CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
— Mike Madigan: Democrats not involved in Ron Sandack cyber attacks – Tina Sfondeles and Chris Fusco  (DIERSEN: According to this article, Rauner said Tuesday “I heard about it yesterday morning.”  If Rauner read GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails, he would have learned about it Sunday evening at about 9:15 PM when the GOPUSA ILLINOIS Special Edition hit subscribers’ inboxes.)
http://chicago.suntimes.com/politics/madigan-democrats-not-involved-ron-sandack-cyberattacks/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: He’s known for his political brinksmanship, but House Speaker Mike Madigan said Wednesday he has no idea why Republican state Rep. Ronald L. Sandack — a top ally of Madigan’s nemesis, Gov. Bruce Rauner — abruptly resigned over the weekend. Asked Wednesday morning at a Democratic National Convention breakfast whether Democrats had any role in the cyber attacks that Sandack had cited in resigning, the Southwest Side Democrat replied “No. . . . I’ll let Sandack speak to what his problem is. I don’t know anything about it.” Sandack had been facing a challenge from Democrat Greg Hose in the November election — a race that might now be more winnable for Democrats with the much better-known Sandack off the ballot. “Again, I’d leave it up to Sandack to explain his problems,” Madigan said. Sandack issued a statement to the Capitol Fax political blog on Sunday saying that “cyber security issues” forced him to re-evaluate his “continued public service” and that he was resigning immediately. . .After declining to comment about Sandack on Monday, Rauner said Tuesday that he had no advance warning that Sandack had planned to resign. The governor’s statement only raised more intrigue about Sandack’s decision, as Sandack was one of Rauner’s most vocal advocates in the Legislature. “I really can’t comment much on Mr. Sandack’s situation,” Rauner told reporters after an event in downstate Auburn. “I heard about it yesterday morning, the same time I think most of you did. I’m not sure what all is going on there.”)

CHICAGO TRIBUNE
— Illinois Republicans move to get two Kirk opponents knocked off ballot – Rick Pearson
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-mark-kirk-libertarian-opponent-ballot-challenge-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Mindful of the adage that every vote counts, Illinois Republicans are trying to knock off the ballot two candidates seeking the U.S. Senate seat now held by first-term GOP Sen. Mark Kirk. Objections were filed this month against perennial candidate Chad Koppie of Gilberts and Eric Conklin of Le Roy. Koppie is running under the Constitution Party banner while Conklin filed as an independent. The objections were filed by Michael Bigger, the Republican state central committeeman for the 18th Congressional District and Stark County Republican chairman. He was appointed last fall by Gov. Bruce Rauner to be a member of the Illinois Human Rights Commission.)

DAILY HERALD
— DIERSEN HEADLINE: In a front page top of fold editorial unethically made to look like a news article, the Daily Herald calls for pay and benefits for Illinois legislators to be dramatically reduced.  The editorial stresses that Radogno received $129,247 in salary, stipends, health benefits, per diem and travel, and pension costs.  If the Daily Herald were to publish an editorial calling for federal pay and benefits to be dramatically cut, it might stress that 1997 in today’s dollars, GAO paid me $120,427 in salary plus benefits.)

— Glass ceiling shattered – AP  (DIERSEN: I should write a book about women in Wheaton, in Glen Ellyn, in Milton Township, in DuPage County, and in Illinois who focus on destroying me because I support the right to life and equal opportunity (no race or gender based preference giving) planks in the Republican Party platform.  These women blame me for their problems, for your problems, for my problems, and for everyone’s problems.  These women are involved in government and/or in politics to get rid of men, and especially men who are Protestant, conservative, Republican, American, White, older, rich, gun owners, and/or those whose ancestors have been in America longer than their ancestors.)
http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20160727/news/307279977/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: “We just put the biggest crack in that glass ceiling yet,” a smiling Clinton declared as she made a surprise appearance on video at night’s end, to the roar of delegates. “This is really your victory,” she said, predicting that many more women will be nominated for president — and elected. Clinton’s long political resume – secretary of state, senator, first lady – has sometimes obscured the historic nature of her candidacy. Her supporters noted that Clinton’s achievement came nearly a century after women gained the right to vote in 1920. Maryland Sen. Barbara Mikulski nominated Clinton, saying she was acting on behalf of “all women who have broken down barriers for others.” Mikulski was the first Democratic woman to be elected to the Senate in her own right.)

http://www.post-gazette.com/opinion/letters/2016/07/27/Liberals-should-practice-the-tolerance-they-preach/stories/201607270118
(FROM THE LETTER: I never realized that as a conservative Republican, Christian, white male and veteran what a horrible hate-filled racist, xenophobic, misogynist and all-around horrible person I am. Thanks to Rob Rogers’ July 21 cartoon and Oren Spiegler’s July 21 letter (“Republicans Should Regret Their Nominee Choice”), I now know that Republicans are racists, bigots and intolerant. I now realize how tolerant liberals are. I could definitely feel the love. To a liberal, compassion is when the government forcibly takes someone’s hard-earned money to give to someone else who didn’t earn it so that the government can create a culture of dependency and rob people of the joy of being self-reliant and free to determine their own future — thus stealing that person’s dignity. And that is what a liberal calls compassion? To a conservative, compassion is giving of one’s self, time, heart and money to help our fellow man. Gentlemen, please don’t pretend to know what is in my heart. I wonder if they have ever really been exposed to the disaster created by liberal government social programs. Please don’t try to clear your conscience by diminishing others who hold a different opinion and experience than yours. Practice tolerance!)

Yet watching the first night of the Democrat National Convention felt like it was 1964 all over again. While Michelle Obama declared in her speech “when they aim low, we aim high,” Democrats pulled the entire deck of ugly race cards all night long. Then like now, Democrats stoked racial division to win votes and political power in America over the last half century. The only difference was then there was a white Democrat president. In 2016, we have a black Democrat president. Listening to Sen. Cory Booker yell that it was time for Americans “to rise up,” one wouldn’t think we had elected a black leader almost eight years ago. The night’s theme was how racially divided America has become — curiously, under the first black president. Between the boos yelled by Bernie Sanders supporters, it felt like riots might erupt at any minute on the convention floor as Sen. Elizabeth Warren ranted that Donald Trump was campaigning to divide America based on race, religion and gender. “But ask yourself this. When white workers in Ohio are pitted against black workers in North Carolina, or Latino workers in Florida, who really benefits?” Warren said. Democrats benefit from identity politics, not Republicans. It’s the classic playbook that Barack Obama used. In 2008 and 2012, Obama played the race card and won with historic levels of black voter turnout. And he’s used race throughout his entire presidency as a political weapon. So there’s no surprise that according to the Washington Post, more than 6 in 10 adults say race relations in the U.S. are bad. That’s 63% compared with 48% earlier this year. It’s probably not helpful when you have the first Black president of America praising black lives and blasting blue (police officer) and white lives. But blacks who voted for Obama at rates approaching nearly 100% have been left with nothing but higher unemployment, crime and less prosperity than whites. So, it was no surprise that Michelle Obama gave a fantastic speech Monday at the DNC in Philadelphia, stoking the rage of racial division that swept her husband into office. “I wake up every morning in a house that was built by slaves. And I watch my daughters, two beautiful, intelligent, black young women, playing with their dogs on the White House lawn. And because of Hillary Clinton, my daughters — and all our sons and daughters — now take for granted that a woman can be president of the United States.” Curiously, Michelle didn’t mention that while her black daughters were on the White House lawn playing, her husband was inside plotting ways to exploit race to win battles. He blamed his inability to negotiate and cut deals with a GOP Congress on his race and rushed to defend black men killed by cops before the facts were in. In addition to making amends with Hillary in Philadelphia, Michelle should have praised her husband for being an example to her daughters and kids everywhere that blacks are truly equal. But talk of equality does drive Democrats to the polls today. White president Lyndon B. Johnson and black president Obama are both Democrats who capitalized on race to win. And to borrow from Michelle’s words, “that is the kind of president that Hillary Clinton will be.”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Merit Systems Protection Board on Tuesday announced that it is inviting federal employees and managers to begin completing the latest of its surveys on issues such as whether workers are being treated fairly, and recruitment and retention. The Web-based Merit Principles Survey will go out to 25 major agencies and departments, and 120,000 employees will be invited to complete it over the next four weeks. It is narrower in scope, smaller in sampling size and less frequent than the Office of Personnel Management’s annual Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey. Voluntary and confidential, the MSPB questionnaire focuses on merit system principles and human resources policy and practice, the MSPB said in a release. The 2016 version of the statutorily required survey will inquire about “employee engagement, fair treatment and nondiscrimination, recruitment and retention, sexual and non-sexual harassment, HR services and addressing poor performance,” the board said. MSPB asked employee unions to encourage participation. To minimize burdens, MSPB will administer three versions of the questionnaire, each focused on a portion of the larger topics. Results and subsequent recommendations will go to “the president, Congress, and other federal decision-makers to promote merit-based and effective human resources policies and practices,” the board announced. A 2013 version of the survey found that more than a quarter of federal employees believed their supervisors demonstrated favoritism.)

ABC7
— The Sandack mystery continues – Chuck Goudie, Barb Markoff and Ross Weidner
http://abc7chicago.com/politics/rep-sandack-quits-top-gop-post-over-internet-scam/1444005/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In a heavily blacked-out police report provided to the I-Team by Downers Grove police, Republican state Rep. Ronald L. Sandack made an allegation on July 14 of “an Internet scam.” Ten days later Sandack announced he was resigning from his elected position, claiming he was suffering the effects of “cyber security issues.” Neither Sandack at the time he quit, nor the suburban police report obtained Tuesday afternoon, offer any clarity as to what actually happened-or why it was serious enough to warrant resignation. Sandack has not responded to our numerous requests for information. A person who answered the front door at his home today said that the ex-legislator was at work. He is a partner at a downtown Chicago law firm and has not been available there. Sandack said in a cryptic statement on Sunday that he was forced to re-evaluate his “continued public service” due to the threat. The mostly-redacted police report does put the date of the “Internet scam” as July 7, a full week before Sandack actually reported whatever it was to police. There is no explanation why it took one week to report something serious enough to eventually cause his resignation. Oddly, Mr. Sandack was a voracious social media communicator until the cyber threat occurred-said to have been fake accounts set-up in his name (or his family members.) Currently, his Facebook and Twitter pages are down and there is no trace of whatever bogus accounts may have been established. Downers Grove police have apparently assigned at detectives to look into the allegation, according to the report. However, police officials have offered no additional details, clarity or assistance to help the public understand what may have occurred, whether there is any kind of public threat or the status of the investigation.)

http://chicago.suntimes.com/news/gop-state-rep-ron-sandack-reported-internet-scam-to-cops/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Republican state Rep. Ronald L. Sandack, a top of ally of Gov. Bruce Rauner, went to the police department in his hometown to report an “Internet scam” earlier this month — but a report about the incident reveals little about what led Sandack to abruptly resign his seat from the Illinois House over the weekend. Sandack issued a statement to the political blog Capitol Fax on Sunday saying that “cyber security issues” forced him to re-evaluate his “continued public service.” But the police report released Tuesday afternoon by the Downers Grove Police Department offers no details about what might have happened to Sandack as virtually the entire narrative is blacked out. Sandack didn’t immediately return a telephone call seeking comment. More to come on this developing story.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: DuPage GOP leaders will have the biggest say in choosing his replacement, but the Will County Republican Central Committee must be consulted because a small number of precincts in the 81st District are in that county. Krajewski said he’s scheduled to meet Saturday morning with Havel. In the meantime, he’s asking other Republicans interested in the position to send him their resume. “We’ve got to see who the candidates are,” Krajewski said. Depending on the number of applicants, a decision could come Saturday or Sunday, he said. On Monday, Krajewski said David S. Olsen is the leading candidate to replace Sandack. Olsen, 27, of Downers Grove, serves as vice chairman of the College of DuPage board of trustees, as a Downers Grove village commissioner and as vice chairman of the Downers Grove Township Republican Organization. He has expressed interest in the House seat in the past. . .If he’s chosen as Sandack’s successor, one decision Olsen needs to make is whether he will resign from the Downers Grove village council or from COD board. “That’s something that has to be discussed with my mayor, Mayor (Martin) Tully, and with (COD board) Chairman Deanne Mazzochi, and with Brian Krajewski and others,” Olsen said. “I think it’s premature to speculate on what I would do.” He said his main goal is to do “the right thing” for residents in Downers Grove, COD’s district and the 81st District.)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/zorn/ct-ron-sandack-illinois-republican-resigns-perspec-zorn-0727-jm-20160726-column.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Something doesn’t quite add up in the “official” story of why Illinois House Republican floor leader Ron Sandack abruptly resigned over the weekend. The scrappy Downers Grove pol said in a brief statement that “cybersecurity issues” prompted him to “re-evaluate” his political career and immediately step down in order to (stop me if you’ve heard this before) spend more time with his family. Reportedly, the cybersecurity issue in question was that spoofers had created fake Facebook and Twitter accounts in his name, thus threatening to damage his reputation. That’s certainly an unpleasant development if true. And the claim is plausible. Social media have yet to solve the impostor problem, as I was reminded just the other day when I got a Facebook friend request that appeared to be from another Chicago newspaper columnist with whom I was already connected. The request not only used his name but also a photo of him swiped from his real page. Online impostors don’t target just pols, pundits and other well-known figures. I routinely get Facebook friend requests from those who have either assumed others’ identities or simply invented personas, often of scantily clad women, in what seems to be a desperate and feeble attempt to peddle cheap sunglasses or other consumer goods.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Suburban Chicago GOP political leaders are looking for a replacement for a prominent state representative who abruptly resigned Sunday. Suburban Chicago State Rep. Ron Sandack (R-Dist. 81) resigned from his seat in the Illinois General Assembly on Sunday, citing a series of malicious cyber attacks in which his online profiles were cloned numerous times. Sandack said in a statement that he would work with the GOP to ensure that his replacement is elected in November. Sandack’s replacement will be appointed by DuPage County Republican Chairman Brian Krajewski, who said the resignation was very unexpected. “I hadn’t heard anything about what was transpiring, so it came as a big surprise that he was resigning immediately,” Krajewski said. Among the candidates for Sandack’s replacement, Krajewski said some names stand out, but stressed that the appointee will have to be politically electable. Two whom Krajewski mentioned are Downers Grove Commissioner David Olsen, who is likely the favorite, and Downers Grove Mayor Martin Tully. The appointed GOP representative will face Democrat Greg Hose in November. Downers Grove State Rep. Ron Sandack (R-Dist. 81) announced his immediate resignation from his seat on Sunday. The abrupt resignation comes while Sandack has been battling a malicious social media campaign. “…After some cyber security issues arose, I began to re-evaluate my continued public service,” Sandack said in a statement. “I have always recognized there is no greater privilege than being a father and husband. My duties in Springfield have meant missing a lot of events in the lives of my children. I am no longer willing to miss important family events.” House Republican Minority Leader Jim Durkin (R-Dist. 81) released a statement. “Ron Sandack is a dedicated and caring public servant,” Durkin said. “I want to thank him for his service to his constituents and the entire State of Illinois. I wish him well in his future endeavors.”)

http://www.politico.com/states/illinois/story/2016/07/durkin-on-sandack-cyber-attack-i-dont-think-it-is-politically-motivated-104169
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Illinois Republican Leader Jim Durkin said on Monday he does not believe the alleged cyber attacks that prompted GOP leader Ron Sandack’s abrupt resignation were politically motivated. In an interview Monday with POLITICO Illinois, Durkin, who is a close personal colleague and friend of Sandack, was asked whether he believed the motive was political. “I don’t think it is. I don’t believe that’s the case,” said Durkin. Asked about the possibility of an underlying scandal, he said, “I am not aware of anything else, no.” “I spoke with Rep. Sandack yesterday and he explained to me the decision he made was personal, was family-related. And I will never second-guess anyone’s decision for that reason. I wish him and his family well,” Durkin said. “Ron is not only a trusted colleague but he’s a personal friend. He leaves a void within our caucus but one that we’ll be able to in time fill. His contribution to the state and Republican Party is immeasurable, we wish him well in the next stage of his life.” On Sunday evening, Sandack said in a text that his resignation was effective Monday and that the cybersecurity issues gave him pause over his legislative life: “my family welfare is paramount.” He did not respond when asked whether that meant he feared for his family’s safety. Sandack would not talk by phone. Last week, Sandack, who was prolific on social media, took down his Facebook and Twitter accounts. His official legislative web site is still up. Sandack was the target of robocalls recently that accused him of accosting the chief legal counsel for Democrats on the House floor following a heated vote on the budget. Video at the time showed Sandack touching her arm while asking why voting was closed before a roll call was made. In 2014, Sandack was targeted by conservatives because of his vote in support of a new same-sex marriage law. Already, there’s talk of appointing Sandack’s successor and replacing him on the November ballot. One top candidate widely mentioned is David Olsen, a member of the Downers Grove City Council. Sandack leaves with nearly $130,000 in his campaign account, according to the most recent election filing.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The legislation could make it easier for protesters to be charged with a hate crime if an altercation arises between demonstrators and police, said Damon Williams of BYP100’s Chicago. The ordinance calls for up to six months in jail or fines up to $2,500 as punishment for assault, destroying the property, trespassing, vandalism, disturbing a place of workshop or telephone harassment. “They can charge people responding or people protecting themselves [with] hate crimes,” Williams said. “They have that extra power to criminalize and charge someone with a felony… We know police that the police engage with protesting in a militaristic fashion and things could escalate.”)

http://abc7chicago.com/politics/gop-state-lawmaker-ron-sandack-resigns/1441639/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: State Rep. Ron Sandack, one of Illinois’ top Republicans, has mysteriously and suddenly resigned without explanation, only saying that it’s due to “cyber-security issues.”  The I-Team has learned that there is a police investigation underway in his west suburban home district of Downers Grove. However, neither police nor Sandack are talking about the nature of the investigation. . .FBI, Illinois State Police and DuPage County officials said they are not investigating the alleged intrusion on Sandack’s accounts, but that Downers Grove police are handling the case. Police have not yet made the paperwork public, despite an open records request today by the I-Team. Sandack is a partner in a Chicago law firm and was running for re-election to the General Assembly in November. Now the Republican Party has a month to tap someone to finish his term and slate a replacement on the ballot.)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-ron-sandack-resigns-illinois-house-20160725-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A suburban Republican lawmaker known for throwing plenty of verbal jabs during the 18-month stalemate at the Capitol said Monday that he abruptly resigned because politics is getting “too ugly.” Rep. Ron Sandack, of Downers Grove, said he made his decision to step down from the Illinois House after several fraudulent social media accounts were set up in his name in recent weeks. He also cited recent automated telephone calls accusing him of accosting a Democratic staff member. “I wasn’t looking forward to an ugly general election as it were, this additional stuff added undue pressure,” said Sandack, who was up for re-election this November. “It made my family uneasy and made me re-evaluate my priorities. Politics has gotten too ugly. I don’t need it, and my family doesn’t deserve it.” Sandack would not say if he believed the social media shenanigans was politically motivated, but said he filed a report with the Downers Grove Police Department. Downers Grove police did not immediately say whether they had any police reports involving Sandack, instead suggesting the Chicago Tribune file an open-records request. The Tribune did so, but police have five days to respond. The six-year lawmaker was an outspoken defender of Gov. Bruce Rauner, serving as his House floor leader. Sandack’s desire to debate also bled into his online presence, and he frequently took to Facebook and Twitter to let his viewpoints be known. Last week, Sandack suddenly deleted his Facebook and Twitter accounts. Asked Monday if any compromising information was accessed before he deleted his social media accounts, Sandack said “no.” The former lawmaker said he is looking forward to life as a “private citizen” and will continue his work at a Chicago law firm. Late last month, Sandack appeared in a segment on Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show,” where he said Democrats are to blame for Illinois’ budget impasse. More recently, he’s been the subject of automated attack phone calls accusing him of accosting a Democratic staff member. That stems from a heated debate at the end of the spring session. House Republicans were furious when Democrats quickly adjourned after House Speaker Michael Madigan muscled through a budget bill that ultimately stalled in the Senate. Republicans asked for a double check that required each lawmaker voting for the measure to be verified as in their seat. But that didn’t happen. Incredulous, Sandack went to the front of the chamber to ask Madigan’s chief legal counsel why the verified roll call was never held and touched her on the arm. Democrats later accused Sandack of accosting her, which Sandack denied. “I did not grab her. I did get in her face and talk to her,” Sandack said at the time. Sandack first joined the legislature in 2010, when he was appointed to fill the Senate seat of Dan Cronin, who stepped down to serve as DuPage County Board chairman. Sandack moved to the House in 2013 and was up for re-election Nov. 8 against Democratic attorney Greg Hose, also of Downers Grove. Republican leaders have 30 days to name Sandack’s replacement. The Daily Herald reported Monday that a leading contender is David Olsen, a Downers Grove village commissioner and vice chairman of the Downers Grove Township Republican Organization. House Republican leader Jim Durkin said Sandack was “a dedicated and caring public servant.” “I spoke with Ron yesterday and he indicated that his decision was personal and for the benefit of his family,” Durkin told the Tribune via text message. “I respect his decision.)

— College of DuPage, Downers Grove leader Olsen front-runner to fill Sandack’s seat – Marie Wilson
http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20160725/news/160729384/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A rising star in the DuPage County Republican Party, David S. Olsen, appears to be the leading candidate to replace 81st District state Rep. Ron Sandack of Downers Grove, who has resigned his seat citing “cyber security issues.”  Olsen, 27, of Downers Grove, already serves as vice chairman of the College of DuPage board of trustees, as a Downers Grove village commissioner and as vice chairman of the Downers Grove Township Republican Organization. He has expressed interest in seeking the 81st House seat in the past and Downers Grove Township and DuPage County GOP leaders say he’s the “front-runner” to fill the remainder of Sandack’s term and likely be listed on the Nov. 8 ballot against Downers Grove Democrat Greg Hose. “Right now it sounds like David Olsen is at the top of everyone’s wish list,” said Bob Grogan, Downers Grove Township Republican Organization chairman. “He’s a well-liked young man.”  Olsen, who works as an ethics and compliance analyst for BP Corp. North America Inc., did not immediately return calls seeking comment. But Republican leaders say he likely will retain his College of DuPage seat but resign from the Downers Grove village council if he’s chosen as Sandack’s successor. “He was looking at this (state) seat in the primary a year ago,” Brian Krajewski, DuPage County Republican chairman, said. The 81st District includes all or parts of Darien, Downers Grove, Lisle, Naperville, Westmont and Woodridge in DuPage and Will counties. “Clearly he’s performed tremendously in his role as commissioner in Downers Grove, was elevated to mayor pro tem and was recently tapped to help clean up the mess at COD,” Krajewski said. Olsen was appointed to the College of DuPage board in February to replace former Chairwoman Kathy Hamilton, who resigned in December. His selection — which was supported by Gov. Bruce Rauner — was significant because it broke a 3-3 tie among trustees that plagued the college and stalled business for months following Hamilton’s unexpected departure. COD board Chairwoman Deanne Mazzochi did not immediately return calls seeking comment. Krajewski said Olsen likely will remain on the college panel until the spring election to prevent another stalemate. Olsen already has said he does not intend to seek a full term on the COD board in the spring election. “He helps bring people together,” Krajewski said. “I know his intentions there were never to rerun in April anyway for that position.” Olsen — or whoever is picked to run in Sandack’s place in the Nov. 8 election — will need time to devote to running a campaign, Krajewski and Grogan said. That campaign would pit the chosen candidate against Hose, an attorney and Downers Grove village commissioner who is the Democrat seeking the 81st seat. With his opponent unknown, Hose said he’ll keep his focus on the issues — largely the state’s unpaid bills, economic issues and rising property taxes. “I think that’s the best way to do it. This race doesn’t need to be about personality,” Hose said. “I’m just going to keep focusing on what’s important to the people of the 81st District and making the world a little better for my children and everyone else’s children.” Officials expect the decision on Sandack’s replacement will be made relatively quickly. The Republican party has 30 days from Sandack’s resignation effective Monday to fill his seat and officials have until Aug. 25 to fill the vacancy on the November ballot. Krajewski said the person chosen by DuPage Republican leaders will get the seat and the ballot slot, but the Will County Republican Central Committee also will have a say because a small number of precincts in the 81st District are within Will County’s borders. Will County Republican Chairwoman Kathy Havel did not immediately return a call seeking comment.)
— Republican leader Jim Durkin: Ron Sandack will be missed – Mike Riopell
http://www.dailyherald.com/article/20160725/news/160729391/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Illinois House Republican leader said Monday that Ron Sandack, the suburban lawmaker who resigned abruptly citing “cyber security issues,” will be missed. The sudden resignation of former state Rep. Sandack, a Downers Grove Republican, became effective Monday, according to a letter received by the Illinois Secretary of State’s office and other leaders. “Ron Sandack is a dedicated and caring public servant. I want to thank him for his service to his constituents and the entire State of Illinois,” House Republican Leader Jim Durkin of Western Springs said in a statement. “I wish him well in his future endeavors,” “I spoke with Ron yesterday afternoon and respect his decision to resign,” a separate message to lawmakers said. “I am grateful for the work he has done collectively on behalf of our caucus and for his constituents. He will be missed.” Sandack had become a vocal supporter of Gov. Bruce Rauner and a key member of the House Republicans, acting as a floor leader at the Capitol during hours of legislative debates. “It has been a tremendous honor and privilege to serve the people of the 81st district for the past four years in Springfield,” Sandack said in a statement over the weekend. “But after some cyber security issues arose, I began to re-evaluate my continued public service.” Sandack, a second-term member of the Illinois House, hasn’t responded to requests for comment and hasn’t elaborated further. “I have always recognized there is no greater privilege than being a father and husband,” his statement said. “My duties in Springfield has meant missing a lot of events in the lives of my children. I am no longer willing to miss important family events.” His resignation was a particular surprise because his profile has risen quickly among Illinois Republicans, becoming a prominent member of Durkin’s team in Springfield. His prolific tweeting raised his profile, too, so the disappearance of his Twitter accounts last week were a cause for questions that led to his resignation announcement over the weekend. Last month, he appeared on a segment of the Daily Show about the Illinois budget war. “Ron Sandack is an integral part of our leadership team,” said state Rep. Ed Sullivan, a Mundelein Republican. Sullivan decided not to run for re-election, at least partly because of actions of protesters at his home, and said Sandack made a personal decision to leave the House. Local Republican officials will get to pick Sandack’s replacement in the coming days.)

But it went for Obama twice, by nearly 11 percentage points in 2008 and by 1.1 percentage points in 2012. . .In recent decades Americans have increasingly sorted themselves politically. INVESTORS BUSINESS DAILY
— 7 Expenses That Will Fall Once You Retire – PAUL KATZEFF  (DIERSEN: My Civil Service Retirement System pension is dramatically reduced because my Democrat superiors in the federal government succeeded in wasting my career and forcing me to retire in 1997 when I was 49 years old.)
http://www.investors.com/etfs-and-funds/retirement/7-expenses-that-will-fall-once-you-retire/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Are you worried about being able to afford the retirement lifestyle you want? Well, you can relax a little bit. That’s because your spending is likely to fall once you retire. In fact, odds are it will decline in a whopping 7 of 8 key categories, according to the latest data from the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO). That means you will probably need less money than you thought. That should make your overall retirement planning a little easier. The less you need, the easier it is to reach that goal. After retirement, the average 65- to 79-year-old’s household spending falls to $41,904 a year. That’s just 77% of what it was before retirement from age 50 to age 64: $54,356. Even if your income and spending are much higher than the average household’s, you should expect your spending to shift into a lower gear once you retire. The 25% of Americans who are the most affluent — their annual income range starts at about $102,000 and goes into the millions — spend about $104,000 a year on average from age 50 to 54, their peak consumption years. But by ages 65 to 69, their annual spending falls to about $82,000. Already making do with less, low-income households tend to see a smaller decline in spending after retirement. For the average retiree household, the biggest decline in spending is for insurance and pensions. Spending in this category for the average 65- to 79-year-old retiree household plunges to just 40% of what it was pre-retirement from ages 50 to 64. That category includes contributions to retirement accounts and pensions. The decline makes perfect sense since retirees are far more likely to be taking withdrawals from retirement accounts than stuffing money into them. The only category where spending increases is health care. Spending averages $3,935 a year for pre-retirees. It climbs to 126% of that, $4,959, for 65- to 79-year-old retiree households. The other six categories where average annual spending declines are housing, transportation, food, entertainment, apparel and “other,” which includes spending for things like reading, tobacco, alcoholic beverages, education and personal care.)

POLITICO
— Sandack’s bombshell resignation – Natasha Korecki
http://www.politico.com/tipsheets/illinois-playbook/2016/07/sandacks-bombshell-resignation-kirk-clinton-up-in-illinois-poll-gutierrez-among-tonights-dnc-speakers-215498
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The abrupt resignation of state Rep. Ron Sandack — an outspoken member of the legislature who was Gov. Bruce Rauner’s reliable attack dog on the House floor — was stirring all kinds of talk late Sunday. As Republican floor leader, Sandack was the governor’s point person in the House, arguing strenuously for the governor’s office (and generally against Democratic Speaker Mike Madigan) on individual bills. Sandack resigned on Sunday following what he described as a series of cyberattacks on his Twitter and Facebook accounts, which involved the creation of new accounts under the guise of his own persona.  “I have always recognized there is no greater privilege than being a father and husband. My duties in Springfield [have] meant missing a lot of events in the lives of my children. I am no longer willing to miss important family events.” Story and Sandack’s full statement here: http://www.politico.com/states/illinois/story/2016/07/top-house-republican-abruptly-resigns-citing-cybersecurity-104157  In a text to Politico Illinois last night, Sandack said his resignation was effective Monday and that the cybersecurity issues gave him pause over his legislative life: “my family welfare is paramount.” He did not respond when asked whether that meant he feared for his family’s safety. Sandack would not talk by phone. SO … why are so many people having trouble believing him? Here’s a few reasons we want to hear more (anything?) from Republican leaders today: 1. Something seems off with the equation. (High-profile statehouse Republican) + (close to most powerful Republicans in state) + (social media accounts hacked into) = immediately resigns? 2. Crickets. The governor, Illinois House Republicans, others in leadership, said a big nada on Sunday at the news of the loss of a top lieutenant. No statements released by leaders. No response from a governor’s spokeswoman when asked for reaction late Sunday. No answer from several Republican party and legislative leaders (with the exception of House Republican forwarding a copy of Sandack’s statement.) That won’t hold today though. 3. Timing. Sandack took down his own social media accounts last week, which prompted all kinds of speculation. He said on Sunday the cyber hacking/harassment started around July 4. He resigned days after taking down his accounts. Days earlier, the Illinois House Victory Fund had spent $10,300 in printing costs for his campaign. http://www.elections.il.gov/CampaignDisclosure/ItemizedExpend.aspx?FiledDocID=615133&ExpenditureType=Expenditures&Archived=True&OrderBy=LastorOnlyName-AtoZ&ItemizedExpendFrom=D2Quarterly.aspx  4. Sandack has long been an outspoken, incredibly accessible guy — except on the day he resigned. Instead, his announcement was carefully crafted. It was first made available in a relatively safe venue — the Capitol Fax newsletter. The writeup (which is password protected or we’d include a link) describes Sandack working to take down two fake accounts on Twitter and 10 on Facebook, which purported to behave as Sandack accounts. In the midst of this, Sandack says he experiences a moment of clarity, realizing he doesn’t want to miss any more of his kids’ events. What was missing from the CapFax piece was any description as to what actually happened on these fake accounts. Had they actually posted content pretending to be Sandack? Were they threatening? Embarrassing? The piece said Sandack filed a police report. Beside Sandack, the other person quoted in the CapFax writeup was a recent Rauner appointee, John Bambenek, who talked about how unusual and dangerous it was to have such an open attack against a public official. He also talked about the difficulty of prosecuting computer crimes. (Incidentally, on Sunday, Bambanek on Twitter said this about a higher-profile cyber incident: https://twitter.com/bambenek/status/757321987618328576) Sandack appeared on the Daily Show on a segment about Illinois’ pitiful budget woes. Watch: http://www.cc.com/video-clips/7dahxe/the-daily-show-with-trevor-noah-jordan-klepper-s-happy-endings—illinois-s-budget-impasse Sandack leaves with nearly $130,000 in his campaign account, according to the most recent election filing. He was up for reelection in November. Last night, state Rep. Tom Demmer said of Sandack on Twitter: “An excellent legislator and a great guy. We’ll miss him in the House.” Gov. Rauner is in Chicago today, and will no doubt be asked to weigh in on this one.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Residents received the Illinois Valley Times in their mailboxes this week. Despite its local name, the new publication has no presence here. Its parent organization, which is largely funded by Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner, is based in Chicago. One of its writers lives in New York. The newspaper includes no mailing address or phone number and gives readers no information about who runs it, though it provides an email address and Twitter account. . .As the story goes on to report, this is one of Dan Proft’s newspapers published by Liberty Principles PAC. And then there’s this story… The Illinois Press Association isn’t sure it really is a newspaper — they think it might be a political advertisement and are interested in finding out who’s behind it. Don Craven, general counsel for the Illinois Press Association, said throughout the campaign season he was alerted to a series of publications crafted to look like newspapers. These would seem to have all come from the same source: The website for the Illinois Valley Times includes links to 13 sister publications such as “Rock Island Today” and the “Sangamon Sun.”)

(FROM THE POSTING: Postscript – Needless to say, the response to the letter has been stunning and overwhelming. I want to express my gratitude to the people who have shared so many kind thoughts. It was my intention to reply to each of the emails I’ve received, but I was snowed under by late last night and they keep piling up. Some of the warmest regards have come from right here in suburban Chicago. When I posted this letter I was prepared to face some anger here at home from fellow Republicans. Nothing of the kind has materialized. The only official response from the local GOP so far has been support, for which I am immensely grateful. It gives me hope. We may all come out of this debacle in better condition.)

http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20160723/ISSUE01/307239992/trumps-running-mate-has-a-business-success-story-of-his-own-to-tell
(FROM THE ARTICLE: You’re likely to hear plenty about the Indiana economy between now and November. Right after his religious faith and his fondness for Ronald Reagan, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence’s go-to talking point is his economic record. “This economy is nowhere near the best we can do,” he said at the Republican National Convention, where he was introduced as GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump’s running mate. “It’s just the best they can do. In Indiana, we prove every day you can build a growing economy on balanced budgets and low taxes. Indiana is a state that works.” While it’s not quite the Hoosier Miracle, Pence has some things to crow about. Since he took office in 2013, Indiana has the best job growth at 9.9 percent among its Midwestern neighbors Michigan (8.6 percent), Wisconsin (4.9 percent), Ohio (4.5 percent) and Illinois (4 percent). Nationally, job growth was 6.7 percent during that time, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data. Indiana’s unemployment rate is in the middle of the pack at 5 percent, compared with 4.2 percent in Wisconsin and 6.4 percent in Illinois. The question, however, is how much credit can Pence claim.)

CATHOLIC CULTURE

https://www.catholicculture.org/news/headlines/index.cfm?storyid=28837
(FROM THE ARTICLE: American Catholic voters lean strongly toward Hillary Clinton in this year’s presidential contest, according to a new Pew Forum survey. The Pew poll found that Clinton held a 56-39% advantage over Donald Trump among Catholic voters. That 17% margin was markedly different from the results of a similar poll in the last presidential race, when then-Senator Barack Obama was virtually even with Mitt Romney among Catholic voters in June 2012. However, Clinton’s margin among Catholic voters was entirely attributable to a huge (77-16%) advantage among Hispanic Catholics. Among white Catholics, Trump had a slight (50-46) edge. Among all voters surveyed, Pew found that Clinton had a 51-42% lead. Trump enjoyed his best results among white Evangelical voters, who gave him a massive 78-17% advantage; Clinton did best with black Protestants, who broke even more dramatically (89-8%) in her favor. Among voters who attend church services weekly, Pew found that Trump had a slight advantage: 49- 45%. But among Catholics who attend Mass weekly, Clinton led by 57-38%. When asked which questions they considered most important in the presidential campaign, Catholics provided answers that did not differ significantly from the overall national sample.)

WBEZ
— JULY 22, 2016 FLASHBACK: Illinois Republicans Leave RNC Split On Trump’s Speech – Tony Arnold  (DIERSEN: From what I see, Pat Brady has led, is leading, and will continue to lead the anti-Trumps in Illinois.  Therefore, if you have supported Brady, if you are supporting Brady, and/or if you continue to support Brady, YOU SHOUT THAT YOU ARE ANTI-TRUMP.  Anti-Trumps are anti-Protestant, anti-conservative, anti-Republican, anti-American, anti-White, anti-male, anti-older people, anti-rich people, anti-gun owners, and/or anti-those whose ancestors have been in America longer than their ancestors.  Anti-Trumps appointed Brady to serve on the Illinois Republican Party State Convention Platform and Resolutions Committee instead of me.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Illinois Republicans are leaving their party’s national convention split on the candidacy of Donald Trump. John Anthony is a former state representative and a former police officer. “I think I have become a fan of Donald Trump,” Anthony said Friday morning. Anthony advocated for Florida Sen. Marco Rubio during the primary, and didn’t think very highly of Trump before Thursday night’s speech. Anthony says he prefers candidates who are more laid back. But Trump’s comments in favor of police officers changed Anthony’s mind about the Republican presidential nominee. “So many of my boys, my brothers and sisters in blue, are depressed at this time. Most of them don’t want to do the job because they’re afraid of the consequence,” Anthony said. But former state GOP chairman Pat Brady checked out of his Cleveland hotel early, skipping Trump’s speech altogether. Brady was a delegate for Ohio Gov. John Kasich. Walking through the hotel lobby with his shoelaces untied and a toothbrush hanging out of his mouth, Brady said his suitcase was more organized than the Trump campaign.)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/suburbs/naperville-sun/ct-nvs-naperville-crooks-police-st-0724-20160722-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The leader of Naperville’s police union is disputing a statement by the author of an essay about growing up black in Naperville that he was pulled over dozens of times between 2001 and 2007, saying department records show the former resident was stopped only a handful of times by the city’s police force. Mike Caruso, a Naperville police detective and president of Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 42 in Naperville, said his department took it personally. “Our members are not happy,” Caruso said. “The way that our department took it was as a shot at the Naperville Police Department.” Brian Crooks, whose Facebook essay went viral after it was shared thousands of times, on Friday stood by the original estimate and said he did not attribute all of the stops to Naperville police. Crooks also wondered if all stops, from Naperville police or other law enforcement, were properly documented. Excerpts of the essay appeared in the Naperville Sun this past week. “I don’t know what department they came from,” said Crooks, who did not single out a specific law enforcement agency in his essay or in later interviews with the Naperville Sun. “It wasn’t my intent to say Naperville Police Department has this problem.” Naperville police Chief Robert Marshall said his offer to have coffee with Crooks remains open when the former Naperville resident is back in town. He did not dispute Crooks’ allegations, and said he looks forward to talking with him more. He described Crooks as “very gracious” during their phone conversation last week.)

(FROM THE LETTER: Hats off to DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin for bringing out a program for first time nonviolent offenders that can lead to their charges being dismissed and their record expunged. The requirement for entry, joining the military, could be the answer for those that have lost their direction and need the discipline the military could provide to get on course. It is gratifying knowing that this opportunity is now there for those wanting to straighten out their lives, who need a helping hand, not the start of a criminal record that could lead to missed opportunities and a life of crime.)

— Lawsuit Continues in Naperville Township
http://www.nctv17.com/lawsuit-continues-in-naperville-township/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Naperville Township highway commissioner is not letting go of his lawsuit.  Stan Wojtasiak is appealing the judge’s ruling that the township board was justified in reducing his budget by more than 20 percent in May. The cut they made was about $544,000. That’s the same sum which the city of Naperville said the township would save if they entered into a consolidation deal for the maintenance of the township’s roads: a move Wojtasiak opposed. DuPage County Judge Bonnie Wheaton determined that the board had the final say in setting the budget for road district costs. The lawsuit seeks to restore the road district’s budget to Wojtasiak’s original ask of about $2.6 million. The Illinois Second District Appellate Court in Elgin will hear the case.)

http://www.nytimes.com/2016/07/23/us/a-colorado-town-tests-positive-for-marijuana-in-its-water.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: There are no marijuana dispensaries or greenhouses in the tiny railroad town of Hugo, where Theodore Roosevelt once ate breakfast with the local cowboys. But this week, Hugo’s 740 residents were told to stop drinking the water after the town’s water supply tested positive for THC, the psychoactive chemical in Colorado’s most famous cash crop. The trouble started when a local company trying to calibrate its employee drug tests pulled a positive reading from Hugo’s tap water. The town’s Public Works Department investigated and found signs of tampering and “forced entry” at one of the wells that supply the town’s drinking water, a spokesman for the Lincoln County sheriff told reporters. The town sealed off the well that seemed to be the source of the tainted water. No one has reported feeling sick or intoxicated from drinking the water, though people around the high-plains town joked on Friday that perhaps they should be drinking more water. On the town’s Facebook community page, Hugo Happenings, people joked about Hugo’s new “healing waters,” and said that its ice cubes could be the tiny town’s answer to marijuana brownies.)

Just over 13 percent were undecided.)

http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2016/07/21/kirk-calls-for-debate-in-spanish-with-challenger-duckworth/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Like most of Illinois’ prominent Republicans, U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk is not at the Republican National Convention.  He’s proposing a series of bilingual debates against Democratic Challenger Tammy Duckworth. Kirk tells CBS2 Special Correspondent Jay Levine that aside from a few physical limitations, he’s fully recovered from the stroke which nearly took his life four years ago. The first-term senator still uses a wheelchair most of the time, but mentally, he says he’s fully recovered. He says he could handle debates. “In fact, I have asked Tammy Duckworth to debate me en espanol,” says Kirk, who is up for other debates, and in English. Kirk has said he won’t endorse his party’s controversial presidential nominee, Donald Trump. He says he’ll write in retired Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Colin Powell, and urge others to do the same. “I don’t think Donald Trump would make a good commander-in-chief, he’s too emotional,” Kirk says of Trump. In many ways, and on many issues, Kirk seems closer to Democrats than Republicans. “I am a moderate, pro-choice pro-gay rights guy who wants to spend less and tax less,” Kirk says. He says he also bucks his party where the NRA is concerned. Levine asked Kirk about a series of controversial statements he has made in recent memory. That includes a reference last year to Chicago’s South Side, when he referred to an unmarried colleague as a “bro with no ho.” “When you’re in a race like I’m in, everything is taken the wrong way,” Kirk says. But then he almost immediately let fly another headscratcher about the therapeutic benefits of pinot grigio. He says the wine has helped him talk more clearly. “Suddenly, as the pinot grigio hit the brain stem, my speech abilities came back. And I said to my girlfriend, ‘OK, it’s going to be only pignot grigio.’”  Kirk has waged a long, hard battle to recover from that life-threatening stroke. Now, he’s fighting for his political life, for a U.S. Senate seat Democrats feel may be their best chance to take that chamber from the GOP.)

WBEZ
— Illinois GOP Chairman Tim Schneider Urges Trump Supporters To Get Involved – Tony Arnold  (DIERSEN: QUESTION: If/when Schneider is asked what should Illinois Republicans do to keep up to date with news and commentary of interest to Illinois Republicans, how should he respond? ANSWER: Not only read GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails every morning and every evening at
www.gopillinois.com, but subscribe at that website to get those emails each and every morning and evening.  GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails are free of charge and they contain no advertising.  The Illinois Republican Party (IRP) would love to put out emails like GOPUSA Illinois Editor Dave Diersen does, but the IRP could never afford to pay the millions of dollars each year that would cost.)
https://www.wbez.org/shows/wbez-news/illinois-gop-chairman-urges-trump-supporters-to-get-involved/63425fd9-bd8a-4c80-a0b3-6b3610b3a8a5
(FROM THE ARTICLE: With some Illinois Donald Trump supporters at odds with the state’s Republican party, Illinois GOP Chairman Tim Schneider asked Trump supporters to get involved in races beside the presidential campaign when they return from Cleveland. Schneider said the state GOP organization has more tools to help elect Trump – and other Republican candidates – than political newcomers, who haven’t been involved in the party, can do alone. One way in particular Schneider said the state party can help candidates, is through personal data collection on voters. “We know more about you, I hate to say it, than you think,” Schneider said Thursday morning at the final breakfast meeting of the Illinois Republican delegation. “I mean, we know so much about you because of the data that we’re getting. I can tell you that we get the information from your credit cards and where you buy – what cable TV stations that you watch.” Schneider said all that information helps the Republican Party advertise to swing voters, instead of just the voters who are likely to mark ballots for the GOP regardless of advertisements. He said if Trump supporters want to help their candidate in a bigger way, they should get more involved in the established Republican Party because it already has a way to target specific voters for campaign literature. This comes as earlier in the week, Schneider introduced himself – and the state Republican Party – as the friend – not the enemy – of Trump supporters wary of party leaders who oppose Trump for president. “You all need the Illinois Republican Party,” Schneider said to the political newcomers who make up a lot of the Illinois Republican delegation at national convention. “We need you and you need us. You need us because we are the framework. We’re the grassroots. We’re the get-out-the-vote program. We’re the phone banks. We’re the data.” Schneider credited Bruce Rauner’s 2014 campaign for governor, in which Rauner contributed millions of dollars from his own bank account, for helping build the state GOP’s database on voters. Schneider says Republicans are targeting 22 state legislative districts currently held by Democrats around Illinois that he thinks can flip to Republican this November. Schneider says this election could help take away the Democratic supermajorities in the state House and Senate – if more political newcomers like the Trump delegates get involved.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: With one day left in the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, some members of the Illinois delegation in Cleveland are already sure this week has been one of the best of their lives. They say the RNC has been energizing and inspiring, but also very expensive. Many of them have tried to find ways to cut costs, and some of those tactics are more intimate than others.)

CRAIN’S CHICAGO BUSINESS
— CTA, Metra are unworthy ‘social engineering,’ GOP says – GREG HINZ  (DIERSEN: While I worked for IRS for almost 9 years and for GAO for almost 18 years, my Democrat superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates were overwhelmingly anti-automobile.  They viewed automobiles a) as being things that people use to escape Democrat-run cities and/or b) as things that were made by overpaid UAW members.)
http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20160721/BLOGS02/160729936/cta-metra-are-unworthy-social-engineering-gop-says
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Did you realize that, when you took Metra, Pace or the Chicago Transit Authority to work or school today, you were engaged in “social engineering?” Well, you were, according to a section of the 2016 Republican Platform that was adopted this week and on which Donald Trump and Mike Pence will now run. And it’s time for such “government transit” to get its hands off of the U.S. Highway Trust Fund, the GOP says. Under current law, proceeds from the federal 18.4 cents a gallon tax on gasoline are split between roads and transit, with the latter usually getting about a fifth of the total. The fund has come perilously close to running short in recent years, in part because people are driving less but the per-gallon tax has remained frozen for many years. Faced with that, GOP House lawmakers a few years ago moved to switch the entire amount to roads, something that would have forced transit to battle it out for every other demand for federal general funds. That got squelched when a handful of GOP congressmen from urban areas, including Chicago, revolted. But the idea has never quite died among GOP conservatives, mostly from rural and suburban districts. the 2012 party platform called for an end to the diversion, but left it at that. . .The new version goes considerably further.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Republicans from across the country gathered in Cleveland this week to nominate Donald Trump as their presidential candidate, and while there was some discord in the party ranks, the GOP was united in its desire to cut the size and scope of government. The speakers articulated few specifics of a government management agenda, but did not shy away from criticizing the Obama administration for expanding the roles of agencies and their regulatory reach. In his acceptance speech Thursday, Republican nominee Donald Trump to vowed “no tolerance for government incompetence.” He spent much of his speech discussing national security and government’s role in protecting it. “The most basic duty of government is to defend the lives of its own citizens,” Trump said. “Any government that fails to do so is a government unworthy to lead.” Trump promised to cut waste across government on an expedited timeframe. “We are going to ask every department head in government to provide a list of wasteful spending projects that we can eliminate in my first 100 days,” Trump said. “The politicians have talked about it; I’m going to do it.”)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-illinois-republican-national-convention-unity-met-0722-20160721-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Illinois Republican national committeeman Richard Porter stood before the state’s delegation at breakfast Thursday and proclaimed that the booing of Texas Sen. Ted Cruz for refusing to endorse presidential nominee Donald Trump was a display of unity. As Porter described the chaotic convention hall scene as “fun,” Jim Fisher bolted from the hotel ballroom. “He was saying booing Ted Cruz brings us together,” said an angry Fisher, a Cruz delegate from Hudson in central Illinois. The scene was one more example of the depth of the fissures that exist in Illinois — and among Republicans nationally — as the state’s delegation prepares to head home with Trump, the controversial businessman and former reality TV star, atop its November ticket. In a week of national convention gaffes, Illinois Republicans kicked out a Trump delegate for posting racist statements on social media, saw Gov. Bruce Rauner and U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk skip the event, and witnessed a Trump alternate delegate loudly opposing U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger’s plea to back Kirk for a second term. Support Kirk “as opposed to Tammy Duckworth?” asked Suzanne Amato of Wood Dale. “They’re basically one and the same. It’s ridiculous to me. We have to keep Mark Kirk in because he’s a true Republican? … He’s not a true Republican.” Ultimately, Republicans still on the fence over backing their presidential nominee are increasingly trying to rationalize supporting Trump in the context that voters face a “binary choice” between him and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who accepts the Democratic nomination in Philadelphia next week.)

CHICAGO READER
— Before he was at Fox, Roger Ailes ran a nasty Senate campaign in Illinois – Michael Miner  (DIERSEN: Lynn Martin lived in my precinct for a while.)
http://www.chicagoreader.com/Bleader/archives/2016/07/21/before-he-was-at-fox-roger-ailes-ran-a-nasty-senate-campaign-in-illinois
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In 1988 Roger Ailes fashioned the media strategy for George H.W. Bush’s successful campaign for president, and in 1996 he became the first CEO of Fox News. Between these two historic events, he came to Illinois. His fingerprints were all over a nasty 1990 Senate race between two by-no-means-nasty people: Democratic incumbent Paul Simon and his Republican challenger, Lynn Martin, a moderate congresswoman from Rockford. Ailes thought Simon, who won by a whisker in 1984, was vulnerable: arguably too liberal for the state, and after making a run for the Democratic nomination for president in 1988, perhaps not sufficiently committed to the job, in the minds of Illinois voters.  So Ailes rode into town to see to it Illinois sent Martin to Washington.)

— What You Like Falls on Party Lines  Facebook ‘likes’ illustrate the personal differences between Republicans and Democrats – Natalie Andrews and Brian McGill
http://graphics.wsj.com/elections/2016/facebook-likes/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Republicans and Democrats divide on policy positions, and the ideological divisions can extend to taste in music, movies and books. An analysis of what people who “like” the presidential candidates on Facebook “like” elsewhere shows interesting ways the partisan divide can go beyond the issues. To “like” something on Facebook, a user has to deliberately click the button. Presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump has 9.1 million “likes” on Facebook, which has 201 million monthly active users in the U.S. Presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton has 4.3 million. To determine the data set used below, Facebook took that audience, removed people that liked both pages and looked at what other items the people had liked on Facebook. Below, a state-by-state look at what people who “like” the presidential candidates or members of their respective parties also “like” on Facebook.)
