(FROM THE ARTICLE: A majority of both Republicans and Democrats say the 2016 election is a significant source of stress for them right now, according to a recent American Psychological Association poll. They should probably log off Facebook and Twitter. A new survey from the Pew Research Center suggests — in a result that will surprise precisely zero political reporters who tweet — that people don’t think social media are a particularly great form of political discourse. Full 59 percent of social media users say interacting with people they disagree with is more “stressful and frustrating,” while 35 percent say it’s more “interesting and informative.” And by an even more lopsided 64-29 margin, they say they actually find they have less in common with people they disagree rather than say they find more in common. These frustrations are — wait for it — bipartisan. Many more social media users also say the discussions there are less respectful, less civil and less policy-focused than say they are more respectful, civil and policy-focused. And about half (49 percent) say that they are angrier than other forums, while just 6 percent say they’re less angry. It’s not hard to look at these numbers and conclude that social media are playing a part when it comes to our increasing polarization in the United States. The numbers don’t prove it directly, but it does seem that many Americans find talking politics on Facebook and Twitter, at least, to be an experience that leaves them with less regard for the other side. What’s interesting about social media is that it actually exposes people to those alternate views in a way their personal lives may not. Just 23 percent of Facebook users and 17 percent of Twitter users say they mostly follow people with similar political views to their own. That might be more they can say for their personal lives, in which their friends and neighbors are increasingly likely to be like-minded, thanks to something political scientists call “sorting.” But that doesn’t mean people are going to like what those they disagree with are saying. In fact, if nothing else, this survey suggests it might be one of the worst ways to have a reasoned political discussion. And yet, it’s probably one of the few forms of real political dialogue many people are having.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: HUNTSVILLE, Ala.  An Alabama A&M University student decided to turn his on-campus dorm room into the headquarters of his donation-based food pantry.  “I noticed that there were some students that said they were going to bed hungry,” said Justin Franks. “So, I thought about it and said, ‘What can I give back to my community?'” Franks said he started the pantry on just $45. “I started with pretty much just noodles and Capri Suns and I had a few household products like tissue and water.” It’s now packed with items such as fruit juices, coups, canned food items, chips and instant noodles. Franks posted his venture on Facebook, and the story has since been shared hundreds of times. “I didn’t think it would get shared that much, but people really cared about our students and Alabama A&M University.” So far, Franks has helped nearly 100 students. Those in need are able to get up to three items twice a week. “To me, it just makes me feel like I’m blessing someone,” he said. “I’m a religious person and I feel like I can bless a student. Some nights, students will be like ‘Man, I really appreciate this because I didn’t have anything to eat.'”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: If GOP U.S. Sen. MARK KIRK, R-Ill., wasn’t always looking at the camera in the televised Springfield debate with U.S. Rep. TAMMY DUCKWORTH last week, well, there is an explanation. Due to his 2012 stroke, spokeswoman ELENI DEMERTZIS said, Kirk has lost complete vision in his left eye. At Sangamon Auditorium at the University of Illinois Springfield, Kirk and Duckworth were at a table in the middle of the stage, and questioners, including myself, were at a table on stage to their left. Kirk often was looking in our direction, but had to turn far enough to use his right eye to do so. The moment of the debate that got the most attention was when Duckworth talked about her family’s military history dating back to the Revolutionary War, and Kirk said, “I’d forgotten that your parents came all the way from Thailand to fight for George Washington.” After a bit of silence, and given the chance to respond, Duckworth said that it was her father’s side of the family whose service went back to the American revolution. I later asked for some family details, and MATT McGRATH, spokesman for Duckworth, said Duckworth’s father, FRANK, was American, and served in both the Marine Corps and Army. He worked in international development and met Duckworth’s mother, LAMAI, who is Thai of Chinese descent, in Thailand. Duckworth was born in Bangkok. Her father died in 2005, and her mother became a U.S. citizen in 1993, and lives with Duckworth, her husband BRYAN and their young daughter, in Hoffman Estates. Kirk apologized for his debate comment about Duckworth’s family, tweeting: “Sincere apologies to an American hero, Tammy Duckworth, and gratitude for her family’s service.” Duckworth responded on Twitter: “Thanks, Sen. Kirk. Let’s honor my family’s service — and your own — by sticking to the issues for the final week. See you Friday in Chicago.”  The candidates are scheduled to debate at 7 p.m. Friday on WLS-TV—ABC7 in Chicago.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: The United States may no longer be a white, Christian country. Based on research from Robert P. Jones, author of “The End of White Christian America,” The Atlantic published a video that shows how there’s been a decline in Americans who identify as white Christians in the last decade. His research shows that while 67 percent of Americans 65 years old or older identify as white Christians, only about 29 percent of people 18 to 29 feel the same. More so, Jones’ research shows that about 1 in 4 Americans today identify as religiously unaffiliated, a significant jump from the 1 in 10 who felt the same in the ’90s. According to Jones, Mitt Romney’s 2012 presidential run demonstrates how the lack of Christians have affected our nation. Though Romney had a significant amount of white evangelicals voting for him, it wasn’t enough to put him over the top so he could win the presidency. Jones said it was because there had been a decline over the years in that religious group who would have voted for him. But, the author pontificates that if Romney ran in 2004, there would have been enough white Christians in the country that could have secured him the White House. This trend has created something of a backlash, as Americans struggle to figure out their identity. Is America a Christian nation as we’ve often thought, or is it a country defined by its diversity? “People fight like that when they are losing a sense of place, a sense of belonging, and a sense of the country that they understand and love,” Jones said. “How do they re-engage in public life when they can’t be the majority?”)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Even weeks after her passing, conservative icon Phyllis Schlafly is suffering attacks from #NeverTrumpers and an activist judge. For what Schlafly’s son, Roger Schlafly, calls indecipherable reasons, low-rated Illinois Judge John B. Barberis has ordered Schlafly’s Eagle Forum to remove all pro-Trump articles which were posted to the group’s website after April 10, 2016. Schlafly spent the last year of her life supporting GOP nominee Donald Trump for the presidency. But she also spent it arguing with a small handful of board members of her own organization about that support. And now, in the weeks after her death, that small group of officers have taken Eagle Forum to court and have somehow succeeded in getting a judge to shut down the Eagle Forum political action organization Schlafly spent a lifetime building. All in an effort to eliminate information about the very candidate she fully supported. In the months before her passing, Phyllis fought off the small group of board members who tried to oust her from the very organization she built. And it was all because she supported Donald Trump against their wishes. In April she issued a video telling the world she was still in charge. But apparently the fight has now continued beyond her death. This month Judge Barberis issued an order filled with demands that Schlafly’s son, Roger, feels are if not illegal, at the very least un-American. The judge’s order seems to be compelling people not a party to the #NeverTrumpers’ lawsuit to do things. For instance, Roger was not named in any of the lawsuits brought against Eagle Forum by the handful of #NeverTrump board members, yet the judge’s order says that Roger must remove all pro-Trump items from the Eagle Forum website. Roger Schlafly, though, decided to take the whole website down and leave an explanation letter in its place because he can’t understand the order given by this #NeverTrump judge. The lawsuit is against Eagle Forum c4 but orders me personally to assist in transferring “Eagle Forum [c4] Property”. This is in spite of the fact that I am not a party to the case, and the court papers say that I am “not associated or affiliated with Eagle Forum [c4] in any way.” Roger also noted that the judge is demanding that he and others on the board refrain from advocating for any political positions as the #NeverTrump activists continue their lawsuit. I have never heard of any political advocacy organization being ordered not to express opinions on a web site. Not in the USA, anyway. I thought that the First Amendment prohibited that sort of thing. Roger goes on to say that the judge also told him he is not allowed to even talk to “third parties” about anything involving Eagle Forum. He then asks since when does any American need permission from a government to talk to a third-party about anything? He concludes explaining what he is doing with the site…  Complying with this order will not be easy. I am not sure exactly what was on the site on April 10. If I remove the pro-Trump articles, I will create dead links. If I explain the dead links, I might be accused of advocating something. I am reluctant to even post the court order, as that might be construed as advocating about litigation. I am not sure that the Eagle Forum c4 even has any property on the web site. Most of the site involves political works and activities of Phyllis Schlafly, and these have nothing to do with the plaintiffs in this lawsuit. I have tried to understand the their demands, but they have never even expressed any interest in the web site, as far as I know. Rolling back Phyllis Schlafly’s web site to purge her pro-Trump views is a dishonest and treacherous thing to do, and I refuse to do it, unless forced by the court. So I am shutting down the eagleforum.org web site for now. I am very sorry about this, and hope to have it back up when the legal issues are settled. So, who is this Judge John B. Barberis? He is the judge on the Illinois Third Judicial Circuit Court and is running to fill a vacancy on the Illinois Fifth District Appellate Court. But Barberis, running as a Republican, was not endorsed by the Illinois State Bar Association and was rated as “not recommended” in 2014.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Hillary Clinton holds not only a commanding 19-point lead over Donald Trump in Illinois according to a new poll, but also she has grabbed a solid lead over the reality TV star in a suburban DuPage battleground. An October 13, 2016 poll conducted by Illinois Public Opinion Strategies (IPOS) of 664 likely Illinois voters finds that Clinton has a 50.0%-31.5% statewide edge over Trump. Libertarian Gary Johnson is taking 5.8% of the vote and Green Jill Stein is eking out 1.1%. 11.6% are undecided. In 2012, when President Barack Obama defeated Mitt Romney 57.6%-40.7% in Illinois, Johnson, running on the Libertarian ticket then too, snagged only 1.1% and Stein, 0.6%. The new automated poll compares to a July 26 IPOS statewide survey of 824 likely voters that found that Clinton led Trump 49.2%-35.6%. Johnson took 4.3% and Stein had 1.6%. 9.3% were undecided. The survey had a +/- 3.5% margin of error. Clinton has merely solidified her lead statewide. But the former first lady has also established a firm advantage over Trump in the solidly Republican-held House district of appointed State Rep. David Olsen (R-Downers Grove), who earlier in the summer succeeded ex-State Rep. Ron Sandack (R-Downers Grove), taking an eight-point lead in this DuPage County battleground. An October 12 IPOS poll of 378 likely voters found Clinton edging Trump 44%-36%. In 2014, Bruce Rauner beat Governor Pat Quinn in this district 60.3% to 37.4%. Olsen faces Democrat and Downers Grove Village Commissioner Greg Hose on November 8. While Trump is getting thumped statewide by Clinton and in Olsen’s GOP district, Trump’s cratering candidacy has – so far – avoided crushing Republican comptroller Leslie Munger’s bid to win a full, four-year term against Democratic challenger and Chicago City Clerk Susana Mendoza. The October 13 survey shows that Munger is outperforming Trump statewide and leading Mendoza 41%-39%. Libertarian Claire Ball is taking only 2.2% and Green Tim Curtin, 2.0%. 15.6% of voters are undecided. Munger, who was appointed to her job in 2015 by Governor Bruce Rauner after incumbent Judy Baar Topinka died, is also outperforming Trump in Olsen’s House district. In the October 12 poll, Munger is decisively beating Mendoza – like a Republican should in a Republican district – 50.4% to 28.9%. Johnson is taking 6.8% and Stein, 1.6%. While Trump may be getting his clock cleaned and reassembled by Clinton statewide and in Olsen’s suburban DuPage district, he is having little discernible, negative impact on Munger’s down ballot comptroller contest. This polling phenomenon is also being played out around the country regarding down ticket fights. However, if Trump has a demoralizing impact on GOP voters and turnout sours, then the bottom could indeed fall out for Munger and all sorts of down ballot GOP candidates here – and everywhere. (FROM THE ARTICLE: Much has been written about the increasing proportion of the electorate that is made up of minorities: African-Americans, Latinos, Asians and others. While Republicans’ grassroots hostility to diversity makes life very difficult for the GOP at the presidential level, important and under-discussed transformations have impacted white voters as well. The share of noncollege-educated whites has been cut in half since 1980. When Ronald Reagan defeated Jimmy Carter, nearly two-thirds of the electorate was made up of noncollege-educated whites. By 2012, that number had shrunk to just 37 percent. Meanwhile, as minority participation has risen, white college graduates’ share of the electorate has remained stable, so that in 2012, white voters divided about evenly between college and noncollege graduates.  That dramatic change in educational attainment presents profound political implications. Pew’s recently published compendium of party identification data helps sort through the numbers. In 1992, whites without college experience were more likely to identify as Democrats than as Republicans by a 9-point margin. In the quarter-century since, party identification among noncollege whites was closely contested, with Democrats holding on to a few more in some years and Republicans edging ahead in others. Beginning in 2008, the GOP margin with noncollege whites increased substantially, reaching 26 points this year. Despite what some would have you believe, this is not wholly an effect of Donald Trump. While the GOP advantage reached its current zenith this year, it had been moving strongly in that direction for the past eight. At the same time, a wholly opposite process is at work among whites who have graduated from college. In 1992, whites with a college degree were even more Republican than whites without a degree were Democratic. College-educated whites identified with the Republican Party by an 11-point margin when Bill Clinton defeated George H.W. Bush. But, beginning in 2004, that gap narrowed substantially — today, Democrats enjoy a 1-point edge with college-educated whites. That margin is fueled, importantly, by those with post-graduate experience. What was an even split in 1992 has grown into a 12-point Democratic advantage among those with a post-graduate education. So while Republicans are, and have been, making gains with noncollege whites, they are suffering continuing — albeit smaller — defections from whites who hold a college degree. In the long run, that’s bad news for the GOP, because while whites continue to shrink as a proportion of the electorate, noncollege whites — Republicans’ real base — are shrinking, too. Over the last 20 years, the percent of whites with a bachelor’s degree or more increased at about two-thirds of a percentage point a year, or 2.7 points every four years. Before conservatives start yelling about the liberal academic elite, it is worth noting that there is significant controversy about the magnitude and mechanism of what happens to political attitudes on campus.)

— A dozen hikers busted while police escort Governor Rauner through Starved Rock  Despite a busy holiday weekend, there were no falls to report at Starved Rock State Park. Conservation Police Sgt. Phil Wire says they did hand out 27 tickets counting Saturday and Sunday at the park. Four of them were for having small amounts of pot while the rest of the tickets were either for alcohol or being caught off the trails. Governor Bruce Rauner and his wife hiked about five miles at Starved Rock Saturday according to Wire. While walking with the governor, police nabbed a dozen other hikers for being off the trails.
