(AI told me they have the cheapest housing prices.) The Big Apple is my home. I spent much of my childhood here and have lived in Manhattan for more than two decades. Most of my immediate and extended family are here. Every Sunday we gather in my aunt’s downtown apartment for family dinner. I don’t fly home for Thanksgiving or Christmas. I take the F train to my cousin’s house in Brooklyn. My family has been here for generations. Heck, my paternal grandmother was even stabbed here in 1961. (She survived, thankfully, and moved to a safer neighborhood in The Bronx. But you get the point: This isn’t a causal relationship.) Many tourists might see the city as merely a backdrop to film social media content or catch a Broadway show. But it’s also a place to maintain roots and raise families. And, yes, struggle to survive. I truly worry that, under Mamdani, our city — which is still emerging from its pandemic stupor — will be pulled back into an abyss of chaos and crime. I fret that businesses which no longer need to be here to remain competitive will leave and take loads of tax dollars — and jobs — with them. I also pray that Albany will spoil Mamdani’s plans for grabbing other people’s money. If all the sensible people flee, we are just handing over the keys to Mamdani — the pretty face of an ugly movement. He is a Trojan horse for the Democratic Socialists of America and their pernicious anti-Western agenda. His very dark victory speech, in which he lectured us on Islamophobia and boasted about big government, was chilling. Data shows loads of young, educated transplants voted for Mamdani — because of his pie-in-the-sky promises to freeze rents and deliver them all the trappings of success for a discounted price. If you believe that, I have a bridge to sell. . .But back to New York City: This place has taken beatings from fiscal mismanagement, rampant crime, disorder, feckless politicians, pandemics and Islamic terrorists. My critics/opponents want ever-increasing more a) preference for those who share their demographics, b) cheap labor, c) socialism and then communism, d) destruction of traditional marriage and family, that is, LGBTQ, e) abortion, f) mass/illegal immigration, g) booze, gambling, pot, and other vices, h) abolition if the Second Amendment, and i) Affirmative Action and more DEI, that is, patronage, political affiliation discrimination, reverse discrimination, age discrimination, religious discrimination, and national origin discrimination.

(FROM THE ARTICLE: When Mike Lindell, the chief executive of MyPillow and the founder of the upstart digital news site LindellTV, recently heard about the chance to secure a Pentagon press credential, he immediately applied for four. The outlet, which strongly supports the Trump administration and is known for promoting election conspiracy theories, already had accredited journalists stationed at the White House and in Congress. The Pentagon would be a perfect capstone, he thought. “We’re going to make them proud,” he said about the administration in an interview. It has been nearly three weeks since dozens of legacy outlets — including The New York Times, The Washington Post and the three major broadcast news networks — Fox News and Newsmax surrendered press passes that gave their journalists access to the Pentagon. They did so after declining to sign on to new rules that, according to many media lawyers, curbed their First Amendment rights to report on the military. Many of those outlets have continued aggressive coverage of the military from outside the Pentagon since then. In their place, a fresh crop of news media has stepped forward to occupy the Pentagon’s tightly circumscribed press areas, ones with a strikingly different philosophy when it comes to traditional journalistic notions about the fourth estate and holding truth to power. The Pentagon said it would not release a list of the outlets in the changing press corps, but The Times was able to identify a dozen of them. They range from widely popular right-wing podcasts to niche publications largely focused on issues like abortion, but are similar in their unwavering support for the Trump administration and the firm belief that ruffling government feathers is decidedly not part of the job description. “We’re there for the big-ticket narrative stuff,” Raheem Kassam, editor in chief of the National Pulse, a part of the new Pentagon press detachment, wrote in a text message. He called his publication “basically an industry mag/site for MAGA world.” Initially, the National Pulse’s eyes and ears in the Pentagon will be Will Upton, who worked in the Treasury Department during the first Trump administration and has been a frequent and vocal critic of traditional journalists, whom he has characterized as partisan actors. Laura Loomer, the influential pro-Trump activist, said in a post on X late on Monday that she would be joining the Pentagon press corps, writing that she looks forward to “breaking more stories that impact our country and our national security.” News of her accreditation was reported earlier by The Washington Post. Other new arrivals include LifeSite News, a Catholic advocacy publication, whose Pentagon reporter is a former aide to Representative Paul Gosar, an Arizona Republican, and has been accused of making antisemitic and misogynistic remarks; RedState, owned by the Christian radio giant Salem Media, whose reporter was the communications director for James O’Keefe, the right-wing hidden camera journalist who founded Project Veritas; and Gateway Pundit, a site that often has spread conspiracy theories, which will have two military correspondents, including one who is perhaps best known for her work pushing for pardons for participants in the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021. David Schulz, director of Yale Law School’s Media Freedom and Information Access Clinic, who serves as legal counsel for the Pentagon Press Association, said that the new rules amounted to an effort to limit what journalists could report and that the new outlets had pro-Trump leanings in common. “These new regulations are really not about national security,” Mr. Schulz said. “They’re about controlling viewpoint and content.” In a statement, Sean Parnell, the chief Defense Department spokesman, said the traditional news outlets had misrepresented the policy. “The so-called ‘journalists’ staged a self-deportation and filmed their theatrics,” he said. “We are proud to see the new wave of highly motivated journalists, who value truth, occupy the Correspondents Corridor.” Mr. Parnell had previously said in a social media post that the newcomers amounted to more than 60 journalists, roughly equivalent to the number of traditional reporters who handed in their badges on Oct. 15. A handful of outlets that had been in the Pentagon press corps previously, including The Epoch Times and One America News Network, agreed to sign the policy and have remained there. Mr. Parnell’s post prompted announcements from outlets that said they would be getting credentials, among them Human Events and the Post Millennial, sister sites that share a single owner and frequent contributions from Jack Posobiec, the well-known podcaster and Navy veteran who has a close relationship with numerous Trump administration officials, including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. “We repealed and replaced the press pool,” Mr. Posobiec said in a recent interview on Real America’s Voice, which itself said on X that it would be getting a Pentagon credential. Libby Emmons, editor in chief of Human Events and the Post Millennial, said she had requested four passes for her staff and signed the new Pentagon press policy. “There should be a place for reporting on what they are doing without always trying to expose the dark underbelly,” Ms. Emmons said. “And that’s part of why I said sure, I’ll sign your thing and come check it out.” Major Washington outposts — Congress, the White House, the State Department and the Pentagon — have long had their own press corps: packs of print reporters, television correspondents and their camera crews, who hover in the hallways and tag along with officials as they travel. President Trump and his appointees have often criticized the journalists who follow them on a daily basis, but until now, the administration has never gone so far as to effectively remake an entire press corps. “I’ve never seen anything like that, and it doesn’t seem to resemble anything from a team that respects an actual independent press corps,” said Eric Schultz, who served as a press aide under President Barack Obama. Ms. Emmons said she had received an unsolicited invitation to apply for credentials after the legacy journalists refused to sign the new rules. “We value what the press does every single day, but unfortunately we have seen a lot of the mainstream media continue to lie,” Kingsley Wilson, Defense Department spokeswoman, said in an interview that same day with Frontlines, a media arm of Turning Point USA. That outlet subsequently announced that it, too, would be joining the new Pentagon media crew. Several of those joining the new press corps live nowhere near the nation’s capital, even though the department’s published policies say credentialed correspondents should be at the Pentagon, just outside Washington, “at least three times a month.” Tim Pool, the beanie-wearing right-wing podcaster, said on X that he did “not intend to maintain a significant presence in the Pentagon” after disclosing that his outlet, Timcast Media, was also getting a credential. Last year, a federal investigation revealed that Mr. Pool was paid to produce videos for a company that was secretly funded by the Russian government. Mr. Pool, who was not charged, has claimed he was unaware of where the payments, which amounted to $100,000 per video, came from. Under the new policy, journalists could get in trouble — and even lose access permanently — for soliciting government employees to “violate the law by providing confidential government information.” Securing confidential information is the bread and butter of accountability reporting and has produced some of the most important journalism of the past century. There are few signs, however, that the reconstituted Pentagon press corps has aspirations to test the limits of those rules. Mr. Pool, on his podcast, said, “We are not an investigative news organization.” He added: “We do not have journalists meeting with sources in parking garages while they kick over a manila folder with secret documents. We don’t do any of that.” Mr. Lindell, for his part, said he would “follow the rules to the T,” echoing the contention by Pentagon officials that leaks — even of nonclassified information — are a threat to national security. “We would never do anything like the mainstream media does to jeopardize our country,” he added.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Illinois has now joined California and Connecticut in barring federal immigration agents from conducting “civil arrests” of illegal aliens in or around state courthouses. The sanctuary law appears largely performative since it also appears unconstitutional. It is difficult to see how a state can bar the exercise of federal jurisdiction, at least after the Civil War. Gov. JB Pritzker has been ratcheting up the rhetoric against ICE and the Trump Administration for months, including analogies to the Nazis and claims that democracy is dying. (FROM THE ARTICLE: In the early hours of Friday morning, Illinois Democrats pushed through one of the most extreme immigration bills in the country – a sweeping measure designed to block federal immigration enforcement and further cement Illinois’ status as a sanctuary state. The bill, House Bill 1312, passed after hours of emotional speeches according to Politico, from Democratic lawmakers, many of whom compared federal immigration agents to kidnappers and slave catchers. The legislation, which Gov. JB Pritzker is expected to sign, designates “safe zones” around schools, hospitals, and courthouses, and allows individuals to sue immigration officers for alleged violations of their “constitutional rights,” including false imprisonment or unlawful detention. “This bill is a statement on behalf of the legislature to say that what ICE is doing is unacceptable,” declared State Sen. Celina Villanueva (D-Chicago), one of the bill’s lead sponsors. Under the new law, federal immigration officers will face punitive damages if they conceal their identities, fail to wear body cameras, or use unmarked or out-of-state vehicles while conducting enforcement operations. It also prohibits civil immigration arrests inside courthouses or within 1,000 feet of them – effectively creating sanctuary zones where federal law cannot be enforced. FROM THE ARTICLE: The Crete Police Department said multiple individuals from a construction crew near Berkshire and Stafford were detained Monday by federal immigration enforcement officers. RLM Underground construction manager Shawn Davis said Wednesday about four to five people were detained between 10:30 and 11 a.m. from his construction crew, which he subcontracted from another company. The crew was drilling conduit to install surf internet, but construction was halted after the workers were arrested. Davis said his company, along with another company on the job, Evolve Telecom, brought in additional workers from their company’s Midwest branches to continue the work on Tuesday. Some workers lived locally and others had to travel into town, he said. Crete police said in a statement information was received and verified from workers that several members of the crew were taken into custody by ICE agents. Officials also said the Police Department was contacted by several residents Monday regarding ICE sightings and activity within the village. Police said officers contacted witnesses and gathered information related to these reports and found several of the reported sightings were either untrue or couldn’t be substantiated. Crete officials also said the Police Department was never contacted by ICE and did not have notice of or assist in this operation. They noted Illinois law enforcement agencies are prohibited by the Illinois Trust Act from conducting or assisting in immigration only enforcement. Crete police also said Illinois law enforcement can only assist ICE if a valid warrant exists, probable cause of a criminal act (other than immigration status) was committed or protection of ICE agents who are victims of crime. “The Crete Police Department understands the sensitive nature of these matters and wants to assure the public that we are committed to being transparent in our role and the information we have regarding these encounters,” reads the statement. “The Crete Police Department is dedicated to communicating and sharing information with all residents, organizations, and businesses within our community.”

(FROM THE ARTICLE: President Donald Trump has used the federal shutdown to seize control of spending from Congress and mold much of the government to his liking. Now the lone agency with the power to push back on those moves might be running out of time to try it. The agency’s leader, Comptroller General Gene Dodaro, has about two months left in his term, and Trump will nominate his replacement, potentially scuttling some of the Government Accountability Office’s most forceful attempts at oversight — including by taking the White House to court if necessary. The agency retained a law firm to evaluate whether the White House was breaking federal laws governing spending and to prepare for a potential legal challenge — though officials have not decided whether to pursue a case, according to two people familiar with Dodaro’s thinking, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to share details from private conversations. “They are looking at everything,” said one of the people. Now the White House is poised to defang the agency in the middle of the shutdown and the fight over constitutional powers, simply by appointing an ally as its new boss. When Dodaro’s term ends Dec. 29, congressional leaders will suggest to Trump a list of successors, though Trump can disregard the recommendation and send up his own choice for Senate confirmation. The Trump administration has claimed much of GAO’s work — and the agency itself — is illegitimate. Russell Vought, the White House budget director and architect of much of the administration’s shutdown strategy, said it “shouldn’t exist.” Congressional Republicans tried to slash GAO’s funding in this round of government spending negotiations and attempted to block the agency from suing the Trump administration on behalf of Congress. But the agency has taken on more prominence in recent months. A federal appeals court in August held that only GAO had the standing to sue over violations of spending laws, cutting out the groups that claimed harm from Trump’s decisions. Other federal courts that have considered related cases have not made similar determinations. “If Trump nominates the next comptroller general — I don’t want to make a political thing out of it, but his track record about caring about oversight and independent evaluations is not terribly strong,” said Henry Wray, a former associate general counsel and ethics counselor for GAO. “GAO is really the only truly fully independent source of executive branch oversight in government.” The government shutdown, well into its fourth week, presented a novel window for Trump to remake much of the federal government. He called the closure of many federal agencies an “opportunity” delivered to him on a “silver platter” to rid the government of “Democrat agencies” and lay off thousands of federal employees, though courts have blocked some of the dismissals he has attempted. And while congressional Democrats’ main demand in the shutdown talks is to preserve pandemic-era Affordable Care Act subsidies, they’ve also insisted that Trump drop attempts to impound funds, or that GOP lawmakers agree to strengthen provisions written into bill text that mandate the White House spend what Congress tells it to. Shutdowns are unique tests for the balance of power between the branches. With no spending laws in effect, the president has broader latitude than usual to redirect funds that preserve vital government functions, though such power is not unlimited. Long before the shutdown, the Trump administration had attempted to assert even greater authority. GAO determined this year that Trump and Vought blocked funds from going to programs that Congress had required by law, a concept called impoundment that is banned under a 1974 law. The agency investigated 13 spending maneuvers by the administration and found six violations. “Once enacted,” GAO wrote in its investigation of an impoundment of Department of Homeland Security funds in September, “an appropriation is a law like any other, and the President must implement it by ensuring that appropriated funds are obligated and expended prudently during their period of availability unless and until Congress enacts another law providing otherwise.” Trump and key advisers like Vought say that the funding levels Congress sets are a ceiling, not a floor, and that the president can choose not to spend as much as lawmakers have ordered. Republican leaders in Congress have generally gone along with that interpretation. But Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine), chairwoman of the powerful Appropriations Committee, last month encouraged GAO to sue the White House. No decisions have been made. “GAO’s role in the [Impoundment Control Act] is to support Congress by providing information on the status of funds, issuing legal decisions and considering options for release of funds Congress has appropriated,” GAO General Counsel Edda Emmanuelli Perez said in a statement. “In considering whether to file a lawsuit, GAO would communicate with Congress on the available options and provide a 25 day formal notification as required by the ICA.” The tussle between the executive and legislative branches does not inherently require GAO’s intervention — if Congress stands up more aggressively for its powers, experts say. Lawmakers could publicly push back on the administration to pressure it to stop impoundments or to strictly adhere to Congress’s intent when making spending decisions during the shutdown. “If on a bipartisan basis, Congress would come together, at least a majority of members of Congress come together, and say, ‘The power of the purse is ours and here’s what that means,’ I think that would go a long way toward preventing the White House from continuing to give Congress a runaround when it comes to appropriated funding,” said Faith Williams, a program director at the Project on Government Oversight, a nonpartisan open-government organization.)
