They knew that we owned a 1962 Chevy Impala SS collector car, a 1968 Dodge Charger R/T collector car, and a 1972 Corvette collector car.  They knew how much we had in regular savings and how much we had saved for our retirement.  When you work for the federal government, your superiors know everything about you.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Woodrow Wilson imposed and incited extraordinary repressions: “There are citizens of the United States … born under other flags … who have poured the poison of disloyalty into the very arteries of our national life. … Such creatures of passion, disloyalty and anarchy must be crushed out. … They are infinitely malignant, and the hand of our power should close over them.” His Committee on Public Information churned out domestic propaganda instructing the public how to detect pro-German sympathies. A 22-year-old Justice Department official named J. Edgar Hoover administered a program that photographed, fingerprinted and interrogated 500,000 suspects. Local newspapers published the names of people who were not buying war bonds or otherwise supporting the war. People were fired or ostracized for insufficient enthusiasm. The Espionage Act of 1917 made it a crime to “collect, record, publish or communicate” information useful to the enemy. In Illinois, Robert Prager, a German-American coal miner suspected of spying, was stripped, marched through the streets and hanged. The Washington Post deplored such “excesses” but applauded the “healthful and wholesome awakening in the interior part of the country.” Josef Hofer and his two brothers were South Dakota Hutterites whose faith forbade any involvement in war, including wearing a military uniform. They were arrested in March 1918, and a week after the armistice they were sent to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Arriving at the military prison around midnight, they stood naked for hours in a 17-degree November night. Then they were suspended naked from the bars of their cells, their feet barely touching the ground, refusing to wear the uniforms left in their cells. Fed only bread and water, after two weeks David Hofer was allowed to telegraph Josef’s wife, telling her that her husband was dying. He died the morning after she arrived. Prison guards mocked his corpse by dressing it in a uniform. The U.S. military was the world’s 17th largest in April 1917, smaller (less than 250,000) than Romania’s, and smaller than Britain’s casualties in one battle. America’s military became a melting pot for a nation in which one-third of the population had been born abroad or whose parents had been. Forty-three languages were spoken in one Army division raised in New York. One group was ineligible for melting: Printed at the bottom of draft registration cards were these words: “If person is of African descent, tear off this corner.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Google will expand the use of “fact check” tags in its search results — the tech industry’s latest effort to combat false and misleading news stories. People who search for a topic in Google’s main search engine or the Google News section will see a conclusion such as “mostly true” or “false” next to stories that have been fact checked. Google has been working with more than 100 news organizations and fact-checking groups , including The Associated Press, the BBC and NPR. Their conclusions will appear in search results as long as they meet certain formatting criteria for automation. Google said only a few of those organizations, including PolitiFact and Snopes.com, have already met those requirements; The Washington Post also says it complies. Google said it expects the ranks of compliant organizations to grow following Friday’s announcement. Not all news stories will be fact checked. Multiple organizations may reach different conclusions; Google will show those separately. Still unanswered is whether these fact-check analyses will sway people who are already prone to believe false reports because they confirm preconceived notions. Glenn Kessler, who writes “The Fact Checker” column at The Washington Post, said in an email that Google’s efforts should at least “make it easier for people around the world to obtain information that counters the spin by politicians and political advocacy groups, as well as purveyors of ‘fake news.'” He added that “over time, I expect that people increasingly will want to read a fact-check on a controversial issue or statement, even if the report conflicts with their political leanings.” Google started offering fact check tags in the U.S. and the U.K. in October and expanded the program to a handful of other countries in the subsequent months. Now the program is open to the rest of the world and to all languages. False news and misinformation, often masquerading as trustworthy news that spreads on social media, has gained attention since the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Google’s announcement comes a day after Facebook launched a resource to help users spot false news and misleading information that spreads on its service. The resource is basically a notification that pops up for a few days. Clicking on it takes people to tips and other information on how to spot false news and what to do about it.)

Since September 2015 the United States has admitted more than 117,000 refugees, including more than 1,000 since Trump became president on January 20. But the inflow took a hit under a Trump executive order signed in January that banned citizens from seven Muslim-majority nations from entering the U.S. for 90 days. Last year according to state department data Muslims accounted for nearly half of all refugee admissions into the country. The Trump executive order will reduce the number of refugees annually admitted into the U.S. from 110,000 to a mere 50,000 people-the lowest ceiling in 35 years. It is currently estimated that more than 23 million refugees-half of them children-are fleeing war and repression around the world. Officials at the Trump Tower in Chicago have not responded to messages left by the I-Team. Eli’s Cheesecake officials said they currently employ 10 refugees and many other new immigrants. (FROM THE ARTICLE: The other day, one of my sources suggested I get a job in corporate public relations. That’s where the money is, he told me. While he may be right, he’s overlooking the reason journalists do what they do. Journalists believe in finding truth, or reporting it as close as objectively possible. They also believe in holding government accountable to its citizens, among many other responsibilities. There is a gratification in being able to inform readers of something they didn’t know or news they can use in their everyday lives. Landing a position in corporate or government PR is a lot more lucrative than working at a newspaper or a TV station. It’s been that way for a long time. It’s a good job, and many of those folks are helpful in communicating to news outlets. But PR and marketing positions have drawbacks. One of them in particular is that many PR folks must toe the company line. It’s hard to get to objective truth when there’s a built-in bias. What news outlets can’t do is let government and other institutions become less accountable to the public. The official line can’t become the only line. The news release from a government agency or corporate entity shouldn’t be treated as gospel. Many newspapers are hungry for stories to fill their pages. Enterprising groups, including the conservative Illinois Policy Institute, sense that desperation. A few years ago, the institute formed the neutral-sounding Illinois News Network, which offers stories with a conservative bent to newspapers around the state. The Illinois News Network is nothing to scoff at. Recently, it hired a big player in northern Illinois’ media world as its news director — Dan McCaleb, editorial director of Shaw Media, which runs a bunch of papers in the suburbs. (Full disclosure: I worked for the institute for five months after working for a Shaw Media weekly.) Another conservative group is distributing supposedly local newspapers that favor Gov. Bruce Rauner and other Republicans. Starved Rock Country has its own version, the Illinois Valley Times. I have yet to find one writer in that paper who has burned any shoe leather anywhere near here. Many of its writers hail from the Philippines. Covering La Salle County from across the world is no substitute for reporters on the ground holding the powers that be accountable. I’ll do what I can to avoid ending up as a PR flack for corporate types. The work of a journalist is too essential.)

Rodney Davis was asked whether members of Congress should get their health care coverage under the Affordable Care Act. We do, he said. And he pays more for it than he did under a previous program, with a higher deductible and a higher out-of-pocket maximum cost. “I’m part of the only group that has to, by law, has to get their benefits through the Affordable Care Act for health care,” Davis said. “I actually follow more stringent requirements than the Obama White House did. They were able to join millions of federal employees through the federal employee health benefit program.” Davis didn’t say it, but the reason for the disparity is that’s the way Congress wrote the law. “For a long period of time,” said Sen.
