— All politics is local. It should be extremely important to you who represents you in your municipality’s government. Residents of Wheaton’s West District have been represented in Wheaton’s government by Todd Scalzo for the last 10 years, but Scalzo has resigned.

It would be great if the Milton Township Republican Central Committee (MTRCC) would host a candidate forum for the seven Republican candidates who are seeking appointment to fill Wheaton’s West District City Council vacancy.

Those seven candidates are Edward Ahern, Jeffery Antonelli, Angela Blatner, Dave Diersen, Nancy Harding, Mark Kmiecik, and Robert McNeily.

Hopefully, all of the aforesaid seven candidates will a) attend MTRCC’s 7:00 PM Wednesday August 14, 2019 meeting at the Holiday Inn in Carol Stream, b) announce their candidacies, c) and seek the support of the eighteen Republican Precinct Committeemen who represent Wheaton’s West District.

Those eighteen Precinct Committeemen are Joseph Caruso, Dave Diersen, Thomas Elsner, Arthur Grant, Ralph Hinkle, Marty Keller, John Kocinski, Robert Krzyzewski, Michael Hinsdale, Jae Kwon, Robert Larsen, Connor McCarthy, Robert McNeily, Ronald Menna, Elizabeth Tatro, James Ryan, Mark Thomas, and Herbert Wehling.

Hopefully, MTRCC will gather relevant information about the aforesaid seven candidates and provide that information to the aforesaid eighteen Precinct Committeemen.

The goal of the candidate forum and providing information on the candidates is to help the aforesaid eighteen Precinct Committeemen recommend to Wheaton’s City Council the best possible candidate to be appointed to fill the Wheaton West District City Council vacancy.

Many Republican candidates, elected officials, and party leaders routinely attend MTRCC meetings. I hope that the following will attend MTRCC’s August 14 meeting and a candidate forum if one is held: a) 6th Congressional District candidates Jeanne Ives and Evelyn Sanguinetti; b) DuPage County Recorder candidates Ron Almiron and Babette Holder; c) Wheaton’s mayor and City Council members; d) Illinois officials including Amy Grant; e) DuPage County officials including Robert Berlin, Fred Bucholz, Daniel Cronin, Pete DiCianni, Grant Eckhoff, Timothy Elliott, Robert Grogan, Gwen Henry, Richard Jorgensen, Christopher Kachiroubas, Robert Larsen, Paula McGowen, James Mendrick, Al Murphy, Sean Noonan, Jeffrey Redick, Darlene Ruscitti, Timothy Whelan, and Jim Zay; f) Milton Township officials including Sal Falbo, Chris Heidorn, Gail Hinkle, Marty Keller, Chris LeVan, Gary Muehlfelt, David Molitor, John Monino, and Yada Nathwani; g) Wheaton Park District officials including Michael Benard; h) School District 200 officials; and i) College of DuPage officials including Annette Corrigan, Christine Fenne, Heidi Holan, and Frank Napolitano.

It will be extremely interesting to see which of the seven candidates are endorsed by which of the aforesaid candidates, elected officials, and party leaders, and especially which candidates Ives and Sanguinetti might endorse because they have served on Wheaton’s City Council. – Dave Diersen

Residents should have the right to know not only the applicants’ names, but a) how long they have lived in the city and in the district, b) why they want to be appointed to fill the vacancy, c) what they believe the most important issues are that the city needs to address, d) what their opinion is on how those issues could be addressed, e) what their work experience is, f) what their education is, g) what professional certifications and licenses are, and h) what experience do they have carrying out typical city council functions: Review and approve the annual budget; Establish long- and short-term objectives and priorities; Oversee performance of the local public employees; Oversee effectiveness of programs; Establish tax rates; Enter into legal contracts; Borrow funds; Pass ordinances and resolutions; Modify the city’s charter; Regulate land use through zoning laws; Regulate business activity through licensing and regulations; Regulate public health and safety; Exercise the power of eminent domain; Communicate policies and programs to residents; Respond to constituent needs and complaints; and Represent the community to other levels of government. Sadly, Wheaton’s policy is to not disclose the names of the applicants or information about them, but instead, just the number of applications received. Please see the articles at the end of this email. So far, Wheaton has received 30 requests for applications, 4 complete applications, and 1 incomplete application. So far, to my knowledge, none of the applicants has publicly announced that they have filed. Because of that, I will be filing. In my opinion, not only Wheaton’s West District residents, but all of Wheaton’s residents should know who the applicants are before the filing deadline. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Although the 2020 election is still 15 months away, the campaign for Congressman Rodney Davis is already dispatching volunteers to surreptitiously try and undermine a key messaging strategy of his rival Betsy Dirksen Londrigan — that she can’t be bought and paid for. On Wednesday, July 17th, Dirksen Londrigan held a joint press conference call with a campaign finance reform group called End Citizens United. The campaign sent invitations to local media and asked them to RSVP. WCIA has learned an unpaid volunteer working on behalf of the Davis campaign crashed the call, lied about his name to pose as reporter for a college newspaper, and ambushed Dirksen Londrigan with pointed arguments, including jabs at her husband’s career. On the call, Dirksen Londrigan said, “Congressman Davis’ votes clearly show he is voting for the corporate PACs and special interests who fund his campaign.” She vowed not to accept any direct campaign contributions from corporate PACs, a political strategy Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders deployed successfully in 2016 to align himself with the growing number of Americans dissatisfied with the Washington establishment and who wanted an outsider to showcase they are not beholden to big business. Davis has pushed back against Dirksen Londrigan’s characterizations, saying on Monday that his campaign contributions have “no more clout over me than it has clout over her for taking money from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, who takes funding from the same sources.” Davis’s defense sounded nearly identical to lines of questioning from a man who joined Dirksen Londrigan’s press call five days earlier. Toward the end of the conference call, a man introduced himself as Jim Sherman from The Alestle, the student newspaper at Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville. . .However, the caller who went after Dirksen Londrigan and her husband in the press call was not who he claimed he was. Miranda Lintzenich, the editor of the student newspaper, told WCIA, “Our student paper is not something through class. It’s an actual employment job. As far as I can remember, we have not had anyone by the name of Jim Sherman work here.” According to SIUE’s public records, there is no one attending class on campus with the name Jim Sherman. An employee at the admissions office told WCIA, “We do not have anyone by the name of Jim Sherman associated with SIUE.” According to a call log provided to WCIA, the phone number used to dial into the conference call matched the cell phone number for Nick Klitzing, the former Executive Director of the Illinois Republican Party who most recently worked as the deputy campaign manager for former Governor Bruce Rauner. Reached by phone, Klitzing confessed to committing the hoax and said, “I was willing to help. I’m just a volunteer.” Veteran political reporter and press relations man Mike Lawrence called the episode “unfortunate” and “off limits for any campaign.” Lawrence served as bureau chief for the now-defunct Lee Enterprises and later in the same capacity for the Chicago Sun-Times for more than 20 years before signing on as former Governor Jim Edgar’s press secretary in 1990. Later, Lawrence served as the director of SIU’s Paul Simon Public Policy Institute. “I don’t think it’s appropriate,” Lawrence said. “It’s an indication of the continued degradation of campaigning. In some respects, it’s an extension of the ‘anything goes’ mentality.” Lawrence recalled the old days where campaigns would engage in “dirty tricks” or send trackers to hound rival candidates at public events, but said, “I think this goes a step further.” “It’s not appropriate for someone to misrepresent himself as a reporter,” Lawrence said. Confronted with the established facts of the story and Klitzing’s confession, Davis’ campaign manager Matt Butcher initially tried to deny having any knowledge about the phone call. WCIA gave Butcher another 24 hours to explain how an unpaid volunteer living in Chicago could have possibly been aware of a closed press call happening downstate, and how that volunteer might have known to parrot Congressman Davis’ talking points. Yet, Butcher still declined comment. Klitzing acknowledged he did not act alone, and that he was asked to make the call and interject with questions. He said it was his idea to offer up a fake name. Klitzing also defended crashing Dirksen Londrigan’s press call, saying “it happens all the time.” The organizer of the call did not find it common or comical. “Impersonating a college student in order to lob false partisan attacks is dirty politics and shows how low Rodney Davis’ campaign is willing to sink,” Muller told WCIA. She claimed Davis “can’t defend his record, so he’s sending other people to make false attacks. Rodney Davis should condemn these tactics and stop the dirty politics.” It’s unclear if Congressman Davis has any knowledge of the hoax phone call his campaign commissioned, or if he’s aware of WCIA’s persistent efforts to seek any comment or explanation from his campaign manager. His staff has taken the unusual step of repeatedly ignoring phone calls, text messages and emails from WCIA’s political reporters, and no longer sends press releases or notices of media availability to WCIA’s political staff, despite frequent requests to include them in media releases. In addition, WCIA has sent six separate invitations for Congressman Davis to appear on Capitol Connection since his November 2018 election victory. His office has ignored or declined each one.)

Tinoco, an agent of 14 years and U.S. military veteran, said his fellow agents in Texas’s Rio Grande Valley are repeatedly falling ill with flu. They’re also seeing scabies, tuberculosis, chicken pox, and lice from waves of about 1,200 migrants crossing through their facilities daily and are worried their uniforms will carry contagions. And that’s not all, he said: Many agents are being harassed in public. “We’re completely exhausted,” Tinoco said in an interview, not speaking in his official capacity. “It takes a toll on the human spirit.” Long work hours and exposure to diseases are driving agents to retire early and take sick leave, union officials and government watchdogs say. While public outrage has focused on the separation of families and children, overcrowding, and unsanitary conditions, policymakers are increasingly concerned about attrition and suicide among the agents on the front lines of the migrant surge. The border agency for years has struggled with attrition, but this year has been one of the toughest in the 95-year old patrol’s history. Migrant children and families crossed the border in record numbers while agents saw their pay delayed by a 35-day government shutdown. The patrol is approximately 7,000 agents short, the Government Accountability Office reported in March. More than 700 customs officers from around the country were diverted this spring when apprehensions soared to more than 130,000. That division of the border agency now faces a shortage of approximately 3,500 officers, said the National Treasury Employees Union, which represents officers.)
