CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— OUTSTANDING: Rauner not a fan of legalizing marijuana – Rick Pearson
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-morning-spin-chicago-city-council-member-calls-colleague-chump-alderman-takes-it-back-20170323-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Responding to recently introduced legislation that would legalize marijuana in Illinois, Gov. Bruce Rauner had a less than enthusiastic response but said he’d be willing to study it. “I’m not a believer that legalizing more drugs will help our society so I’m not philosophically enthusiastic about it, but I’m also open to what actually works to make life better to people,” Rauner told the “Roe Conn Show” on WGN-AM 720 on Thursday. “I’m hearing some pretty bad stories. Now, I haven’t studied it. I think we should do a thoughtful analysis of what’s happening in these other states. I’m hearing a lot of trouble,” he said. “My friends in Colorado have told me some pretty terrible things about addiction problems and behavior problems, etc. over there in Denver.” To sum it up, Rauner said, “I just believe we’re conducting a massive human experiment as we legalize these drugs.”  One Democrat running for the right to take on Rauner next year endorsed the legislation. “Legalizing recreational marijuana is a social justice issue,” said Ald. Ameya Pawar in a statement. “It will reduce the amount we spend as a society arresting and jailing people for low-level nonviolent offenses, when our criminal justice system should be focused on reducing violence,” he said.)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/commentary/ct-trump-health-care-congress-immigration-krauthammer-perspec-0324-20170323-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The media. Trump is right. It is the opposition party. Indeed, furiously so, often indulging in appalling overkill. It’s sometimes embarrassing to read the front pages of the major newspapers, festooned as they are with anti-Trump editorializing masquerading as news. Nonetheless, if you take the view from 30,000 feet, better this than a press acquiescing on bended knee, where it spent most of the Obama years in a slavish Pravda-like thrall. Every democracy needs an opposition press. We damn well have one now. Taken together — and suspending judgment on which side is right on any particular issue — it is deeply encouraging that the sinews of institutional resistance to a potentially threatening executive remain quite resilient. James Madison’s genius was to understand that the best bulwark against tyranny was not virtue — virtue helps, but should never be relied upon — but ambition counteracting ambition, faction counteracting faction. You see it even in the confirmation process for Neil Gorsuch, Trump’s supremely qualified and measured Supreme Court nominee. He’s a slam dunk, yet some factions have scraped together a campaign to block him. Their ads are plaintive and pathetic. Yet I find them warmly reassuring. What a country — where even the vacuous have a voice. The anti-Trump opposition flatters itself as “the resistance.” As if this is Vichy France. It’s not. It’s 21st century America. And the good news is that the checks and balances are working just fine.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: This unfortunate outcome was not surprising to anyone who has watched seminaries throughout the country embrace and elevate radical “identity theology.” Identity politics have been dividing Americans for decades. Now identity theologies are splitting Christian denominations, colleges and seminaries in similar fashion. Entire theologies have developed from one’s self-orientation in an attempt to denounce patriarchy, sexism, racism and homophobia. Feminist theology and black-liberation theology produced womanist theology. Now queer theology asks, in the words of Marcella Althaus-Reid, “What can sexual stories from fetishism and sadomasochism tell us about our relationship with God, Jesus and Mary?”)

http://www.salon.com/2017/03/23/the-breitbart-fear-federal-employees-are-scared-theyll-be-targeted-by-conservative-media/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: President Donald Trump has already left the State Department in chaos with his massive layoffs and marginalization of Secretary of State Rex Tillerson. Now it appears that, because of Trump’s past habit of getting his information from right-wing news outlets, many government staffers across the executive branch are afraid that conservative media hit pieces against them will cost them their careers. The belief that executive branch staffers are insufficiently loyal to Trump and are secretly working to promote the policies of President Barack Obama has inspired a wave of attack articles from right-wing sites like Breitbart and the Conservative Review, according to Politico. Breitbart has even published a list of so-called “Obama loyalist bureaucrats” that it urged Trump to “either fire immediately or remove from their current positions.” Breitbart’s former CEO, Steve Bannon, is currently Trump’s chief strategist.)

They stressed that I was 100% German national origin and that I had been baptized, raised, and confirmed as a Missouri Synod Lutheran.  In my defense, I stressed that all my ancestors had immigrated to northeast Illinois during the 1840s and 1850s, that my grandfather on my father’s side fought the Germans in WWI, that my uncles on my mother’s side fought the Germans in WWII, and that my father would have fought the Germans in WWII if he had not been 4-F.)
https://catholiccitizens.org/news/70421/ending-white-privilege-starts-ending-jewish-privilege-fliers-hung-u-illinois-chicago/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Fliers recently hung at the University of Illinois at Chicago declare “Ending White Privilege Starts With Ending Jewish Privilege.”  The fliers use Pew Research Center data in an attempt to validate the statement, including that while Jews make up 2 percent of the population in the United States that “44% of these Jewish Americans are in the top 1%.” “Is the 1% straight, white men? Or is the 1% Jewish?” the flier questions. The university acted swiftly, issuing a statement March 15, the same day the fliers were found on campus. “Such actions do not reflect the values we hold as a community. Acts that invoke hatred or violence toward members of our community will not be tolerated on our campus,” campus officials said. “We strongly encourage all members of our university to exercise their right to free speech in a manner that recognizes these principles and avoids prejudice or stereotypes,” they added. Despite the campuswide statement, more anti-Semitic fliers were found posted on campus over the weekend. One discussed “Jewish privilege” with regard to “the special privilege when it comes to top universities.” Another linked the de-hiring of Professor Steven Salaita with then-Chancellor Phyllis Wise’s meeting with “a wealthy Jewish Donor in Chicago.” A third criticized jail time for those who deny the Holocaust. Still another flier equated Auschwitz with Gaza, claiming the “largest Concentration Camp in the world today is owned and operated by Zionists.” While the fliers did not identify the student or organization responsible, they did include various hashtags: #BlackLivesMatter, #WeAreAllMuslims, #WhitePrivilege and #StandwithPalestine. Student Eva Zeltser, who posted images of the fliers on Facebook, said her “heart is broken.” “While I try to abstain from writing personal narratives on Facebook, enough is enough,” she stated. “If you are against hate crimes against one group, you should be against these acts of violence for ALL groups. Found all over the UIC campus. Things like these posters are actively posted to catalyze anti-Semitism and increase hate toward Jews.” The incident at the University of Illinois at Chicago comes as a strong uptick in anti-Semitic incidents on campuses nationwide has been observed. UIC Levine Hillel Center’s Executive Director Rabbi Seth Winberg condemned the posters in an email to The College Fix, noting they have caused anger and sadness. The center asked the university to “conduct a full investigation and to address the campus culture that would allow such hateful targeting of Jews.” “We will not let these hateful flyers deter us from our work to build a vibrant community at UIC,” Winberg added.)

WALL STREET JOURNAL
— ‘Media Attention’ and IRS Abuse  A simple rule fix could end partisan targeting tomorrow. – JOHN J. VECCHIONE  (DIERSEN: Were it not Henry Hyde’s intervention, IRS would never have approved Adversity.Net’s 501(c)(3) application. SEE:
http://www.adversity.net/)
https://www.wsj.com/articles/media-attention-and-irs-abuse-1490137171
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Internal Revenue Service’s targeting of Americans for their political views may have ended with the Obama administration—or even with its exposure in 2013. But it could easily recur. Even now, an internal IRS rule singles out applicants for nonprofit status who might be tied to anything newsworthy. The genesis of the targeting scandal was Section 7.29.3 of the Internal Revenue Manual. As noted in a report my organization is issuing Wednesday, this manual dictates how IRS employees handle everything from customer service to criminal investigations. This particular section tells them to flag for further review any application for tax-exempt status that might “attract media or Congressional attention.” That’s a broad, vague and subjective command that career IRS employees are nevertheless required to follow. Emails between IRS personnel make clear that low-level employees were guided by this rule throughout the targeting scandal. They repeatedly cited “media attention” on the Tea Party as the reason to single out and delay applications from conservative groups. This rule means that IRS enforcement reflects the ideological biases of the media. Aside from a small number of groups related to the Occupy Wall Street movement and the defunct advocacy group Acorn, libertarian and free-market groups were almost exclusively targeted. These provisions of the IRS manual have nothing to do with the merits of a nonprofit application and everything to do with keeping the agency from looking bad. It is inappropriate for a group’s tax-exempt status to be deep-sixed because of negative publicity. In the targeting scandal, this approach allowed partisan concerns to overtake the application process, resulting in the unfair treatment of political viewpoints at odds with the Obama administration. Equal justice under the law demands that the IRS abandon the “newsworthy” criterion. To date, however, the agency has promised only to stop making lists of targeted groups “until further notice.” Even if the halt were permanent, it wouldn’t be enough. IRS officials are still required to follow the manual and pull high-profile applications for enhanced scrutiny. The IRS can change its employee manual today. No new law is required. The simplest explanation for why the agency has not done so lies in the nature of bureaucracies—they refuse to relinquish power even after demonstrated abuse. The procedure for newsworthy applicants provides a convenient cover to shield improper partisan decision-making.)

https://www.wsj.com/articles/as-skills-shift-for-high-paying-jobs-women-see-advantages-1490101201
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Men are losing ground in the labor market, and it’s not just the ones without college degrees. Even those with higher education are seeing their chances of holding a good job drop relative to women, according to new research. Three economists found that the high-paying occupations of the past few decades—from doctors to software engineers to financial advisers—require increasing levels of interpersonal skills such as collaboration, empathy and managing others. “That’s been favoring women in high-paying jobs,” said one of the study’s authors Henry Siu, a professor at the University of British Columbia. Women’s advancement in those jobs accelerated from 1980 to 2000. The trend slowed from 2000 to 2014, but even during that period, college-educated women saw their job prospects essentially hold steady while male peers’ prospects declined, according to Mr. Siu and his co-authors, Guido Cortes at the University of Manchester in England and Nir Jaimovich at the University of Southern California. The economists have been presenting their working paper, “The End of Men and Rise of Women in the High-Skilled Labor Market,” at economics conferences in recent months. Men are still better-represented in so-called good jobs, which the authors define as paying in the top 25% of all occupations or requiring mostly cognitive skills like problem-solving and analysis. But their chances of being in such jobs have fallen over time while women’s chances are rising. In 1980, 66.2% of male college graduates worked in cognitive jobs; by 2000, that proportion had fallen to 63.3%, according to U.S. census data reviewed by the economists. Meanwhile, 58.8% of college-educated women held such roles in 2000, up from 54.2% in 1980. By 2014, 61.4% of college-educated men were in those good jobs, compared with 57.8% for their female counterparts.)

I have $72,135 less to spend each year because my GS-13 Step 10 GAO salary was $122,991 in today’s dollars and my Civil Service Retirement System pension is only $50,856 or $72,135 less or 59% less.)

http://dna.ancestry.com, my ancestry is 33% Europe West, 28% Scandinavia, 24% Great Britain, 11% Ireland, 2% Europe East, 1% Finland/Northwest Russia, and 1% Italy/Greece.)
http://barbwire.com/2017/03/18/the-price-of-privilege/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A proposal has been making its way through the social justice sewer system to have white people pay a 5% privilege tax. That would be a lot cheaper than the current wealth redistribution built into the tax system. In 2004, black people made up 12% of the population and 20% of those who didn’t file taxes at all. It was estimated that 50.7% of African American households, 52% of Hispanic households and 37% of white households paid no income taxes. The numbers would likely have only gotten worse after the recession, which destroyed large numbers of African-American jobs, and the Obama years, which traded social welfare for economic progress. An otherwise equal tax system with a 5% white privilege tax would be an enormous improvement. How do you calculate the income losses for a white student shut out of college by affirmative action or a white business owner’s income losses due to preferential business programs aimed at minorities? The white student would happily pay that 5% to be allowed to go to college instead of being told that more diverse students with worse grades will cut ahead of him in line because they are “disadvantaged”. It would be easier for the white business owner to calculate in a fixed privilege tax for an otherwise competitive market than the intangible forms of diversity discrimination that rig the game. A 5% white privilege tax would be far too honest. The real tax is hidden and much higher. But the white privilege tax does raise all sorts of fascinating questions. How do you calculate it? It can’t be by appearing or identifying as a minority. Such an unfair performative system would allow Rachel Dolezal, aka Nkechi Diallo, to escape paying her white privilege tax after unfairly exploiting her white privilege to head the NAACP. If white people can just braid their hair in dreadlocks and spend a week in a tanning salon before renaming themselves Mkesi Daluboo or Willami Clintonoo, what good is a white privilege tax? The only fair way to do it is with a DNA test.)

https://patriotpost.us/posts/48070
(FROM THE ARTICLE: It’s no secret — at least to those informed by anything other than Leftmedia propaganda — that jihadis infiltrate the ranks of “refugees” in order to carry out terrorist attacks. Even Barack Obama’s State Department quietly acknowledged that fact. While American judges bemoan Donald Trump’s travel ban because it “targets Muslims,” some Muslims certainly don’t have any trouble making it all about religion. As Gary Bauer notes, “A diplomatic spat erupted recently when Turkey wanted to send diplomats to the Netherlands to campaign among the Turkish residents there for an upcoming constitutional referendum in Turkey. Dutch officials refused to allow the visit, which coincided with their own hotly contested election, and the Turkish government erupted in rage.” “Shame on the EU,” Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan thundered. “Down with your European principles, values and justice.” He wasn’t done, claiming, “They started a clash between the cross and the crescent. There is no other explanation.” Worse, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu threatened, “Soon wars of religion … will start in Europe.” This might happen because, he added, “We could open the way for 15,000 refugees … each month and blow [Europe’s] mind.” Now, a brief history lesson. Less than 100 years after Mohammad’s death, Muslims were invading Europe — first Spain and then France before Frankish King Charles Martel defeated them at the Battle of Tours in 732. Hundreds of years of subsequent Muslim aggression led to the Crusades. So no, Dutch politicians did not “start a clash between the cross and the crescent.” Muslims did that 1,400 years ago and they’ve never stopped. The battle just looks different now, and the “army” is a horde of “refugees.” Did we mention that Turkey is a member of NATO and ostensibly and ally of Western Europe?)

http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20170310/news/170319953/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Two of five candidates vying to lead the state’s second-largest school district say a newly adopted high school social studies curriculum promotes “racism against white males” at a forum Thursday. Incumbent board President Donna Smith of Hanover Park, and incumbent trustees Veronica Noland and Cody Holt, both of Elgin, face challengers Melissa Owens of Bartlett and Enoch Essendrop of Elgin for three 4-year term seats on the Elgin Area School District U-46 board April 4 hosted by the district’s Citizens’ Advisory Council. At a February school board meeting, Holt and board member Jeanette Ward voted against adoption of the new curriculum, which Ward said had a “pervasive liberal bias.” Ward quoted the following passage about discrimination from the textbook “Macgruder’s American Government”: “White Americans have been historically reluctant to yield to nonwhite Americans a full and equal place in the social, economic and political life of this nation. Over time, the principal targets of that ethnic prejudice have been African-Americans, Native Americans, Asian-Americans and Hispanic Americans. The white-male-dominated power structure has also been slow to recognize the claims of women to an equal place in American society.” She said it “smacks of racism against white males.” The curriculum was approved by a 5-2 board vote. Essendrop, 19, a student at Providence Baptist College in Elgin running on a similar platform as Holt, said he shared Ward’s perspective. “I can’t believe that we find ourselves in the 21st century still judging people by the color of their skin and not the content of their character,” he said, paraphrasing the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech. “We need to stop putting people in different groups and admit that we are 100 percent Americans.” Noland, 50, an alumna of the district’s Hispanic Parent Leadership Institute elected to her first term in April 2013, rejected Ward’s notion. “I believe my fellow board member’s comments are actually quite racist,” she said. “I’m opposed to censorship of materials … you head down the road toward book burning and I am completely opposed to that.”  She added, it is wrong to impose a “narrow ideology” over an entire school district. Holt, 25, a 2010 graduate of Larkin High School elected in April 2015 to a 2-year unexpired term, said he would like to see the district adopt “curriculum that presents both sides of any issue, that way students can come to their own conclusions.” “Being able to send your child to a school that sets its own curriculum is where we need to go in the 21st century,” Holt said. Smith, 59, who has served on the board since 2001, said she voted for adopting the curriculum because it went through a process of evaluation. “It has been vetted by a lot of educators,” she said adding, anyone can find something offensive in any textbook. “I have the faith in our educators that they would take those textbooks and supplement them with other resources.” Owens, 48, chairwoman of the U-46 Citizens’ Advisory Council, said she agreed with the board’s decision on the curriculum as well as providing cultural competency training for teachers. “We have to recognize the fact that we have a minority-majority district,” she said adding such training allows teachers to recognize that “students see things through different filters based on their experiences.”)

This is an important issue to me because I know what it is like to grow up with food insecurity,” said Lieutenant Governor Evelyn Sanguinetti. “My mother had me when she was only 15, and my parents often had to choose between paying the rent and putting food on the table.” Lieutenant Governor Sanguinetti addressed a group of students from Marshall High School and talked about her own experiences. The students were invited to the “Give a Child a Breakfast” event by Kellogg’s, where they had breakfast, had the opportunity to meet the lieutenant governor and play basketball with Butler. “Child hunger is not an issue isolated to large cities – it is prevalent in all 102 counties in Illinois,” Lieutenant Governor Sanguinetti said. “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. We want our kids to have access to a healthy breakfast so they can stay alert in the classroom and excel in school.”)

What women’s jobs have you held?  I washed dishes for the minimum wage in the basement of the S.S. Kresges in Chicago Heights during my junior and senior years at Crete-Monee High School. My understanding is a) that I was the first and only White male to hold that job and b) that I held that job longer than anyone else.  Was I disadvantaged?  Neither of my parents had attended college, my father was the first of his ancestors to earn a high school diploma, and my mother never attended high school.  I had Osgood-Schlatter disease (SEE: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osgood%E2%80%93Schlatter_disease)  My vision has never been correctable to 20/20.  I have partial red/green color blindness. That is a big reason why Trump won and why Clinton lost. How soon, if not already, will anti-Trump individuals, organizations, companies, governments, and countries post signs that say members of the following groups are NOT WANTED: Trump supporter, Protestant, conservative, Republican, American, White, male, older, rich, gun owners, German American, draft avoiders, and/or those whose ancestors have been in America for long time?)
http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20170307/NEWS02/170309909
(FROM THE ARTICLE: But immigration analysts say the economic benefits of curbing immigration are overblown. Economists, in general, have found immigration adds more to the economy than it takes away. That means that in cities like Chicago, where population declines and workforce shortages are offset by immigrants, policies advocated by the new administration not only aren’t likely to help—they could actually hurt.)

MADISON RECORD
— Are reporters informing the public well enough amidst state’s financial crisis? – Amanda Robert (DIERSEN: Diersen has been sending GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails out since 2000, every morning since 2004, and also every evening since 2015. Virtually every one of those emails has included a link to at least one article about the “state’s financial crisis.”  But sadly, my critics/opponents in Wheaton, in Glen Ellyn, in Milton Township, in DuPage County, and in Illinois have lots of religious, government, political, and/or financial clout, and they have made it very clear that they will have their operatives and their dupes viciously destroy anyone who reads the emails or encourages others to read the emails. Ives and I are both members of the Milton Township Republican Central Committee (MTRCC), but sadly, few MTRCC members read GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails, and many of them read the emails only to get information to harm me.)
http://madisonrecord.com/stories/511087491-are-reporters-informing-the-public-well-enough-amidst-state-s-financial-crisis
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Ives says that when she tries to inform the public through town hall meetings, less than a dozen people show up. “I have three town halls scheduled this month and if I am lucky, maybe 100 people will show up even after having sent media alerts out, posting on Facebook and e-mail, and sending out district-wide robo calls,” she said. Ives explains that most people are too busy, or have given in to the idea that “nothing will change” or “all politicians are corrupt.” “I find most people have little understanding of the issues that created our budget crisis, the possible solutions and their implications, and the truth that Illinois is way outside the norm in terms of financial stability compared to other states,” Ives said. “To steal from an old saying, you can offer the information, but people can still refuse to take it in.” In a state like Illinois, with its history of complicated financial struggles and political battles, what is the responsibility of media that is supposed to serve as watchdog? Are reporters telling all of the stories that need to be told, monitoring the conduct of government officials and alerting citizens when they have acted irresponsibly or improperly? Diana Rickert, vice president of communications at the Illinois Policy Institute, who previously worked as a journalist, contends that most citizens are aware of the culture of corruption and political machines. They realize that they pay immense property taxes and face massive public pension debt, now up to $130 billion in their state. She says the media should not be complicit in the financial crisis or give public officials a free pass, particularly as Illinois saw record outmigration in the past year and lost more than 1 million people in the past decade. “The very best journalists are skeptical of government and question everything they say, and journalists owe it to their readers to do this,” Rickert said. “Journalists should not be a publicity arm for local, state or federal government, or trade tough stories for access.” Stephanie Craft, an associate professor of journalism at the University of Illinois, points out that the financial situation in Illinois serves as an example of polarization that is occurring across the country. She says the media has the responsibility of identifying things the public should know, and then getting public officials, business leaders or others in power to talk about them. She says that role becomes more crucial when “you have two sides that are dug in,” like Illinois party leaders over the state’s budget. “If they aren’t talking to each other, it makes it tricky for journalists, but also more of a priority for them to step in and try to get information from those sides that might be harder to get otherwise,” Craft said. “I feel like, as a citizen of Illinois, not only are the two sides not talking to each other, but they’re not talking to anyone. “If there weren’t journalists pressing for answers, there would just be a whole lot of silence.” Craft adds that citizens, as well as public officials, share in that responsibility. Citizens need to seek out a variety of sources of information and demand a certain level of performance from the media and public officials, she says, while public officials need to consider the importance of the media and not see its work as something negative. She contends that the current level of trust in several different institutions, especially the media, is low. She says that puts reporters in a difficult position, because while they are trying to obtain information and present it in an understandable way, they are also fighting criticism about how they do their jobs. Craft also says that when facing a public that may not trust them, reporters should consider being more explicit about their sources and methods. For example, she says, they should mention the people they tried to interview, even if they didn’t talk to them, and the parts of the story they don’t know, but are still trying to figure out. “I think more of that might help, as a byproduct, educate people about the journalism news gathering process and help them understand better the news that they’re reading,” Craft said. Craft adds that even in the current environment, where more people can quickly participate in creating and sharing the news through cell phone photos and video, and social media, reporters should appreciate that they are the only group committing a significant amount of time and resources to uncovering and disseminating information. “There is a role that an institutional kind of press can play in being that entity that can try to hold those in power to account in a way that is harder, not impossible, but harder for a general mass of online people to do,” she said.)

http://www.conservativehq.com/node/25232
(FROM THE ARTICLE: It is no secret that the Wall Street – Washington – Silicon Valley Axis hates Donald Trump and the millions of “deplorable” Americans who elected him to stop the globalist destruction of our country and to end the PC culture that liberals use to enforce their worldview on the rest of America. We have long shared the view of then-Senator Jeff Sessions that “prominent amnesty advocates, including [Facebook CEO] Mark Zuckerberg and top Obama administration officials, have argued that amnesty is a civil right. Mr. Zuckerberg’s motivation is not elusive. He heads a lobbying group representing many of his industry’s wealthiest CEOs, and their companies wish to extract generous guest-worker programs from Congress. Similar efforts are underway from other CEOs seeking new workers for everything from manufacturing to construction to restaurant jobs. Presumably, Mr. Zuckerberg believes it is more advantageous to frame the group’s lobbying as a civil-rights crusade than as a corporate crusade for lower-cost foreign labor.” So, it should surprise no one that California’s Far Left tech oligarchs have begun to surreptitiously use their control of social media platforms and media to undermine support for President Trump and his agenda by blocking pro-Trump content to starve conservative online media outlets of viewers and advertising dollars. Our problems with Facebook censorship began when we made attacking globalism a major editorial effort in the final crucial weeks before the election and we suddenly discovered that our pro-Trump or anti-Hillary Clinton articles posted to Facebook were being taken down or the links were being disabled. The message “Warning: This Message Contains Blocked Content. Your message couldn’t be sent because it includes content that other people on Facebook have reported as abusive” would pop up when CHQ readers tried to post or distribute CHQ content through Facebook. Inquiries to Facebook produced the excuse that “community objections” were to blame and after a lag of hours or days the links would be restored. In responses that sounded like they were written by Lois Lerner, we were assured that the problem had nothing to do with ConservativeHQ’s name or the conservative content of our articles, but the problem continued to grow. After much back-and-forth, the next excuse offered was that ConservativeHQ’s landing page had too many ads and redirects, and that we should “Avoid ad creative that baits people to click on it, such as overly cropped ad images or ad copy that may be shocking or sexual.”  This was patent nonsense.)

FED SMITH
— What Does It Take to be a Thrift Savings Plan Millionaire? – Lyn Alden (DIERSEN: While I worked for IRS 1971-1980 and for GAO 1980-1997, my Democrat superiors a) knew how much my Civil Service Retirement System pension would be, b) knew when my wife and I paid off our mortgage, c) knew how much money we had saved for our retirement, and d) knew much more about our finances. They used that information to paint us as being filthy rich DINKs (dual income, no kids). My Democrat superiors were moral relativists who believed that their end justifies their means.  They used their knowledge of our wealth a) to justify their wasting my career and b) to justify their forcing me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old.)
http://www.fedsmith.com/2017/03/06/what-does-it-take-to-be-a-tsp-millionaire/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Thanks to the slow but steady march of inflation year after year, a million dollars isn’t what it used to be. Still, it’s a target that few people achieve in their lifetimes, and it can go a long way to a comfortable retirement. FedSmith regularly keeps track of the number of TSP millionaires, federal employees that have accumulated more than $1 million in their TSP account. The number fluctuates each year, having grown from about 200 in early 2012 to well past 3,000 today, thanks to the eight-year bull market we’ve all enjoyed. But what does it take to get to that level? For starters, here’s a chart that shows how much wealth you can build based on your monthly saving amount (vertical axis) and annualized rate of return (horizontal axis) in 25 years: . . . The chart is inflation-adjusted to 2.5% per year. Values over $1 million are highlighted in green. This chart applies broadly to a variety of investment types, but when looking specifically at the TSP, there are two main constraints: Assuming a buy-and-hold strategy, TSP rates of return are limited, roughly, by the maximum rate of return of the C fund, S fund, and I fund, the three equity funds available for investment. This caps TSP long-term returns at around 10% per year or less, based on historical performance of the best of these indices. This will be lower for a more balanced portfolio that includes some fixed-income investments with the G fund or F fund. You can only contribute up to $18,000 per year, with another 5% from agency-matching. If you earn $120,000 per year, for example, the maximum you can save per year in your TSP is $24,000, or $2,000 per month on that chart. Depending on how the markets perform over the next two and a half decades, it may be possible for federal employees that max out their TSP contributions each and every year to hit a million in inflation-adjusted value (or about $1.8 million in face value) during that timeline. For most federal investors, however, it will take longer than that. John Bogle, the founder of Vanguard, currently expects about 4% annual returns over the next 10 years from the US stock market, due to the high valuations of the market currently. A report in 2016 by McKinsey & Company estimates 4-6.5% annual returns for US markets over the next 20 years. Nobody can know for sure what returns will be going forward, but due to how highly valued the markets are currently (based on metrics like the Shiller PE ratio), the chance of reaching or exceeding the historical 9-10% rate of return is arguably not very likely going forward. Here are three examples for how a TSP account may grow over a federal career:)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Trey Gowdy criticized journalists reporting on alleged wire-tapping at Trump Tower in New York City, for relying on “anonymous sources” and “leaked information” during a Monday interview on Fox News. “I think Congress is much better equipped to do investigations than journalists are,” the South Carolina Republican told host bill Hemmer. “We can’t rely on anonymous sources. We can’t rely on leaked information, classified information which in and of itself is a crime.” “So with all due respect, to the reporters, I can’t cross-examine anonymous sources. You can’t even directly examine them. It’s a lot easier to write a news piece than it is to conduct an investigation.”  “What Congress needs is access to the witnesses, access to the documents and they need to understand we don’t run parallel, criminal investigations,” Gowdy continued. “We have a job to do, but it is not to investigate crime.”)

BETTER GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION
— DOROTHY BROWN OFFERS POLITICAL ADVICE — FOR A PRICE – Katie Drews and Dane Placko
http://www.bettergov.org/news/dorothy-brown-offers-political-advice-%E2%80%94-for-a-price
(FROM THE ARTICLE: WHY IT MATTERS: Cook County Circuit Court Clerk Dorothy Brown has long been dogged by allegations of pay-to-play in the administration of her office even as she also faces criticism for sloppy and inefficient record keeping. The day after federal prosecutors said Cook County Circuit Court Clerk Dorothy Brown received what they described as bribe money from an employee, Brown was collecting money in a different way – by selling political advice for nearly $200 a head. Brown, who was elected last year to her fifth term as clerk despite a federal grand jury investigation of the hiring and promotion practices within her office, hosted a training seminar on a Saturday last month for people interested in running for public office. For $175 a ticket, plus $19.95 for an optional handbook, the day-long event promised “instruction on every aspect of being a candidate as a whole,” according to a flyer for the event. “I realized that a lot of people want to run for public office but they don’t really know what to do,” Brown said during the program. “I’m about the business of not being selfish but giving back, and that’s what this is all about.” As part of a Better Government Association and FOX 32 investigation, a BGA reporter paid the fees and attended the first half of the seminar, which took place in a hotel conference room in the Illinois Medical District on Chicago’s West Side. Among the eight other participants, whose names the BGA obtained either from a sign-in sheet or when they introduced themselves to the others in the room: a Cook County judge, one of Brown’s neighbors and two individuals with apparent ties to Brown’s office – a man named Christopher Hodges and a woman named Zoe Neely. A Christopher Hodges has worked in the clerk’s office since 2004 and is a manager making $56,000 a year, according to 2016 payroll records. A Facebook profile page that identifies Hodges as an employee of Brown’s office has a photo of the same man who attended the seminar. The Facebook page also states Hodges is a “servant” at Brown’s church, King of Glory Tabernacle Church of God in Christ, on Chicago’s South Side. Neely is identified on LinkedIn as Zalita Zoe Neely. Her mother is Madina Neely, who has been employed in the clerk’s office since 2008 and has worked as Brown’s scheduler, according to sources. According to payroll records, Madina Neely was an office assistant in 2015 making $37,000 a year but last year made $63,000 as a manager. None of them could be reached for comment. Brown’s spokeswoman Jalyne Strong declined to answer questions about their employment or on the seminar as a whole. Instead, Strong said in an emailed statement the seminar was “not a part of the operations” of the clerk’s office and that she had “no information about it.” She added that “any attendees would have had to learn about it independent of the clerk’s office.” Experts contacted by the BGA questioned whether it’s appropriate for the clerk to accept money from her employees. Even though the event was open to the public and outside work hours, the experts said Brown opened herself up to the criticism that employees could feel obligated to participate since she is their boss. “You want to make sure protections are in place to make sure they don’t feel pressure to be part of anything they don’t want to,” said Sarah Brune, executive director of the Illinois Campaign for Political Reform. “It’s a delicate relationship when it’s boss to employee.” This isn’t the first time questions have been raised about Brown’s interactions with her employees.)

FEDERALIST
— But He Folds! 5 Big Fights Where Trump Is Backing Down  The whole point of Donald Trump was supposed to be: BUT HE FIGHTS. But we shouldn’t be surprised to see the Trump administration’s bluster melting away. – Robert Tracinski
http://thefederalist.com/2017/03/06/but-he-folds-5-big-fights-where-trump-is-backing-down/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: 5) Sending up trial balloons about amnesty for illegal immigrants. Just before his recent address to Congress, Trump sent up trial balloons to the press about opening up a “path to citizenship” for some illegal immigrants, precisely the sort of thing he condemned during his campaign as “amnesty.” This caused some of his supporters, including that guy with the lovely avatar of Lady Liberty telling pesky immigrants to get off her lawn—to panic. Now, maybe Trump was just yanking the media’s chain. But this looks to me more like a negotiator taking a hard line in public while trying to hint behind the scenes that he’s really open to a deal. We know from Trump’s history with “Dreamers” that he probably wants to support some form of amnesty. But he painted himself into a corner by starting his campaign with disparaging remarks about immigrants and recruiting a support base of anti-immigration fanatics. So he’s trying to figure a way out of the box and toward a deal. Maybe it’s true that “Most Trump supporters can recognize that his initial promises of mass deportation were an opening bid that would eventually get bargained down to something more humane.” But that kind of sounds like politics as usual, right? I’ll grant that some of these issues are not settled yet, and maybe Trump will stick to a hard line on some of them. My point is that we shouldn’t be surprised at signs that he won’t. We shouldn’t be surprised if the bluster of the campaign season is melting as it encounters the reality of political compromise and our political system’s natural resistance to radical change. I’ve known all along that the reason you’re not getting everything you want isn’t because we didn’t have the right leader who would be bolder and more shirtlessly manly than everyone else. The reason is that the American people are not overwhelmingly in favor of your wish list, or mine. This has been true for all of my adult life. I’ve managed to get used to it and to expect a series of close contests, some incremental victories, and if we’re lucky now and again a bold step forward, while we work at the more difficult job of long-term ideological change. It’s a job that calls for the real tough guys, the ones who are willing to put in hard and unrewarding work over the long haul. Trump supporters who are ready to grow out of seductively easy tactics like calling their opponents rude names are welcome to join us. In the meantime, take what you can get from the Trump administration, but don’t be too crushed when he turns out to be just another politician.)

https://www.academia.org/betsy-devos-pledged-to-protect-free-speech-at-schools/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: If U. S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos came to the Conservative Political Action Conference in order to establish her street cred with conservatives, she probably succeeded. “I am, perhaps, the first person in America to tell Bernie Sanders that there is no free lunch,” she told the audience at CPAC. Perhaps more importantly, she showed the audience of college students that in current and upcoming battles over free speech on campus, she has their back. “The faculty, from adjuncts to deans, tell you what to do and, more ominously, what to think,” she said at CPAC. She urged the students to take a page from her boss’s book and “e-mail, tweet and snapchat every politician who thinks the status quo is okay.” The National Education Association (NEA) teachers union famously opposed DeVos’s nomination. “Betsy DeVos, who has spent decades working to dismantle public education and privatize public schools, is dangerously unqualified and lacks the experience we should all demand in America’s secretary of education,” NEA President Lily Eskelsen García stated in January. “If confirmed, she would become the first secretary of education with zero experience with public schools.”)

WALL STREET JOURNAL
— The Exhaustion of American Liberalism  White guilt gave us a mock politics based on the pretense of moral authority. – SHELBY STEELE  (DIERSEN: Who despises you, if not hates you? The following despise me, if not hate me: those who are anti-Trump, anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, anti-German Americans, anti-draft avoiders, and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America longer than their ancestors.)
https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-exhaustion-of-american-liberalism-1488751826
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The recent flurry of marches, demonstrations and even riots, along with the Democratic Party’s spiteful reaction to the Trump presidency, exposes what modern liberalism has become: a politics shrouded in pathos. Unlike the civil-rights movement of the 1950s and ’60s, when protesters wore their Sunday best and carried themselves with heroic dignity, today’s liberal marches are marked by incoherence and downright lunacy—hats designed to evoke sexual organs, poems that scream in anger yet have no point to make, and an hysterical anti-Americanism. All this suggests lostness, the end of something rather than the beginning. What is ending? America, since the ’60s, has lived through what might be called an age of white guilt. We may still be in this age, but the Trump election suggests an exhaustion with the idea of white guilt, and with the drama of culpability, innocence and correctness in which it mires us. White guilt is not actual guilt. Surely most whites are not assailed in the night by feelings of responsibility for America’s historical mistreatment of minorities. Moreover, all the actual guilt in the world would never be enough to support the hegemonic power that the mere pretense of guilt has exercised in American life for the last half-century. White guilt is not angst over injustices suffered by others; it is the terror of being stigmatized with America’s old bigotries—racism, sexism, homophobia and xenophobia. To be stigmatized as a fellow traveler with any of these bigotries is to be utterly stripped of moral authority and made into a pariah. The terror of this, of having “no name in the street” as the Bible puts it, pressures whites to act guiltily even when they feel no actual guilt. White guilt is a mock guilt, a pretense of real guilt, a shallow etiquette of empathy, pity and regret. It is also the heart and soul of contemporary liberalism. This liberalism is the politics given to us by white guilt, and it shares white guilt’s central corruption. It is not real liberalism, in the classic sense. It is a mock liberalism. Freedom is not its raison d’être; moral authority is. When America became stigmatized in the ’60s as racist, sexist and militaristic, it wanted moral authority above all else. Subsequently the American left reconstituted itself as the keeper of America’s moral legitimacy. (Conservatism, focused on freedom and wealth, had little moral clout.) From that followed today’s markers of white guilt—political correctness, identity politics, environmental orthodoxy, the diversity cult and so on. This was the circumstance in which innocence of America’s bigotries and dissociation from the American past became a currency of hardcore political power. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, good liberals both, pursued power by offering their candidacies as opportunities for Americans to document their innocence of the nation’s past. “I had to vote for Obama,” a rock-ribbed Republican said to me. “I couldn’t tell my grandson that I didn’t vote for the first black president.”)
— Should Parents Use Retirement Savings for College Tuition?  Most financial pros advise against it: You can borrow for college, but not for your retirement – CHANA R. The President will address the annual meeting of the conservative movement at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in Maryland, at 10:00 AM. CPAC is a gathering of conservative activists from all across the country who meet to learn from each other, receive training in activism and campaign management, and hear from prominent conservative leaders. The conference began in 1974, when then-Governor Ronald Reagan described his vision of America as a “city upon a hill” for the first time. To date, three Presidents have addressed CPAC. President Trump will be the fourth. President Trump has addressed CPAC several times in the past, speaking to the gathering in 2011, 2013, 2014, and 2015. Heading into the conference, President Trump has already achieved many important accomplishments in his first month in office. Whether it is jumpstarting job creation, restoring public safety, slashing harmful regulations, or keeping his promise to defend the Constitution, conservatives have much to be excited about heading into Friday’s message from the President. In addition to the President, Vice President Mike Pence will speak at the conference tonight, February 23, at 7:30 PM. Chief of Staff Reince Priebus and Chief Strategist Steve Bannon spoke to the conference this afternoon.)

http://chicago.suntimes.com/politics/channel-7s-mark-giangreco-suspended-for-anti-trump-voter-tweet/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: WLS-Channel 7 sports anchor Mark Giangreco has been suspended without pay for a tweet calling President Donald Trump a “cartoon lunatic” elected by “a country of simpletons,” according to an online report. The TV station handed Giangreco a “multi-week suspension” without pay, according to media blogger Robert Feder. “Mark Giangreco’s Twitter comments are not in line with ABC 7 Chicago’s non-partisan editorial standards. We’ve reviewed the matter and are taking the appropriate action,” the station told Feder in written statement. Giangreco appeared on the station’s 5 p.m. newscast on Thursday, after word of his suspension was reported. The sportscaster drew his bosses’ ire when he responded to a tweet from a Toronto Star sports columnist who wrote “Donald Trump: a hateful ignorant corrupt simpleton supported by 87% of Republicans.” Giangreco countered with a tweet since deleted: “So obvious, so disturbing. America exposed as a country full of simpletons who allowed this cartoon lunatic to be ‘elected.’” Giangreco is ABC 7’s “Chicago sports director and primary sports anchor/reporter for the Number One rated 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. newscasts,” according to a biography on the station’s web site. “Giangreco has earned a reputation for being a sports anchor that even non-sports fans enjoy watching, delivering sports with humor, wit and an interesting spin on the day’s sports news,” according to the bio. ” He joined the station in 1994 after a stint at WMAQ-TV. Giangreco is the brother of Pete Giangreco a leading Chicago-based Democratic political consultant whose clients have included Barack Obama, Rahm Emanuel and Tammy Duckworth.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Why did changing demographics not lead to electoral destiny for Democrats? Our report out this month provides several answers, starting with the fact that demographic change isn’t evenly dispersed. In our system of place-based government, unless millennials move to the rural South or the growing Latino population settles in equal measure across the Rust Belt, demography will take a long time. Take the U.S. House. Going into the 2016 cycle, the 159 House districts deemed safely Democratic by the nonpartisan Cook Political Report are already majority-minority. (The average is 45 percent white.) The 90 swing districts are 70 percent white — much closer to the breakdown in safe Republican districts, which number 186 and are 75 percent white on average.)
