— ‘So glad that this day finally came’: Cpl. Williams’ mom, friends see Warrenville post office renamed in his honor at last – Katlyn Smith

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Through letter campaigns and petition drives, Mike Barbier, now a Wheaton city councilman, and his fellow South classmates enlisted the support of lawmakers who passed a bill signed by President Donald Trump last December to rename the post office after Williams. Barbier knew Williams as a social butterfly in high school. Shortly after graduation, Williams joined the Army, motivated by a call of duty after the Sept. 11 attacks.)

If I had not had a job-related bachelor’s degree, Firestone Stores would not have hired me in 1970, Oldsmobile would not have offered me a job in 1971, and IRS would not have hired me in 1971. If I had not been taking job-related graduate courses, IRS might not have promoted me in 1972, 1973, and 1974. If I had not earned a job-related master’s degree in 1976, if I had not passed the CPA examination in 1979, and if I had not almost completed the requirements for a second job-related master’s degree, GAO would not have hired me in 1980. If I had not completed the requirements for a second job-related master’s degree in 1980, passed the Certified Internal Auditor examination in 1981, and became a licensed CPA in 1981, GAO might not have promoted me in 1986. If I had not earned job-related professional certifications in 1990, 1994, 1996, and 1997 and completed the requirements for a third job-related master’s degree in 1997, my Democrat GAO superiors might have succeeded in forcing me to take their early retirement “offer” sooner than they did.)

— Conflicts of interest can be interesting in Joliet – BOB OKON
https://www.theherald-news.com/2019/06/07/okon-conflicts-of-interest-can-be-interesting-in-joliet/a5gw6tz/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Interim City Manager Martin Shanahan meets the job description to become the permanent city manager, the city council was advised last week. Interim City Attorney Chris Regis provided the opinion because the matter had been raised by at least one council member. Interestingly enough, Regis delivered the opinion moments before Mayor Bob O’Dekirk declared that city staff should not be involved in any application process or candidate search for a permanent city manager because it would be a conflict of interest. The theory is that since all city staff falls under the supervision of Shanahan as interim city manager, they have a conflict of interest in the selection of a new city manager. Therefore, city employees who normally would be involved in a city hiring process cannot be called upon to provide staff support for the council in a candidate search or even in a simple posting of the job. Apparently, no conflict of interest applied to Regis, however, in determining that Shanahan met the job qualifications, although Regis is a city employee who was advising the council on whether they could hire Shanahan for the job.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: A lawsuit filed against a business that plans to sell recreational marijuana brought about 20 protesters to Railroad Square late Saturday morning. They stood across the street from Mark’s Deli, whose owner along with two other plaintiffs has challenged the city’s decision to allow the opening of a pot shop in the now-vacant quarters of the Sons of Italy at 124 Washington St. The lawsuit alleges that allowing the shop violates the constitutional rights of nearby property owners, violates federal narcotics laws and is detrimental to Haverhill. “I believe strongly we need to get the underground economy into the mainstream,” said Douglas Edison, a longtime community activist who is running for City Council. “Why are we stopping it? You can’t just say ‘no’ to everything,” he said. Edison pointed out the shop will pay taxes to the city. “We need money for schools,” Edison added. Caroline Pineau, who already owns and operates the Yoga Tree at 90 Washington St., hopes to open the recreational marijuana store. “I’ve been fighting for this for 15 years,” said Michael Crawford of Marblehead. He called the lawsuit “frivolous.” A friend of his who suffered from mental health problems and addiction had a very positive outcome after he started using medicinal marijuana, Crawford said. “It turned his life around,” he said. Crawford wore a shirt bearing the message, “more weed, less greed.” Another City Council candidate, Nick Golden, said Pineau is being “unfairly targeted” by the lawsuit. “She represents the type of person and entrepreneur that we’re trying to attract,” said Golden, who is on the staff of state Rep. Lori Ehrlich, D-Marblehead. “I think it’s really important to support small business owners,” Christina Barbieri, a former Haverhill resident, said. She and others noted that possession of marijuana is now legal in Massachusetts and that Haverhill voters supported this change. The protesters held signs with messages such as “drop the lawsuit.” Many motorists driving by honked in support of the cause. A few people voiced their objection to having a pot shop in the city, Crawford said. One man confronted the protesters and called them “immature.” As he walked away from the group, he extended his two middle fingers. Two police officers were assigned to the demonstration, which remained orderly. Officer James Keenan advised the man who made the obscene gestures to not cause a disturbance. Jess Hileman, a lifelong Haverhill resident and longtime patron of Mark’s Deli, said he does not think the owner of the restaurant objects to having a pot shop in Haverhill. “He only opposes the location,” he said. Hileman also said he did not think it was fair that some of the protesters were depicting the owner as a bad guy. A patron at Mark’s Deli said the owner did not want to speak to the media. The lawsuit lists the plaintiffs as Bradford Brooks, a local realty professional; Lloyd Jennings, a contractor; and Steve Dimakis, owner of Mark’s Deli. Brooks and Jennings are described as trustees of L&B Realty Trust. Dimakis is identified as a trustee of the Evthokia Realty Trust.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Public records show that lies went unchecked during the hiring process for a former Victoria teacher and coach accused of sexually assaulting a student. James Christopher White, 34, was arrested in February on charges of sexual assault of a minor and improper relationship between an educator and student while working as a wrestling coach and special education teacher in Victoria. The charges, which are under review by prosecutors, came after he admitted that he attempted to have sexual intercourse with a 16-year-old student in a hotel room during a school-related function, according to court records and officials from the Victoria County Sheriff’s Office. A more detailed background check on White would have revealed red flags: the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement, or TCOLE, revoked his peace officer and jailer licenses in 2012. The action came after he was terminated and dishonorably discharged for untruthfulness or insubordination from Mathis and Orange Grove police departments, according to records from all three agencies.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: “Personnel Search Committees” and the Screening Process: As for its actual search, the board could vote to create a personnel search committee. Such a committee, when formed with respect to an “executive level” position (such as a superintendent), is exempt in its entirety from the FOIA and its open meetings and notice/posting requirements. The appointment of such a personnel search committee is useful in that it protects the privacy rights of those being interviewed and avoids the need of the board to take official action in narrowing the field of candidates (even to the final recommended candidate) as part of the interview process. The FOIA also protects from disclosure any records of a personnel search committee which would reveal the identity of a candidate (without that candidate’s consent). . .Not all gatherings of a board committee ostensibly acting as a search committee will be considered exempt from the FOIA’s meetings and posting requirements. A personnel search committee is exempt from the FOIA’s requirements for only as long as it is engaging in activities protected by the search committee exception. Based upon the FOIA, the Freedom of Information Commission [“FOIC”] views the role of a personnel search committee for purposes of this FOIA’s exemption as limited to 1) reviewing resumes, 2) interviewing and screening candidates and 3) considering and recommending the selection and appointment of an individual for the position.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Local municipal staffers and attorneys are scrambling to read and understand the 600-page bill legalizing recreational marijuana before its Jan. 1, 2020 effective date. The bill that passed in the Illinois House on the last day of the legislative session in Springfield, Friday, May 31, was passed by the Illinois Senate just two days before. Gov. J.B. Pritzker is expected to sign the bill, but marijuana remains illegal at the federal level. The bill gives some control to local municipalities, including creating zoning regulations and limiting dispensary options for operating, along with allowing for some new tax revenue for local communities. “First we have to read the law thoroughly,” Glenview Village President Jim Patterson said. “You can have one sentence (buried in the bill) throw it all away.” Patterson said he fully expects village trustees to consider and act on the bill by October, before it takes effect. Niles Village Manager Steve Vinezeano said a Tuesday, June 11 village board meeting has been scheduled for village staffers to present details about the bill to Niles trustees and discuss options. Vinezeano said 52 percent of Niles residents voted in a recent referendum in favor of the state legalizing recreational marijuana. “That doesn’t mean they want a dispensary down the block.” Vinezeano said firefighters, police, Family Services and community development officials all have concerns.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: During a special Thursday afternoon meeting, the Clearlake City Council will consider applicants for a vacant council seat. The council will meet at 3 p.m. Thursday, June 6, in the council chambers at Clearlake City Hall, 14050 Olympic Drive. On May 9, Mayor Nick Bennett resigned as he prepared to move to South Dakota, as Lake County News has reported. At a May 13 special meeting, the council directed City Clerk Melissa Swanson to advertise the vacancy for appointment and accept applications with a June 4 deadline. The city has received six applications for the seat, which has a term ending in November 2020. Applicants are Cristina Azanza, the founder of a nonprofit, Azanza Inc.; David Claffey, a marketing and communications professional who serves on the city’s marketing committee; Desserrie Shaw, who has experience as a board member and president of the Konocti County Water District; Erin McCarrick, who owns cannabis companies Clearlake Ventures and Cara Farms and a consulting business, Madrone Strategies; Russell Perdock, the city’s former mayor who resigned last year to pursue the police chief’s job and now is director of community integration for Adventist Health Clear Lake; and Pattie Duke, a registered nurse case manager. Swanson’s report to the council said staff is recommending that the council interview the six applicants at Thursday’s meeting. The candidate they pick will be approved for the appointment by motion, majority vote and resolution. The appointee would then be given the oath and seated at the June 13 meeting, Swanson said.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Age discrimination may be against the U.S. labor laws, but I’ll bet you or someone you know has been on the wrong side of this form of discrimination in the workplace. In fact, nearly two out of three workers aged 45 and older have seen or experienced age discrimination on the job, according to an AARP workplace survey. So let’s face it: It’s real, and you need to know how to deal with it. As a career coach, I know firsthand that many professionals feel one of their greatest career challenges after age 40 is age discrimination. To help overcome this obstacle, I’ve developed several tips that have helped people of a certain vintage successfully navigate the job market.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Most people are aware that federal law bars discrimination on the job due to gender, race and religion, but they often don’t realize that it also covers current and former members of the military as well. With fewer Americans serving in the military today than in past decades, this kind of discrimination can be subtle, taking the form of assumptions that civilians make about military life and service. That could come from recruiters who ignore relevant job experience — like leading a caravan of military vehicles in the desert when hiring for a job driving a commercial truck. It could come in the form of an innocent-seeming question during a job interview about whether you suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after completing a tour in Afghanistan. Or it could be the more obvious refusal to reinstate you at your old job after regular service with the National Guard. Several federal laws aim to prevent those kinds of situations. Here’s a look at the laws that protect those who come back from their service as they reenter the workforce.)

— How Can You Tell if a Job Candidate Is Lying About Their Credentials? – Adam C. Uzialko
https://www.businessnewsdaily.com/11314-background-check-candidate-credentials.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: When employers don’t want to conduct candidate verification themselves or feel it would be better handled by a professional third party, there are background check services. These companies are available to screen candidates, usually for a per-candidate fee, and provide background check reports for the employer’s review. Background checks generally review criminal history at the federal and state level, as well as verify past employment and educational attainment. “Manual verification of job candidates, especially in high-volume situations, may be impractical,” Chancey said. “For best results, employers should consider partnering with a reliable background screening vendor. Look for a vendor whose screening platform is easy to use and takes out the hassle of verifying multiple candidates, integrates with other HR systems such as the applicant tracking system, and whose capabilities can be customized to the needs of your organization.”)

— How the Rural-Urban Divide Became America’s Political Fault Line Such a conflict isn’t unique to the U.S., but the consequences are far-reaching here. – Emily Badger
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/21/upshot/america-political-divide-urban-rural.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In the United States, where a party’s voters live matters immensely. That’s because most representatives are elected from single-member districts where the candidate with the most votes wins, as opposed to a system of proportional representation, as some democracies have. Democrats tend to be concentrated in cities and Republicans to be more spread out across suburbs and rural areas. The distribution of all of the precincts in the 2016 election shows that while many tilt heavily Democratic, fewer lean as far in the other direction. As a result, Democrats have overwhelming power to elect representatives in a relatively small number of districts — whether for state house seats, the State Senate or Congress — while Republicans have at least enough power to elect representatives in a larger number of districts. Republicans, in short, are more efficiently distributed in a system that rewards spreading voters across space. . .The median congressional district in America looks ideologically more Republican, Mr. Rodden finds (the median precinct in the chart also voted slightly Republican). And so Democrats have to find a way to win in those places, even as the progressive wing of the party is ascendant and lobbying for control of the party’s message. If Democrats hold on to some suburbs they recently flipped — a possibility as suburbia diversifies and as college-educated whites move toward the Democrats — Republicans could one day be as concentrated in rural areas as Democrats have been in cities. In that situation, one where Republicans pack their votes more tightly in rural America and the median suburban district becomes slightly Democratic, the urban party might actually start to benefit from geographic polarization. But there will still always be the Senate.)

https://www.nydailynews.com/opinion/ny-oped-liberals-must-call-out-all-kinds-of-hate-20190514-i2byqjlwrvbh3hpka7ghvmta3m-story.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: So let’s imagine that a group of white children had been captured on video calling for the beheading of Jewish kids. My fellow liberals would be up in arms, demanding a broader investigation of the incident and penalties for the people involved. But when it’s Muslim children, doing the same thing? Meh. Witness our blasé reaction to last month’s news in my hometown of Philadelphia, where students were seen reciting a revolutionary anthem often used by Islamist groups. Reading from a prepared text, one girl in the group says, “We will chop off their heads, and we will liberate the sorrowful and exalted Al-Aqsa Mosque.” That’s a reference to a holy site in Jerusalem, revered by Muslims and Jews alike. The video was cited repeatedly on Fox News and other conservative media outlets but made barely a blip on CNN, MSNBC and other left-leaning venues.)
