DALLAS NEWS
— Texas’ Conaway takes over Russia meddling probe, as embattled Intel chairman steps down – Katie Leslie and Todd J. Gillman  (DIERSEN: What professional certifications and licenses do you have?  What education do you have?  What work experience do you have? My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes have always downplayed, dismissed, and belittled the fact that I passed the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979 when I was 30 years old.  They also downplay, dismiss, and belittle the fact that I became a licensed CPA in 1981, that I passed the Certified Internal Auditor examination on my first attempt in 1981, and that I became a Certified Fraud Examiner in 1990, a Certified Government Financial Manager in 1994, a Certified Financial Services Auditor in 1996, and a Forensic Accountant in 1997. They also downplay, dismiss, and belittle the fact that I earned a bachelor’s degree in management from NIU in 1970, an MBA from Loyola in 1976, a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul in 1980, and a master’s degree in financial markets and trading from IIT in 1997.  They also downplay, dismiss, and belittle the fact that I worked for GAO 1980-1997, the last 11 years of which at the GS-13 Step 1-10 levels, currently $94,610-$122,991 and that I worked for IRS 1971-1980, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels, currently $79,563-$90,173.)
https://www.dallasnews.com/news/politics/2017/04/06/texas-rep-mike-conaway-take-house-probe-russian-meddling
(FROM THE ARTICLE: “It is responsibility I take with the utmost seriousness. My profession as a CPA and auditor has taught me to be objective and methodical, and that is how I intend to help lead this investigation,” Conaway said in a written statement expressing confidence that he can conduct an “effective, bipartisan investigation” with the panel’s top Democrat, Rep. Adam Schiff of California – an outspoken critic of Nunes in recent weeks. Rep. Andre Carson, a Democrat on the Intelligence panel, called Conaway “solid.” Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson, a Dallas Democrat, said she has “great respect for Conaway so I hope he’ll do a great job. Texas Republicans had nothing but praise. “He’s smart, he’s got great integrity, he’s honest. He’ll do a great job,” said Arlington Rep. Joe Barton, a Republican. He refrained from weighing in on Nunes’ decision to step down but said, “Conaway will do it right.” Conaway is one of the few CPAs in Congress. Before his election in 2004, one of his clients was the oil firm owned by future president George W. Bush. When House Republicans needed to clean up a fund-raising scandal in 2008, they turned to Conaway. Corpus Christi Rep. Blake Farenthold, a Republican, called him “immensely qualified” and an “honorable human being….I can’t think of anybody better to do it.” Austin Rep. Roger Williams, a Republican, called him a friend who will do a “great job.”)

— Trump-supporting mayor Roger Claar appears to survive re-election scare – AP
http://wgntv.com/2017/04/04/suburban-mayor-and-trump-backer-in-tight-re-election-race/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: BOLINGBROOK, Ill.  — A longtime suburban Chicago mayor who held a fundraiser for President Donald Trump last year was holding on to a narrow lead in his re-election battle with a union organizer backed by top Democrats. With all precincts reporting late Tuesday, Bolingbrook Mayor Roger Claar held a 62-vote lead over Will County Commissioner Jackie Traynere. The county clerk’s office said vote by mail ballots postmarked by April 4 and provisional ballots remain to be counted. The vote tally will be made official April 24. Traynere spokesman Tom Bowen acknowledged because of the number of outstanding votes, Traynere is facing an “uphill battle.” “Jackie called him and congratulated him on a great race,” Bowen said. Claar did not return telephone calls seeking comment late Tuesday.)

— Some Suburban Elections Still In Question With Many Close Races – Bernie Tafoya
http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2017/04/05/some-suburban-elections-still-in-question-with-many-close-races/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Tuesday’s suburban elections saw a handful of possible upsets and several tight contests, with some races for mayor separated by only a handful of votes. In southwest suburban Bolingbrook, incumbent Mayor Roger Claar faced his strongest challenge in years, triggered by his support for President Donald Trump. Last September, Claar invited the then-presidential candidate Donald Trump to a fundraiser at the village-owned Bolingbrook Golf Club. Democratic mayoral candidate Jackie Traynere is one voter who hasn’t forgiven Claar. “We went and petitioned the Mayor with 1,100 signatures and we asked him not to invite Donald Trump here [Bolingbrook]. We didn’t feel his message of hate was in step with the community,” Traynere said. Trump’s opponent, Hillary Clinton, won 66 percent of the vote in Bolingbrook, but Claar appeared to hold on for a narrow victory on Tuesday. He led by 104 votes, according to unofficial vote totals in Will and DuPage counties, but Claar acknowledged the race likely won’t be decided for a couple weeks.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Washington Rep. Pramila Jayapal has teamed up with Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders to introduce a bill that would make four-year public college free for families making less than $125,000, and make community college free for all. The $600 billion cost would be funded by a tax on Wall Street speculation. The College for All Act would also reduce student-loan debt by cutting all student- loan interest rates for new borrowers in half; enable existing borrowers to refinance loans based on the interest rates available to new borrowers; and prevent the federal government from profiting off the student-loan program. Its sponsors say the bill would reduce student debt by allowing existing federal aid to cover other college costs, including books, housing and transportation. It would require states and tribes participating in the program to cover the full cost of college for their poorest students. It would also increase the size of work-study programs. The bill’s co-sponsors, all Democrats, include Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn., and Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass. — 5 ways millennials have it harder than their parents did when it comes to money – Beth Kobliner  (DIERSEN: Do you have a “good job?” Were the jobs that you held in the past “good?”  My critics/opponents, their operatives, and the dupes have always hinted/implied/argued/shouted that none of the jobs that I had were “good” and that they would never stoop to take them.  I did yard work and delivered newspapers 1962-1964; washed dishes 1964-1966; cleaned golf shoes, chipped slag, and pumped gasoline in 1966; delivered mail 1966-1969; worked on an automobile assemble line and as a security guard in 1970; sold tires, automotive services, and major appliances 1970-1971; pumped gasoline 1971-1972; collected delinquent taxes 1971-1980; and audited federal agencies 1980-1997.)
http://www.marketwatch.com/story/5-ways-millennials-have-it-harder-than-their-parents-did-when-it-comes-to-money-2017-04-05
(FROM THE ARTICLE: It’s harder to get a good job  In 2016, according to data from the Economic Policy Institute, the unemployment rate for college grads was 5.6%, only a tenth of a point higher than the pre-recession rate in 2007. Not too shabby. What’s a concern, though, is underemployment — a figure that includes jobless people looking for work, part-time workers who want to go full time, and unemployed people who have recently given up looking. The current underemployment rate for young college grads? 12.6%. A three-percentage-point jump from 2007. The picture is worse if you don’t have a college diploma: The underemployment rate for high school grads is 33.7%. (in 2007, it was 26.8%.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The other day, one of my sources suggested I get a job in corporate public relations. That’s where the money is, he told me. While he may be right, he’s overlooking the reason journalists do what they do. Journalists believe in finding truth, or reporting it as close as objectively possible. They also believe in holding government accountable to its citizens, among many other responsibilities. There is a gratification in being able to inform readers of something they didn’t know or news they can use in their everyday lives. Landing a position in corporate or government PR is a lot more lucrative than working at a newspaper or a TV station. It’s been that way for a long time. It’s a good job, and many of those folks are helpful in communicating to news outlets. But PR and marketing positions have drawbacks. One of them in particular is that many PR folks must toe the company line. It’s hard to get to objective truth when there’s a built-in bias. What news outlets can’t do is let government and other institutions become less accountable to the public. The official line can’t become the only line. The news release from a government agency or corporate entity shouldn’t be treated as gospel. Many newspapers are hungry for stories to fill their pages. Enterprising groups, including the conservative Illinois Policy Institute, sense that desperation. A few years ago, the institute formed the neutral-sounding Illinois News Network, which offers stories with a conservative bent to newspapers around the state. The Illinois News Network is nothing to scoff at. Recently, it hired a big player in northern Illinois’ media world as its news director — Dan McCaleb, editorial director of Shaw Media, which runs a bunch of papers in the suburbs. (Full disclosure: I worked for the institute for five months after working for a Shaw Media weekly.) Another conservative group is distributing supposedly local newspapers that favor Gov. Bruce Rauner and other Republicans. Starved Rock Country has its own version, the Illinois Valley Times. I have yet to find one writer in that paper who has burned any shoe leather anywhere near here. Many of its writers hail from the Philippines. Covering La Salle County from across the world is no substitute for reporters on the ground holding the powers that be accountable. I’ll do what I can to avoid ending up as a PR flack for corporate types. The work of a journalist is too essential.)

https://www.bloomberg.com/politics/articles/2017-04-01/gop-paid-white-house-s-priebus-almost-500-000-filing-show
(FROM THE ARTICLE: White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus received almost $500,000 from the Republican National Committee in 2016 as he led the party to wins at both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue, according to a financial disclosure form released Friday. Priebus served as chairman of the RNC from 2011 until joining the Trump administration in January. He was paid a base salary of $225,000 in 2016 plus two bonuses totaling $175,000. The party also spent just over $57,000 on rent for a Washington-area home. At the beginning of 2017, the committee paid him an additional $33,000. Appointed by President Donald Trump shortly after the election last year, Priebus has attempted to draw on his long-standing relationships with Republicans in Congress to help shape and shepherd Trump’s agenda. A fixture in Wisconsin politics for most of his adult life, Priebus worked as a litigator at Milwaukee law firm Michael Best & Friedrich LLP, where he became partner in 2006. He went on leave from the firm when he became party chairman and more formally severed ties at the end of 2016, when he received a $450,000 equity buyout. He also was paid a $50,000 bonus by the firm and had $96,408 from his capital account returned to him. Priebus also reported assets totaling at least $350,000 in an American Funds mutual fund and two bank accounts.)

To encourage Emanuel to hate me, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes would stress that I am 100% German national origin, that my ancestors have been in America since the 1840s, that I was baptized, raised, and confirmed as a Missouri Synod Lutheran, that I am conservative, that I am Republican, that I am American, that I am White, that I am a male, that I am old (68), that I am not poor, that I am a gun owner, that I am a draft avoider, that I oppose illegal/mass immigration, that oppose promotion of dependency on government and on charity, that I oppose promotion of LGBTQ activity, that I oppose promotion of abortion, that I oppose race and gender based preference giving, that I oppose age discrimination, that I oppose patronage, that I oppose political affiliation discrimination, that oppose promotion of booze, pot, gambling, and other vices, and that I oppose diminution of First and Second Amendment rights.  They would stress those Jewish people who have a very low opinion of me including former Money Magazine employees and my former superiors and supervisors in the federal government; if I had been Jewish, Money Magazine and IRS would not have disallowed my education deductions. http://www.wsiltv.com/story/35022892/no-lgbtq-category-included-in-census-proposal-for-2020-count
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The U.S. Census Bureau did not include a separate count of LGBTQ Americans in its proposal for the 2020 Census. The category had been sought by gay rights advocates. The bureau counts Americans according to race, gender and other characteristics. Its proposal submitted to Congress this week did not have a separate category for LGBTQ. The Census Bureau said it had no immediate comment. But gay rights advocates say it’s more evidence that Trump is going back on a campaign promise to protect the gay community. Last week, the Department of Health and Human Services removed questions on sexuality from two of its surveys. The Trump administration also has canceled an Obama administration directive that students should use the bathroom that matches their gender identity.)

— A taste of their own medicine – Tom Kacich  (DIERSEN: A major reason why people hate federal employees and hate retired federal employees is that federal employees and retired federal employees like me are eligible to participate in the Federal Employees Health Benefits program.  People want the federal government to screw its employees and screw its retirees just like private sector employers screw their employee and screw their retirees.)
http://www.news-gazette.com/news/local/2017-03-29/tom-kacich-taste-their-own-medicine.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: At the end of his 65-minute tele-town hall Monday night, U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis was asked whether members of Congress should get their health care coverage under the Affordable Care Act. We do, he said. And he pays more for it than he did under a previous program, with a higher deductible and a higher out-of-pocket maximum cost. “I’m part of the only group that has to, by law, has to get their benefits through the Affordable Care Act for health care,” Davis said. “I actually follow more stringent requirements than the Obama White House did. The Obama White House didn’t have to get their health benefits through the Affordable Care Act exchange like members of Congress and members of the Senate do. They were able to join millions of federal employees through the federal employee health benefit program.” Davis didn’t say it, but the reason for the disparity is that’s the way Congress wrote the law. “For a long period of time,” said Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, “it seemed to me that members of Congress needed to be subject to the laws they pass for the rest of the country.” Davis didn’t sound pleased about his enrollment under the ACA. “We don’t get any special benefits. We do have to follow the health care benefits of the Affordable Care Act where every other federal employee does not,” he said. Members of Congress are enrolled under the ACA’s gold tier plan offered by the DC Health Link. According to the Congressional Research Service, the average employer contribution — which comes from taxpayers — is 72 percent. Davis has family coverage under the ACA, and it’s more expensive, with a higher deductible, than what they had before the ACA under the Federal Employees Health Benefits program. The breakdown, as provided by Davis spokeswoman Ashley Phelps:)

CONSERVATIVE REPUBLICAN NEWS

GEORGE MASON UNIVERSITY
— APPLY NOW! Undergraduate Fall Internship with The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) – Juliann Phan  (DIERSEN: Government is nasty.  Politics is nasty.  Democrats are nasty. GAO audits IRS. My Democrat GAO superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates were furious that I only had to take an $18,847 pay cut in today’s dollars, that is, a downgrade from GS-12 Step 5 to GS-9 Step 10, or from $90,173 to $71,326 to transfer from IRS to GAO in 1980 when I was 31 years old.  All during the almost 18 years that I worked for GAO, they demonized, denigrated, and condemned what I had learned about IRS be working for IRS for almost 9 years, the last 5 1/2 years at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels, $79,563-$90,173. They rejected the fact that much of what I did for IRS was similar to what GAO employees do – interview, gather facts, summarize facts, analyze facts, make recommendations, write reports, etc.  They demonized, denigrated, and condemned the fact that before I transferred, I had passed the CPA examination on my first attempt in 1979, that I had almost completed the requirements for a master’s degree in accounting from DePaul, that I had earn an MBA from Loyola in 1976, and that I had earned a bachelor’s degree in management from NIU in 1970.)
