HERALD NEWS
— OUTSTANDING: Bolingbrook board was blunt — no cannabis businesses in village
– ALEX ORTIZ https://www.theherald-news.com/2019/08/14/bolingbrook-board-was-blunt-no-cannabis-businesses-in-village/av0vrpj/ (FROM THE ARTICLE: The
village of Bolingbrook Board of Trustees voted Tuesday night to prohibit
cannabis business establishments within its boundaries. The trustees voted 5-1
in favor of the prohibition. Bolingbrook Mayor Roger Claar said he was in favor
of prohibiting cannabis businesses in the village and decried how the state
government passed the legislation to legalize it. “I philosophically have
a real problem with governments which have turned to drugs and gambling to
balance their budgets,” he said. “That’s what the state’s come
to.” The village’s ordinance cited the state’s Cannabis Regulation and Tax
Act, which allows municipalities to prohibit adult-use cannabis business
establishments. Ken Teppel, the village’s public safety director, spoke about
the Bolingbrook Police Department’s opposition to allowing cannabis businesses
in town. He also talked about the challenges posed to police departments in
other states that have already legalized recreational cannabis use, like
Colorado. For example, Teppel said cannabis businesses have been targets for
theft because they deal solely in cash to be in compliance with federal banking
laws. He added that, for police, it’s more difficult to investigate such crimes
without a paper trail. He also talked about other problems like black markets
developing around legal dispensaries, the high potency of the drug nowadays,
potential dangers with flammable materials used to grow the plant, and trying
to develop a test for impaired drivers who have used the drug. During public
comments, the opinions among the handful of residents who spoke were mixed. Trustee
Bob Jaskiewicz was the only “no” vote. He said it was a mistake to
not have a public hearing before holding a vote on the prohibition. “I
want us to consider other points as to why a dispensary would be a good
thing,” Jaskiewicz said. Claar told Jaskiewicz to take up the issue with
state legislators because, unlike other states, which held a referendum,
Illinois “chose to ignore the public” and didn’t ask voters. Claar
said lawmakers were already discussing a possible trailer bill to clarify and
fix issues with the initial law that passed. The mayor also made sure to
emphasize that the ordinance was only prohibiting commercial businesses selling
cannabis and not recreational use of the drug. Trustee Mary Alexander Basta
made the point that the ordinance could be revised in the future. Recreational
cannabis use and possession will be legal in Illinois starting Jan. 1, 2020.)

recreational marijuana should be sold in Glen Ellyn? – Lisa Marie Farver
(DIERSEN: The Milton Township Republican Central Committee (MTRCC) should pass
a resolution against the sale of pot in Milton Township and in the rest of
DuPage County like it passed a resolution against video gambling in 2009.
Republican Precinct Committeemen in Glen Ellyn should attend Glen Ellyn’s
meeting on August 19 and Republican Precinct Committeemen in Wheaton should
attend Wheaton’s meeting on August 26. They should call for banning the sale of
pot in their municipalities. Past and present MTRCC officers should attend the
aforesaid meetings and call for banning the sale of pot. At previous Wheaton
City Council meetings, Bob Cherry, B. J. Slinger, Tim Whelan, and I have called
for Wheaton to ban the sale of pot. At previous DuPage County Board meetings,
Dick Furstenau and I have called for DuPage County to ban the sale of pot in

GOPUSA ILLINOIS
— All politics is local. It should be extremely important to you who represents
you in your municipality’s government. Residents of Wheaton’s West District
have been represented in Wheaton’s government by Todd Scalzo for the last 10
years, but Scalzo has resigned.
It would be great if the Milton Township Republican Central
Committee (MTRCC) would host a candidate forum for the seven Republican
candidates who are seeking appointment to fill Wheaton’s West District City
Council vacancy.
Those seven candidates are Edward Ahern, Jeffery Antonelli, Angela
Blatner, Dave Diersen, Nancy Harding, Mark Kmiecik, and Robert McNeily.
Hopefully, all of the aforesaid seven candidates will a) attend
MTRCC’s 7:00 PM Wednesday August 14, 2019 meeting at the Holiday Inn in Carol
Stream, b) announce their candidacies, c) and seek the support of the eighteen
Republican Precinct Committeemen who represent Wheaton’s West District.
Those eighteen Precinct Committeemen are Joseph Caruso, Dave
Diersen, Thomas Elsner, Arthur Grant, Ralph Hinkle, Marty Keller, John
Kocinski, Robert Krzyzewski, Michael Hinsdale, Jae Kwon, Robert Larsen, Connor
McCarthy, Robert McNeily, Ronald Menna, Elizabeth Tatro, James Ryan, Mark
Thomas, and Herbert Wehling.
Hopefully, MTRCC will gather relevant information about the
aforesaid seven candidates and provide that information to the aforesaid
eighteen Precinct Committeemen.
The goal of the candidate forum and providing information on the
candidates is to help the aforesaid eighteen Precinct Committeemen recommend to
Wheaton’s City Council the best possible candidate to be appointed to fill the
Wheaton West District City Council vacancy.
Many Republican candidates, elected officials, and party leaders
routinely attend MTRCC meetings. I hope that the following will attend MTRCC’s
August 14 meeting and a candidate forum if one is held: a) 6th Congressional
District candidates Jeanne Ives and Evelyn Sanguinetti; b) DuPage County
Recorder candidates Ron Almiron and Babette Holder; c) Wheaton’s mayor and City
Council members; d) Illinois officials including Amy Grant; e) DuPage County
officials including Robert Berlin, Fred Bucholz, Daniel Cronin, Pete DiCianni,
Grant Eckhoff, Timothy Elliott, Robert Grogan, Gwen Henry, Richard Jorgensen,
Christopher Kachiroubas, Robert Larsen, Paula McGowen, James Mendrick, Al
Murphy, Sean Noonan, Jeffrey Redick, Darlene Ruscitti, Timothy Whelan, and Jim
Zay; f) Milton Township officials including Sal Falbo, Chris Heidorn, Gail
Hinkle, Marty Keller, Chris LeVan, Gary Muehlfelt, David Molitor, John Monino,
and Yada Nathwani; g) Wheaton Park District officials including Michael Benard;
h) School District 200 officials; and i) College of DuPage officials including
Annette Corrigan, Christine Fenne, Heidi Holan, and Frank Napolitano.
It will be extremely interesting to see which of the seven
candidates are endorsed by which of the aforesaid candidates, elected
officials, and party leaders, and especially which candidates Ives and
Sanguinetti might endorse because they have served on Wheaton’s City Council. –

Beyond the fried food on a stick and the iconic Butter Cow, another big
attraction at the Iowa State Fair is the unscientific straw poll open to all
attending the fair. In 2015, Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump ran away with the
poll. Hillary Clinton won the Iowa caucus and Trump came in a very close second
behind Ted Cruz. Trump and Clinton eventually faced one another in the general
election. This week’s straw poll is a reminder that the 2020 campaign is much
further along than most people, and even many candidates, realize. The fact is
elections — and the nomination process — are won in June, July and August.

Biden and Sanders are fading, and the rest of the field is fried on a stick.)

hosted the president. “We are all in the closet,” said a boutique owner in
Southampton who fears reprisals from his customers — most of them moneyed

was an appreciation for our diligence in vetting the candidates through
questionnaires, background checks and interviews. They wanted the information

— Advice to the College-Bound from the Old, White Professor – Abraham H.
Miller https://www.americanthinker.com/articles/2019/08/advice_to_the_collegebound_from_the_old_white_professor.html (FROM THE ARTICLE:
Nearly all college experiences begin with a series of orientation sessions.
Most start with the assumption that you are the cursed offspring of a flawed
society. You come to college not to be educated but to be reeducated. You have
imbibed of racism, sexism, and homophobia. And for some outrageous amount of
tuition that will send many of you into perpetual debt, the modern-day Gletkins
of academia will purge you of these impure thoughts. The brainwashing will
begin in orientation but will not end there. If you live in a dormitory, there
will be required sensitivity sessions run by minions from the office of
residence life. These generally are graduate students who are shouldering the
intellectual rigors of a degree in education administration. The aim of these
sessions, which are reminiscent of those imposed on Soviet factory workers to
remove their “mechanistic thinking,” is to reeducate you to rid yourself of the
values your parents taught you. Many of you, irrespective of discipline, will
be compelled to complete a multicultural requirement. These courses are
compulsory because otherwise no rational person would sit through them. Your multicultural
requirement might be taken in African-American studies where, being a white
person, you will learn that only whites, by definition, can be racists and all
whites are racists. The evils of slavery will be pounded into you, even though
your ancestors probably not only didn’t own slaves, but they also came to these
shores long after slavery was abolished. Nonetheless, your skin color makes you
guilty. But invoke a stereotype about black people based on their high crime
and recidivism rate, and you will be admonished that to brush all black people
with a single brush — especially without context — is racist. To characterize
all white people as racists, however, is not a stereotype but an intellectual
incision. You will learn that there is such a thing as “true truth.” This is
the shared reality of an “oppressed” group whose common belief makes something
true. Or in the profound words of Alexandria Octavio-Cortez, you can have moral
truth without factual truth — whatever that means. In these classes, you will
never say that the trans-Atlantic slave trade was the product of Africans who
shifted the trans-Saharan slave trade westward. You will never point out that
two African potentates, King Tegesibu of Dahomey and King Alvare of the Congo,
were among the wealthiest men in the known world, having gotten rich by selling
slaves. It is not that the administration doesn’t know what goes on in these
classes, but to intercede would result in charges of racism and violation of
so-called academic freedom. If you complain, your grade will crash to the
floor. In gender studies, remember there are more than two genders. Never, ever
say you can’t change your DNA. Women are equal to men in every way, and biology
is not destiny. All apparent biological differences are really a function of
culture. After all, we live in a world where trans-women should be able to get
abortions. All genders and races should be in all the professions in proportion
to their distribution in the population is the current dogma. Any departure
from that is a function of cultural oppression. The fact that Asians
disproportionately dominate math and science classes is a function of some
cultural flaw. Only on the athletic field does pure competition exist. If you
regurgitate this view of the world, apologize for being white, and check your
white male privilege, you will do fine. Do these classes change attitudes? Yes,
but not as the intellectual Gletkins think.)

crisis in local journalism is catastrophic — and it will get worse. More than
1,300 communities across the United States are without local news coverage, and
thousands more have inadequate journalism. At the next recession, the collapse

disintegration of community journalism leads to greater polarization, lower
voter turnout, more pollution, less government accountability and less trust.
This problem is not going to be solved by a new phone app or an increase of a
few pennies in digital ad rates. It’s time to try something dramatically
different. The local media ecosystem of the future must have a much bigger role
for nonprofit media and philanthropy. We accept this reality in the worlds of
education and health care. It’s time to embrace it for local journalism. We
believe people have an obligation to support libraries and symphonies. Now they
have to support good accountability reporting.)

suburb in which I live and the neighboring suburb both have proposed
redevelopment ideas and each has attracted opposition from residents. Both sets
of opposition have yard signs to voice their displeasure and residents have
spoken at public meetings. Part One of this analysis involves the basics of the
proposed projects and how this fits into what suburbs generally try to do. The
Rethink Rezoning group is responding to a study commissioned by the city of
Wheaton to improve development along the busy Roosevelt Road corridor that runs
east-west through the center of the suburb. . .Neither of these projects are
unusual for suburban communities. Indeed, they both attempt to take advantage
of unique traits already in the suburb. In Wheaton, the Roosevelt Road corridor
has been an area of interest for the city for decades. With tens of thousands
of cars passing through each day, it presents an opportunity, particularly
since it is just south of the downtown (and traffic does not necessarily turn
off Roosevelt to go downtown) and north of the other major shopping area at
Danada (along the busy Butterfield Road corridor). But, Wheaton has generally
been conservative about what development they allow along this stretch.
Compared to Glen Ellyn to the east or the Ogden Avenue corridor in northwest
Naperville, the Roosevelt Road stretch in Wheaton is relatively void of strip
malls, fast food restaurants, car repair places, and rundown facilities. Again:
this has been an intentional effort to maintain a certain level of quality. The
proposed changes would build on this by updating some uses (most suburbs
utilize single-use zoning but this can be restrictive in certain areas) and try
to encourage some cohesiveness across stretches. What is now a hodgepodge of
offices, some older houses, some more recent office buildings, could have a
more uniform character and present a more pleasing aesthetic. I don’t know how
many people will walk along such a busy road but it certainly does not lend
itself to that now. All of this could help improve aesthetics and bring in more
revenue from taxes in a revitalized district. Having a more uniform plan could
help bring in more money for the city which then helps relieve local tax
burdens. . .If these projects are in line with suburban plans – let alone the
long-term plans for each community – what are the residents objecting to? More
on that in Part Two tomorrow.)

Questions about salary history are extremely common. A recent survey showed
that of 15,000 people currently evaluating job offers, 43 percent had been
asked for salary history during the interview process. Imagine the cumulative
effects of being asked about previous wages when considering a new job over the
course of a career. Salary history questions are a major contributing factor in
both racial and gender wage gaps. And this is exacerbated for women of color,
who, because of the realities of intersectionality, often face both. Black
women working in the U.S. make just 61 cents to a white man’s dollar. For
Native American women, it’s 58 cents. For Latinas, 53 cents. And when a
potential employer asks for past wages, it allows that pay inequity to
continue, impacting future wages and earning potential. Over a career, a woman
of color can lose over $1 million to the wage gap, further widening the wealth
gap. This loss of income has an impact on opportunities afforded to their
families, support for their communities and the economy at large.)

Patrol uniform home with pride. Now, after a typical 10-hour day in heat that
can exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit, he says many on his team no longer wear
their uniforms to or from the job. Tinoco, an agent of 14 years and U.S.
military veteran, said his fellow agents in Texas’s Rio Grande Valley are
repeatedly falling ill with flu. They’re also seeing scabies, tuberculosis,
chicken pox, and lice from waves of about 1,200 migrants crossing through their
facilities daily and are worried their uniforms will carry contagions. And
that’s not all, he said: Many agents are being harassed in public. “We’re
completely exhausted,” Tinoco said in an interview, not speaking in his
official capacity. “It takes a toll on the human spirit.” Long work hours and
exposure to diseases are driving agents to retire early and take sick leave,
union officials and government watchdogs say. While public outrage has focused
on the separation of families and children, overcrowding, and unsanitary
conditions, policymakers are increasingly concerned about attrition and suicide
among the agents on the front lines of the migrant surge. The border agency for
years has struggled with attrition, but this year has been one of the toughest
in the 95-year old patrol’s history. Migrant children and families crossed the
border in record numbers while agents saw their pay delayed by a 35-day
government shutdown. The patrol is approximately 7,000 agents short, the
Government Accountability Office reported in March. More than 700 customs
officers from around the country were diverted this spring when apprehensions
soared to more than 130,000. That division of the border agency now faces a
shortage of approximately 3,500 officers, said the National Treasury Employees
Union, which represents officers.)

just graduated from St. Olaf College after receiving an education I didn’t
expect. That’s because as a conservative at my small, Minnesota-based liberal
arts institution, I’ve spent the last four years defending myself against
personal and political attacks from professors and peers alike. The most recent
example came in late April as the St. Olaf College Republicans hosted scholar
Heather Mac Donald for a talk on her new book, “The Diversity Delusion: How
Race and Gender Pandering Corrupt the University and Undermine Our Culture.” As
chair of the group, I fielded many angry emails, including this from a theater
professor: “This speaker is dangerous. It’s not about a difference in
idealogical [sic] perspectives. This rhetoric is dangerous and puts my Black
body in danger. This is antithetical to the St. Olaf mission statement. I’m not
okay with this… and you all shouldn’t be either.” Several more professors
emailed similar sentiments. This example is no outlier. In early 2018, college
administrators shot down an effort to bring Ben Shapiro to campus for a speech.
The officials denied the request by saying Shapiro was too divisive to bring to
St. Olaf on the date in question. (It was the one-year anniversary of a racial
protest on campus). They promised Shapiro could come at some unknown future
date, but months of student organizing and planning were essentially wasted.
Shapiro never made it to St. Olaf College. Also last year, our College
Republicans’ display called “Why I’m a Conservative” was torn down by students
upset by its messaging. They were apparently triggered by expressions such as
“All human life has value,” “Facts > feelings,” “I love economic freedom”
and “I pay taxes.” All these incidents spring from the prevailing ideology on
campus, which was perhaps most evident the day after President Donald Trump was
elected. The campus was in a tailspin. Several professors cried in front of
their classes. Some canceled class altogether. Students openly wept in the
quad. Protests broke out at a moment’s notice.)
