Tillman not only supports children’s charities through his Charles Tillman Cornerstone Foundation, he also long has been active in military endeavors. In 2010, he spent eight days on a USO tour visit with troops in Iraq and Kuwait. He was selected as the winner of the NFL’s Salute to Service award in 2012. Tillman received the largest contract paid to a cornerback in Bears history when he signed a six-year, $40.55 million extension in 2007. That deal expired in 2013 and he re-signed for $3.25 million in 2014 before his final season with the Panthers, when he reunited with coach Ron Rivera on a one-year, $3.05 million deal.)

CAPITOL FAX
— STATEMENT FROM BURT MINOR, Candidate, 42nd House District
https://capitolfax.com/2018/02/22/gop-township-chairman-alleged-to-have-directed-racist-homophobic-remarks-at-black-female-gop-candidate/
(THE STATEMENT: Last October, I met with Erika Harold in my capacity as Winfield Township Republican Chairman, at her request, to discuss the challenges she might face in her campaign for the Republican nomination for Attorney General. Our meeting has been greatly misrepresented. Not all Republican voters are comfortable discussing issues of race and sexual orientation. I wish it were different, but it is a reality those of us active in the Republican Party’s leadership confront, not infrequently. My discussion with Erika was an attempt to point out this unfortunate reality, it was in no way meant to be offensive. I honestly left our meeting unaware that our conversation might have made Erika uncomfortable. My apologies to Erika if she was in any way offended. Erika is a great candidate who has a bright future in the Republican Party. Throughout my 23 years in the military, I worked alongside people of all faiths, ethnicities and backgrounds. We worked together to get the job done, and that is the way it should be. Period. Ironically, at the 2016 Illinois Republican State Convention I was vilified for defending fellow Republicans who were advocating for a more inclusive and tolerant Illinois Republican Party Platform. I was also upset with Gubernatorial candidate Jeanne Ives recent television advertisement. Interestingly, many of the individuals criticizing me over this misunderstanding remain silent about that disgustingly provocative television ad. The hypocrisy is stunning. Peter Breen and Kevin Fitzpatrick, who are attempting to capitalize on this misunderstanding for the benefit of one of my opponents, tried to bribe me months ago with the offer of a government job if I were to get out of this race. They told me that they wanted another candidate to win because Peter Breen would be able to control her. When I declined the offer, they said they would support my daughter if she were ever to run for higher office. This morning, when Peter sent his letter to the media he attempted to follow through on a promise to destroy my reputation. I completely understand the fierce reaction this misunderstanding has generated, but I wish those who rushed to judgment would have gotten all the facts first. I intend to discuss those facts and the many issues of importance to the residents of Illinois’ 42nd District in the days leading up to Election Day. So there is no further misunderstanding, let me be clear, I believe there is no place for racism or intolerance in the Republican Party and the State of Illinois.)

POLITICO ILLINOIS
— Illinois GOP contender Burt Minor called AG candidate racial, gay slurs, colleagues say – NATASHA KORECKI
https://www.politico.com/story/2018/02/22/illinois-republican-attorney-general-candidate-racial-slur-421732
(FROM THE ARTICLE: A Republican candidate for the Illinois state Legislature is under fire by his own party amid allegations that he asked an African American attorney general candidate if she were a “lesbo,” and used the N-word during a conversation with her. Now, Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner and Illinois’ Republican House floor leader, Peter Breen, are calling for the candidate, Burt Minor, to drop out of a race for state representative. “He’s not fit to be a Republican nominee for office, especially not the General Assembly,” Breen told POLITICO. “His conduct was outrageous.” At issue is a conversation that took place last fall between Minor and Republican attorney general candidate Erika Harold. Harold, the party-backed candidate for the GOP, who is also a Harvard Law graduate and former Miss America, was talking to Minor in his capacity as a Winfield Township chairman. “[Minor] asked Ms. Harold personal questions about her marital status, and even her sexual orientation, going so far as to inquire whether she was a ‘lesbo,’ Breen wrote in a letter to other Republicans this morning. “The chairman also used the full n-word repeatedly in front of Ms. Harold and her assistant, asking whether she found its usage offensive.” Breen told POLITICO that in a meeting with Minor, he admitted to using the N-word and had “tried to explain it away, saying that she wanted him to ask the question so she could get it on the record, which is obviously absurd.” The Harold campaign confirmed to POLITICO that the conversation did occur. According to the campaign, Minor asked Harold: “Are you a lesbo?” and she replied: “No, and that’s offensive.” The campaign also confirmed he used the N-word multiple times and she told him that was offensive. “Erika found it offensive and said it was offensive at the time,” her spokesman Jason Heffley said. Minor is running for the 42nd District state representative seat that is being vacated by Jeanne Ives, who is challenging Rauner in the March 20 primary. Also running in the primary is DuPage County Board member Amy Grant and Ryne Byrne. Minor did not respond to a request for comment from POLITICO today. But in a recent interview with POLITICO, Minor adamantly denied using the word “lesbo” or the N-word. “Absolutely not. No, no. I talked with Erika last night, in fact. We’re friends, we support and respect each other,” he told POLITICO. “There was never any inappropriate [conversation]. That word never came out of my mouth and it wouldn’t.” Another lawmaker, state Rep. Mark Batinick, said he was pushing for Minor’s removal from the ticket. “A few weeks ago, I became aware of very troubling statements made by township chairman Burt Minor who is a Republican State Representative candidate. I have since had those statements confirmed by multiple sources and have been working with party officials in an attempt to remove him from the race. It is my understanding that those attempts have been futile. This sort of conduct does not belong in our party and will not be tolerated. He needs to immediately withdraw,” Batinick said. Rauner’s campaign said Thursday that Minor should drop out. “Erika Harold is a star attorney and candidate who is a bright part of the future of the Republican Party of Illinois,” said Rauner campaign spokesman Will Allison. “Burt Minor’s racist and demeaning language has no place in the GOP or our society. He should drop out of the race.”)

https://chicago.suntimes.com/news/ag-hopeful-harold-to-house-candidate-drop-out-for-using-n-word-lesbo-slurs/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Harold — a Harvard Law graduate and former Miss America — said it happened in early October as she was meeting with various people in DuPage County to introduce herself and get advice about how to campaign in the county. “We had a meeting with [Winfield Township Republican Chairman] Burt Minor, and during the course of the conversation he asked me if I had children. I said no. He asked me if I was married. I said no. He then asked me if I had ever been married. I said no. And then he said. ‘Well then are you a lesbo?’” Harold said she told him no. “But then I also made it clear that someone’s sexual orientation should not be used to disqualify them for running for office,” Harold said. Harold said Minor seemed “surprised” that she was standing up for herself. Within the same conversation, Minor also asked Harold whether it was ever appropriate to use the n-word, “but he said the full word,” she said. “I haven’t heard anyone use that word in a very long time, and I told him it was inappropriate for anyone to say that,” Harold said, adding he used the word “about three or four times and did not apologize for doing so.” Harold said she discussed the incident with fellow Republicans at the time, but did not go public because Minor was not running for office.)

— AG Candidate Grasso: Harold ‘Has Not Even Tried A Single Case’ In a new radio ad, Republican candidate Gary Grasso described his opponent, Erika Harold, as “untested” and “liberal.” – Jonah Meadows (DIERSEN: I argued a lawsuit before Judge Posner in 1996. SEE: David J. Diersen v. Chicago Car Exchange, Inc., 110 F.3d 481 (7th Cir. 1997), cert. denied, 118 S.Ct. 178 (1997) (http://caselaw.findlaw.com/us-7th-circuit/1385001.html) The lawsuit involved the Federal Odometer Act (FOA), Department of Transportation (DOT) authority to grant exemptions from the FOA, and the sufficiency of material facts that would make a dealer suspicious of a car’s mileage. On September 16, 1996, I presented oral arguments to Chief Judge Posner and Judges Coffey and Kanne. On March 31, 1997, the Appellate Court agreed with me and ruled that DOT lacked authority to grant exemptions to the FOA, and that therefore, its exemption for cars over 10 years old was invalid.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner (R) on Wednesday took a gulp of chocolate milk to demonstrate the positive effects of corporate diversity and inclusion. During an appearance at the Thompson Center in Chicago, Rauner joined Hyatt Hotels diversity and inclusion executive Tyronne Stoudemire to discuss diversity in the workplace. Thompson poured a glass of white milk to demonstrate that most organizations are led by white men. “This chocolate syrup represents diversity,” Stoudemire said, pouring some into the glass. “When you look at most organizations, diversity sits at the bottom of the organization. You don’t get inclusion until you actually stir it up,” he continued, prompting Rauner to stir the syrup into the milk. “Diversity is the mix, and inclusion is making the mix work,” Stoudemire concluded, inviting Rauner to drink the chocolate milk. “It’s really, really good. Diversity!” Rauner declared to the crowd. Rauner is up for reelection in November. He’s facing a primary challenge from state Rep. Jeanne Ives (R). Among the Democratic challengers are Chris Kennedy, the son of Robert Kennedy, and J.B. Pritzker, whose family owns Hyatt Hotels.)

— Rauner, Ives take shots at each other at GOP luncheon – Andrew Feather
http://www.wsiltv.com/story/37480046/rauner-ives-take-shots-at-each-other-at-gop-luncheon
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner and his primary challenger Jeanne Ives continued to take shots at each other Saturday at the Williamson County Republican Women’s Lincoln Day Luncheon. Ives said Rauner betrayed Illinois conservatives by signing what she called liberal legislation, including taxpayer funds to pay for abortions and making Illinois a sanctuary state. “For the last three year he’s lied to everybody about everything,” said Ives. “You can’t trust him for another four years.” Rauner said Ives is the one who is not telling the truth. “Let me be crystal clear: I am adamantly against Illegal immigration,” said Rauner. “I would never allow Illinois to become a sanctuary.” For much of the day the topic centered around one person: House Speaker Mike Madigan As the candidates stressed the importance of replacing longtime house speaker Mike Madigan, Gov. Rauner said he’s the only Republican candidate who can lead that movement. “Democrats want Madigan gone almost as much as Republicans do and this is the time we can bring people together,” said Rauner. “This is the time for a revolution. The people of Illinois stand together and say no more corrupt Chicago political machine.” But Ives claims Rauner had given in to Madigan in the past and would continue to if re-elected. A poll released last month showed Rauner ahead in the primary race by more than 40 points, but a Public Policy Polling survey last week found only 26 percent of Illinoisans have a favorable view of the governor. Illinois primaries will take place March 20.)

http://www.columbiachronicle.com/metro/article_c114f97a-0df5-11e8-8ac6-8326e45b15f6.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In an attempt to capitalize on Rauner’s low approval rating, his primary opponent, state Rep. Jeanne Ives of Wheaton, Illinois, launched a controversial attack ad Feb. 2, titled “Thank you, Bruce Rauner,” which was met with criticism from activist groups, newspaper editorial boards and even members of her own Republican party. “[Attack ads] can have a beneficial or a negative impact,” said Jim Allen, spokesman at the Chicago Board of Elections. “A certain amount of conflict is good.” It is “par for the course” to attack an incumbent with negative commercials, Mooney said, and Ives’ “Thank you, Bruce Rauner” ad is trying to appeal to President Donald Trump’s voter base. Though Trump lost Illinois in the 2016 presidential election, he did resonate with many downstate Republican voters, and Ives is trying to galvanize those voters, he added. However, Ives’ negative ads are so politically incorrect that they could mobilize voters to check Rauner’s name on the ballot in protest against her candidacy, according to Mooney. Historically, far-right conservatives in statewide Illinois primaries only account for anywhere between 25–30 percent of the vote, and the majority tend to be socially moderate, he added.)

REPUBLICAN NEWS WATCH
— President Trump is the Last Hope for Illinois – DOUG IBENDAHL (DIERSEN: Which candidates on the March 20, 2018 Republican primary ballot for your precinct have done the most to paint themselves as being anti-Trump?)
http://republicannewswatch.com/wp/?p=14420
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Illinois Republican Governor Bruce Rauner is a lost cause. He’s made his bed with his proven record of dishonesty, incompetence and betrayal. And he certainly can’t expect President Trump’s help at this point. Rauner isn’t savvy enough to seek it in any case. Republican Primary challenger Jeanne Ives could easily defeat Rauner. Ives’ problem is she hasn’t really earned President Trump’s support or that of his supporters. It’s still not too late but she would have to make significant changes. Right now she doesn’t seem to be truly behind the President or his winning agenda. She’s not a Never-Trumper like Rauner, but her support is lukewarm at best, as evidenced by the way she’s blown her most obvious path to victory thus far. History says that mid-term elections are usually bad for an incoming President’s party. But I don’t think that will be the case this year for Republicans nationally. Trump has saved the GOP from itself. However, Illinois is likely to buck the trend. It certainly wouldn’t be the first time. President Trump should be a huge asset for any Illinois Republican running this year. However, laziness and horrible judgment by the local yokels are squandering the potential. Failure to stand with the President against the Left and its media toadies, coupled with refusal to help educate voters about the winning Trump agenda are turning an asset into a liability. Clearly we’re saddled with a lot of cowards in Illinois politics. That’s not seriously debatable. But one would think even cowards would be smart enough to act in their own self-interest. The Trump agenda represents the only serious plan out there for rebuilding America and the work is well underway. Smart politicians in other states across the country get it. Their states are already reaping positive results from the Trump economy. And they’ll continue to welcome some of the best and brightest from Illinois who decide they can no longer tolerate this state’s incompetence and dysfunction. Illinois Republicans have only one card left to play and that’s the Trump Card. Played well the GOP could restore hope to all Illinoisans from Cairo to Chicago and beyond.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The proposal would end regular tenure and merit-based raises for more than 1.5 million federal government employees. Instead, the plan will call on government agencies to reward employees with performance-based raises and other incentives. . .In addition, the plan seeks to phase out the traditional pension-based retirement plan and adopt employee-contribution plans found in the private sector. Overall, the plan seeks to bring employee pay and benefits to the modern age. . .The Associated Press noted that moving to performance-based work could lead to the termination of many government employees with poor work reviews. . .What are government employees saying? According to USA Today, unions representing federal government employees are not a fan of the changes. David Cox, president of the American Federation of Government Employees, said the changes “wipe out due process rights for employees.” Cox also expressed concern government leadership would use the changes to punish women, minorities and political dissidents. “He seems to be interested in political revenge by firing people,” Cox said of Trump. “The government is not a family business that you get to be in total control of.”)

— Federal pay may take hit in 2019 budget – Joe Davidson (DIERSEN: Since 1989, the Democrats who run GAO have used pay-for-performance (PFP) a) to hire, retain, and promote those who are Democrat, minority, female, and/or younger and b) to get rid of its employees who are Republican, White, male, and/or non-veteran. To get rid of me, my Democrat GAO superiors in GAO’s Chicago office always ranked me in the lower half of my coworkers for PFP purposes.)
https://www.sfgate.com/news/article/Federal-pay-may-take-hit-in-2019-budget-12606628.php

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Associated Press reported Trump will propose a pay-for-performance plan for most feds, a notion that makes union leaders seethe. Performance-based pay sounds like a reasonable idea, but federal employees remember it from the National Security Personnel System at the Defense Department under the last Republican president, George W. Bush. The implementation was so troubled, the buy-in from employees so poor, and the program so beleaguered with charges of racial discrimination that Congress abolished the program. Now Trump reportedly wants to install a much broader pay-for-performance system. He won’t get it without a tough fight from federal labor leaders and their Democratic allies. A pay-for-performance system would be a “nail in the coffin of the apolitical professional civil service,” said J. David Cox Sr., president of the American Federation of Government Employees, the largest federal employee union. In addition to the experience-based complaints against performance-based pay, labor leaders warn against Trump’s twisted notion of narcissistic fidelity. “Does anybody want a system that allows financial rewards – funded by taxpayers – to be provided exclusively to those deemed loyal to the administration?” Cox asked. “Does anybody want a pay system that denies pay adjustments to people considered disloyal to the administration? Pity the EPA scientist whose work demonstrates the existence of climate change.” The president’s reported proposal would save the government $10 billion over 10 years, which means that’s what it would cost federal employees. It would apply to about 1.5 million federal workers out of about 2 million. It is not clear who would be excluded. “In reality, performance-based pay in the federal government is a cost-containment tool, nothing more,” Randy Erwin, president of the National Federation of Federal Employees, said in an email. “Once federal workers’ pay becomes ambiguous, it becomes easier to whittle away.”)

http://www.news-gazette.com/news/local/2018-02-11/tom-kacich-101st-hopeful-discusses-endorsement-proft.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Illinois House candidate Dan Caulkins says he didn’t do anything special to earn the endorsement of radio host Dan Proft, his Liberty Principles Political Action Committee and, at last count, more than $105,000 in uncoordinated campaign support. “Their mission is to recruit good, solid conservatives for government. They feel the need, and they have the ability to support people that they believe are honest, hardworking and conservative, people who can go to Springfield and articulate a conservative message and who believe in limited government, lower taxes, reducing the regulations on business that will make Illinois prosperous again. I fill that bill,” said Caulkins, a former Decatur City Council member. At the time he was interviewed by Proft last summer, he said he didn’t know how much support he’d get or even if he’d be backed by the conservative group in the three-way Republican race in the 101st House District. The other candidates are Randy Keith of Monticello and Todd Henricks of Cerro Gordo. “I wasn’t the only candidate they interviewed in the 101st. After the interview they told me that there were other people they’d talk to before they made a decision. And they chose to support me,” he said. (FROM THE ARTICLE: For decades, marijuana flowed in one direction across the U.S.-Mexico border: north. These days, drug enforcement agents regularly seize specialty strains of retail-quality cannabis grown in the United States being smuggled south. Widespread legalization in the U.S. is killing Mexico’s marijuana business, and cartel leaders know it. They are increasingly abandoning the crop that was once was their bread and butter and looking elsewhere for profits, producing and exporting drugs including heroin and fentanyl and banking on extortion schemes and fuel theft. So when Mexico’s tourism secretary boldly declared his hopes that Mexico will legalize marijuana for recreational use in an effort to reduce growing violence across the nation, some balked at the notion that marijuana was driving the bloodshed.)

http://www.sj-r.com/news/20180209/civic-federation-recommends-taxing-services-retirement-to-stabilize-state
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Ahead of Gov. Bruce Rauner’s budget address next week, the Civic Federation is again calling for taxing some retirement income and extending the state sales tax to some services as part of its proposal to stabilize state finances. The Civic Federation, which is a watchdog over state finances, said the budget passed last summer to end the two-year budget impasse meant the state “was no longer careening toward unprecedented financial disaster.” “However, our elected officials again relied on shaky financial practices for short-term relief, such as counting on dubious one-time revenues and repeatedly kicking the pension can down the road,” said Federation president Laurence Msall in a statement. “Such actions only make achieving sound financial footing more difficult.” The Civic Federation compiled a list of 11 steps it believes the state should follow to reestablish the state’s financial health. Number one on the list is limiting annual spending growth to 2.1 percent for the next five years at a minimum. The group recommended other cost control measures like cutting the interest rate the state pays on overdue bills, consolidating government units and creating a commission to explore consolidating governance of state universities. Other recommendations will be more difficult, Msall acknowledged. The organization said the state should impose the income tax on the same retirement income that is taxed at the federal level. For example, there is a federal income tax on 401(k) distributions, but Illinois does not tax them. Imposing that tax has been a third rail in Illinois politics. Also, the report calls for a constitutional amendment to be placed on the ballot “to clarify the pension protection clause.” That clause prevents lawmakers from enacting cuts to pensions of current public employees. The report recommends extending the sales tax to 14 services that are also taxed in Wisconsin, such as landscaping and internet services. The federation also is calling for a new capital construction bill that would be financed by an increase in the gasoline tax. Rauner will deliver his budget speech on Wednesday.)

http://www.sj-r.com/news/20180208/fox-news-pirro-rauner-fire-up-republicans-at-annual-dinner
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Leading Republican figures doubled down on their attacks on Democrats Thursday as they rallied the Sangamon County branch of the party during its 114th Lincoln Day Dinner in Springfield. More than 900 party members, leaders and politicians showed up for the event at the Bank of Springfield Center to hear special guest Jeanine Pirro, host of Fox News’ “Justice with Judge Jeanine” program, and Gov. Bruce Rauner. Rauner said the main goal for Republicans this year is to defeat longtime Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan, calling him a machine politician who was destroying the state. “It is a cancer that is eating us from the inside, sucking our vitality, sucking our quality of life to enrich himself and his friends inside government,” Rauner said. The governor focused on themes he has mentioned throughout his campaign: restoring economic success in Illinois and lowering taxation. He made a specific promise to fight a Democratic proposal for a progressive income tax, which would tax residents based upon their income level. “It ain’t progressive. It’s a destructive income tax hike that they want to put on the people of Illinois,” he said. “I will block that and make sure that our income taxes stay flat and low and actually down lower from where they are today and bring ’em back down to 3 percent over the next two years.” Pirro, meanwhile, focused on national issues. She praised the first year of President Donald Trump as a major improvement over Barack Obama and the rule of the Democratic Party, which she said was corrupt. She compared Trump to a maverick politician for doing things outside of norm for politicians. “He said things that weren’t politically correct, and he said things that weren’t considered acceptable,” she said. “But the forgotten men and women of this country heard him. And here we are one year later, with a resounding economy, with ISIS crushed in the Middle East, with unemployment at a 40-year low.” While acknowledging the stock market had taken downturn recently, she said Trump’s presidency has been a success thus far. Pirro said, however, there were still issues for the country to confront, specifically the FBI. She claimed the nation’s top law enforcement agency may have been politically biased and tried to ensure Trump’s 2016 opponent, Hillary Clinton, became president. She said the situation “absolutely scares the hell out me.” She said the picture started to become clear with former FBI director James Comey not indicting Clinton over managing classified documents on a private email server. She said she believes Comey wanted Clinton to become president and was hiding information from her and may also have been covering for Obama. “It’s time for James Comey to be the target of an active criminal investigation,” she said. She then cited the Russian uranium deal, made under Clinton’s tenure as Secretary of State, as another case that should be investigated, claiming a number of Washington politicians were working together to defend each other. According to Pirro, Robert Mueller, who is investigating allegations of Russia’s involvement in the 2016 presidential election, is among them. She claimed Mueller was out for revenge over not becoming FBI director when Comey was removed last year and instead collaborated with Republican Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to investigate Trump. “Rosenstein needed Mueller to be there. Comey needed Mueller to be there, because they were all involved in a case that involves the sale of the uranium,” she said. She likened the whole investigation to an attempt to overthrow the government and highlighted it as a reason for Republicans to make sure they vote in 2018. “The 2018s are gonna be tough. They’re gonna be real tough,” she said. “You better get ready for this. I don’t care if you walk house to house, use social media, tweet, text, email, get the millennials involved, go to the old age homes. Whatever you gotta do you gotta get out there.” Rauner said he was confident that 2018 would be successful. “All of us worked hard last year. 2016 — even though President Trump, unfortunately, lost Illinois by over 16 points — we in Illinois picked up six seats in the General Assembly for the Republicans in 2016,” he said. “And you watch, this year, this is our year. We are going to take it to the Madigan machine of corruption and cronyism. We are going to run a great slate of candidates this November, and we are going to win nine (House) seats and knock Mike Madigan out as speaker of the House.”)

— We All Have a Stake in the Stock Market, Right? Guess Again – Patricia Cohen

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Take a deep breath and relax. The riotous market swings that have whipped up frothy peaks of anxiety over the last week — bringing the major indexes down more than 10 percent from their high — have virtually no impact on the income or wealth of most families. The reason: They own little or no stock. A whopping 84 percent of all stocks owned by Americans belong to the wealthiest 10 percent of households. And that includes everyone’s stakes in pension plans, 401(k)’s and individual retirement accounts, as well as trust funds, mutual funds and college savings programs like 529 plans. “For the vast majority of Americans, fluctuations in the stock market have relatively little effect on their wealth, or well-being, for that matter,” said Edward N. Wolff, an economist at New York University who recently published new research on the topic. Both Republicans and Democrats have promoted the idea that a rising stock market broadly lifts Americans’ fortunes. When there was a parade of market rallies, President Trump asked, “How’s your 401(k) doing?”)

— Forget the 4% Rule: Rethinking Common Retirement Beliefs Three retirement-savings rules come into question as stocks and bonds get more expensive and retirements last longer – Anne Tergesen (DIERSEN: 10 times my 1997 GAO salary in today’s dollars is $1,253,250.)
https://www.wsj.com/articles/forget-the-4-rule-rethinking-common-retirement-beliefs-1518172201
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The 4% rule Conventional wisdom says you can withdraw 4% from your savings in the first year of retirement and give yourself an annual raise over the next 30 years to keep pace with inflation without a significant risk of going broke. For someone with a $1 million portfolio, the formula produces an initial income of $40,000 and—assuming inflation of 2.5%—an increase to $41,000 in year two. But in recent years, the rule’s safety has been questioned. While 4% would have worked over every 30-year retirement from 1926 on for an investor with 60% in large-company stocks and 40% in intermediate-term U.S. bonds, it failed in almost half of the simulations researchers recently ran using forecasts of future, rather than past, returns. As a result, “3% is the new safe withdrawal rate,” says Wade Pfau, a professor at the American College of Financial Services in Bryn Mawr, Pa., who ran the numbers with Mr. Blanchett and Michael Finke, also of the American College. . .Finding your ‘number’ This rule calls for amassing a specific dollar amount, such as 10 times your current salary, before retiring. — ‘Hire the best and fire the worst’: Trump proposes biggest civil service change in 40 years – Gregory Korte (DIERSEN: Because I have always been a Republican, were it not for federal civil service protections, a) the Post Office would NOT have hired me in 1966 or let me work there for almost 3 years, b) IRS would NOT have hired me in 1971 or let me work there for almost 9 years, c) IRS would NOT have promoted me in 1972, 1973, or 1974, d) GAO would NOT have hired me in 1980 or let me work there for almost 18 years, and e) GAO would NOT have promoted me in 1986.)
https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2018/02/09/hire-best-and-fire-worst-trump-proposes-biggest-civil-service-change-40-years/315981002/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Trump foreshadowed the proposal in a line in his State of the Union address last week: “Tonight, I call on Congress to empower every Cabinet Secretary with the authority to reward good workers and to remove federal employees who undermine the public trust or fail the American people,” he said. Trump is using the VA Accountability Act, which gave the Secretary of Veterans Affairs greater authority to fire and discipline workers, as a model. The White House says that law has resulted in the dismissal of 1,470 employees, the suspension of 443, demotions for 83 others last year. “While to some people those are code wards, they’re very clear to us,” said American Federation of Government Employees President J. David Cox, who represents about 700,000 workers for the federal government and District of Columbia. “Basically it wipes out due process rights for employees.” Another pillar of the proposal would reduce automatic pay increases and instead use that money for a performance bonus pool. Under the current system, federal employees get a review every one to three years. Employees whose performance is “fully successful” — as 99.7% are — get a within-grade “step” increase in addition to annual cost-of-living increases. Trump’s plan would stretch out the amount of time it takes to go from step 1 to step 10 from 18 years to 27 years, saving $10 billion over the next decade, officials said. That money would then go to high-performing employees either as merit raises or one-time bonuses. Federal employee unions fear the pay-per-performance plan would be used to reward loyalists and discriminate against women and minorities. “He seems to be interested in political revenge by firing people,” Cox said. “The government is not a family business that you get to be in total control of.” Some of Trump’s proposals can be done administratively, and others would take congressional action. Trump’s efforts to wrangle the bureaucracy fulfill a key campaign promise of the businessman president, who pledged a hiring freeze to shrink the cost of government and reduce regulation.)

(THE REPORT: Last night’s fundraiser was a great success with just over 80 people in attendance and the contributions still coming in. Lieutenant Governor Evelyn Sanguinetti discussed how devastating it would be for Illinois with J.B. Pritzker as Governor, John Cullerton as the Senate President, and Mike Madigan as the House Majority leader. Erika Harold highlighted the state of corruption that exist in Springfield and made the case for how important it is to have a real Attorney General in office. Both speakers talked about how important it is to have elected leaders like Kevin Wiley in officer. Kevin has been serving us locally as a Fire District Board Trustee and now as you DuPage County Board Member. He has also been serving us for over 34-years in the United States Army and is now a Colonel in the 9th Mission Support Command in the Pacific. His family has chosen to serve as well. His daughter now sits on the Wheaton Chamber of Commerce, his eldest son is serving with the 82nd Airborne, and his youngest son is an ROTC cadet at Wheaton College. Standing by their side making it all possible is Laura Wiley. Bob Larsen and Jim Zay talked about the County Boards accomplishments and emphasized how we have kept the property tax levy flat. Then to wrap the night up, Kevin Wiley thanked all in attendance and shared a quote from the Super Bowl Champions Head Coach Doug Pederson. “An individual can make a difference, a team can make a miracle”. But few in Springfield — or elsewhere in Illinois — paid attention. That changed when Tillman relaunched the institute in 2007. The organization steadily expanded its work and influence after the conservative activist took over, while contributions shot up from about $341,000 in 2007 to $6.4 million in 2016 — a nearly 19-fold increase in a decade. Tillman was also able to ratchet up the group’s output of research and advocacy. Its studies and opinion pieces on cutting government spending and boosting transparency became must-read material to many Republicans, some Democrats — and to the governor of Illinois. But while the institute attacked political insiders for profiting off the system, Tillman was able to increase his own bottom line, parlaying a small-government message into growing paychecks for himself and other top staff members, tax filings and audits show. . .In 2015, the Illinois Opportunity Project paid $102,000 to AKJ Consulting of Hinsdale —- an entity whose agent and manager is Pat Hughes, one of the co-founders and leaders of the Illinois Opportunity Project. Hughes also holds positions at the Liberty Justice Center and Illinois Policy Institute. In 2014, Think Freely Media reported paying $64,000 to Dan Proft as a consultant. Proft, another founder of the Illinois Opportunity Project, was a senior fellow at the institute until taking a leave to focus on political work, which includes running the political action committee Liberty Principles. During 2015 and 2016, Think Freely also paid $211,500 to Starfish Consulting LLC, which lists Proft as its president in its state registration . . .In 2013, Tillman held leadership positions at all five nonprofits, which reported to the IRS that he worked a total of 51 hours a week for $485,411 in total pay. The following year, he reported working 75 hours a week at the organizations, though his pay fell to $398,414. The reported numbers show that Tillman collected pay that was often well above how comparable organizations in other states compensated their leaders. His reported compensation dropped again in 2015, to $366,631. But that still exceeded the pay of top executives at other, similar organizations, including the Michigan-based Mackinac Center and the Texas Public Policy Foundation, tax records show. Those pay figures don’t include money that Tillman received from Crowdskout or other for-profit entities. Tillman said his pay was fair. “We compare my compensation to a variety of organizations of similar size, impact and growth, state-based and national, including ProPublica,” Tillman wrote.)

http://www.dailyherald.com/news/20180208/42nd-gop-hopefuls-talk-abortion-bill-religious-freedom-laws
(FROM THE ARTICLE: All three are Catholic and describe themselves as “pro-life,” but Minor says that while he was “disappointed greatly” that Rauner signed a bill allowing tax dollars to pay for abortions, he would work with that existing law. Grant and Byrne disagree. “Taxpayers should not have to fund abortions,” Grant says, adding that she would like to see the landmark Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision legalizing abortions be overturned. Saying that he “wrestles” with the potential “threat of two lives lost” in an illegal abortion, Byrne says, “I don’t think it should be funded by taxpayer dollars.” The candidates also differed on so-called religious freedom laws that would allow medical facilities and business owners the right to discriminate against people who request services that are in opposition to the vendors’ religious beliefs. Grant and Byrne said businesses should have the right to discriminate for religious reasons, but should strive to be polite, compassionate and civil. Minor disagreed with the laws. “We have to protect anybody,” Minor said. All the candidates favor some form of term limits for politicians, as well as a restructuring of Illinois’ pension system to move future governmental employees into contribution plans such as 401(k) funds. Byrne supports the legalization of recreational marijuana, which he called a “great, untapped resource” for tax revenue, while Grant and Minor said they would not favor the legalization.)
