October 30 Morning Edition

HERALD EXTRA
— OCTOBER 3, 2017 FLASHBACK: Your local newspaper: The real deal – JIM ZACHARY (DIERSEN: What do you say to activists, to candidates, to campaign managers, to elected officials, to party leaders, to major donors, and to political consultants in Illinois who state that they are conservative and/or Republican, but who fail/refuse to keep
diersen@aol.com on their press advisory and press release lists? I have served as your GOPUSA Illinois Editor since 2000. Since 2004, I have sent out GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails each and every morning, and since 2015, each and every evening too. Those emails have included links to almost 285,600 articles and information on many upcoming Republican events. What do you say to those who “punish” me by not sending me their press advisories and press releases a) because I refuse to serve as one or their operatives or dupes, b) because I refuse to carry out their backlist orders, c) because I have included links in GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails to articles that they do not like, d) because I have failed/refused to give them money, e) because they blame me for their problems, for your problems, for my problems, and for everyone’s problems, f) because I am “too conservative,” g) because they want to curry favor with my competitors, Rich Miller, and/or the rest of the Democrat news media in Illinois, and/or h) because they focus on destroying individuals like me, organizations like TAPROOT Republicans of Illinois, companies, and governments that they cannot manipulate/dominate? They do not want me a) to know about or promote their public events and other public activities, b) to attend their events, and c) to report on their public events and other activities. They do not want anyone to first learn of anything by reading GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails. They want you to only know what they want you to know. They paint me as being illegitimate if not worse things a) because I sent out GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails free of charge, b) because the emails do not contain any advertising, c) because no one pays me for what I do as your GOPUSA Illinois Editor, d) because I do not have a college degree in journalism, and/or e) because I state that I am conservative and Republican. They proudly paint themselves as being anti-Diersen. They do not return my phone calls. They read my emails for “opposition research.” Should I publish a list of the aforesaid punishers? Some of them, if not many of them, talk and act like they want me to do that.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: In a world of fake news spread on social media and attacks on the media from people in power, it is important for the public to know the difference between legitimate reporting by credible sources and all the noise posing as “the media.” Here are some reasons your local newspaper is the most trustworthy source for news and information: — Newspaper newsrooms are staffed with real people — people you know — reporters, photographers, editors — gathering the news, conducting interviews, covering meetings, attending events, writing, editing, fact-checking and making sure every day you can trust what you read. — Newspapers rely on recognizable sources. Quotes in the articles you read are attributed to real people and can be easily verified. — Newspapers work hard to stay away from single source reporting, giving readers context and balance. — Newspaper websites have legitimate URLs ending in .com or .org extensions, listing contact information, the names of staff members and the media organization’s leadership team on the website. — Newspapers correct mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes at times, but there is a big difference between an error and intentionally and knowingly publishing a false report because of some political or social agenda. Spurious websites, blogs and social media do not correct errors. They thrive on them. In the United States newspapers have a long and important legacy of holding the powerful accountable, defending the First Amendment and advocating for government transparency. Democracy is protected when the newspaper provides checks and balances as the Fourth Estate of government from city hall to the courthouse to the statehouse to the White House. Newspapers are committed to the neighborhoods, cities, counties, states and coverage areas they serve. Straightforward news reporting and thought-provoking commentary give a voice to the voiceless and empower the powerless. Newspapers hold government accountable because at our very core we believe that government belongs to the governed and not to the governing. Don’t be embarrassed because you shared some sensational, agenda-driven report on social media only to find out it is totally fake. Get your news where real news has always been found: Your local newspaper, the real deal.)

While I worked for the federal government for almost 30 years (Post Office 1966-1969, IRS 1971-1980, and GAO 1980-1997), I saw absolutely no sexual harassment. All my superiors, all my supervisors, all my coworkers, and all my subordinates knew that all women are members of a protected class and that they should be given preference.)

— Why it’s easier to concentrate in a coffee shop than an open office – Geoffrey James (DIERSEN: In 1990, GAO moved to new office space in a new building – 200 West Adams in Chicago. I got a preferred corner office because a) I had been promoted to GS-13 in 1986 and b) I had more federal seniority because I had worked for IRS for almost 9 years and I had worked for the Post Office for almost 3 years. Needless-to-say, my Democrat GAO superiors, supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates were beyond furious.)

— Scream at the sky. Then what? – Heather Wilhelm
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/opinion/commentary/ct-perspec-wilhelm-trump-anniversary-scream-sky-1030-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: On n Nov. 8, it’s anticipated that thousands of Americans in at least nine cities will take to the streets to “scream helplessly at the sky.” You can probably guess the reason: It’s to mark the one-year anniversary of the election of Donald Trump as president. Can you believe it’s almost been a year since the election? Time flies when everyone seems to be losing their minds! Here’s the good news: If you’re reading this, you’re still alive. The stock market seems downright giddy — knock on wood, at least for now — and despite our president’s occasionally baffling and sometimes alarming tweets, our country is apparently still free enough for people to get on Facebook and organize cross-country protests that involve shouting at clouds.)
— Make it worth their time Young professionals need to follow 3 rules to impress executives – Mary Rezek (DIERSEN: Non-veteran White males who are seeking a job with the federal government should be advised that with only rare exceptions, your career will be wasted and you will be gotten rid of if you do not make GS-13 (currently $94,610) by age 25, GS-14 (currently $111,801) by age 30, GS-15 (currently $131,508) by age 35, and Senior Executive Service (currently $161,900) by age 40. To impress your Democrat supervisors and your Democrat superiors, you need to impress them that a) you can and will help them get rid of their employees who are Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran and b) that can and will serve as their operative or dupe.)

https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2017/10/29/john-boehner-trump-house-republican-party-retirement-profile-feature-215741

We met three times over the summer, his most candid and revealing series of interviews since a third attempted coup on his speakership led him to say to hell with it and retire early.)

NEW YORK TIMES
— MARCH 18, 2002 FLASHBACK: Animosity High in Both Parties In Illinois Governor Primaries – AP (DIERSEN: Who do you blame for your losses? My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes continue to blame me and my GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails for all losses that Republicans have suffered in Illinois since 2000, but especially Jim Ryan’s loss to Blagojevich in the 2002 general election. Of course, if a Democrat becomes the next governor of Illinois, my critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes will blame me and my GOPUSA ILLINOIS emails for that.)
http://www.nytimes.com/2002/03/18/us/animosity-high-in-both-parties-in-illinois-governor-primaries.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Republicans, facing their first real contested primary in decades, have worked to distance themselves from the governor’s problems. The two other Republican candidates, State Senator Patrick O’Malley and Lt. Gov. Corinne Wood, accused Jim Ryan of knowing about the bribery scheme but refusing to use his power as attorney general to stop it. The attorney general maintains that it would have been irresponsible for him to get involved in a federal investigation. Recent polls have shown Jim Ryan with about 50 percent of the vote. . .Among the Republican candidates, Ms. Wood ran advertisements calling Mr. Ryan and Mr. O’Malley “too extreme” because they oppose abortion even in cases of rape and incest. Ms. Wood is also courting Democrats and liberal groups to cross over to the Republican primary and vote for her.)

— How America deals with Hate Speech – James Kirk Wall
http://www.chicagonow.com/an-atheist-in-illinois/2017/10/how-america-deals-with-hate-speech/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In 1995 the KKK came to Wheaton, IL Wheaton is a Western suburb of Chicago next to Naperville. In 1995 the Ku Klux Klan legally obtained a permit to demonstrate in the county court house. So what do you do when this happens in your town? An organization of hate and ignorance which has historically caused great suffering to a great number of people. This is how it was handled in Wheaton. Citizens of Mexican heritage organized a 26-piece mariachi band to perform on the common grounds. There were also protestors. If you came to this event you could stand with the protestors and chant, “Hey! Hey! Ho! Ho! KKK has got to go!” Or you could hang out with the band and do a little La Bamba. The best case scenario for a KKK rally is that nobody shows up. Having not that many people there and a mariachi band wasn’t a bad response. That organization hasn’t been back to Wheaton since. There was a police presence to keep the peace. To make sure people were protected from harmful actions, not offensive words.)

http://illinoisreview.typepad.com/illinoisreview/2017/10/rauner-ilgop-staff-deny-republicans-access-to-party-headquarters-.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In a press release today, the Chicago Republican Party expressed disappointment that a staffer has been denied access to Illinois Republican Party headquarters. The Chicago GOP staffer was told by a Rauner staffer that he could no longer use a desk within the office. According to the press release, the reason the IL GOP offered is a press report that Chris Cleveland, chairman of the Chicago Republican Party, is under consideration as a running mate for State Rep Jeanne Ives. Ives is considering a gubernatorial bid. “We’re disappointed the governor’s team would do something like this. We’re running candidates in Chicago, and the city and state parties need to coordinate so they’re not left out in the cold,” said Cleveland. “The governor should be above such petty retribution.”)

Further, they wanted me to serve as an “example” to current and potential future GAO employees. They wanted current and potential future GAO employees to see a) that GAO gives preference to its employees who are Democrat, minority, female, younger, and/or veteran, that is, that GAO discriminates against its employees who are Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran and b) that GAO wastes the careers of and gets rid of its employees who complain about political affiliation discrimination, reverse discrimination, or age discrimination. My father was the first of his ancestors to earn a high school diploma. My mother never attended high school. I spent my junior and senior years and the summer in between washing dishes for the minimum wage in the basement of the S.S. Kresges in Chicago Heights. I just barely made into the top 20% of my class, my ACT score was only 24, and I was draft bait.)

POLITICO ILLINOIS
— ROSKAM rethinks supporting RAUNER – Natasha Korecki
http://www.politico.com/tipsheets/illinois-playbook/2017/10/20/politico-illinois-playbook-roskam-rethinks-supporting-rauner-laquan-mcdonald-three-years-later-rahms-all-in-for-third-term-222901
(FROM THE ARTICLE: U.S. Rep. Peter Roskam, R-Ill., is rethinking his support for Gov. Bruce Rauner given the governor’s recent signature on a bill that expands the public funding of abortion, the congressman told POLITICO. Roskam, the Ways & Means Tax Policy chairman who is taking a lead role in an effort to overhaul the U.S. tax code, is the highest-ranking elected official in Illinois to potentially pull back from Rauner after the governor signed HB40. The new abortion law — which Rauner had promised to veto — has so infuriated conservatives, they are now talking about drafting a potential primary opponent to challenge Rauner. Roskam said Rauner’s move to sign the bill was “fundamentally out of step” with his congressional district. “I’ve got to reevaluate that and I’ll reevaluate that in the right time,” Roskam said Thursday when asked if he still supported Rauner. “Signing HB40 was a huge mistake on the policy and it was a huge mistake on the politics. The policy, this is the home of Henry Hyde, the author of the Hyde Amendment and I am his successor.” Roskam himself is facing a reelection challenge and Democrats are lining up to oppose him next year after Hillary Clinton won Roskam’s district in 2016 even as Roskam was reelected. “People have a wide range of views on the question of abortion, and right to life and so forth. But there’s a lot of agreement on this notion that taxpayers ought not to be compelled — and particularly in this environment — to pay for this,” Roskam said. “The politics are very challenging, I think. A big part of the coalition that elects Republicans is a pro-life constituency at a core and I think politics and policy make this error more and more glaring over time … It is a position fundamentally out of step with my constituency.” Is it a sign of a more sizable pulling away from Rauner? While Illinois’ Republican delegation jointly sent out a statement condemning Rauner’s action at the time of the bill signing, so far only Roskam has raised the possibility of withholding support. U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis, R-Ill., said Thursday Rauner still had his backing. From a Davis spokesperson: “Congressman Davis is pro-life so he was obviously disappointed in Governor Rauner’s decision to sign HB 40 but he has worked with the governor on many issues beneficial to the 13th district and will continue to do so. Politics will play out but Congressman Davis will continue to work to improve the state of Illinois.” Other Republicans from the delegation — Darin LaHood and John Shimkus — did not respond to inquiries about whether they still stand behind Rauner. A spokesman for U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren said only that the statement from the HB40 signing still stands.)

POLITICO
— America’s government is getting old  It’s not just the 71-year-old president: A POLITICO analysis finds that the federal workforce is older than it’s ever been, and younger workers aren’t coming in. What happened? – DANNY VINIK (DIERSEN: Non-veteran White males who are seeking a job with the federal government should be advised that with only rare exceptions, a) the longer that you are a federal employee, the less likely that private sector employers will hire you, b) your career will be wasted and you will be gotten rid of if you do not make GS-13 (currently $94,610) by age 25, GS-14 (currently $111,801) by age 30, GS-15 (currently $131,508) by age 35, and Senior Executive Service (currently $161,900) by age 40, c) you will be expected to help your superiors and supervisors get rid of their employees who are Republican, White, male, older, and/or non-veteran, and d) virtually everyone despises if not hates federal employees, former federal employees, and federal retirees.)
http://www.politico.com/agenda/story/2017/09/27/aging-government-workforce-analysis-000525
(FROM THE ARTICLE: It’s no secret that American workers are getting older. Even as millennials become the biggest cohort in the labor force, the median age of all U.S. employees has crept up from 30 to 42 over the past 30 years. But when it comes to getting older, a POLITICO analysis finds, the private sector has nothing on the U.S. government. The U.S. just elected the oldest new president in history, and Congress, too, has been getting consistently older, with its average age now up around 60. But the vast majority of the government consists of the 2 million-strong federal civilian workforce. And thanks to slow-moving hiring practices and a huge cohort of baby boomers who haven’t retired at the predicted rates, it has grown significantly older than the American workforce overall. Today, just 17 percent of federal workers are under 35 years old. (In the private sector, almost 40 percent are.) And more than a quarter of federal employees are now older than 55. In some agencies, the upward age shift is even starker. Sixty nine percent of NASA’s workforce is over 45 years old. At the Department of Housing and Urban Development, it’s 70 percent. At the tiny Government Publishing Office, it’s even more extreme—80 percent. In principle, there’s nothing wrong with older workers: They have more experience than younger ones and employers often report that they are more attentive at work. Age discrimination is not just illegal, but strips companies of experience and judgment; it’s fair to say that plenty of Silicon Valley companies might benefit from the perspective of a more experienced cohort of employees. But workplaces that shift too far in any direction can suffer. There is evidence that offices with more older workers are less productive and, due to their workers’ age, more expensive; health care costs are especially high, and a wave of retirements would leave the government on the hook for a major increase in pension spending. And broadly speaking, if the government is supposed to reflect America accurately—making small and large policy decisions that affect every aspect of the country—it’s only reasonable to expect that the federal workforce should reflect the generational makeup of the country. Given the stereotypes about government employees, it’s easy to assume that federal worker protections have led to a vast army of aging-in-place bureaucrats who simply can’t be removed. But organizational experts and former federal human resource managers say the problem is more complicated than that, and more troubling for good governance. They see an ineffective hiring system that is decades out of date. They have spent years warning policymakers that rules and laws were inhibiting their ability to hire and train new employees. The aging of the federal workforce, they say, is a symptom of Washington’s inability to keep up with modern-day management practices and to plan for the future—as well as a system hamstrung by rigid federal employment directives, some of which, ironically, were aimed at freshening up the workforce.)

FEDERAL NEWS RADIO
— Just how partisan are federal workers? – Mike Causey (DIERSEN: Democrats run the federal government. While I worked for the federal government for almost 30 years (Post Office 1966-1969, IRS 1971-1980, & GAO 1980-1997) in the Chicago area, virtually all my superiors, supervisors, cowokers, and subordinates were Democrats. Those Democrats used Affirmative Action, Diversity, Inclusion, political affiliation discrimination, reverse discrimination, age discrimination, and retaliation a) to avoid hiring Republicans, b) to waste the careers of Republicans, and c) to get rid of Republicans, and especially Republicans who are White, male, older, and/or non-veteran.)
https://federalnewsradio.com/mike-causey-federal-report/2017/10/just-how-partisan-are-federal-workers/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Long before Donald Trump’s longshot bid to win the White House, unions representing federal workers and postal employees had almost exclusively supported Democratic candidates for the presidency and, with few exceptions, the House and Senate. They still do. Unions — very, very quietly — helped former Reps. Tom Davis (R-Va.) and Frank Wolf (R-Va.). They worked closely with Democrats with clout, like Reps. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) and Elijah Cummings (D-Md.), and former Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.), to sweeten meager pay raises proposed by the presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama. But mostly their endorsements, union PAC money and logistical support goes to Democratic candidates and incumbents. Outside of the highly-unionized U.S. Postal Service, the majority of federal civil servants do NOT belong to any union. It may be because they don’t like unions. Maybe they are too cheap to pay dues. Or maybe they don’t like the unions’ politics! Rather than being part of a block vote, it is just possible that feds tend to vote like their neighbors and not along party lines. Career feds at the Pentagon may see the world differently than their colleagues at the Environmental Protection Agency. After giving their full support to the election and reelection of President Obama, white-collar feds —with the backing of most Republican politicians — were hit with a three-year pay raise freeze. Many got semi-automatic time-in-grade raises, but the January pay raises didn’t happen. Regular annual special cash awards and recognition to outstanding career senior executives were skipped or downplayed by the Obama administration. Some feds feel like the Democrats take them for granted and Republicans take it for granted that most government workers are Democrats. . .So if Republicans want to drain the swamp because they believe it is infested with highly partisan bureaucrats and if Democrats take feds for granted, has anybody got a Plan B?)

Young Professionals Find Versatility in a Policy Degree  (DIERSEN: I worked for GAO 1980-1997.  Starting in 1981, when Charles Bowsher took over GAO and ran it for the next 15 years, his top priority was a) hiring those who had a master’s degree in public policy from an Ivy League university and were Democrat, minority, female, and/or younger and b) making way for the aforesaid by getting rid of the agency’s employees like me who did not have a master’s degree in public policy from an Ivy League university and were Republican, White, male, and/or older.  Soon, my almost 9 years experience working for IRS, the last 5 1/2 years of which at the GS-12 Step 1-5 levels, currently $79,563-$90,173, my 1976 MBA, my 1979 CPA certificate, my 1980 master’s degree in accounting, my 1981 Certified Internal Auditor certificate, my 1981 CPA license, my 1990 Certified Fraud Examiner certificate, my 1994 Certified Government Financial Manager certificate, my 1996 Certified Financial Services Auditor certificate, my 1997 Forensic Accountant certificate, and my 1997 master’s degree in financial markets and trading meant absolutely nothing to GAO. )

NEWSWEEK
— THE WAGE GAP IS ONLY GETTING WORSE, ESPECIALLY FOR AMERICA’S SENIOR CITIZENS – CHRISTIANNA SILVA  (DIERSEN: If you are financially secure, what would your critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes attribute that to?  My critics/opponents, their operatives, and their dupes would hint/imply/argue/shout that I was born with a silver spoon in my mouth, that I have always been privileged, that I avoided the draft, that the federal government grossly overpaid me, that my wife and I gave up trying to have children, that we did not adopt, that we did not become foster parents, that my federal retirement benefits are much too generous, that I do not give lots of money to churches like they do, etc.)
http://www.newsweek.com/old-americans-suffer-one-worst-wage-gaps-world-688081
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Income inequality is rising and the wage gap is widening for American workers—and the problem is even worse for U.S. senior citizens, a new report shows. It’s so bad, in fact, that the income inequality numbers among the elderly in the U.S. resemble more a report out of a developing country than what would be expected of America. The gap between wealthy and poor seniors is one of the widest in any nation in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. The only countries with wider gaps among seniors are Mexico and Chile, according to a study by the OECD and a CNN article. Past generations of retired Americans tended to see increased economic security, but with wages lower in comparison to inflation and fewer middle-class workers retiring with pensions, seniors now are not nearly as financially stable as in the past, according to CNN. Just 29 percent of Americans over 55 years old have a retirement savings account or a pension plan to lean on, a 2015 report from the Government Accountability Office showed. And it only gets worse as younger generations age, another OECD report shows.)
