CHICAGO TRIBUNE

— A look at Gov. Mike Pence’s Chicago roots – Bill Ruthhart

(FROM THE ARTICLE: “I really owe a debt of gratitude to Chicago that springs from my own personal history. When my grandfather got off a boat on Ellis Island in about 1923, he caught a train to Chicago and he drove a bus in this city for about 40 years,” Pence told the crowd. “My mom and dad both grew up on the South Side of Chicago, down around 55th and Honore. In fact, we have family that goes to school and lives and works in this community here today.”  The religious conservative also noted how especially meaningful it was to be addressing the City Club during December, the time of year he often traveled to Chicago as a child. “It’s very personal when I’m in this city. I feel very at home. My story is I was raised by two big city kids in a really small town in southern Indiana,” said Pence, who grew up in Columbus, Ind., and represented the area in Congress before becoming governor in 2013. “Particularly this time of year, the Pence family would find themselves in the back of a station wagon making the long trip up what was then Highway 31 to the South Side of Chicago to hearth and home and family and friends. It’s a blessing to be here this time of year with all of you and reflect on those deep memories.” The speech may have been a blessing, but Pence also used it as an opportunity to unload some ribbing on what he characterized as Illinois’ political and governmental dysfunction. He noted Indiana-purchased billboards in Illinois that read “Caution high taxes ahead” and “Attention tax drop. State line 16 miles ahead” as the audience laughed. “We’ve been buying a lot in Crain’s Chicago Business magazine,” Pence said with a smirk. “My personal favorite was: You had me at balanced budget.”)
— We should have more say over Facebook news – Phil Rosenthal  (DIERSEN: Who wants to have say over what you do? The following want to have say over what I do: those who a) reject planks in the Republican Party platform and work against those like me who support those planks, b) reject planks in the Illinois Republican Party platform and work against those like me who support those planks, c) reject the Milton Township Republican Central Committee resolution against video gambling and work against those like me who support that resolution, d) focus on destroying those like me who they cannot manipulate/dominate, e) were defendants in lawsuits that I have filed, f) are operatives for the aforesaid, and/or g) are dupes for the aforesaid and those who are anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America longer than their ancestors.)
http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/columnists/ct-rosenthal-facebook-rainbow-0715-biz-20160714-column.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: For a while Wednesday night and into Thursday, you may have noticed on the website where more than 40 percent of U.S. adults are said to get word of current events, the biggest news in Chicago was a double rainbow. This is what happens when Facebook tweaks its news feed algorithm. Every person with a smartphone shot got to decorate your news feed, turning it into a veritable Rainbow Connection, squeezing out whatever else might have been going on in the world, potentially affecting your life and business. Yet, to be honest, the rash of rainbows actually were a welcome respite. The sight of something everyone could get behind was a much-needed palate cleanser from what Facebook has become of late, even if it grew repetitive after a while. A fuller spectrum of color is nice when so much seems geared to making us see red. Since Facebook moved to downgrade and downplay news sites (such as the Chicago Tribune) in its news feed, the social media site with more than 1 billion users worldwide has, for many users, become an even more contentious toxic dump of inflamed political bickering and rumors. The expectation when the change was announced was that users would be inundated by their Facebook friends’ vacation videos, baby pictures, food commentary, health updates and other trivia. That’s all there. There’s no shortage of info about which of your acquaintances doesn’t get the appeal of “Pokemon Go,” who went to the Adele concert and who scored well on a vocabulary test making the rounds. But because the algorithm favors what users share among themselves, respond to, spend time with and comment on, the “real” news that finds its way into the stream can be among the most extreme, divisive version of any given story.)

You might get asked those questions if you run for a statewide government or political office. You might get asked those questions if you run for any government or political office that represents Chicago or any part of it.)
http://chicago.suntimes.com/politics/sneed-trump-pick-has-deep-chicago-ties/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Donald Trump may have chosen a lifelong Hoosier as his running mate, but Indiana Gov. Mike Pence has strong Chicago ties. Pence, the grandson of a Chicago bus driver, is now ready to get on board the Trump train. Trump’s veep mate addressed the City Club of Chicago months before Trump jumped into the presidential fray, speaking at the City Club in June 2015. It was during Pence’s City Club address that his “great connection to Chicago” was discussed, informing the audience his grandfather got off the boat at Ellis Island — and then took a bus to Chicago, where he lived for 40 years. Said Pence: “My parents grew up on Chicago’s South Side, around 55th and Honore. I have family that continues to live and work in the Chicago community; my oldest brother went to Loyola University. “I grew up in the country raised by two city folks. Christmastime meant the family would pack up and ride up to the South Side of Chicago to be with friends and family.” Rev. Clete Kiley, the chief operations administrator for Chicago Archbishop Blase J. Cupich, tells Sneed Pence once marched with civil rights hero U.S. Congressman John Lewis. “He participated in the annual Congressional Civil Rights Pilgrimage to Alabama years ago,” said Kiley, who was then head of the Institute for Faith and Politics.” “As a Republican, Pence accepted a leadership role and marched across the Edmund Pettis Bridge in memory of the civil right marches in Selma and Montgomery, Alabama,” said Kiley. Ald. Ed Burke (14th), his wife, Justice Anne Burke, and their son, Travis, was also on that pilgrimage march with Pence in Alabama. “It was quite a moving pilgrimage,” Burke said.)

http://www.westernfreepress.com/2016/07/14/legislation-on-illinois-governor-rauners-desk-to-appoint-muslim-advisory-council/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: As Ms. Geller asks, I reiterate and wholeheartedly agree: “Why a Muslim council? Where’s the Hindu council, Jewish council, Pagan council, Church of Scientology council, Christian council?” Why is it Imam Kareem Infra and his Muslim counterparts should get special preference in an advisory capacity to Illinois governmental matters?  They, like all Illinois residents, enjoy the sacred right and privilege to cast votes in Illinois elections.  That is how Illinois residents participate in government matters.  It appears to me, by their recent request to the Governor,  that Imam Infra and his group feel they should have more influence in the government than the average Illinois voter?! Well I say no!  And I emphatically say no given the history of this Imam and his nefarious relationships, including his stint as Chairman of ISNA, which was named an unindicted co-conspirator back in the 2008 Holy Land Foundation (HLF) terrorist-financing trial. I called Gov Rauner’s office this morning and expressed my concern and “Mia” who said she would pass my comments on to the Governor.  I then asked for an appointment with Governor Rauner, awaiting a call back. Please folks, pick up your phones today and call Governor Rauner’s office and ask why he might feel that Imam Infra and his Muslim group should have more influence on Illinois government matters than the average Illinois taxpayer.  Let him know that if that is the case and he agrees, then you would like him to consider legislation for a Jewish Advisory Council, a Catholic Advisory Council, how about an Irish Advisory Council, and Italian Advisory Council, a Polish Advisory Council. The Springfield office number for Governor Rauner is  217-782-0244. We pay plenty of taxes in this state and we absolutely have “earned” the right to be heard on this important matter involving our government.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Illinois Republican Party seems to be changing its tone about Donald Trump’s candidacy – at least a little bit. When the Illinois Republican Party appointed delegates to the national convention – they picked some people who have been vocal in opposing Donald Trump’s candidacy. Governor Bruce Rauner won’t talk about Trump – or the presidential campaign. And other top Illinois Republicans are skipping the convention – and have said they won’t support Trump. These actions led some Trump delegates like Anthony Anderson to say they’re also skipping the conventions, out of protest. ANDERSON: I realize Illinois is a blue state, but for Pete’s sake, they’re not even lifting a finger. In response – the state Republican Party released an unusually direct statement (LINK?) supporting Donald Trump…and highlighting the party’s connections to the Trump campaign.)

http://www.wmay.com/2016/07/13/rauner-signs-order-to-boost-minority-female-businesses/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Minority- and female-owned businesses could have an easier time getting state contracts under an executive order signed by Governor Bruce Rauner. The initiative could include the creation of more “sheltered markets,” where certain state requests for bids are set aside for businesses owned by women, minorities or persons with disabilities. Rauner says those groups often have less opportunity to fully participate in the state economy.)

http://edgarcountywatchdogs.com/2016/07/general-assembly-adults-are-in-the-room/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: This morning, several legislators held a press conference in Chicago calling for the removal of the Illinois Auditor General.  They filed a House Joint Resolution to initiate the process. “Auditor General Mautino is not able to perform his duties with the trust and confidence that Illinoisans deserve,” Rep. Kay said. “If he will not do the right thing on his own and step aside, we have a responsibility as the people’s elected representatives to hold him accountable,” Add Rep. Ives  The people of Illinois are witnessing first-hand what Benjamin Franklin’s answer to that famous question of  “what kind of government did you give us”, really means.  “A republic if you can keep it.”  This, ladies and gentlemen, is how you keep it!  Action by responsible people elected and entrusted to take action based on the best interest of the state, not themselves. FREEDOM OUTPOST AND PATRIOTS 1776
— Sharia: Illinois To Create Official State Government Muslim Council  (DIERSEN: From the West Suburban Patriots: VETO Illinois – SB574 (Muslim Advisory Council)  FOLKS, YOU HAVE TO CALL Governor Bruce Rauner’s office: (217) 782-0244  or (312) 814-2121 and give your opinion on this bill  You can also email him at:
[email protected]  Here’s a letter one of our patriots wrote to the Governor: Please Veto SB 574  Article One, Section three of the Illinois constitution contains a clause that says NO PREFERENCE SHALL BE GIVEN BY LAW TO ANY RELIGION. I would argue all day long the creation of a muslim advisory council gives preference to Islam and therefore violates the Illinois constitution; since one can only be a muslim if he/she is an practitioner of Islam.  The muslim advisory council could easily be called Islamic American advisory council, because the religion of Islam is where muslim guidance will come from, Islamic doctrine and shariah  ARTICLE 1, SECTION 3. RELIGIOUS FREEDOM  The free exercise and enjoyment of religious profession and worship, without discrimination, shall forever be guaranteed, and no person shall be denied any civil or political right, privilege or capacity, on account of his religious opinions; but the liberty of conscience hereby secured shall not be construed to dispense with oaths or affirmations, excuse acts of licentiousness, or justify practices inconsistent with the peace or safety of the State. No person shall be required to attend or support any ministry or place of worship against his consent, nor shall any preference be given by law to any religious denomination or mode of worship. ~ (Source: Illinois Constitution.)  If the state proposed advisory council was called the Christian American advisory council Act, the screams from the left would be deafening. Gov Rauner, there is a very sound reason why no other state has such a muslim advisory council, it’s because such a law violates every “separation of church and state” type clauses contained in every state constitution…. just as it will be contrary to the one enshrined within the Illinois constitution.  Respecting the Illinois constitution isn’t optional…  Mr Governor, it’s your duty to VETO SB 574, the “muslim American Advisory council Act ”, you must uphold the rule of law!)

http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/reince-diversity-of-experience
(FROM THE ARTICLE: With Donald Trump’s reported vice presidential prospects all white men, RNC chair Reince Priebus wants people to focus on another type of diversity: the diversity of experience. In an interview Wednesday, CNN’s Wolf Blitzer questioned Priebus about previous comments he made hoping Trump’s veep hopefuls would be “diverse.” When Blitzer asked him if he was disappointed that no people of color or women made the cut, Priebus said that is not what diversity means to Trump. “Well, I know that all of those things are on the table and I think it also comes down to who he thinks is most compatible, and who would be best for our country,” Priebus said. “There is also diversity of experience, and sometimes something that would be beneficial that I think he is also looking at. He has been pretty clear that having experience in matters in both governing in Washington and your state as an executive, he talked about foreign policy experience as another issue to be thought about and discussed. So diversity from Donald Trump as an outsider, a successful businessman, is these choices that he is looking at.” Blitzer followed up to see if this was the type of diversity Priebus had in mind when he made his comments and Priebus doubled down on the comments. “Look, for each presidential candidate, the diversity that you seek in the spot that you’re, you know, the vice presidential spot can be a lot of things,” he said. “It can be all of the above, experience, gender, race, that is an important ingredient.” Trump’s veep finalists reportedly include New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R), former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich and Indiana Gov. Mike Pence (R). Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA), one of the only women discussed, took herself out of the running earlier this month.)

Miller, a veteran of the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO), will serve public-sector clients seeking to assess and reduce the risk of fraud. “We’re pleased to welcome Linda to Grant Thornton’s Fraud Risk Assessment team,” said Carlos Otal, national managing partner of Grant Thornton’s Public Sector. “Linda’s GAO experience and thorough understanding of strategies for preventing, detecting and responding to fraud will be a tremendous asset to our government clients.” Miller was assistant director of Forensic Audits and Investigative Service at the GAO for the past 10 years. She led the development of A Framework for Managing Fraud Risks in Federal Programs, the first-ever guidance for federal program managers to help them proactively manage fraud risk and prevent the occurrence of fraud. Miller’s efforts led to the recent passage of the Fraud Reduction and Data Analytics Act of 2015, which requires federal agencies to take steps to reduce fraud and establish better internal controls. In addition to her tenure at the GAO, Miller has served as adjunct professor at George Washington University’s Trachtenberg School of Public Policy and Public Administration since 2013. She was a member of the U.S. Olympic Women’s Rowing Team from 1996 to 2000, competing in the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. WBEZ
— Some Illinois Trump Delegates Skipping Convention In Protest Of State Republican Party – Tony Arnold
https://www.wbez.org/shows/_/some-illinois-trump-delegates-skipping-convention-in-protest-of-state-republican-party/12dccfd9-c948-4c29-a2bf-890827ea9afe
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Some Illinois delegates for Donald Trump are not going to go to the Republican National Convention next week to nominate their candidate. They say their decision is at least in part because of the tepid support Trump has received from the Illinois Republican Party. Rich Nordstrom was elected to be a delegate for Donald Trump by almost 25,000 voters in Illinois’ 17th Congressional District. Nordstrom is the mayor of Galva, Ill., a town of about 3,000 people between Peoria and Moline, Ill. Nordstrom is enthusiastic about Trump as the Republican nominee for president, but he’s not so enthusiastic about going to the Republican National Convention next week, where delegates like him are supposed to cast a vote to officially name Donald Trump as the Republican presidential nominee. He said he was let down when he heard a lot of his own fellow Illinois Republicans won’t be there. Gov. Bruce Rauner, U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk and a few congressmen from Illinois have said they won’t go to the convention. Some of those top-ranking Illinois Republicans have been vocal in saying they won’t endorse Trump. “Now that we finally have a Republican governor after years of not having one, then basically kind of blowing off the convention – I thought it was kind of a letdown, a slap in the face,” Nordstrom said of Rauner. Nordstrom added that time and money also are a factor for why he may skip the convention. Delegates have to pay their own way to the convention. Nordstrom said he didn’t get a room at the hotel where the Illinois delegation is staying earlier, thinking the price of about $300 dollars per night was too much for him. Now, he said, he’s finding prices are closer to $500 a night. Nordstrom said he’ll see how he feels on Sunday – the day before the convention starts – while keeping his eye on rooms available on AirBnb. Although he’s quick to note he’s not excited about the prospects of sharing a room. Anthony Anderson is another Trump delegate. The Joliet resident was elected to represent Illinois’ 11th Congressional District in Cleveland to vote for Trump. Anderson said he is not going to the convention out of protest of the Illinois state Republican Party not supporting Trump. “There’s absolutely no room for me to change my mind for the simple fact I’ve thought long and hard,” he said. “I just don’t like what I see; what I see is a delegation that’s ready to go to Cleveland and undermine the process, at least so far as the Illinois delegation is concerned.” Anderson pointed out that the former chairman of the Illinois Republican Party, Pat Brady, said he won’t ever support Trump. “A former party chairman is going to go to Cleveland, Ohio and do everything he can to undermine the process and make the Illinois delegation look bad; and it really will make the Illinois delegation look bad and tattered,” Anderson said. “I’m not going to undermine the candidate,” Brady said of Anderson’s comments. “I’ve been a Republican for 45 years. I’m going to try to help the party and I think Donald Trump is going to be a trainwreck for the Republican Party.” Brady won election to be a delegate for Ohio Gov. John Kasich, which means Brady has to vote for Kasich at the convention. Brady said he’s not happy to hear Trump delegates like Anderson are skipping the convention – but he also acknowledges that their absence helps his cause of trying to stop Trump from receiving the Republican nomination. “If 10 percent of the delegates don’t show up or don’t get viable replacements or valid replacements, I think his nomination could be in jeopardy,” Brady said. “I would think that that’s pretty unlikely,” said John Fogarty, the general counsel for the Illinois Republican Party. Fogarty said the party already knows at least five delegates who are not attending. And there could be more. A party spokesman said things are still in flux. Party leaders are trying to contact alternate delegates who won election in March. “Delegate and alternate delegate vacancies are routine and occur nationwide every Presidential election cycle,” Illinois Republican Party spokesman Aaron DeGroot said in a statement. But the party had no comment on criticisms from its own delegation about its own party not supporting Trump. Fogarty says when Trump delegates fail to show up in Cleveland, the odds for people like Pat Brady to prevent Trump from becoming the nominee are better – but he said they’re still very long odds to overcome.)

— FRONT PAGE: Are you being double-taxed for mosquito control? – Jake Griffin
http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20160713/news/160719667/#autoplay
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Only one creature on this planet is so loathed that Illinois created special taxing districts to combat its presence. While the pesky mosquito lacks size, it can pack a pretty significant wallop for suburban taxpayers, especially for some who are paying multiple agencies to battle the bugs. “Why am I paying for two mosquito abatements? That seems like government bloat,” said Wheaton resident Mary Ann Vitone. “There shouldn’t be duplication like that here.”  Vitone lives within the Wheaton Mosquito Abatement District, a 22-square-mile swath of central DuPage County where $425,578 was spent last year to control the mosquito population, or $19,344 per square mile. She also lives in Milton Township, which spent an additional $48,066 total to fight the pests, according to agency financial reports. Some Carol Stream residents might be paying taxes for three different agencies to ward off mosquitoes. The village spent $76,063 last year, Bloomingdale Township spent $166,980, and the West Chicago Mosquito Abatement District spent $163,051. And they aren’t the only ones. In Glen Ellyn, some taxpayers are paying for double coverage from Milton Township and the Glen Ellyn Mosquito Abatement District.)

http://www.illinoismirror.com/chicago-tribunes-kim-geiger-misleads-on-rauners-school-funding-commission-presser/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Chicago media provided new levels of embarrassment at the press conference held by Governor Bruce Rauner on July 12. After announcing the formation of a bipartisan commission that will attempt to change the state’s controversial education funding formula, Gov. Rauner opened the floor to questions, saying: “With that, I’m going to open it up to questions, and I’ll say this: I realize there are a lot of topics people are gonna want to talk about. I will ask today—I’ll be with you tomorrow and I’ll be with you the next day here in Chicago with the press, so we can talk about other things on other days—I’d ask that your questions be about education today.” This didn’t prevent ABC 7‘s Charles Thomas and NBC 5‘s Mary Ann Ahern from almost immediately and repeatedly disregarding the Governor’s request and questioning Rauner about Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee whom Rauner has said he won’t endorse. At the time of Gov. Rauner’s press conference, Trump was in Chicago hosting a fundraiser. “I’ve said everything I’m going to say about the presidential race,” Rauner responded. Ahern, in particular, pressed Gov. Rauner about the topics of Trump and Indiana Governor Mike Pence, a potential vice presidential pick, several more times, and seemed indignant when the Governor declined to discuss a topic he’s already addressed and that was not at all related to the reason for the Q&A session: the new commission tasked with revamping the state’s education funding formula. It was painfully evident that certain members of the media were far more interested in backing Rauner into a corner and getting a controversial and spin-able sound bite on the presidential race than they were in discussing a more equitable school funding formula, an issue that will have a significant impact on the schoolchildren of Illinois, particularly those who live in low-income districts. It gets worse, though. The award for most irresponsible and misleading journalist of the day goes not to Thomas or Ahern but to the Chicago Tribune’s Kim Geiger for her piece summarizing the press conference.)

http://www.usatoday.com/story/life/books/2016/07/05/george-w-bush-jean-edward-smith-book-review/86204410/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: “Not since Woodrow Wilson has a president so firmly believed that he was the instrument of God’s will,” Smith writes. “Just as Wilson’s religious certitude led him into disaster at Versailles, so George W. Bush’s messianic conviction distorted his leadership in the days following 9/11.”  Bush, Smith writes, “was in over his head,” and he bumbled into the invasion of Iraq by using bogus intelligence. Those claims, as most Americans now realize, were incorrect, and the war’s legacy — creating a legion of shattered veterans, a broken Iraq and a stronger Iran — remains with us today.)

— Rauner snubs Trump during visit to Chicago – Angelica LaVito
http://www.politico.com/states/illinois/story/2016/07/rauner-snubs-trump-during-visit-to-chicago-103742
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Gov. Bruce Rauner gave his party’s presumptive presidential nominee the cold shoulder on Tuesday. The Republican governor announced the formation of a school funding commission at the Thompson Center while Donald Trump was in town for a fundraiser just blocks away. Rauner instructed reporters to keep their questions focused on the commission. Some strayed off topic anyway and asked the governor why he was not joining the presumptive leader of his party. Rauner declined to comment. “I’ve said everything I’m going to say about the presidential race,” Rauner said. But the governor’s only public comments came in March when he told students in Wilmette that he was “horrified” by the rhetoric in the Republican presidential campaign and that “it’s ugly and it’s nasty and it’s weird.” He stopped short of mentioning Trump’s name. That same month, he also promised to back the eventual Republican nominee, regardless of who it would be. But he has refused to formally endorse Trump, declining to lead the Illinois delegation at the GOP Convention in Cleveland. In fact, he will not attend next week’s convention at all. On Tuesday, Rauner ignored a question about where he would be during the convention. Sen. Mark Kirk, a fellow Republican in the midst of a contentious re-election campaign, will also skip the convention. But he has taken a more aggressive approach toward the presumptive nominee. Kirk rescinded his support for Trump last month, saying in a statement, “After much consideration, I have concluded that Donald Trump has not demonstrated the temperament necessary to assume the greatest office in the world.” Last week Trump attacked Kirk for refusing to support him in a closed-door meeting with Senate Republicans on Capitol Hill. Kirk fired back, calling Trump an “Eastern, privileged, wealthy bully.” If a snub from a pair of Illinois politicians in his own party wasn’t enough, two demonstrations railed against Trump outside of Chicago’s Trump Tower. U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky, a Democrat, held a “Chicago Trumps Hate” protest while NextGen Climate Illinois and Latino Policy Forum’s A.C.C.E.S.S. student group protested Trump’s energy plan and his comments on immigrants and minorities.)

— DONALD TRUMP CAMPAIGNS IN CHICAGO, INDIANA; PROTESTERS GATHER OUTSIDE TRUMP TOWER – Diane Pathieu , Charles Thomas and Ben Bradley
http://abc7chicago.com/politics/donald-trump-in-chicago;-protesters-gather-outside-trump-tower/1423315/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump is in Chicago for a fundraiser Tuesday followed by a rally in Indiana, one week before the Republican National Convention is set to begin. After a morning fundraiser in Chicago, Trump headed to a 6:30 p.m. private rally and fundraiser in Westerfield, Ind. There is much talk of who Trump’s running mate may be, especially after New Gingrich announced he has severed ties with the Fox News Channel as a paid contributor, a possibly sign that he may be rising on the shortlist. The pick is expected to be announced by the end of the week and includes a Hoosier on the short list. “I think the opportunity for Hoosiers to hear from him directly is exciting. I look forward to joining him there and if he wants me to bring a few words, I’d be happy to,” said Indiana Governor Mike Pence. “I’m just as anxious as the rest of you are on who the VP pick is,” said House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) Tuesday. While the Speaker would rather focus on the veep-stakes than his own issues with his party’s candidate, others are being blunt. “I can’t vote for Hillary Clinton and I can’t vote for Donald Trump, and it breaks my heart,” says Jeb Bush. Bush, who was essentially ridiculed out of the race by Trump, told NBC the brash businessman doesn’t have the trustworthiness to be president. “Simply put there’s a threshold anyone who walks into the Oval Office must pass and I don’t think Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump pass that threshold,” he said. But outside Trump’s Indiana event, supporters see their candidate as tough in turbulent times. “I feel we have very little respect for law enforcement with the current administration. Plus I’d like to see secure borders, safety for my grandchildren,” said Gary McGinnis, Trump supporters.)

CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
— Chicago GOP a more exclusive club than you might think – Mark Brown
http://chicago.suntimes.com/politics/brown-chicago-gop-more-exclusive-club-than-you-might-think/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The dispute has its roots in a decision earlier this year by the Cook County Republican Party to oust 13 of the city’s 50 GOP ward committeemen on suspicion of being Democrats.  Although all 13 filed the proper papers to run as Republicans and were subsequently elected by GOP voters in the March 15 primary (most running unopposed), the county party declared them ineligible for office under a new loyalty bylaw. The Republican rule, enacted a week before Election Day but after early voting had already started, holds that candidates for ward committeeman may not have voted in another party’s primary during the previous eight years. Each of the 13 ousted GOP committeemen had pulled a Democratic ballot at least once during that period, Republican officials say. The committeemen have disputed their removal on the basis that they met all state legal requirements for the office, which do not include any test based on how they’ve voted in the past. They say their ouster thwarts the will of the voters who cast ballots for them.)

The rally is in response to Trump’s fundraiser here that same day, in which guests will pay from $10,000 to $100,000 to fete the presumptive Republican nominee for president. “In light of everything that’s been happening, our country needs unity more than ever,” Ben Head, Schakowsky’s political director, said Monday afternoon. “Donald Trump is the exact opposite, he’s tearing us apart.” Tuesday will mark Trump’s first appearance here since a political rally at the University of Illinois at Chicago was canceled out of “safety” reasons in March. Thousands of protesters swarmed the venue and outside, prompting Trump to cancel the event then. Other Chicagoans have since stepped up less organized forms of protest, ranging from flipping off the Trump International Hotel & Tower, 401 N. Wabash Ave., to making satirical videos, piñatas and toilets lampooning the controversial presidential candidate. Trump, who’s stepped up his campaign fundraising in recent weeks, will charge from $10,000 to $100,000 for his Tuesday fundraiser, whose location is only being disclosed to donors, according to the Sun-Times. Trump is expected to receive the Republican Party’s nomination for president at the party’s convention next week. A Trump spokeswoman did not immediately return a message seeking comment.)

— Trump tweets about Chicago crime, hours before fundraiser here – Leonor Vivanco
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/ct-trump-chicago-tweet-met-0712-20160712-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Presidential candidate Donald Trump tweeted Tuesday morning about Chicago’s crime problem hours before he was scheduled to attend a private fundraiser in the city — one that may draw protests. “Crime is out of control, and rapidly getting worse. Look what is going on in Chicago and our inner cities. Not good!” he tweeted. He later followed up that tweet with another: “This election is a choice between law, order & safety – or chaos, crime & violence. I will make America safe again for everyone. #ImWithYou”  So far this year, more than 2,100 people have been shot compared to more than 2,900 people for the entire year of 2015, according to Tribune data. The homicide tally is at 342 people for the first half of the year, a pace not seen since the late 1990s. New York and Los Angeles combined have fewer shooting and homicide victims than Chicago this year so far. A year ago, Trump told the Tribune Editorial Board that crime is damaging the city’s reputation. “You’ve got to stop it. You’re not going to stop it by being nice. You’re going to stop it by being one tough son of a bitch,” Trump said at the time. During the June 2015 appearance before the editorial board, Trump acknowledged there have been cases of police brutality but said he believed police today are not as tough as when he was growing up in the mid-1960s. “You need tough cookies. These are tough kids. These are not babies. These are tough, tough kids,” he said at the time. “If they saw you walking down the street, they wouldn’t give a damn about you,” he said then. “You can’t be so gentle with these people.” “I’m a big fan of the police, but I think the police now are afraid to act. They’re afraid to be tough.” Tuesday’s fundraiser in Chicago marks Trump’s first campaign-related visit to Chicago since the canceled rally at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where supporters and protesters converged in March. Tickets are $10,000 to attend, $25,000 to get a photo with a candidate and $100,000 to be part of a VIP Roundtable that includes photos and two lunch tickets, according to an invitation for the event. A protest is planned for 10 a.m. Tuesday morning outside downtown’s Trump International Hotel & Tower Chicago organized by a number of community leaders calling on Trump to end his divisive rhetoric. Among the scheduled speakers are Illinois National Organization for Women president Susan Straus, SEIU Healthcare Illinois executive vice president Greg Kelley and Inner-City Muslim Action Network executive director Rami Nashashibi, according to news releases issued about the planned protest. U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D – IL) is in Washington, D.C. but helped spread word of the event by emailing her constituents. “She feels strongly Trump’s message is overly divisive at a time when our nation needs unity,” said Ben Head, the congresswoman’s political director.)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-kirk-dillard-donald-trump-convention-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Add former governor hopeful Kirk Dillard to the list of prominent Republicans who won’t be heading to the GOP convention for the formal nomination of polarizing presidential candidate Donald Trump — and to the list of those who don’t want to talk about why they won’t be there. Dillard, who chairs the Regional Transportation Authority after losing the 2014 Republican primary for governor to eventual winner Bruce Rauner, said he might attend a reception in Cleveland for transit officials. But he won’t be going to the convention itself, which runs from July 18-21. Asked Monday why he won’t go to the convention to support Trump, Dillard paused, smiled at a group of reporters and said, “You know, I’ll get to you later on that,” before walking away. Dillard ran in the March 15 primary as a delegate for Jeb Bush, who had long folded his tent by then (the delegate filing deadline is well before the primaries start and candidates drop out along the way). Dillard joins Rauner, U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk and U.S. Rep. Robert Dold, who faces a tough re-election effort in the North Shore 10th District, on the list of Illinois Republicans staying away from the convention.)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/politics/ct-donald-trump-charity-20160712-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Watchdog group with ties to Democrats has asked the IRS to investigate Donald Trump’s charitable foundation over a report that Trump used money meant for charity to buy a football helmet signed by former NFL star Tim Tebow. “What’s unambiguous is that Mr. Trump … manager and fiduciary of the Foundation’s charitable assets, used Foundation dollars to purchase football memorabilia that he personally coveted,” wrote Brad Woodhouse of the American Democracy Legal Fund, in a letter to the IRS. Woodhouse is a longtime Democratic operative.  The liberal watchdog said that Trump appeared to have violated rules against “self-dealing,” which are designed to keep charity leaders from using their nonprofits to help themselves. It asked that the IRS open an investigation, which could lead to tax penalties for Trump, the foundation’s president.)

CRAIN’S CHICAGO BUSINESS
— ‘Play to pay’ politics is bad, but it works: business survey – GREG HINZ  (DIERSEN: Political parties exist to help elect candidates who can and will defend and advance their platform. In Illinois, if you seek or accept anything of value from any individual, organization, or company to anything against the Illinois Republican Party platform, you should not seek or hold any kind of government office or political office as a Republican.)
http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20160711/BLOGS02/160719976/chicagos-pay-to-play-politics-works-say-business-execs-in-new-survey
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Chicago area business leaders strongly believe that donating to a local politician or hiring a high-powered lobbyist adds to the city’s already serious corruption problems. But, according to a new survey, they overwhelmingly also believe that paying to play works. The survey also finds that business leaders by an 8-to-1 margin say that “things in Chicago are . . . off on the wrong track,” with 79 percent negative and just 10 percent positive. The online survey of 428 Chicago-area decision-makers was conducted by Crain’s Custom Media in May for the Committee of Economic Development of the Conference Board, a nonpartisan, business-led policy group. Those polled by email indicated that their companies had at least $1 million in revenue last year and that they either hold a top management slot or serve on the firm’s board. The results “are indicative of the constant sort of low-level scandals that seem to happen on a regular basis in Chicago,” said committee senior advisor Cindy Canary, a well known local reformer. “I don’t think we’re going to see corporate leaders unilaterally disarming,” she added. “But I do think people can come to the table to discuss reform.” Overall, these business execs have a low opinion of Chicago government. For instance, 92 percent say that the influence of money in Chicago politics is “bad,” with a majority of 53 percent indicating things are getting worse. Similarly, 88 percent say the “ethical behavior” of Chicago officials over the past five years is at least a “somewhat serious issue,” 92 percent say big campaign donors add to Chicago corruption, 93 percent say that lobbying city officials impacts the level of city corruption, and 92 percent agree that the city suffers from “crony capitalism . . . favoritism in the form of tax breaks, government grants and other incentives.” Asked whether officials listen more to voters or lobbyists, 81 percent answer lobbyists.)

http://www.nbcchicago.com/blogs/ward-room/Donald-Trump-Fundraiser-Chicago–386332871.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump will host a big-ticket fundraiser Tuesday in Chicago, his first campaign trip to the Windy City since his canceled rally at the UIC Pavilion in March erupted in protests and fights. Tickets for the event range from $10,000 to $100,000, according to Lynn Sweet of the Chicago Sun-Times. The lunch fundraiser will be held at an undisclosed location. Donors making a $10,000 donation to Trump’s campaign will receive a ticket for Tuesday’s lunch, while a $25,000 donation yields two tickets and a photo opportunity. The biggest ticket, $100,000, gets donors access to a VIP roundtable, photo opportunity and two tickets to the lunch. Trump last visited Chicago in the lead-up to the March 15 primary. The divisive billionaire cancelled a rally at the last minute after protesters and supporters clashed at the UIC Pavilion, where the event was scheduled to take place. Nevertheless, Trump won the state’s Republican primary with nearly 39 percent of the vote. Trump’s campaign was short on details about Tuesday’s event, only noting that it was “closed to the press.” The event is being hosted by Trump Victory Illinois finance chairman Ron Gidwitz, a powerful GOP fundraiser in Illinois. Trump’s opponent, presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, will host her own big-ticket fundraiser Wednesday in Wilmette. The fundraiser will be hosted by Cubs co-owner Laura Ricketts and her wife, Brooke.)

— GOP platform fight gets heated over LGBT rights – Jonathan Easley
http://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/287271-gop-platform-fight-gets-heated-over-lgbt-rights
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Republicans crafting a party platform on Monday argued over religious liberty, gay marriage and LGBT rights, highlighting divisions in the party over social issues. Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus and Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), chairman of the Platform Committee, floated in and out of conference rooms at the cavernous Huntington Convention Center to oversee the skirmishes that broke out among delegates over the party’s planks. The most heated exchanges took place in a subcommittee responsible for laying out the GOP platform on social issues. The majority of the panel was made up of hard-line social conservatives such as Family Research Council President Tony Perkins. Perkins and other social conservatives on the panel had a strong enough majority to push through the bulk of the measures they sought. But the Perkins wing was met with vocal opposition from Annie Dickerson, an adviser to billionaire GOP donor Paul Singer, who is a proponent of gay marriage and other issues championed by the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. Dickerson fumed as her socially liberal proposals went down and the socially conservative measures she opposed sailed through the subcommittee. At one point, Dickerson, who has adopted children, accused others on the committee of “blatant discrimination” over an amendment that would keep publicly funded adoption agencies from giving custody of children to gay couples. “We need children to be adopted, so hooray to the gay community for trying to raise children in a happy and stable home,” Dickerson said. “I object to allowing patent discrimination against gays over the right to adopt. … This is blatant discrimination and should not be in our platform.”  Dickerson lost that battle and essentially every other battle she waged. At times she stared down Perkins and expressed exasperation after votes went against her. “Unbelievable,” she said after the adoption measure passed. The 16-member subcommittee, made up of 13 women and three men, rejected Dickerson’s request to remove language in the platform that “salutes” states like North Carolina for passing controversial bathroom laws that critics say discriminate against transgender people. She protested language that said the party supports “traditional marriage and the families a husband and wife create,” arguing instead for a provision that said children should be “raised in a loving and stable home.”  And she argued against having language in the platform that opposes the Supreme Court ruling legalizing same-sex marriage. “They’re not going to change the ruling,” Dickerson said. “I know it’s hard, but that’s the law of the land.” But Dickerson was overpowered every step of the way, winning only occasional support from a handful of other women on the panel. One delegate cited the Ten Commandments to argue against Dickerson’s proposal to remove language from the platform about how a “mother and father” provide the best environment in which to raise children. “The social code of justice for the last 5,000 years is based on the Ten Commandments, which says ‘mother and father,’ ” the delegate said. “I just don’t think you can dispute that.” Discussions about social issues also sprang up in the subcommittee tasked with developing the party’s economic plank. Ohio delegate David Johnson, who owns a small business in the state, criticized what he characterized as federal government overreach in responding to transgender bathroom laws. “I hope we’re not getting this politically correct crap about transgender bathrooms,” he said during a debate about how to word a business nondiscrimination clause. “Any press person who comes to me and says, do you support that? My answer is no. If we’re telling employers to make provisions for 16 different people—“ “You’d have 16 different bathrooms,” another delegate said. “However, we do support nondiscrimination,” responded Andy Puzder, the chairman of the subcommittee and CEO of CKE Restaurants, which owns the Carl’s Jr. and Hardees brands. Republican Party leaders are working to hammer out a platform that stays true to core conservative principles while also fitting the mold of their unconventional presumptive presidential nominee and the nation’s rapidly changing culture.)

Evidence: Illinois hasn’t backed a Republican presidential candidate since 1988. Clinton led Trump by 25 percentage points in a poll in early March. Trump’s own political director is not focusing on the state, and the Republican National Committee has not sent any paid staffers. Advantage: Clinton. — Draft GOP platform drops call for marriage amendment – CNN  (DIERSEN: Of course, needless-to-say, Democrats and Democrat plants, Libertarians and Libertarian plants, Greens and Green plants, and RINOs want to destroy the Republican Party. They want the Republican Party platform to promote LGBTQ activity, abortion, mass/illegal immigration, pot, abolition of the Second Amendment, race and gender based preference giving, gambling, etc.)
http://www.centralillinoisproud.com/news/draft-gop-platform-drops-call-for-marriage-amendment
(FROM THE ARTICLE: And in a major shift, the platform would drop the pursuit of a constitutional amendment that would define marriage as between a man and a woman, opting instead to oppose the Supreme Court decision legalizing same-sex marriage and calling on the matter to be decided by the states. . .The language was shared with members of the Platform Committee by the Republican National Committee at an orientation on Sunday night as the events in Cleveland began. The document will form the basis of discussions for the panel, which will meet this week to adapt the language and vote on a final proposal, which will then go before the full convention next week.)

INSIDE HIGHER EDUCATION
— College and the New Class Divide  Contrary to college standing as an open thoroughfare for Americans wanting to improve their lives, it has become a gated toll road primarily available to those from middle-class and upper-class families, argues Jeffrey J. Williams. (DIERSEN: Neither of my outstanding parents attended college.  My father was the first of his ancestors to earn a high school diploma.  My mother never attended high school.  Nevertheless, my critics/opponents shout that I was born with a silver spoon in my mouth and that I have always been privileged.)
https://www.insidehighered.com/views/2016/07/11/how-college-helping-create-class-divide-america-essay
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Those who have gone to college beget those who go to college: if your parents didn’t go to college, you are much more likely to work at or near minimum wage. Only about 9 percent of those from the lowest quartile of wealth complete college degrees, whereas about three-quarters from the top quartile do. A key impediment has been the exponential rise of tuition prices since the 1970s, at several times the rate of inflation, correlated with the reduction of public support, which in turn has brought the steep increase in student debt and student work hours.)

NEW YORK DAILY NEWS
— The 1960s all over again? History isn’t quite repeating, but our tumultuous time does rhyme with that one in some strange ways – Todd Gitlin  (DIERSEN: What were you doing during 1968? I was a full-time student at UIC and a part-time Park Forest Post Office employee; I lived with my parents and bother in Crete; I sold my 1968 Oldsmobile 442 and bought a 1969 Dodge Charger SE; and I saved money for college expenses at NIU.)
http://www.nydailynews.com/opinion/todd-gitlin-1960s-article-1.2704848
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Here’s what happened within four months in 1968: Eighty thousand North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops seized the initiative by attacking some 100 cities and towns in a war that the Pentagon kept insisting was all but won. An unrepentant racist declared his candidacy for President of the United States. Having been challenged by two sitting senators, one of them the brother of the murdered former President, President Lyndon Johnson took himself out of the running for a second term. One killer murdered Martin Luther King, Jr. Another one murdered Bobby Kennedy, who just won California’s Democratic primary. And after a wave of urban riots, or rebellions, or whatever you wanted to call them, Americans stockpiled guns. Lunatic fringes thrived in the heart of established institutions. What was the war in Vietnam in the first place, after all, if not a lunatic war? What was the casual police beating of black motorists? Moods followed events. Events that had taken place in the dark, backstage, were now onscreen in living rooms. Nothing felt normal. Americans woke up every morning thinking, My God, what next? Jefferson Airplane had already recorded the line: “Logic and proportion have fallen sloppy dead.” Was it the end of times? The apocalypse? The revolution? The counterrevolution? From day to day, all that was predictable was that something unpredictable was on its way from hell.)
