(FROM THE ARTICLE: On Tuesday, New Yorkers — by a slight majority, but a majority nonetheless — endorsed Zohran Mamdani and the proud, unrepentant form of socialism he champions as the answer to, as least as he presents it, all of their woes. “We will prove that there is no problem too large for government to solve, and no concern too small for it to care about,” Mamdani declared during his victory speech, an inversion of Ronald Reagan’s famous truism. At least some of the Big Apple’s lurch to the far left is attributable to the 34-year-old’s undeniable political talent. But there are greater, or — to be blunt — more sinister forces at work. Most insidious of all are two intertwined lies: that Americans today have it worse than their forebearers and that their wealthy peers bear the blame for their plight. Campaigning is the art of hearing people, and Mamdani heard New Yorkers better than anyone. They and their countrymen remain alarmed by the cost of living across a wide variety of goods and services: from housing, to groceries, to child care to transportation. These are real concerns that no voter should be ashamed of expressing and every politician worth their salt ought to devote their time and energy to alleviating. These justifiable feelings have been unjustly compounded, though, by progressives’ relentless demoralization campaign. Want to buy a house? Not in this economy, they say. Need health care? Good luck. Are you hopeful your kids will enjoy a better life than you did? They won’t. Never mind whether any of that is true, these claims are meant to discourage Americans into handing more power over to the government — and it’s working. Moreover, the treatment Mamdani and his comrades propose will make New Yorkers’ real problems worse. Instead of telling his soon-to-be constituents that they are the masters of their own lives — and trying to cultivate the necessary conditions for them to improve their lot — the mayor-elect’s message to his followers is that they have somehow been gipped. His celebration of his ticket to Gracie Mansion on Tuesday included denunciations of “bad landlords” and “billionaires,” as well the assertion, “For as long as we can remember, the working people of New York have been told by the wealthy and the well-connected that power does not belong in their hands.” Blame games It is tempting to buy into the blame game that Mamdani has turned into such a potent weapon. To some, it comes as a great relief to believe that every errant degree they’ve pursued, every frivolous dollar they’ve spent, indeed, every mistake they’ve ever made can be chalked up to some successful person or entity pulling a fast one over them. And to hear that it is someone else’s job to get them back on track. But then again, this message — disguised as it is by flowery language, a remarkable faux generosity of spirit and seemingly optimistic utopianism — is actually astonishingly bleak. What Zohran Mamdani and his fellow travelers are telling people is that they live in a dystopia in which they lack the power to better themselves. That they’re being dragged down by anchors from which only the government can free them. And if they can’t do anything about their problems, why should they try? This accountability-free approach is alluring at first glance, but a shortfall of self-responsibility always leads to a surplus of self-loathing. Moreover, the socialist dream has been, paradoxically, kept alive by American politicians’ already pernicious spending habits. Contrary to Mamdani’s claims, the United States has hardly been practicing trickle-up austerity. As of this week, America owes its creditors over $38 trillion. Is it any wonder that voters — who have yet to suffer the worst consequences of the debt crisis — wonder why they shouldn’t receive free health care, child care, transportation and more for this substantial cost? Holding people back The charge is even more curious in New York, where the city and state enjoy ritual increases passed as a matter of course by its homogenous, left-wing leaders, who have saddled their constituents with countless taxes, regulations and union concessions — you know, the kind of malignant nuisances that actually hold people back. Mamdani wants to worsen the housing crisis with price controls; why not unshackle its builders instead? Rather than stripping gifted students of opportunities to excel, why not extend the offer to more? And if there are a dearth of well-paying jobs in the city, shouldn’t he be trying to attract, rather than antagonize, employers? The siren song of socialism always begins so beautifully. The extravagant promises, the dearth of trade-offs: It’s John Lennon’s “Imagine” come to life. But Americans had best plug their ears and look past the fog to the rocky shores ahead. Because they, not the bogeymen of Mamdani’s campaign, are at the helm.)

The answer comes in two parts, beginning with the rise of equity in America. Equity is a sleek euphemism that’s gained cultural rizz for Progressive Americans who believe the future lies in a virulent form of social Marxism that’s cloaked in woke cultural rizz of transgender rights, social justice, equality, fairness, tolerance, critical race theory, DEI, anti-racism, white supremacy, and systemic inequality. It’s an expansion of Marxist theory, transformed by critical theory and postmodern philosophy, which connects with the emotions of those who suffer the harsh realities of inner-city poverty and violence perpetrated by generations of Leftist policy. Rather than take responsibility for the urban decay that undeniably spews from their liberalism, Democrats turned to equity’s neo-Marxist message, declaring that the suffrage in New York was the result genocidal oppression of America’s Western, Judeo-Christian, capitalist ideals (enforced by the fascist Trump administration) that created the endless inequalities of wealth, education, race, crime, incarceration, gender, sexual preference, patriarchy, and white supremacy that were systemically devouring inner-city New Yorkers. Equity was the only solution to end inequalities, because it would ensure comprehensive equal outcomes for all by imposing economic justice, tolerance, gender freedom, absolute sexual liberation, and anti-racism; it’s the last great hope of liberating humanity. Mamdani claimed his vision could deliver New York, which resonated with those who suffered from inner-city decay and despair. Equity has captured the minds of New Yorkers because it offers a new moral vision of “hope” and unlimited freedom, as a nation facing an existential crisis leaves Christianity in record numbers. People who need a new secular religion to replace Christianity were drawn to equity’s promise to bring justice and deliverance of a progressive and permissive post-Christian society. Everyone who suffered the oppression of poverty, hunger, incarceration, white supremacy, homophobia, and transphobia would thrive in racial and economic equality. They would be equally free to choose the lifestyle they want and the pleasure they deserve, all without condemnation. And the rich are finally going to surrender their wealth to pay for it all. The Left, and many in America, are buying in. It boggles the mind that this genocidal narrative that’s failed all through history has become truth in the uncritical mind. But the Left has abandoned reason for the post-truth world of emotions, a second critical point that led to Mamdani’s win. We live in a post-truth world where feelings and emotions determine reality, and facts and reason no longer matter. Today, the feelings, preferences, and desires that confirm our pre-existing narratives and cognitive biases define our individual “truths.” It’s the consequence of the postmodern movement’s quiet destruction of reason and rational thought, which has successfully undermined our confidence that truth exists and that facts, data, logic, and common sense accurately describe the world. Philosophers argued that rationalism could not intrinsically justify its claim that facts were derived from objective reality. There was no objective truth; facts were simply beliefs and opinions in a world of moral relativism. Postmodernism’s successful destruction of truth left humanity in a bind. People needed another way to interpret the world once they left rationalism behind. Emotivism, which argued that preferences, attitudes, or feelings determined all our value judgments, replaced truth and reason as post-truth became the choice of a nation determined to bask in the glow of its emotions. Today, the death of facts has liberated the world from the inconvenience of verification or falsification; “truth” is whatever aligns with feelings, emotions, and preferences. Ben Shapiro’s “Facts don’t care about your feelings” is a reaction to post-truth’s devastating effect on the nation. What happens when you offer equity as liberation to a vast number of people who have little hope of escaping the suffering and rely on their emotions to confirm predetermined anti-Western narratives? They accept it as reality without critical evaluation because a post-truth world doesn’t rely on the facts of failed Leftist policies. Feelings convince them that their suffering is caused by the racism, greed, and religious bigotry imposed under decades of Republican fascism. It is a perfect storm to resonate within the hearts of those who suffer generations of poverty, violence, and the loss of hope. This is how Mamdani won: his rise in New York followed the same path that brought Lenin, Stalin, Mao, and Pol Pot to power. They promised to rescue the suffering masses, yet the masses didn’t understand political theory or have the capacity to comprehend what Marxism meant for their future. Critical thinking wasn’t part of the equation; they wanted an end to their pain and suffering imposed by the heavy hands of the Tsars and the oligarchs of their day. They trusted anyone who offered deliverance from oppression and the promise of unlimited freedom and prosperity. One can hardly blame them, yet they suffered beyond imagination for generations. Over 100 million died and nearly all experienced starvation, torture, imprisonment, and, most importantly of all, the near-total loss of their freedom. We must come to terms with the implications of Mamdani’s victory. It would be easy to rationalize it as New York’s momentary loss of sanity, telling ourselves that the communist new dark age that tormented the USSR, China, and Cambodia could never happen here. But, as Mamdani’s win shows us, anything is possible in a post-truth world of pain and suffering. Even here in America.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: When Mike Lindell, the chief executive of MyPillow and the founder of the upstart digital news site LindellTV, recently heard about the chance to secure a Pentagon press credential, he immediately applied for four. The outlet, which strongly supports the Trump administration and is known for promoting election conspiracy theories, already had accredited journalists stationed at the White House and in Congress. The Pentagon would be a perfect capstone, he thought. “We’re going to make them proud,” he said about the administration in an interview. It has been nearly three weeks since dozens of legacy outlets — including The New York Times, The Washington Post and the three major broadcast news networks — Fox News and Newsmax surrendered press passes that gave their journalists access to the Pentagon. They did so after declining to sign on to new rules that, according to many media lawyers, curbed their First Amendment rights to report on the military. Many of those outlets have continued aggressive coverage of the military from outside the Pentagon since then. In their place, a fresh crop of news media has stepped forward to occupy the Pentagon’s tightly circumscribed press areas, ones with a strikingly different philosophy when it comes to traditional journalistic notions about the fourth estate and holding truth to power. The Pentagon said it would not release a list of the outlets in the changing press corps, but The Times was able to identify a dozen of them. They range from widely popular right-wing podcasts to niche publications largely focused on issues like abortion, but are similar in their unwavering support for the Trump administration and the firm belief that ruffling government feathers is decidedly not part of the job description. “We’re there for the big-ticket narrative stuff,” Raheem Kassam, editor in chief of the National Pulse, a part of the new Pentagon press detachment, wrote in a text message. He called his publication “basically an industry mag/site for MAGA world.” Initially, the National Pulse’s eyes and ears in the Pentagon will be Will Upton, who worked in the Treasury Department during the first Trump administration and has been a frequent and vocal critic of traditional journalists, whom he has characterized as partisan actors. Laura Loomer, the influential pro-Trump activist, said in a post on X late on Monday that she would be joining the Pentagon press corps, writing that she looks forward to “breaking more stories that impact our country and our national security.” News of her accreditation was reported earlier by The Washington Post. Other new arrivals include LifeSite News, a Catholic advocacy publication, whose Pentagon reporter is a former aide to Representative Paul Gosar, an Arizona Republican, and has been accused of making antisemitic and misogynistic remarks; RedState, owned by the Christian radio giant Salem Media, whose reporter was the communications director for James O’Keefe, the right-wing hidden camera journalist who founded Project Veritas; and Gateway Pundit, a site that often has spread conspiracy theories, which will have two military correspondents, including one who is perhaps best known for her work pushing for pardons for participants in the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021. David Schulz, director of Yale Law School’s Media Freedom and Information Access Clinic, who serves as legal counsel for the Pentagon Press Association, said that the new rules amounted to an effort to limit what journalists could report and that the new outlets had pro-Trump leanings in common. “These new regulations are really not about national security,” Mr. Schulz said. “They’re about controlling viewpoint and content.” In a statement, Sean Parnell, the chief Defense Department spokesman, said the traditional news outlets had misrepresented the policy. “The so-called ‘journalists’ staged a self-deportation and filmed their theatrics,” he said. “We are proud to see the new wave of highly motivated journalists, who value truth, occupy the Correspondents Corridor.” Mr. Parnell had previously said in a social media post that the newcomers amounted to more than 60 journalists, roughly equivalent to the number of traditional reporters who handed in their badges on Oct. 15. A handful of outlets that had been in the Pentagon press corps previously, including The Epoch Times and One America News Network, agreed to sign the policy and have remained there. Mr. Parnell’s post prompted announcements from outlets that said they would be getting credentials, among them Human Events and the Post Millennial, sister sites that share a single owner and frequent contributions from Jack Posobiec, the well-known podcaster and Navy veteran who has a close relationship with numerous Trump administration officials, including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. “We repealed and replaced the press pool,” Mr. Posobiec said in a recent interview on Real America’s Voice, which itself said on X that it would be getting a Pentagon credential. Libby Emmons, editor in chief of Human Events and the Post Millennial, said she had requested four passes for her staff and signed the new Pentagon press policy. “There should be a place for reporting on what they are doing without always trying to expose the dark underbelly,” Ms. Emmons said. “And that’s part of why I said sure, I’ll sign your thing and come check it out.” Major Washington outposts — Congress, the White House, the State Department and the Pentagon — have long had their own press corps: packs of print reporters, television correspondents and their camera crews, who hover in the hallways and tag along with officials as they travel. President Trump and his appointees have often criticized the journalists who follow them on a daily basis, but until now, the administration has never gone so far as to effectively remake an entire press corps. “I’ve never seen anything like that, and it doesn’t seem to resemble anything from a team that respects an actual independent press corps,” said Eric Schultz, who served as a press aide under President Barack Obama. Ms. Emmons said she had received an unsolicited invitation to apply for credentials after the legacy journalists refused to sign the new rules. “We value what the press does every single day, but unfortunately we have seen a lot of the mainstream media continue to lie,” Kingsley Wilson, Defense Department spokeswoman, said in an interview that same day with Frontlines, a media arm of Turning Point USA. That outlet subsequently announced that it, too, would be joining the new Pentagon media crew. Several of those joining the new press corps live nowhere near the nation’s capital, even though the department’s published policies say credentialed correspondents should be at the Pentagon, just outside Washington, “at least three times a month.” Tim Pool, the beanie-wearing right-wing podcaster, said on X that he did “not intend to maintain a significant presence in the Pentagon” after disclosing that his outlet, Timcast Media, was also getting a credential. Last year, a federal investigation revealed that Mr. Pool was paid to produce videos for a company that was secretly funded by the Russian government. Mr. Pool, who was not charged, has claimed he was unaware of where the payments, which amounted to $100,000 per video, came from. Under the new policy, journalists could get in trouble — and even lose access permanently — for soliciting government employees to “violate the law by providing confidential government information.” Securing confidential information is the bread and butter of accountability reporting and has produced some of the most important journalism of the past century. There are few signs, however, that the reconstituted Pentagon press corps has aspirations to test the limits of those rules. Mr. Pool, on his podcast, said, “We are not an investigative news organization.” He added: “We do not have journalists meeting with sources in parking garages while they kick over a manila folder with secret documents. We don’t do any of that.” Mr. Lindell, for his part, said he would “follow the rules to the T,” echoing the contention by Pentagon officials that leaks — even of nonclassified information — are a threat to national security. “We would never do anything like the mainstream media does to jeopardize our country,” he added.)

Celina Villanueva of Chicago, described as “the reality of the pain and the cruelty and the inhumanity that’s being inflicted on my community, on my district, on the communities in this state — that are also American — for the simple fact of looking the way that I do.” “I’m going to fight back,” she said on the Senate floor late Thursday, shortly before the bill passed 40-18. The Illinois House passed the legislation 75-32 a little more than an hour later. In a sign of lawmakers’ frustration with the federal agents’ tactics, damages under the lawsuit provision could go up due to various factors. They include whether the defendant wore a mask; used crowd control equipment like tear gas; failed to identify themselves as a law enforcement officer; used a vehicle without an Illinois license plate; or failed to turn on a necessary body camera — all behaviors advocates and Democratic lawmakers have accused immigration agents of since the start of “Operation Midway Blitz” under the administration of President Donald Trump. It doesn’t impede ICE from “doing its job lawfully,” Harmon told his colleagues on the Senate floor. But in the floor debate Thursday, Senate GOP Leader John Curran of Downers Grove called those aggravating factors for damages a form of overreach. “You are … teeing this up for the Supreme Court to set this aside. You’re actually making it easy on them,” Curran said. Violators who arrest individuals improperly at or near a courthouse would face civil damages for false imprisonment and $10,000 in statutory damages, according to the bill. A judge can also issue an order preventing arrest under the provision, according to the bill. “When witnesses or parties don’t come to court, it doesn’t just affect them. In addition to the provisions on courts and private actions, the bill also asks hospitals, day care centers and higher education institutions to put policies on the books about how they would respond to the presence of federal immigration agents, following incidents of ICE activity at or near some of those locations across the Chicago area. It would also largely prohibit hospitals, day care centers and higher education institutions from disclosing the immigration status of patients, clients and students. Hospitals would be fined $500 per day for noncompliance if they fail to meet the deadlines for developing their policies during the first quarter of next year. The higher education provisions on immigration status could be enforced through private lawsuits. And violations of the day care policy requirement would result in a licensing violation, according to the bill. Democratic state Sen. Omar Aquino, of Chicago, 2nd District, sponsored the day care provisions after his child’s day care center went into lockdown because of nearby immigration enforcement activity, he said. “Our kids were fine, but families were in fear because they didn’t know what to do,” Aquino said. “Here in the state, we must do something to make sure that no family feels that way. The package put forward this week doesn’t include a ban on masks for federal officers, as California enacted, or any expansions of Illinois’ existing law that generally bans local law enforcement from cooperating on civil immigration actions. At a subject matter hearing on the legislation Thursday, representatives from local law enforcement pushed back on parts of the legislation, including the private right of action for constitutional violations, over concerns that local officers could get swept up. “There’s going to be frivolous litigation that will be filed against state and local law enforcement officers,” even if it’s eventually thrown out, said Jim Kaitschuk, executive director of the Illinois Sheriffs’ Association. Pritzker, for his part, on Thursday in his ceremonial Springfield office, called on top federal immigration officials, including Border Patrol boss Greg Bovino, to pause their activities for the Halloween weekend. “Mr. Bovino, your operation has sown fear and division and chaos among law-abiding residents in our communities,” Pritzker said. “No child in America should have to go trick-or-treating in fear that they might be confronted with armed federal agents and have to inhale tear gas.” At a news conference in Gary, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem dismissed Pritzker’s call for the Halloween pause. “The fact that Gov. Pritzker is asking for that is shameful and I think unfortunate that he doesn’t recognize how important the work is that we do to make sure we’re bringing criminals to justice and getting them off our streets — especially when we’re going to send all of our kiddos out on the streets and going to events and enjoying the holiday season. JB Pritzker’s warnings about an increasingly aggressive federal campaign targeting Chicago-area communities. The 12:40 a.m. vote capped a busy last day of the General Assembly session in which lawmakers also passed bills to expand clean-energy projects and lower costs for consumers, and fund public transit systems across the Chicago region — “The transformation bill,” as state Rep. Kam Buckner called it. That vote came just before the House wrapped at 2:35 a.m. The Senate wrapped up even later. About the immigration enforcement bill: It designates “safe zones” around schools, hospitals and courthouses, and allows Illinois residents to sue immigration agents who violate their constitutional rights, including for false imprisonment or unlawful detention. “This bill is a statement on behalf of the legislature to say that what ICE is doing is unacceptable,” said Democratic Sen. Celina Villanueva, one of the bill’s sponsors. Behind the gentle façade that Democrats expose to the public lies a political motivation. The number of House representatives that states send to Congress is based on the state’s population. The U.S. Census has traditionally counted individuals in the country regardless of citizenship status. During his first term, President Trump changed this in a memorandum saying, “For the purpose of the reapportionment of representatives following the 2020 Census, it is the policy of the United States to exclude from the apportionment base aliens who are not in a lawful immigration status under the Immigration and Nationality Act.” Biden revised Trump’s immigration policies and made sure illegal aliens were included in the 2020 Census. Blue state governors and mayors attract illegal aliens to their sanctuaries with promises of cash, health care, food, and shelter. The more illegal immigrants that reside in a state, the more representatives the state will receive. Electoral votes are based on the number of representatives a state has, so presidential elections are also impacted. Democrats will admit illegal aliens, verse them in liberal activism, and make them citizens who vote for their Democrat sponsors. In his farewell address, President Washington warned of a dangerous political faction attempting, “to subvert the power of the people and to usurp for themselves the reins of government”. The American people elected President Trump to defend the republic from the Democrats’ subversive scheme. During the 2024 campaign, Trump promised the largest deportation effort in U.S. history. Democrats now fight the government to keep their scheme in place and bring it to fruition. New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy is “willing to fight to the death” to protect illegal aliens in his state. Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker draws moral equivalence between Trump’s immigration policies and Hitler sending Jews to death camps. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz called ICE agents, “a modern day Gestapo.” These governors and a plethora of other Democrat politicians are toeing the party line. The politburo ordered the border open and allowed millions of aliens into the country. Democrats spent hundreds of billions of dollars to attract these aliens even though they overwhelmed the legal and social infrastructure of their states. Yet one of the primary reasons for Democrats’ loss to Trump was their inane immigration policy. After expending huge sums of money and political capital, Democrats are now using all available means to keep illegal aliens in their sanctuaries. ICE and other federal agents enforcing immigration law find themselves in difficult situations. Democrats have threatened to release an app that tracks the movement of ICE agents. Blue state politicians are not only undermining ICE but call on their constituents to actively interfere with the work of federal agencies. This is obstruction of justice. More seriously, Democrats are inviting liberal activists to engage in violent behavior to assure illegal aliens remain in their states. A cross-sectional group that has worn Che t-shirts and clutched Mao’s Little Red Book believing that “political power grows out of the barrel of a gun,” while visions of the Weather Underground dance in their heads is a group willing to do whatever it takes to advance the cause. Far left groups search for reasons to launch a revolution. When Democrat politicians paint Trump as a fascist who will suspend the 2028 election and make himself king, leftist lunatics will resolve the matter with violence. At least two attempts have been made to assassinate Trump. Charlie Kirk, the bright future of the conservative movement, was killed by an assassin who etched “hey, fascist! CATCH!” on bullet casings found with the gun used to kill him. Mexican drug cartels have placed bounties on the heads of ICE agents. A Minnesota man was recently arrested for posting an offer of $45,000 for the death of Attorney General Pam Bondi on the internet. Radical leftists have attacked ICE facilities all over the country. The John Brown Gun Club is a Marxist organization dedicated to the proposition of revolution. After Kirk’s assassination, the Club’s Washington DC branch advertised with a flyer reading, “Hey, fascist! Catch” to attract new members. Willem van Spronsen, a member of the Puget Sound branch, was killed in Seattle in 2019 while attacking an ICE detention facility with Molotov cocktails, armed with a semiautomatic rifle. Van Spronsen proudly proclaimed, “I am antifa.” Leftist groups will riot against any version of oppression anyone can conjure. Last year it was Palestine, this year immigration, who knows what comes next? They are the gasoline that leftist politicians, educators, and media have distilled. A cadre of Democrat politicians play with fire, striking matches as they dance blithely around their volatile followers. The basis of our political system is the rule of law. Enforcement of immigration law is the responsibility of the federal government. Democrats have thumbed their noses at the law and demand that Trump do the same. Trump will enforce the law because it is the right thing to do and enforcement fulfills a promise he made to the American people. It is likely Democrats will continue to ratchet up the pressure. The daily headlines have this column almost writing itself. In the Commonwealth of Virginia, we have the recent revelations of Democratic candidate for attorney general, Jay Jones, sending text messages to a colleague in 2022 wishing that someone would put “two bullets” in the head of then-Republican Speaker of the House of Delegates, Todd Gilbert. Jones went on to say that Gilbert and his wife were raising their two toddlers to be “little fascists,” that Gilbert was a “POS” whose grave he wished to “piss on,” and that he wished one of Gilbert’s children would die in his mother’s arms. He could be my state’s next chief law enforcement officer. Then, in the state of New Jersey, we have Democratic gubernatorial candidate Rebecca Michelle “Mikie” Sherrill facing questions over the circumstances of the discipline she received while a Naval Academy midshipman, which reportedly prevented her from walking with her class at graduation. Ms. Sherrill, who serves as a congresswoman from New Jersey, apparently graduated from Annapolis and went on to serve as a Navy helicopter pilot. Her military service was honorable, and perhaps whatever her infraction was — apparently a cheating scandal involving a number of midshipmen on an engineering exam — should not be disqualifying for the governorship. However, the voters of New Jersey are entitled to make that decision based on a full airing of the evidence. To date, Sherrill has refused to release her disciplinary records from the Academy, which would go a long way toward clearing the air. As they say in Washington, it’s not the crime – it’s the cover-up. As long as she refuses to release the records, the issue remains a cancer on her campaign. Ms. Sherrill had to have known that this issue lurking in her background would likely come back to haunt her campaign for governor, given the harsh light of a gubernatorial election in a major state. Perhaps her prior successful campaigns for Congress convinced her the Academy scandal was behind her. The opposition research, however, for the governorship of the Garden State, which has been hotly contested in recent years, is likely much more robust than the one in a less well-funded congressional contest. Another Democratic candidate for a powerful seat is in the glare of the Klieg lights. This time it is Bernie Sanders-endorsed Marine Corps veteran Graham Platner, who is vying for the Democratic nomination to replace the U.S. senator from Maine, Susan Collins, in that state’s 2026 Senate race. Mr. Platner was discovered to have posted a number of things on Reddit that haven’t aged very well. When you’re running in a statewide race to be Maine’s next U.S. senator, for example, it’s probably best not to have posted online that rural Mainers are “actually” racist and stupid, as the Washington Post reported Mr. Platner to have written in 2020. The Post also reported that Mr. Platner had described himself as a “Communist” on the Reddit platform. Now, I know that the Democratic Party’s “New Left” has taken a hard turn toward Karl Marx, but even New York’s radical mayoral candidate, Zohran Mamdani, tries to distance himself from the Communist label. I can’t imagine that the denizens of the Pine Tree State are ready to embrace a self-avowed Communist. But things really veered toward darkness when it was revealed that Mr. Platner had the famed Nazi symbol of a skull-and-bones known as the Totenkopf (Death’s Head) tattooed on his chest. In what had to be one of the most disingenuous political spin jobs ever, Mr. Platner claimed not to have realized it was a Nazi symbol when he was in the Corps and had himself inked while in Croatia with some buddies. Problem is, Mr. Platner reportedly told a friend in D.C. ten years ago, “Oh, this is my Totenkopf.” Even Platner’s former political director, Genevieve MacDonald, who resigned last week over the disaster, said, “He’s not an idiot, he’s a military history buff.” Even worse than the political spin was perhaps the worst tattoo clean-up job ever, in which Mr. Platner had some shlock tattoo artist stick some legs and a dog’s head on the skull, now telling Vanity Fair the tattoo is “a Celtic knot with a dog.” Okaaayyyy… As my brother, Jim, hilariously said to me, it looks like a tick that was irradiated at Chernobyl. Get a lot of popcorn as the Democratic Party scrambles to field candidates over the next year or two. The party is in a bad way and scraping the barrel’s bottom. Several decades ago, I was an investigator for a prominent D.C. investigative firm that was hired by politicians to do opposition research on their opponents. One prominent Democrat considering a run for president had us do a self-due diligence of him in which I was involved. Smart man. Protecting their identity is one way to prevent bad actors from targeting their homes and threatening their families.
