(FROM THE LETTER: Gov. JB Pritzker is once again talking about gerrymandering — just not in Illinois. This week, he welcomed Texas Democratic legislators to Oakwood, Illinois, to denounce Republican redistricting efforts in that state. But while Pritzker lectures red states about fairness, he continues to ignore the glaring problems in his own backyard. Don’t forget that in 2021, Pritzker signed one of the most blatantly and aggressively gerrymandered congressional maps in the country, drawn and passed by his own party. The map created districts with lines that make my grandchildren’s scribblings look like Pablo Picasso’s. It’s a stark contrast from when Pritzker was on the campaign trail. He promised to veto any map that was “in any way drafted or created by legislators, political party leaders and/or their staffs or allies.” Pritzker campaigned with a message of hope and fairness and moving past Democrats’ history of corruption. Then, at his first opportunity, Pritzker broke that promise without hesitation. “Fairness” wasn’t on Illinois Democrats’ minds. Now, as he positions himself to run for president, Pritzker is outraged. While standing on his giant soapbox and projecting his moral authority, he floated the idea of redrawing even more favorable maps in Illinois. That’s not democratic leadership; it’s partisan gamesmanship. That map gave Democrats a clear advantage in 14 of Illinois’ 17 congressional districts and earned an “F” for fairness from the nonpartisan Princeton Gerrymandering Project. The maps weren’t an accident. They deliberately cut out two Republican-leaning seats and helped lock in Democratic control. Let that sink in: The same man who signed, supported and pushed one of the worst partisan gerrymanders in the nation is now upset that other states are following his lead. Instead of looking in the mirror or pushing for national changes, Pritzker responds by threatening additional partisan moves that will continue to divide our state. Illinois families deserve better. They deserve fair representation, not districts drawn in backrooms to silence opposition and insulate power. When maps are rigged to favor one party, voters lose faith in our elections and our country’s founding principles. The truth is, with Democratic supermajorities in Springfield, there’s no one who can force Illinois Democrats to do the right thing and clean up partisan games — they need to do it themselves. If Pritzker truly wants to lead on voting rights and gerrymandering, he should start by honoring the promise he made to Illinois voters: to support an independent redistricting commission and end partisan gerrymandering in our state. The phrase “fix your own house before criticizing your neighbor” has never been more apt. And until Pritzker refuses to rein in Illinois’ partisan splintering map, his lectures about Texas ring hollow. Gerrymandering matters, and both Republicans and Democrats should do their part in making sure that there is a system that doesn’t play political games. But our country won’t learn how to draw better maps from the man who inked Illinois’ most gerrymandered script. Until then, his speeches about fairness will continue to ring hollow. You can’t fight for democracy in Texas while undermining it in Illinois. The phrase “fix your own house before criticizing your neighbor” has never been more apt. (FROM THE ARTICLE: A decades-old court order that blocked the federal government from using tests to measure job applicants’ skills was terminated by a D.C. judge on Friday, setting the stage for an overhaul of the federal workforce that could be one of President Donald Trump’s most lasting achievements. In 1981, Angel Luevano sued the federal government over the Professional and Administrative Career Examination, a test that helped identify the best and brightest out of the tens of thousands who apply for government jobs each year. Luevano argued that the test kept too many blacks and Hispanics out of government, and, in the waning days of President Jimmy Carter’s administration, OPM agreed to pause the test for five years. Forty-four years later, the “Luevano Consent Decree” was somehow still intact. In January, the Trump administration filed a brief challenging the agreement — a feat which required reopening a decades-closed court case in which the original judge had died. The administration argued that it was doubtful the decree was ever appropriate, and that, with Supreme Court case law outlawing affirmative action, it was certainly not now. Angel Luevano is still alive, and agreed to terminate the consent decree, court papers show. Luevano was represented by lawyers from Hispanic and black civil rights groups, two of whom did not return a request for comment. For almost half a century, the federal government has operated like a college that didn’t look at SAT scores when admitting students. Rescinding the Luevano Consent Decree could take the government from safety-school status to Ivy League. “We’re making civil service great again,” Office of Personnel Management Director Scott Kupor told The Daily Wire Friday. The move opens the door to technocratic hiring assessments that allow the government to hire applicants who objectively demonstrate the most aptitude. Kupor told The Daily Wire in an interview that the move means Americans may start getting better service at government agencies, with government being more helpful and responsive. “The lasting opportunity here is: can we change the culture of the workforce in the federal government? Can we make it a high-performance culture? That will definitely be the president’s legacy, if we can make that successful,” he said. After the demise of the Professional and Administrative Career Examination and similar tests, the government began relying on “self-assessments” to sift through job applicants, as it was the only measure that saw a sufficient number of minorities enter government. Applicants simply declared how good they were at a task, with no attempt to verify it or compare them to other applicants. That led to a hiring process that rewarded boasting and fabrications as much as merit. Kupor said the de facto prohibition on government checking people’s competency before hiring them — at which point they become difficult to remove — had become particularly crippling in the modern age, with people using artificial intelligence or simply copy-and-paste to take a job advertisement’s requirements and send an application asserting that they had all those skills. The inability to use objective measures to sort the most qualified applicants from a large pool — as virtually all other large employers do — has profoundly impacted the caliber of government employees. The Luevano Consent Decree was perhaps one of the largest applications ever of the philosophy known as “disparate impact,” which holds that anything that produces racially unbalanced outcomes must inherently be racist. But the fallout went beyond just minorities, leaving little way to differentiate a brilliant white job applicant from an incompetent white applicant. OPM General Counsel Andrew Kloster told The Daily Wire in an interview that the government did not make any concessions to reach the agreement. “It was a very easy process,” he said. “They just flat out agreed. (FROM THE ARTICLE: A legal case is moving forward against the Illinois State Board of Elections over allegations that the state failed to maintain voter registration lists. Former state Rep. Jeanne Ives, R-Wheaton, said the National Voter Registration Act requires the state to perform list maintenance and remove ineligible voters. U.S. District Court Judge Sara L. Ellis dismissed two plaintiffs from the case last week, but Ives’ group, Breakthrough Ideas, was not dismissed and retains standing as a plaintiff along with Illinois Family Action. The groups filed suit with Judicial Watch attorneys in March of 2024. Ives said it’s obvious that voter lists are not well-maintained in Illinois. “This creates extra costs people should not have to incur and it wastes time as well, not to mention it invites fraud when you do not have cleaned-up voter lists,” Ives told The Center Square. Ives said the dead have voted in Illinois. “I’ve pointed out a couple of dead people that I know casted votes, and there was no adequate explanation for why that occurred. Because they were not cleaned off the voter roll, it invited fraud one way or another. In the state of Illinois, this becomes even more problematic when you have permanent vote by mail,” Ives explained. “So you will have ballots being sent to people that are possibly moved or dead, which makes list maintenance even more important in the state of Illinois.” Ives said 23 Illinois counties with a combined registration list of 980,089 voters reported removing only 100 registrations over a two-year period. “That is an absurdly small number. There is no possible way those counties were conducting a general program that makes an effort to clean up the voter rolls, because only a hundred people died in 23 counties? Nobody believes that, so we know that they’re not doing what they should do,” Ives said. On July 8, the U.S. Department of Justice filed a 15-page statement of interest in the case. “When Illinois voters cast their ballots, they should be confident that their vote is given its due weight, undiluted by ineligible voters,” the statement began. “It is critical to remove ineligible voters from the registration rolls so that elections are conducted fairly, accurately, and without fraud,” said Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division in a press release regarding the statement of interest. “Under the NVRA, states have the responsibility to conduct a robust program of list maintenance. The Department of Justice will vigorously enforce those requirements to ensure compliance.” Ives said the case could have ramifications across the country. She said it is possible that the DOJ will file its own lawsuit. As for what’s next, Ives said parties were waiting for a written ruling and it’s possible there could be a hearing later this month. Ives said she suspects there could be a settlement in the case.)

She will seek her party’s nomination in the March 17 primary election. If she wins the primary, she will be on the Nov. 5, 2026 general election ballot. The 12 employees were offered promotions, back pay and associated benefits as if they had been promoted as of Jan. 8, 2006, several sources confirmed Thursday. The case goes back to June 2005, when GAO issued a plan for splitting one of its pay bands — Band II — into Band IIA and Band IIB. Employees placed in Band IIA were not granted pay increases, while employees placed in Band IIB got raises. Several GAO employees and other sources, who spoke under condition of anonymity, questioned why the watchdog agency – which has insisted the pay determinations were justified – decided to settle with the 12 employees.
