-old aunt’s medical deductions were $74,050. One should expect that every year that you are older, the higher that your medical expenses will be. What do you say to my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes who demonize, denigrate, and condemn a) old people like me and b) those like my wife and I who itemize our deductions?)
http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20171109/OPINION/171109872
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Some have said that this plan would eviscerate the state and local tax deduction. This is simply not true. For Americans who choose to itemize, mortgage interest, property tax deductions and charitable contribution deductions are still available to them. This bill maintains the property tax deduction (up to $10,000), the mortgage interest deduction (for a loan up to $500,000) and the charitable deduction.)
— A stark—and sickening—reminder of how far women still have to go – DESIREE VARGAS WRIGLEY (DIERSEN: Desiree Vargas Wrigley should consider working for the federal government. She would have to take a tremendous pay cut, but sexual harassment would be far less of a problem. All federal employees are required to take lots of sexual harassment training. All during the almost 30 years that I worked for the federal government 1966-1969 and 1971-1997, I saw absolutely no sexual harassment. In the federal government, women are a member of a protected class and they are given lots of preferential treatment. Unlike the federal government’s non-veteran White male employees, its female employees are not subject to its “up-or-out” policy. The federal government wastes the careers of and gets rid of its non-veteran White male employees who do not make GS-13 (currently $94,610) by age 25, GS-14 (currently $111,801) by age 30, GS-15 (currently $131,508) by age 35, and Senior Executive Service (currently $161,900) by age 40.)

My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have always hinted/implied/argued/shouted a) that instead of me, the Post Office should have hired a minority in 1966, b) that the Post Office should gotten rid of me much sooner than it did so that a minority could have my job, c) that instead of me, IRS should have hired a minority in 1971, d) that instead of me, IRS should have promoted minorities in 1972, 1973, and 1974, e) that instead of me, GAO should have hired a minority in 1980, f) that instead of me, GAO should have promoted a minority in 1986, and g) that GAO should have gotten rid of me much sooner than it did so that a minority could have my job and my preferred corner office.)

I itemized my deductions 1972-1977 and my wife and I have itemized our deductions since 1978. My critics/opponents have always wanted my wife and I to pay more federal income tax. They hint/imply/argue/shout a) that my wife and I were born with silver spoons in our mouths, b) that we have always been privileged, c) that the federal government grossly overpaid me, and d) that my federal pension and health/dental/vision insurance subsidies are too generous. — ‘Do we have the courage to be reasonable, to be kind?’ Proft describes politics as drying Illinois like a desert – Glenn Minnis (DIERSEN: What would your critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes say about you to Proft? Mine would say a) that I paid only $70,932 into the Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) but the CSRS has already paid me $1,025,596 in today’s dollars, b) that I avoided the draft, c) that the federal government grossly overpaid me, d) that I have been married since 1978, e) that my wife has always had a good job, f) that I have not given Proft any money, g) that some/many might not pay $50/year for his newspapers because they get GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails free each and every morning and evening and without any advertising, h) etc.)
https://chicagocitywire.com/stories/511260887-do-we-have-the-courage-to-be-reasonable-to-be-kind-proft-describes-politics-as-drying-illinois-like-a-desert
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Proft discussed how 85 percent of families in Illinois say the state is on the wrong track and how half of them readily admit they’d rather be somewhere else. “If you think we can have public-sector employees pay $140,000 into the pension system and get $2 million back; if you think we have a revenue problem and not a spending problem; and if you think 32 years of the last 34 of Mike Madigan’s speakership is not a sufficient probationary period, then this speech is for you,” he said. Proft said the inconsistencies in the world of Illinois politics are glaring. “Every politician in both parties says, ‘I’m going to Springfield to provide state services because that’s what a civilized society does,’ but how is it until recently we were 51st out of 50 states, behind the District of Columbia, in providing services to people with developmental, intellectual disabilities,” he said. Adding insult to injury, Proft said a sizable portion of the state’s more than $16 billion in unpaid debt is owed to social services providers. Proft argued that Madigan has been able to control everything as long as he has because Republicans haven’t always fought the way they need to. “The reason Madigan has enjoyed his run is not because he’s genius: It is because the Republican Party is feckless, weak and surrenders,” he said. State poltics has become so divisive that it is tearing apart families, Proft contended. “Millennials are leading the exodus from this state,” he said. “The problem is, for the biggest investment middle-income families make in their lives — their homes — it’s not possible to get a rate of return on. We talk about businesses leaving, people leaving; people are leaving to go to states that keep their promises to families that have a member with developmental disabilities.” To Proft, that’s a clear indication it’s time state leaders change their focus. “We should be having a conversation about keeping our promises,” he said. “Instead of only talking about being No. 1 in job creation, maybe we should focus on being No. 1 in providing services that are a mirror of our humanity. We have become an unkind state, a barbaric state.” Proft sees another jarring example of that in the way Ford Heights, one of the state’s poorest communities, now boasts some of the highest property taxes. “This state is becoming a home equity desert, and it’s forcing people to leave and breaking up families,” he said.)

On September 16, 1996, I presented oral arguments to Chief Judge Posner and to Circuit Court Judges Coffey and Kanne. On March 31, 1997, the Appellate Court agreed with me and ruled that DOT lacked authority to grant exemptions to the FOA, and that therefore, its exemption for cars over 10 years old was invalid.)

— FRONT PAGE TOP OF FOLD: Experts fear consequences of legalized marijuana in drivers here – Marni Pyke (DIERSEN: Who works against you and why? Those who work against me a) use pot, b) want to use pot legally, c) want governments to have tax revenue from the sale of pot, d) want to make money selling pot, and/or e) want to destroy Wheaton, Milton Township, DuPage County, Illinois, and America. )
http://www.dailyherald.com/news/20171107/experts-fear-consequences-of-legalized-marijuana-in-drivers-here
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Legalizing marijuana use in Illinois won’t only lead to more vehicle crashes, but it will hamstring police and prosecutors by making arrests problematic, transportation experts said Tuesday at a AAA forum. Illinois has allowed medical marijuana since 2014, and legislation is pending in the General Assembly to permit the general use and sale of up to one ounce for people 21 and older. “We finally made so much headway with reducing fatal alcohol-related car crashes, and now this comes along and blows it out of the water,” Carol Stream Deputy Police Chief John Jungers said at the Oak Brook conference. “My concern is about putting a law in place without being prepared for the repercussions.” AAA has studied the impact of legalization in Washington state and found marijuana use and fatal crashes are increasing. The portion of drivers in fatal crashes who recently used marijuana spiked to 17 percent from 8 percent from 2013 to 2014, the motorist advocacy group reported. “Illinois is not ready for this,” Illinois Traffic Safety Resource Prosecutor Jennifer Cifaldi said, adding her greatest fear was “an increase in traffic fatalities.” Advocates for legalization say changing the law would take marijuana out of the hands of drug dealers, reduce related crimes and allow people to buy a legitimate product from regulated and licensed businesses. A majority of Democratic gubernatorial candidates either support legalization or want a referendum on the issue. It’s been estimated the move could generate $350 million to $700 million to boost Illinois’ budget. Authorities at the conference said it’s difficult to get convictions for driving under the influence of cannabis because the state’s crime lab does not conduct that test. Illinois law now prohibits driving with 5 or more nanograms of tetrahydrocannabinol or THC in a person’s system. THC is the active ingredient in marijuana that can affect a person’s brain and behavior. Colorado Traffic Safety Resource Prosecutor Jennifer Knudsen said many marijuana products, including gummy bears, drinks and cookies, have become available since that state legalized cannabis. Normalizing marijuana makes it difficult for Colorado police to make judgments on whether a person is impaired during traffic stops. And in court, “when we get our juries, many of them voted for it (legalization),” she said. Alcohol use has been studied for decades, Jungers said, but the effect of marijuana on drivers is relatively unknown. “It affects people differently. … There’s not enough science to write a law,” he said. “It’s something that we’re hoping the legislature takes a really close look at,” AAA spokeswoman Beth Mosher said. “There are other issues than whether or not this is good financially for Illinois.” Cifaldi thinks legalization isn’t a matter of if but of when. “It’s going to happen,” she said.)

— ROSANNA PULIDO LETTER TO THE SPRINGFIELD STATE JOURNAL REGISTER EDITOR: I am taking time out of my busy day to tell your readers and our Mayor, how encouraged I am by Our Mayor Jim Langfelder and his courage to do the right thing for the hardworking people and Taxpayers of Springfield Illinois. I have lived in Springfield Illinois 2 1/2 years. When I came here, I got a job, payed taxes and became a responsible, involved citizen. I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that I was Welcomed to Springfield Illinois because of my responsible actions! This Welcoming City Resolution had everything upside down. Springfield Illinois welcomed me because I become a responsible working active adult. That’s how I showed my fellow citizens that I cared for them and they welcomed me. Our Courageous Mayor did his homework and discovered what many people have discovered. You must pull the curtain back and look behind it, who is behind this movement? No, It is not just a non-binding resolution Alderwoman DiCenso! There much more they will be pushing once we let them get their foot in the door. http://illinoisreview.typepad.com/illinoisreview/2017/11/sanctuary-cities-controversy-permeates-virginia-gubernatorial-race-slops-into-il-primary.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Governor Bruce Rauner’s decision to go against the IL GOP Platform and sign into a law a measure effectively making the state of Illinois a sanctuary state launched outrage against the Republican governor earlier this year. At the urging of the IL GOP’s conservative base, Ives has stepped forward to mount a challenge against Rauner focusing on his actions promoting sanctuary cities and taxpayer-funded abortion. Ives has an uphill battle in her bid to oust Rauner with a fraction of the funds available that Rauner has contributed to his own campaign and those of other Rauner sympathizers.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Those of us living in Western democracies keep hearing it over and over again from our politicians: To compete economically, we must submit to mass immigration. It’s long past time to dispel this destructive myth. The mass immigration con is typically peddled for the same reason that you need an accountant to help do your taxes. By tying the issue to economics, politicians are trying to make it too complex for laypeople to know when they’re being scammed. While they’re exploiting your human decency with their spiel about the greater economic good, these government pickpockets are reaching into your trousers (or into your bank account) for more cash. Hey, man, a gubmint’s gotta eat! U.S. President Donald Trump isn’t buying it, though. I have yet to hear Trump proclaim that the recipe for American greatness is more immigration. The newly empowered GOP, united under support for the “Contract with America” — a 10-point legislative plan to cut federal taxes, balance the budget and dismantle a host of welfare programs enacted and expanded during the decades of Democratic rule. The Republicans’ success at the polls reflected a decision to run their House races on this nationwide agenda. It marked the first time since 1918 that a congressional election had been organized by the party out of power to be run broadly on a national level. The Republicans named Rep. Newt Gingrich of Georgia as speaker of the House, replacing Rep. Tom Foley of Washington, one of the incumbents defeated in the 54-seat swing from Democrats to Republicans. — Tax Tips: Deducting education costs – Barry Dolowich (DIERSEN: The proposed tax plan targets those who itemize their deductions. Government should encourage education and homeownership. I have itemized my deductions since 1972 and my wife and I have itemized our deductions ever since we got married in 1978. Being able to pay less federal income tax by deducting educational expenses encouraged me to take job-related graduate a) business courses at Loyola 1972-1976, b) accounting courses at DePaul 1976-1980, c) internal auditing courses at Roosevelt 1980-1981, and d) finance courses at IIT 1992-1997.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The following conditions must be met in order to deduct your education costs: You must be employed. You already meet the minimum education requirements of your job. The course or courses do not lead to qualification for a new profession or business. The course or courses maintain or improve your job or professional skills, or are required by your employer or by law. If your courses meet the above requirements, you may deduct the following education costs on your Schedule A subject to the 2 percent adjusted gross income floor: Tuition, textbooks, fees, equipment, and other materials or supplies required by the courses. Local transportation going from your job directly to school. Travel to and from a school away from home, and lodging and 50 percent of meals while at school away from home.)

— The GOP tax plan gives Americans less incentive to be charitable – Dan Kopf (DIERSEN: How old are you? I am 69. Do you itemize you deductions? If so, how much were your itemized deductions last year? For the Diersens, they were $30,890 — $13,859 medical and dental expenses, $14,303 real estate and state income taxes, and $2,728 gifts to charities. My 87-year-old aunt’s medical deductions were $74,050. What do you say to those who demonize, denigrate, and condemn a) older people and b) those who itemize their deductions?)
