These workplaces are willing to overlook employment gaps and some brushes with police that accompany drug use. They encourage open discussion of addiction in the workplace to reduce stigma. Shows No Signs of Course Correction – Jonathan Martin https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/02/us/politics/republicans-midterms-house-losses.html (FROM THE ARTICLE: With a brutal finality, the extent of the Republicans’ collapse in the House came into focus last week as more races slipped away from them and their losses neared 40 seats. Yet nearly a month after the election, there has been little self-examination among Republicans about why a midterm that had seemed at least competitive became a rout. President Trump has brushed aside questions about the loss of the chamber entirely, ridiculing losing incumbents by name, while continuing to demand Congress fund a border wall despite his party losing many of their most diverse districts. Unlike their Democratic counterparts, Republicans swiftly elevated their existing slate of leaders with little debate, signaling a continuation of their existing political strategy. And neither Speaker Paul D. Ryan nor Representative Kevin McCarthy, the incoming minority leader, have stepped forward to confront why the party’s once-loyal base of suburban supporters abandoned it — and what can be done to win them back.)

— Wheaton College students claim black pro-lifer’s talk made people of color feel ‘unsafe’ – Dorothy Cummings McLean https://www.lifesitenews.com/news/christian-college-students-claim-black-pro-lifers-talk-made-people-of-color (FROM THE ARTICLE: Three student officials at a Christian college have alleged that an African-American speaker made other people of color feel “unheard, underrepresented, and unsafe” with his pro-life talk. Ryan Bomberger of the Radiance Foundation gave a presentation entitled “Black Lives Matter In and Out of the Womb” at the evangelical Wheaton College on November 14. He was the guest of the Wheaton College Republicans. Bomberger’s talk touched on the “hypocrisy” of the BLM leadership in announcing its solidarity with Planned Parenthood, the “leading killer of black lives.” In response to Bomberger’s interactive talk, Lauren Rowley, Wheaton’s student body president, Tyler Waaler, the student body vice-president, and Sammy Shields, the “EVP” of the college’s Community Diversity, signed an email directed to the entire college claiming that Bomberger’s talk distressed “many” people of color. “As many of you know, a special interest club hosted an event on Wednesday night titled, ‘Black Lives Matter: In and Outside the Womb.’ The speaker of this event, Ryan Bomberger, made several comments at the event that deeply troubled members of our community. His comments, surrounding the topic of race, made many students, staff, and faculty of color feel unheard, underrepresented, and unsafe on our campus,” they wrote. Without supplying any examples, Rowley, Waaler, and Shields called Bomberger’s opinions “offensive rhetoric” and suggested that they “compromised” the college’s mission. “As Student Government, we are committed to the College’s mission to promoting student programming that ‘pursues unity, embraces ethnic diversity, and practices racial reconciliation so that it will contribute to the education of whole persons,’ and therefore, felt it necessary to respond to the offensive rhetoric from the speaker at this event that compromised this mission,” they stated. Bomberger, who is a biracial African American conceived in rape and then raised in a mixed-race family, responded indignantly to the allegations, saying that Rowley, Waaler, and Shields had demonized him. He said also that many students had told him that out of the three, only Shields had attended his talk. “I would think it would be against the college’s mission to intentionally mislead students,” Bomberger wrote in response to the student leaders’ backlash against him. He noted that the student leaders had not provided any evidence for what they allege. “As typical with ‘progressivism’ one only needs to make the claim of offense without allowing people to examine the alleged ‘offense.’ The Dean of Student Engagement, Steve Ivester…praised me for the way in which I approached such heavy issues. But it seems that only some people’s opinions matter,” Bomberger wrote.)

Facing protests from civil rights leaders, lawmakers from both parties and members of his Cabinet, Mr. Bush this morning moved to end the uproar caused when the White House Counsel, C. Boyden Gray, circulated a draft of a directive Wednesday night that would have ended the use of racial preferences and quotas in Federal Government hiring. That draft gave rise to reports that the President would order all Federal agencies today to phase out the use of racial preferences and quotas in hiring to underscore his opposition to affirmative action. Some political opponents and those who have voiced doubt about his commitment to civil rights suggested that Mr. Bush was trying to undo by executive action what he could not achieve in his fight with Congress over the wording in the Civil Rights Act. Disputes Flare Anew Moving quickly to try to dispel that impression, Mr. Bush this morning had his press secretary, Marlin Fitzwater, say that Mr. Gray had acted without his knowledge, and the White House called civil rights leaders who had been invited to the signing ceremony to assure them that the affirmative action regulations dating from 1965 were not being wiped out. Still, some of his critics raised doubts about whether Mr. Bush really intended to abandon Mr. Gray’s effort. And late in the day, controversy erupted again over another aspect of the formal signing statement that was made public after Mr. Bush signed the bill at a ceremony in the Rose Garden. Republican and Democratic lawmakers alike criticized a passage in the statement in which Mr. Bush endorsed a hotly debated interpretation of certain provisions of the new anti-discrimination law that gives employers the broadest discretion in citing “business necessity” to defend policies that exclude blacks, women and other minority groups from hiring. In his speech, which amounted to a highly unusual repudiation of a close aide and followed a chaotic overnight review of the proposed changes in Federal hiring practices, the President cast aside Mr. Gray’s language on affirmative action.) — DIERSEN HEADLINE: Constructively, an anti-Trump argues that America surrender to Mexico and to surrender the rest of the foreign countries. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/01/opinion/sunday/border-detention-tear-gas-migrants.html

Instead, the “suburban problem” appears to be limousine liberalism gone mainstream. In the 1970s, limousine liberals forced busing while sending their own kids to tony private schools. They willingly paid high taxes that crippled small business, among other things. Today’s limousine liberals have different policies, but signal their membership with similar hypocrisies. They define themselves by “values” more than by wealth, though they are mostly well off or, at least, better off than most. They bemoan the racism and other phobias in America while pricing the middle class and minorities out of their school districts; they drive SUVs; heat and air condition large mansions while worrying about global warming; they favor amnesty and open borders, benefit from its cheap labor, yet defer the costs elsewhere; they live family life in a pretty traditional way, but they are happy to embrace policies and mores that unwind the family for the less fortunate. Despite high levels of church attendance for themselves and their neighborhood friends, they worry that faithful Christians are sources of misogyny, homophobia, and patriarchal power, and they vote to undermine the role of faith in politics accordingly.)

— BRINKMAN: THE RISE AND DECLINE OF ILLINOIS’ ONCE-DEPENDABLE DUPAGE REPUBLICAN PARTY https://www.illinoisreview.com/illinoisreview/2018/11/the-rise-and-decline-of-the-dupage-republican-party.html (FROM THE ARTICLE: When James “Pate” Philip left as DuPage party chair in 2003 he left it with half a million dollars. Without their long time leader the DuPage GOP quickly fragmented into the nine individual township organizations who learned to fend for themselves. The money quickly dwindled and was never replenished. Neither were these organizations created equal in their ability or resources to fend for themselves. The lasting coup of the 2010 redistricting map is that it took those districts that followed GOP organizational lines and smashed them up. Local Republican organizations long used to having one representative and one senator now suddenly had five or six in some cases. To be required to focus on too much is to focus on nothing at all. This has undone local efforts to bolster candidates. Tea Parties admirably tried to pick up some of this slack as have larger more well-heeled groups like that of Dan Proft. Tactical victories partially explain the decline, but not the broader trends. While the township organizations helped slow the decline they were not the essential force in DuPage’s rise to preeminence. How then was the county so effective at its peak? Was it all just demographics as some would argue, or purely leadership? Surely both played a role, however one feature absent over the decline of the DuPage party was its massive and systematic outreach during its peak. The county GOP sent a quarterly newsletter to each and every voter. A substantial portion of what was raised every year and at massive events (like the one where Nancy Louise met Pate) went to their distribution. These efforts helped to educate all voters and especially newer ones to see why conservative governance was essential first at the local level, then at the state level. Before they knew it, they had become reliable Republican voters!)

Not only are more people on the left than ever before, the left is further left than it’s ever been. This radical brand of progressivism has come to be known as “leftism”—an extreme yet increasingly dominant segment of the political spectrum. At the same time, America has grown more secular. According to Pew, “religious nones” are rapidly growing in number. These “nones” are most concentrated among millennials: 36% of millennials are religiously unaffiliated. Millennials happen to also be America’s most politically progressive generation. This probably isn’t a coincidence, especially since the same trends have occurred in a similar way in other parts of the world, such as Europe. While correlation doesn’t prove causation, politics and religion are so closely related that it’s hard to believe the simultaneous popularization of extreme leftism and secularism is insignificant.)

The blowup coincided with the agency’s rollout of new ethics procedures prepared in response to concerns about potential favoritism regarding contracts and hiring. “The tollway is a well-run, transparent organization, but we can always look for better ways and better practices,” Chairman Robert Schillerstrom said. However, Director Joseph Gomez criticized the ethics report for failing to address “what might be considered political firings.” Gomez said high-ranking managers in communications and human resources were terminated this year and told “the toll road was headed in a different direction.” “I don’t find that a good reason to fire senior members of the toll road staff,” Gomez said. “What was the ‘new direction’ at the tollway?” Gorman told Gomez, “If you’re inferring that I’m a woman and can’t handle it, I don’t appreciate it and that’s not the case.” “I don’t believe in firing people. They fire themselves,” she said. And when one department head left this spring, “I believe the building was in (unison) in singing, ‘Ding, dong, the witch is dead,'” Gorman said. At that point, Senior Assistant Attorney General Robert Lane admonished Gorman and board members that personnel discussions should occur in executive session. “I am so sorry you would think that anybody is disparaging you because of being a female,” Gomez told Gorman. “There are no political firings,” Schillerstrom clarified, adding personnel issues are handled by tollway executives, not board members.)

In my youth, Park Forest was pleasantly middle-class — a solid community of well-kept lawns, strong churches, and active sports. Unfortunately for my hometown, times have been tough over the years, reflected by a jobless rate about twice the national one and a poverty rate 43 percent higher than the state of Illinois average. As a consequence, Park Forest has lost almost a third of its peak population of 30,000 since the 1970s. But like many such struggling communities, one class of people has found a way to prosper: public employees. Recently, Fox affiliate Channel 32 and Open the Books detailed the exorbitant pay package for part-time interim school Superintendent Joyce Carmine. She retired in 2017 making $398,000 annually, the highest-paid superintendent in Illinois, in a community where the median household income is $44,000. She will receive, courtesy of taxpayers, a pension of just under $300,000 for the rest of her life. Adding insult to injury, the school district hired this retiree back as a consultant at the rate of $1,200 per day for a total of 100 days, bringing her pay this year to $419,000 total for part-time work. Given the modest $75,000 median home price in Park Forest, her salary equates to 5.5 home purchases…per year.)

Three candidates — incumbent Suzanne Fitch and newcomers Ron Almiron and Erica Bray-Parker — will square off for two available at-large council seats.
