— What were you doing 40 years ago today? My wife Karen and I were getting married at her Catholic church in Chicago. We both worked in downtown Chicago. I had worked for IRS since 1971 and she had worked for the U.S. League of Savings Institutions since 1970. In today’s dollars, IRS paid me $89,178/year. We used her savings for the down payment to buy 1017 East Harrison in Wheaton and we used the profit from the sale of my one bedroom condo in the Outer Drive East building to buy a new 1978 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Royale and a new 1978 Chevy Chevette. I soon sold my 1962 Chevy BelAir and I continued to store my 1972 Corvette in my mother’s garage in Crete. I took graduate accounting courses at DePaul’s downtown building and Karen soon started taking courses there toward a bachelor’s degree in finance. Because of Money Magazine’s February 1978 4-page article on us, IRS had disallowed all the graduate business courses that I had taken at Loyola and all the graduate accounting courses that I had taken at DePaul. Eventually, I won a split decision in Tax Court. The judge imposed a new rule that you cannot deduct accounting courses until you are qualified to take the CPA examination. I continued to rent out a town home in University Park that I had bought new in 1972.  I sold it in 1984 when we had 915 Cove Court built in Wheaton. – Dave Diersen

And he got more than 20,000 votes. Ugh. Ideally, Arthur Jones would have received no votes because he deserves no support. But even one vote – his own – would have been enough to win Tuesday’s primary because he ran unopposed. Instead he got 20,458. The Cook County Clerk’s Office reports that 70 percent of suburban voters in the district pulling a Republican ballot checked his name. We blame a lack of situational awareness. Republicans didn’t bother to recruit a legitimate candidate because the district is gerrymandered to elect a Democrat. So Jones waltzed in and now is set to run on their ticket in November against incumbent Rep. Dan Lipinski. This embarrassment is on Republicans. Let both parties stay awake during future filing periods to prevent unsavory characters from hijacking their good names. Most voters didn’t intend to support Jones, we’re certain. They voted the party line and automatically filled in the box next to his name. Why research an unopposed candidate? We wish they had paid more attention to news reports. (FROM THE ARTICLE: College of DuPage student Benjamin Hamgeri recently took part in the prestigious Mary T. Washington Wylie Accounting Internship Preparation Program. Sponsored by the Illinois CPA Society, the program is for African American and other underrepresented students who have at least a 3.0 GPA and a sophomore or junior standing. Hamgeri was one of only 25 college or university students in Illinois selected to participate, with each receiving a $500 scholarship. The Bensenville resident heard about the program from COD Accounting Professor Maureen McBeth. “I owe it all to her,” he said. “She is such a great teacher and approached me about this opportunity, which I had not heard about before.” During the three-day training program, held at the beginning of the year, participants networked with peers and listened to presentations from professionals at the major accounting firms in Chicago. Hamgeri also toured Grant Thornton, one of the city’s top firms, and gained valuable interviewing tips. “Everyone was enthusiastic to be there, and it was great to speak with people working in the field,” he said. “On the last day, we had a chance to interview with different accounting firms for 20 minutes each. It was good to find out what they look for when hiring, and the experience encouraged me to get out of my comfort zone.” Although his brother is an accountant and his mother studied accounting, Hamgeri initially wanted to do something else for a career. “I was interested in business but not sure what specific area to study,” he said. “I was at Illinois State University but I really didn’t want to go to college, so I returned home to refocus. Although my sister came to College of DuPage, I didn’t want to because I didn’t want to attend what I thought was just a bigger version of my high school. I found that COD is so much more.” Taking classes with McBeth helped Hamgeri see accounting the right career for him. “I never had a teacher take so much interest in me, going the extra mile to help me develop as a student,” he said. “She made me realize how prestigious accounting was. The stigma is that you sit at your desk all day. Instead, accounting is a form of communication — it’s the language of business. It tells you whether or not your business will succeed, and it’s always changing.” Hamgeri plans to become a CPA but is still determining what area of accounting to pursue. Because of College of DuPage, he is optimistic about school and his future. “COD helped relieved the pressure of attending a large university,” he said. “It’s much easier to focus here and everyone’s door is open, from meeting with professors to finding a tutor. I’ve learned to ask questions and not be afraid of what other people say. “At COD, you’re getting a good education. And if you are enthusiastic and hungry to learn more, the world is yours.”)

The legislation, enacted in 1984, is a critical tool to ensure our public bodies are transparent and that, to quote the act, “all persons are entitled to full and complete information regarding the affairs of government and the official acts and policies of those who represent them as public officials and public employees.” That sounds good, but the General Assembly has elected to exclude one noteworthy group from disclosure rules — lawmakers themselves. The argument is legislators deal with sensitive constituent issues and share draft legislation that are negotiating documents. (Congress has a similar exemption and cites similar logic.) That means a citizen can get, say, five years’ worth of internal emails of the local township cemetery board, the calendar of Gov. Bruce Rauner and any other documents related public business, but can’t see any paperwork for our elected citizen legislature. For Madigan, that also means all correspondence is exempt for his two high-profile positions — as speaker, which he’s held since 1983, and as head of the state Democratic party, his position since 1998. Such a blank exemption bars the public from getting a full picture about what Madigan knew and when he knew it about the allegations. In one, a political consultant is accused of sending sexual text messages to a female staffer. Another consultant was removed because of inappropriate behavior involving a candidate in 2016, Madigan’s office said.)
