(FROM THE ARTICLE: President Barack Obama will open an office in Washington, D.C., after he leaves the White House on Jan. 20, and the Chicago-based Obama Foundation is considering opening a branch office here, the Chicago Sun-Times has learned. “As a former president, President Obama will have office space in Washington, D.C., when he leaves office,” said Amy Brundage, an Obama spokeswoman, referring to the official office funded by taxpayers for former presidents. The federal government covers the costs of offices and a small staff for former presidents, plus a pension and other compensation for travel, an acknowledgement of the role — albeit not official — former presidents serve after they are no longer in office. For example, according to the General Services Administration, in FY2015, former President George W. Bush received $796,000 to cover health benefits, travel costs, office space, telephone costs, postage, printing costs, other services, supplies and materials, and equipment. “This was the highest amount of any former President for that year,” the Congressional Research Service noted in a March 2016 report covering the federal benefits provided to former presidents and their widows. As a former president, Obama will receive a $205,700 annual pension — and that’s after just eight years on the job. The pension is paid monthly with eligibility beginning at noon on Jan. 20, after President-elect Donald Trump takes the oath of office. Obama will get his pension check monthly. The Obama family is remaining in Washington after they move out of the White House, renting a home in the Kalorama neighborhood here. The family is staying in Washington until Sasha, 15, a sophomore at the private Sidwell Friends school here, graduates from high school. So while Obama and first lady Michelle are locating their Obama Center, a library and museum complex, in Jackson Park on Chicago’s South Side, Obama’s taxpayer funded office, for now at least, will also remain in Washington. The Washington Post reported that Obama is renting space in a building owned by an environmental group, the World Wildlife Fund, at 1250 24th St. NW, not far from the Kalorama residence. Former presidents have no rules binding them when it comes to locating their taxpayer-funded offices. The General Services Administration is authorized to write rent checks for space anywhere in the U.S. The location does not have to be connected to the presidential library or foundation headquarters.)

A new analysis from the Hamilton Project released Monday adds important evidence: Biomarkers of stress have risen much more rapidly for low-income people than for high-income ones. The most recent national data show that life expectancy declined in 2015. Although these statistics are not broken down by income, it’s a good bet that the greatest declines were concentrated among lower- and middle-income people, because for decades gaps in life expectancy by income have been widening — as a National Academy of Sciences panel I co-chaired documented. Our panel was unable to explain why this has been happening, however. A sharper decline in smoking among high-income people is one partial explanation, but this and other identifiable factors can’t account for most of the growing longevity gap. Nick Klitzing said the state GOP on its own found 18 of its emails on the website DCLeaks.com. The New York Times reported the website was an outlet that U.S. intelligence officials and private cybersecurity companies believe was created by a unit controlled by the GRU, Russia’s military intelligence agency. Klitzing said FBI agents raised questions about emails involving the state GOP accounts during their visit. The four email accounts involved were inactive or rarely used, and the hacked emails dated to 2015, long before the 2016 contests for president and Illinois offices, Klitzing said. A review of the emails provided by the state GOP shows the messages were largely rudimentary in nature, ranging from requests for training and local party event invitations to reports and discussion that U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam of Wheaton should be considered a “dark horse” candidate to replace House Speaker John Boehner, a contest ultimately won by U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin. . .The compromised Illinois GOP emails provided to the Tribune were dated from August to October of 2015 and did not involve Trump, Clinton or the presidential contest. The emails were sent to the state Republican Party. The subjects of the compromised emails included a suburban York Township Republican Women’s event; a request by McLean County GOP Chairman Chuck Erickson to attend a county training event that included Erickson’s phone number; and a notification from Mike Bigger, a member of the Illinois Republican State Central Committee, that he would be attending an event “and bringing a $1,000 check” from the Stark County party organization. Other compromised emails included a half-dozen messages from Chicago businessman Peter Smith, chairman of Corporate Venture Alliances LLC, involving the October 2015 GOP contest to replace Boehner as House speaker. Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton) said being inclusive does not necessarily mean being productive. “This is the type of thing that you see happening across higher education everywhere,” Ives told the DuPage Policy Journal. “What they are doing is that they are segregating students based on all sorts of (criteria) such as gender, sex, race and religion. (They are saying) ‘everybody should feel good about themselves for who they are and not based on merit.’ That is completely wrong.” The university, in its goals of inclusivity, has enacted several diversity programs, including holding a “Bystander Intervention/De-Escalation Training” session, taught by a self-described “radical queer feminist activist” and creating an Office of Inclusion and Intercultural Relations (OIIR), dedicated to recruiting and retaining underrepresented students while promoting diversify education and civility, and fostering leadership skills for the global world. Ives said the OIIR contradicts itself via segregation of students, i.e. students are not judged on their merits, but on their background. “That is not very American,” Ives said. “That is not how we built this country. We built this country on hard work and people of all political stripes, all colors and all nations doing their best and succeeding and giving everybody equal opportunity and not an unequal outcome. So this is the University of Illinois along with other universities in the state just running amok.” Ives said the office does not encourage hard work, but instead promotes division. “It’s actually shameful to segregate kids this way,” Ives said. “They should be pushed, to an extent. But as Schock and his lawyers prepare for Monday’s arraignment on corruption charges, they are first firing a free-speech shot charging that the government is illegally attempting to muzzle them from talking in public. Two years ago, from his Capitol Hill office, Congressman Aaron Schock, 35, was celebrating the First Noel. Now, he is fighting for the First Amendment. He was indicted on 24 corruption counts last month after a lengthy investigation. “After the government realized there was no crime, they chose to spend the next 19 months, using two grand juries and millions of taxpayer dollars in an attempt to manufacture a crime,” he said. Now the government has filed a motion for a gag order claiming the judge should “restrict extrajudicial statements that pose a serious and imminent threat to the fairness of a judicial proceeding.” The request for a gag order was aimed not only at Schock, but his attorneys, who said the government made up the case: “Those charges are the culmination of an effort to find something, anything, to pull down Aaron Schock,” George Terwilliger, Schock’s attorney, said. Schock will be arraigned Monday in Springfield on charges he misused government and campaign money, underwriting a lavish lifestyle including the now infamous redecoration of his Washington office to look like the “Downton Abbey” television show. Schock’s argument against the gag order, twice as long as the request itself, observes that “after months of lobbing outrageous accusations…the government comes before this court asking for a gag order to silence Mr. Schock and his attorneys.” They call it an “invasion of core, constitutionally-protected speech.” Targeting a former congressman who once thrived on self-generated publicity, social media depicting his world travels and encounters with the rich, the famous and both. In 1990 the United States Supreme Court, ruling in a case brought by five frustrated job seekers against the Republican Party of Illinois, outlawed political favoritism in all government hiring except for policy-making posts, saying that only merit should count. This was a strange concept in Illinois, where the spoils system had always been rather the point of politics. This spring the issue is heading for the Court again in a different case, and Gov. Jim Edgar, a Republican, filed a brief last month asking the Justices to reverse its ban on government favoritism. He argues that patronage actually helps the democratic system. As another top Republican here, State Representative Lee Daniels, put it, patronage “doesn’t need to be a dirty word.” In response, civil libertarians say it is an embarrassment for the state to have political leaders arguing against meritocracy. “It seems only in Illinois,” said Harvey Grossman, the head of the American Civil Liberties Union office in Chicago, “would state officials be willing to publicly endorse the corrosive practice” of patronage. Somebody needs to run,” Traynere said. “I thought about it, and remembered my father always taught me, ‘Don’t point your finger at someone because then there are three of them pointing back at you.’ Sometimes you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do.” Traynere’s been a Bolingbrook resident since 1970, works as a union organizer and owns a cleaning business with her husband. Claar, who’s making plans to attend Trump’s inauguration Jan. 20, says his 20 years as mayor show he has the backing of the local electorate. About nine months later, she organized the first Age March, a grassroots event in 2010 that brought some 200 participants of all ages to Fort Mason in The City. The 80-year-old San Francisco writer, painter and teacher is eager to talk about the third Age March, which starts at noon Sunday, Dec. 4 at Gough and Union streets, and ends at Union and Fillmore. “We’re going to celebrate age pride and our real ages and fight to end age discrimination,” says Brooker, noting that the issue affects so many aspects of life, from dating to housing to jobs. They had little or no work experience outside of GAO.  They wanted every GAO hire to start at the bottom like they did.  They had an extremely low opinion of executive branch employees and of union members like I had been at IRS for almost 9 years.  They exhibited an extremely low opinion my knowledge of IRS that I had gained by working for IRS for almost 9 years. They stressed that GAO had required me to accept an $18,459 (21%) pay cut in today’s dollars to transfer from IRS to GAO.)
