That enabled me to pay for my college expenses at UIC 1966-1968 and at NIU 1969-1970. That enabled me to graduate debt-free from NIU with a bachelor’s degree in management and owning that Charger in 1970. Neither of my parents attended college. My father was only the first of my ancestors to earn a high school diploma. He fought brittle type 1 diabetes from childhood. He worked in the office of a nasty chemical plant on the east side of Chicago Heights and almost always worked second jobs to pay the family’s bills. My mother never attended high school. Further, ever since I got married in 1978, my critics/opponents have hinted/implied/argued/shouted that I have unfairly benefitted from that marriage. They hint/imply/argue/shout that if I had not gotten married, I would never had been able to pass the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979, earn a master’s degree in accounting in 1980, pass the Certified Internal Auditor examination on my first attempt in 1981, become a licensed COPA in 1981, etc. In my defense, I had earned an MBA in 1976 and I had almost completed the requirements for a master’s degree in accounting in 1978.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: But scratch beneath the surface and you see exactly what Kirsanow warned of: students being taught to see others as members of a racial or social group, not as individuals. Take the “affinity” groups that New Trier High School, just five miles from Evanston High School, created a couple of years ago. It’s one thing for students to come together under shared interests and backgrounds. But it’s another thing for a school district to sanction and promote numerous affiliate groups under the DEI umbrella. “Black and Brown Club.” “Young Asians with Power.” “White Anti-racist.” “Black Student Alliance.” All were listed during a presentation on the district’s DEI efforts. These aren’t groups based on common interests, but rather on racialized and politicized “shared identities.” . . . Despite the national move against equity as reported by the WSJ and most recently in Crains, New Trier shows no sign of slowing down its affinity group efforts – the school district has a new LinkedIn job posting for a Black and Brown Club Affinity Group Sponsor. And note the language listed under Qualifications: “Preference will be given to applicants who identify as Black, African-American, Hispanic and/or Latinx and/or have personal experience with or knowledge of the needs of this population.” Interesting, considering the recent ruling against affirmative action. . .A recent New Trier 9th-grade assignment shows how DEI can negatively impact students. A student I know was asked to measure his level of “privilege” through a series of questions in his freshman English class. The activity is not a problem in and of itself, but look at how “privilege” is framed by the material below and you can understand the student’s concern. “Privilege operates on personal, intrapersonal, cultural and institutional levels and gives advantages…to members of dominant groups to the expense of members of target groups…invisible to people who have it…privileges are unearned and they are granted to people whether they want those privileges or not.” In sum: If you are part of a dominant group you are privileged, you don’t need to work hard for success… things are handed to you. Whereas, if you aren’t privileged in these ways, even hard work won’t get you there. Examples of automatic privilege, as listed below, include “white” “male” “heterosexual” “middle class” “English-speaking” and more. It’s no wonder such language made a 9th-grader who can circle most of those areas “feel bad about himself.” I was told: “He was totally caught in the middle – very uncomfortable answering the questions and thinking the goal was to make him feel guilty, but at the same time he didn’t want to rock the boat and anger the teacher.” That doesn’t sound like a classroom that’s conducive to open discussions. DEI becomes particularly divisive when privilege is equated with oppression or racism, as is often done, and as you can see in some of the examples above. You’re either the oppressor or the oppressed, a bigot or a victim. Few claims could be more divisive or untrue. It should be obvious that many who might be called privileged are not racists or oppressors, and declaring them as such invites disharmony if not outright hatred between groups.)

He suggests that the activity entails assigning or identifying individuals with varying levels of privilege or victimhood based on chance. “Spin the wheel and select a victim status,” Proft posted on X. “The Wheel of Power/Privilege instructional featured at Loyola Academy HS in Wilmette, IL, a wealthy, honky enclave where the schools, even the ostensibly Catholic ones, are self-flagellation spas to release guilt toxins.” Profit’s critique underscores what he deems to be an excessive focus on guilt and victimhood within wealthy and predominantly white communities, particularly in educational institutions. Loyola Academy is comprised of over 2,000 students. The school has been in operation since its founding by the Jesuits in 1909. The school costs $19,950 per year to attend. The wheel is an example of intersectionality, a phrase coined by academics seeking to bundle together disparate elements of society. According to the National Review, the term comes from academic Kimberlé Crenshaw’s exploration of how various identity markers intersect to shape individual experiences. Critics note that the tendency in intersectionality advocates to monopolize the experiences of marginalized groups and highlights the danger of codifying identity hierarchies. Ultimately, critics argue for a nuanced understanding of social dynamics beyond rigid theoretical frameworks, emphasizing the importance of individual perception and critical engagement with reality. In her TED Talk, Crenshaw emphasized that if someone stands at the intersection of multiple forms of exclusion, they are likely to face the impact of both. Crenshaw calls for acknowledging this reality and advocating for victims of prejudice. “Many years ago, I began to use the term “intersectionality” to deal with the fact that many of our social justice problems like racism and sexism are often overlapping, creating multiple levels of social injustice,” Crenshaw said.)

They provided me with room and board while I a) did yard work 1962-1964, b) delivered newspapers 1962-1966, c) washed dishes 1964-1966, d) cleaned golf shoes, chipped slag, and pumped gasoline in 1966, and e) delivered mail 1966-1969. That enabled me to a) buy a 1958 Chevrolet Bel Air in 1964, a new 1966 Pontiac Tempest Sprint in 1966, a new 1968 Oldsmobile 442 in 1967, and a new 1969 Dodge Charger SE in 1968. That enabled me to pay for my college expenses at UIC 1966-1968 and at NIU 1969-1970. That enabled me to graduate debt-free from NIU with a bachelor’s degree in management and owning that Charger in 1970. Neither of my parents attended college. My father was only the first of my ancestors to earn a high school diploma. He fought brittle type 1 diabetes from childhood. He worked in the office of a nasty chemical plant on the east side of Chicago Heights and almost always worked second jobs to pay the family’s bills. My mother never attended high school. Further, ever since I got married in 1978, my critics/opponents have hinted/implied/argued/shouted that I have unfairly benefitted from that marriage. They hint/imply/argue/shout that if I had not gotten married, I would never had been able to pass the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979, earn a master’s degree in accounting in 1980, pass the Certified Internal Auditor examination on my first attempt in 1981, become a licensed COPA in 1981, etc. In my defense, I had earned an MBA in 1976 and I had almost completed the requirements for a master’s degree in accounting in 1978.)
