CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— DIERSEN HEADLINE: Trump-haters say “Fact checking Trump’s CPAC speech: A 2-hour talk with a dizzying number of falsehoods.” What qualifications do Trump-haters have to be fact checkers? While I worked for GAO 1980-1997, the last 11 years of which at GS-13 Step 1-10 levels, currently $96,403-$125,325, I increasingly worked as a referencer, that is, as a fact checker. That work required assuring the accuracy and support for each and every word, number, table, graph, chart, conclusion, opinion, and recommendation in GAO reports. I worked for IRS 1971-1980, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels, currently $81,071-$91,880. My other fact checking qualifications include my becoming a Forensic Accountant in 1997, a Certified Fraud Examiner in 1990, a licensed CPA in 1981, a Certified Internal Auditor in 1981, and a CPA in 1979.)

GO LOCAL PROV
— OUTSTANDING: Congress Gears Up Legislative Efforts to Combat Age Discrimination – Herb Weiss (DIERSEN: All my critics/opponents, all their operatives, and all their dupes promote age discrimination a) because they want to get rid of those who are older than they are and/or b) because they want to curry favor with those who promote age discrimination.)
https://www.golocalprov.com/news/weiss-congress-gears-up-legislative-efforts-to-combat-age-discrimination
(FROM THE ARTICLE: With the 116th Congress beginning on January 3, 2019, Congress moves quickly to protect older Americans from rampant age discrimination. It is a key reason why Americans, age 40 and over, are fired or offered buyouts (with younger persons being hired in their place) and why they can’t find work after a period of unemployment and struggle to return to the workforce.  On Valentine’s Day, U.S. Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pa.), Ranking Member of the Special Committee on Aging, with cosponsors Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) and Susan Collins (R-Maine) re-introduced S 485, The Protecting Older Workers Against Discrimination Act (POWADA). The bill was referred to the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions. Fixing a Supreme Court Ruling Over a decade ago, a U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Gross v. FBL Financial Services weakened the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) by imposing a significantly higher burden of proof on older workers alleging age discrimination than is required of workers alleging other forms of workplace discrimination. As a result, workers that allege age discrimination must meet an undue legal burden not faced by workers alleging discrimination based on race, sex, national origin or religion. This sent a clear signal to employers: some age discrimination is perfectly fine. Enacting the bipartisan POWADA bill would restore the pre-Gross standard, recognizing once again the legitimacy of so-called “mixed-motive” claims in which discrimination is a, if not the deciding, factor. It would also reaffirm that workers may use any type of admissible evidence to prove their claims.)

https://www.pcmag.com/feature/366512/how-to-spot-fake-news-online
(FROM THE ARTICLE: NewsGuard relies on a team of journalists who analyze more than 2,000 news and information sites in the United States. Each site is evaluated and ranked on nine different criteria: Does the site repeatedly publish false content? Does it gather and present information responsibly? Does it regularly correct or clarify errors? Does it handle the difference between news and opinion responsibly? Does it avoid deceptive headlines? Does it disclose ownership and financing about itself? Does it clearly label advertising? Does it reveal who’s in charge, including possible conflicts of interest? Does it provide information about content creators? Each criteria is given a certain weighting, or number of points, to determine the site’s overall rating. A site earns a green rating if it meets basic standards of accuracy and accountability. A site is dinged with a red rating if it fails to meet those minimum standards.)

https://www.illinoisreview.com/illinoisreview/2019/02/nevins-to-il-gop-leadership-embrace-party-platform-or-step-down-.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: On February 9th, the Illinois Republican Central Committee held an open-to the public meeting. If you are not aware of this, cut yourself some slack: most of the precinct committeemen I know were also unaware of it-which logically means that their committees weren’t aware of it either. Nevertheless, approximately sixty concerned observers attended the meeting; the public portion lasted three hours after which the committee adjourned to do their sausage making in private. After a bit of jocular banter by Chairman Tim Schneider, a discussion ensued over precisely how much time to allot to non-member statements. In a move that illustrates the leadership’s reluctance to actually listen to its base, the committee members voted to allow sixty seconds per speaker and the microphone was passed around to those interested. Twelve individuals took the opportunity to speak their minds. I was one of them-and – owing to a kind soul who donated his moment in the sun- I took a little more than my allotment.)

My Democrat GAO superiors forced me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old, gave me unfair performance expectations and appraisals, always ranked me in the bottom half of my coworkers for pay-for-performance purposes, did not promote me beyond GS-13, got rid of my mentor in 1987, kept me off audits of IRS for all but 3 of the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, and forced me to take a $19,203 (26%) pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980. My Democrat IRS superiors did not promote me beyond GS-12, disallowed my education deductions in 1978, got rid of my mentor in 1975, and disallowed my partial day per diem claims in 1974. My Democrat Post Office superiors forced me resign in 1969 and disallowed my sick leave requests in 1969 and 1968.)

— Illinois GOP facing dire financial straits – Rich Miller
https://chicago.suntimes.com/politics/jb-pritzker-campaign-spending-democrats-illinois-republicans-dire-financial-straits/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Democratic Party of Illinois ended the year with about $1.4 million in the bank. The Illinois Republican Party finished with $313,000. The IL GOP is going to have to be frugal for a while until they can raise some dough. Rauner has been the state GOP’s most reliable donor. The former governor contributed $36.9 million to the state party since June 13th of 2014. The party raised another $20 million or so on top of that since that same date, but a large chunk of that money was pass-through cash from the two legislative caucuses for direct mail costs. The unofficial leader of the Republican Party’s wealthy Chicago-area “donor class” was Ron Gidwitz. He helped raise a ton of money for his party over the years. But Gidwitz is now the US Ambassador to Belgium, so he can’t do them any good. Bottom line: The Republican Party in this state is in very dire straits.)

— Wheaton Bowl owner Sal Falbo says he was targeted by Council candidate Bray-Parker – Glenn Minnis (DIERSEN: In 2002, I succeeded in getting the Milton Township Republican Central Committee (MTRCC) to hold its monthly meetings in the Wheaton Bowl Banquet Hall and the MTRCC has held its monthly meetings there ever since.)
https://dupagepolicyjournal.com/stories/511739295-wheaton-bowl-owner-says-he-was-targeted-by-council-candidate-bray-parker
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Sal Falbo thinks Erica Bray-Parker could use a new lesson plan. “I don’t think her actions were the right thing to be teaching her students,” Falbo told the DuPage Policy Journal as rumors of Bray-Parker’s attempting to bully him and other business owners in Wheaton into removing signs from their properties that were for political candidates she doesn’t agree with continue to swirl. “We all have a right to freedom of speech, and as a teacher you would think she would know and understand that,” he added. According to local business owner Jane Shaw, all the drama began when Bray-Parker, who teaches at Glenbard North and is an instructor at the Civics Club, penned a letter to Falbo and other local business owners demanding that they remove posters of former state Rep. Jeanne Ives, a Republican of Wheaton, from in front of their businesses, vowing never to return to their establishments if they failed to comply. Bray-Parker, who is running for Wheaton City Council in District 4, is also accused of using her students as part of her “bullying” campaign, Shaw added. “I don’t live in Wheaton but if I did there’s no way I would vote for her,” said Faldo, part owner of Wheaton Bowl. “She’s obviously an activist, but part of the responsibility in that is understanding that everyone has the same free speech rights that you do. On top of that, the signs she was complaining about weren’t even on my property; they were in front. She’s really made an issue out of a nonissue.” Meanwhile, Ives, who relinquished her seat in Springfield with the start of the legislative session, has been adamant in expressing her opinion that she doesn’t think what she calls Bray-Parker’s brand of politics is right for Wheaton. “Erica Bray-Parker should not be elected; make sure she isn’t,” she told the DuPage Policy Journal. “She is unfit to represent business owners and the respectful, hard-working taxpayers of Wheaton. She is a civics teacher who is not civil.” Bray-Parker also raised eyebrows in May 2018, when she penned a letter in the Daily Herald assailing Peter Breen, a Republican of Lombard who was a state representative at the time, over what she perceived to be his inadequate stance on the issue of gun control.)

PRAIRIE STATE WIRE
— McGlasson discouraged by lack of response to meeting request – W.J. Kennedy (DIERSEN: What do the following have to say about this: your Republican Precinct Committeeman/Captain, the officers of your Republican township, ward, and/or county party organizations, your representative on the Illinois Republican Party (IRP) State Central Committee, the IRP officers, the IRP National Committeeman, and the IRP National Committeewoman?)
https://prairiestatewire.com/stories/511740588-mcglasson-discouraged-by-lack-of-response-to-meeting-request
(FROM THE ARTICLE: All that Republican Committeeman John McGlasson says he is likely to get out of his call for a special meeting of the state GOP after the shellacking the party took in November is a chance to speak his mind at the party’s regularly scheduled meeting on Feb. 9 in Bolingbrook. If he can make his way onto the agenda. “Never heard back from anyone,” McGlasson, referring to his request for a special meeting, told Prairie State Wire. “I’m completely discouraged. I’ll try to give my viewpoints at the regular party meeting, if I get a chance.” The conservative McGlasson, committeeman from the 16th Congressional District, seconded fellow Committeeman’s Sean Morrison’s call for a special meeting after the embarrassing revelation in mid-December that Bruce Rauner sought someone to take his place on the ballot soon after his near loss to former State Rep. Jeanne Ives, a Republican of Wheaton, in the March primary. Again, he heard nothing. “We should be out looking hard for someone to challenge (U.S. Senator Dick) Durbin in 2020,” he said. “A good, enthusiastic candidate will help other candidates in down-ticket races. Maybe we could take a few of the House seats back. But they seem to be content with the way things are.” McGlasson needs five of the 18 Republican Central Committee members to call a special meeting of the party. He says with Bob Winchester’s legal claim for his Committee spot in the 15th Congressional District still in legal limbo, he doesn’t have them. “It is my opinion that the party needs to return to its roots as expressed in our party platform,” he said. “And we need to search for a leader that will lead us back to the basics of conservatism.” McGlasson said that a move is on to have Ives speak in Bolingbrook, but she told the Prairie State Wire that she has yet to receive an invitation. “I would tell them that they are disorganized and rudderless,” Ives said. “We need a fiscal contract with Illinoisans and a strategy to carry it out.” “We need new leadership,” she added, “after that bloodbath in November, and (the) revelation about Rauner. They (party leaders) can’t claim ignorance about that. He’s been funding the party for years.”)

— State Rep. Stava-Murray stands by comment that Naperville has ‘white supremacist policies’ – Erin Hegarty (DIERSEN: Politics is nasty. I should write a book about those in Wheaton and in Glen Ellyn who hint/imply/argue/shout that my hometown Crete was full of German Lutherans who were White supremacists, Nazis, KKK members, haters, racists, sexists, and bigots while I lived there 1948-1972. Better yet, I should sue them.)
https://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/naperville-sun/news/ct-nvs-stava-murray-white-supremacist-claims-st-0120-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: City officials reacted strongly to Stava-Murray’s claims about Naperville’s policies. “I don’t think that the city can be fairly characterized in that way. In fact, it’s very much the opposite,” Naperville Mayor Steve Chirico said. “It’s a very loving city and a very welcoming city.” Naperville City Councilman Kevin Coyne said the community celebrates diversity and welcomes people of all ethnicities. “Rep. Stava-Murray’s comments were reckless and unfounded,” Coyne said. “She should apologize to her constituents in Naperville who she has embarrassed with these disparaging and patently false comments.” Stava-Murray said Friday she is glad her comment, which was posted about two weeks ago, is getting attention. “I think this is a very necessary conversation people need to be having in Naperville and the Chicago area because we are still so segregated,” she said. “There are many schools in Naperville that have almost no black students in them and many schools where there is not a single black teacher teaching.” She also said Naperville makes no effort to educate residents on the city’s history as it relates race disparities and the city’s lack of a race-based bullying policy is “one of the areas where a lack of policy is a white supremacist policy.” Her preference for Oak Park is based on the fact that “they actually have a history of actively working to desegregate their area,” she said. “This reaction of caring more about appearance than reducing the negative impact on white active denial of white supremacy, that’s what made me want to move to Oak Park in the first place,” she said. Chirico said that while he understands some opinions can be based on experiences, he doesn’t see how a blanket statement regarding white supremacy could be applied to Naperville. “I certainly don’t think there’s any government policy that could even be interpreted that way,” Chirico said.)

— U.N.C. Admissions Lawsuit Brings Another Attack on Affirmative Action – Anemona Hartocollis (DIERSEN: How bad are your demographics? UIC admitted me in 1966, NIU in 1969, Loyola in 1972, DePaul in 1976, and IIT in 1992, but I doubt that they would admit me today. My demographics are terrible in their eyes. I am a Trump supporter, Protestant (Baptized, raised, and confirmed as a Missouri Synod Lutheran), conservative, patriotic, Republican, American, White, male, old (born in 1948), non-poor, gun owner, draft avoider, 100% German American, my ancestors have been in America since 1844, etc.)
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/18/us/unc-affirmative-action-lawsuit.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill weighs race so heavily in its admissions process that it is the predominant factor in determining whether many black and Hispanic students get in, according to court papers filed on Friday by an anti-affirmative action group that is also suing Harvard. The group, Students for Fair Admissions, says the university is excluding white and Asian applicants in favor of less qualified black and Hispanic students. The plaintiffs accuse U.N.C., a public flagship university, of using race “at every stage” of the admissions process, in violation of the law, “even when the application gives no indication that race affected the student’s life in any way.”)

https://www.forbes.com/sites/forbescoachescouncil/2019/01/15/stop-hiring-self-selection-is-better/#a78b4a94a5e6
(FROM THE ARTICLE: “Self-selection” is a relatively new phrase on the hiring scene. According to Personnel Today, “Self-selection is the process where a job seeker is given information about the negative aspects of a vacancy and employer as well as the good points, to better enable them to make an informed decision about whether to apply for a job.” Its transparency gives candidates the option upfront to withdraw themselves from being considered for a position, for whatever reason. However, self-selection has a longer history than one might imagine; and like every story, self-selection has two sides. The dark side of self-selection was in full bloom just a few decades ago. I’ve been on the planet long enough to remember help wanted ads that simply advised people of different races, nationalities or genders not to apply. None of those criteria determine anyone’s ability, talents, or attributes. Let’s not go back to the old days of discrimination — that’s never a good goal for your business, brand or candidates.)

I am 70. What muscle cars do you own? I own a 2016 Ford Mustang, 2013 Dodge Charger R/T Max, 2005 Chevy Corvette, 2003 Chevy Cavalier LS, 1996 Ford Thunderbird LX, and a 1972 Chevy Corvette.)
https://www.chicagotribune.com/classified/automotive/sc-auto-cover-muscle-cars-20181225-story.html

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Retail sales of large passenger cars, a segment that includes the Nissan Maxima and Chevy Impala, is down 21 percent in 2018, according to J.D. Power. The Ford Mustang, the top-selling muscle car in America, was down a modest 3.6 percent through last month. . .Another factor contributing to the potential decline in muscle cars is an aging population. Most muscle cars are owned by Baby Boomers, the youngest of who are in their mid-50s, the Associated Press reported in September. As Boomers continue to age, it is likely they will have less money and less interest in muscle cars. The question is if a new generation of drivers raised on high-riding and numb driving crossovers will appreciate the muscle behind these cars.)

— It’s time to fix Social Security’s tax burden – LIZ WESTON
https://www.dailyherald.com/business/20181230/its-time-to-fix-social-securitys-tax-burden
(FROM THE ARTICLE: People on Social Security need a tax break. The rest of us need to make sure they get it — for everyone’s sake. When Congress made Social Security benefits taxable in 1983, lawmakers didn’t index the tax thresholds to inflation. They “forgot” inflation again when adding a second layer of taxation in 1993. That means the proportion of recipients who have to pay federal income taxes on their benefits keeps increasing. Initially, only 1 in 10 Social Security recipients had to pay any federal tax. Now, it’s over half. Not indexing to inflation is a sneaky way of boosting taxes. Lawmakers can count on growing federal revenue without the politically uncomfortable act of repeatedly voting for those increases. The taxes are based on combined income, which is a taxpayer’s adjusted gross income, plus any tax-exempt interest (such as interest on mutual bonds) and half of her Social Security benefit.)
