https://www.illinoisreview.com/illinoisreview/2025/10/illinois-democrats-declare-war-on-ice-new-law-shields-illegal-aliens-not-citizens.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: In the early hours of Friday morning, Illinois Democrats pushed through one of the most extreme immigration bills in the country – a sweeping measure designed to block federal immigration enforcement and further cement Illinois’ status as a sanctuary state. The bill, House Bill 1312, passed after hours of emotional speeches according to Politico, from Democratic lawmakers, many of whom compared federal immigration agents to kidnappers and slave catchers. The legislation, which Gov. JB Pritzker is expected to sign, designates “safe zones” around schools, hospitals, and courthouses, and allows individuals to sue immigration officers for alleged violations of their “constitutional rights,” including false imprisonment or unlawful detention. “This bill is a statement on behalf of the legislature to say that what ICE is doing is unacceptable,” declared State Sen. Celina Villanueva (D-Chicago), one of the bill’s lead sponsors. Under the new law, federal immigration officers will face punitive damages if they conceal their identities, fail to wear body cameras, or use unmarked or out-of-state vehicles while conducting enforcement operations. It also prohibits civil immigration arrests inside courthouses or within 1,000 feet of them – effectively creating sanctuary zones where federal law cannot be enforced. Senate President Don Harmon (D-Oak Park) delivered a dramatic speech before the final vote, claiming to be “distraught and frightened” by federal enforcement actions. “I never thought I’d live in a world where masked federal employees, brandishing military-style weapons, would jump out of unmarked vans to kidnap and disappear people — U.S. citizens,” Harmon said. He alleged that federal agents are “targeting residents who look like” several Hispanic senators. House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch (D-Hillside) went even further, comparing the legislation to the 13th Amendment, which abolished slavery. “History will judge our actions in this moment, just as it did our predecessors,” he said. While Democrats framed the bill as a moral stand, critics say it is an outrageous attack on federal law enforcement and a dangerous invitation for lawlessness. By turning schools, hospitals, and courthouses into “safe zones” for illegal immigrants, Illinois Democrats have essentially declared that federal immigration law doesn’t apply here. For the last few years, Illinois families have watched as Democrats diverted billions of taxpayer dollars toward programs for illegal aliens – including free health care for noncitizens – while law-abiding residents struggle to pay their bills and access quality care. Under Gov. Pritzker, Illinois became the first state in the nation to offer free health insurance to undocumented immigrants aged 42 and older – a program that has ballooned in cost to more than a billion dollars. Now, with HB 1312, Democrats are doubling down on policies that reward those who break the law and punish those who enforce it. At a time when violent crime and drug trafficking are surging across the state, Illinois lawmakers are focused not on protecting citizens, but on shielding illegal immigrants from federal agents. With this legislation, Illinois Democrats have made their priorities clear: illegal aliens first, law-abiding citizens last. The message to working families could not be clearer – if you play by the rules, you’re on your own. But if you break the law, the state will protect you, fund you, and even help you sue the federal agents trying to uphold justice. As Gov. Pritzker prepares to sign HB 1312, Illinois continues to lead the nation not in economic growth, education, or public safety – but in radical policies that undermine the rule of law and reward illegal behavior. For a party that claims to defend democracy, Democrats in Illinois seem determined to dismantle it, one sanctuary bill at a time.)

https://www.chicagotribune.com/2025/10/30/illinois-lawmakers-push-to-tackle-constitutional-violations-in-immigration-raids-ban-courthouse-arrests/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Amid increased public calls for Illinois elected officials to more strongly push back against the Trump administration’s sometimes-violent crackdown on immigrants in the Chicago region, the Illinois General Assembly early Friday passed a bill to formally ban federal agents from arresting people near courthouses and allowing lawsuits if individuals’ rights have been violated in civil immigration arrests. The legislation came in response to what one of the bill’s sponsors, Democratic state Sen. Celina Villanueva of Chicago, described as “the reality of the pain and the cruelty and the inhumanity that’s being inflicted on my community, on my district, on the communities in this state — that are also American — for the simple fact of looking the way that I do.” “I’m going to fight back,” she said on the Senate floor late Thursday, shortly before the bill passed 40-18. The Illinois House passed the legislation 75-32 a little more than an hour later. While supporters applauded the bill’s passage, even its key sponsor, Senate President Don Harmon, called it “imperfect.” But he said Democratic lawmakers in Springfield felt the need to act, as state and local officials have often felt hamstrung in countering the federal government’s often-aggressive tactics. “I’m prepared for this law to be challenged, but I think we still have an obligation to try to do something,” Harmon, of Oak Park, told a committee hearing in Springfield Thursday. “There is no need for the same people who are charged with protecting our constitutional rights to violate our constitutional rights in the process.” Under the bill, individuals could sue officers for knowingly violating the state or U.S. Constitution during civil immigration enforcement. The bill would also codify a 1,000-foot “safe zone” around courthouses, free from civil arrests, in an attempt to limit potential disruptions to court activities. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Border Patrol activities in Chicago and the surrounding areas have come under increased scrutiny and criticism. In what the federal government has described as an initiative to deport the “worst of the worst” individuals who lack legal status, agents have repeatedly detained people first and sought information about them later, without immediate regard for citizenship or legal status. The bill came together in collaboration with House lawmakers, the state attorney general’s office and the governor’s office, Harmon said on the Senate floor. While the governor and lawmakers have used their bully pulpits to push back, and some legislators have at times taken an activist role themselves in opposition to the federal actions, the statehouse has little formal role in immigration policy. In a sign of lawmakers’ frustration with the federal agents’ tactics, damages under the lawsuit provision could go up due to various factors. They include whether the defendant wore a mask; used crowd control equipment like tear gas; failed to identify themselves as a law enforcement officer; used a vehicle without an Illinois license plate; or failed to turn on a necessary body camera — all behaviors advocates and Democratic lawmakers have accused immigration agents of since the start of “Operation Midway Blitz” under the administration of President Donald Trump. It doesn’t impede ICE from “doing its job lawfully,” Harmon told his colleagues on the Senate floor. But in the floor debate Thursday, Senate GOP Leader John Curran of Downers Grove called those aggravating factors for damages a form of overreach. “You are … teeing this up for the Supreme Court to set this aside. You’re actually making it easy on them,” Curran said. Violators who arrest individuals improperly at or near a courthouse would face civil damages for false imprisonment and $10,000 in statutory damages, according to the bill. A judge can also issue an order preventing arrest under the provision, according to the bill. “When witnesses or parties don’t come to court, it doesn’t just affect them. It affects all of us,” Villanueva said. A judge can also issue an order preventing arrests under the provision, according to the bill. In addition to the provisions on courts and private actions, the bill also asks hospitals, day care centers and higher education institutions to put policies on the books about how they would respond to the presence of federal immigration agents, following incidents of ICE activity at or near some of those locations across the Chicago area. It would also largely prohibit hospitals, day care centers and higher education institutions from disclosing the immigration status of patients, clients and students. Hospitals would be fined $500 per day for noncompliance if they fail to meet the deadlines for developing their policies during the first quarter of next year. The higher education provisions on immigration status could be enforced through private lawsuits. And violations of the day care policy requirement would result in a licensing violation, according to the bill. Democratic state Sen. Omar Aquino, of Chicago, 2nd District, sponsored the day care provisions after his child’s day care center went into lockdown because of nearby immigration enforcement activity, he said. “Our kids were fine, but families were in fear because they didn’t know what to do,” Aquino said. “Here in the state, we must do something to make sure that no family feels that way. The package put forward this week doesn’t include a ban on masks for federal officers, as California enacted, or any expansions of Illinois’ existing law that generally bans local law enforcement from cooperating on civil immigration actions. At a subject matter hearing on the legislation Thursday, representatives from local law enforcement pushed back on parts of the legislation, including the private right of action for constitutional violations, over concerns that local officers could get swept up. “There’s going to be frivolous litigation that will be filed against state and local law enforcement officers,” even if it’s eventually thrown out, said Jim Kaitschuk, executive director of the Illinois Sheriffs’ Association. Pritzker, for his part, on Thursday in his ceremonial Springfield office, called on top federal immigration officials, including Border Patrol boss Greg Bovino, to pause their activities for the Halloween weekend. “Mr. Bovino, your operation has sown fear and division and chaos among law-abiding residents in our communities,” Pritzker said. “No child in America should have to go trick-or-treating in fear that they might be confronted with armed federal agents and have to inhale tear gas.” At a news conference in Gary, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem dismissed Pritzker’s call for the Halloween pause. “The fact that Gov. Pritzker is asking for that is shameful and I think unfortunate that he doesn’t recognize how important the work is that we do to make sure we’re bringing criminals to justice and getting them off our streets — especially when we’re going to send all of our kiddos out on the streets and going to events and enjoying the holiday season. We want to make sure that they’re safe,” she said.)

POLITICO ILLINOIS
— Illinois lawmakers early this morning approved sweeping legislation designed to curb federal immigration enforcement within the state — a move that follows Gov. JB Pritzker’s warnings about an increasingly aggressive federal campaign targeting Chicago-area communities. The 12:40 a.m. vote capped a busy last day of the General Assembly session in which lawmakers also passed bills to expand clean-energy projects and lower costs for consumers, and fund public transit systems across the Chicago region — “The transformation bill,” as state Rep. Kam Buckner called it. That vote came just before the House wrapped at 2:35 a.m. The Senate wrapped up even later. About the immigration enforcement bill: It designates “safe zones” around schools, hospitals and courthouses, and allows Illinois residents to sue immigration agents who violate their constitutional rights, including for false imprisonment or unlawful detention. “This bill is a statement on behalf of the legislature to say that what ICE is doing is unacceptable,” said Democratic Sen. Celina Villanueva, one of the bill’s sponsors. Senate President Don Harmon delivered an emotional speech before the final vote. “I am distraught and frightened,” he said. “I never thought I’d live in a world where masked federal employees, brandishing military-style weapons, would jump out of unmarked vans to kidnap and disappear people — U.S. citizens. And today, those people are targeting residents who look like Senator (Omar) Aquino, Senator (Celina) Villanueva, Senator (Karina) Villa, Senator (Cristina) Castro, Senator Javier Cervantes and Senator (Graciela) Guzman.” The bill allows for punitive damages against immigration agents who conceal their identities, fail to wear body cameras, or use unmarked or out-of-state vehicles. It also bans civil immigration arrests inside courthouses or within 1,000 feet of them and requires schools, hospitals and child-care facilities to adopt protocols for responding to enforcement actions. Harmon expects the bill to face challenges. “That doesn’t mean it’s not the right thing to do,” he told lawmakers. And House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch likened the legislation’s importance to the 13th Amendment abolishing slavery. “History will judge our actions in this moment, just as it did our predecessors,” he said. Republicans fiercely opposed the measure, calling it unconstitutional and dangerous. The bill “goes too far,” argued state Rep. Patrick Windhorst, echoing state Sen. Andrew Chesney, who said it would “tie the hands” of law enforcement. And state Rep. John Cabello, another Republican, said the measure sends a message to police officers that “you could be next,” referring to the provision allowing lawsuits against federal agents.)

— Immigration: The Impending Inferno
https://www.americanthinker.com/articles/2025/10/immigration_the_impending_inferno.html
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Biden administration opened the border, allowing millions of unvetted foreign nationals to enter the country illegally. Biden may not have comprehended the extent of this policy but the figurative politburo that operated the autopen fully understood the scope, scale, and repercussion of their actions. Democrat politicians walk the party line contrived by this politburo. This is clarified by the efforts of Democrat mayors and governors to keep the millions that illegally entered the country safely ensconced in their sanctuary cities and states. Maintenance of these sanctuaries comes at a high cost. The open border attracted criminal aliens like moths to a flame. Stories of murder, rape, child molestation, deadly DUI driving, prostitution, and drug trafficking are so numerous they have become cliche. Newsweek estimates illegal immigration costs taxpayers $150 billion annually. Why do Democrats defend a policy that presents so much danger at such great expense to the American people? Many Democrats don’t consider illegal entry into the country to be criminal behavior. Kamala Harris said, “An undocumented immigrant is not a criminal.” Be assured, though, that if illegal aliens were entering the country clamoring to support conservative causes, Democrats would insist that all entrants possess proper identification and carefully follow the laws of the United States.  Behind the gentle façade that Democrats expose to the public lies a political motivation. The number of House representatives that states send to Congress is based on the state’s population. The U.S. Census has traditionally counted individuals in the country regardless of citizenship status. During his first term, President Trump changed this in a memorandum saying, “For the purpose of the reapportionment of representatives following the 2020 Census, it is the policy of the United States to exclude from the apportionment base aliens who are not in a lawful immigration status under the Immigration and Nationality Act.” Biden revised Trump’s immigration policies and made sure illegal aliens were included in the 2020 Census.  Blue state governors and mayors attract illegal aliens to their sanctuaries with promises of cash, health care, food, and shelter. The more illegal immigrants that reside in a state, the more representatives the state will receive. Electoral votes are based on the number of representatives a state has, so presidential elections are also impacted. Democrats will admit illegal aliens, verse them in liberal activism, and make them citizens who vote for their Democrat sponsors. In his farewell address, President Washington warned of a dangerous political faction attempting, “to subvert the power of the people and to usurp for themselves the reins of government”.  The American people elected President Trump to defend the republic from the Democrats’ subversive scheme. During the 2024 campaign, Trump promised the largest deportation effort in U.S. history.  Democrats now fight the government to keep their scheme in place and bring it to fruition. New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy is “willing to fight to the death” to protect illegal aliens in his state. Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker draws moral equivalence between Trump’s immigration policies and Hitler sending Jews to death camps. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz called ICE agents, “a modern day Gestapo.” These governors and a plethora of other Democrat politicians are toeing the party line.  The politburo ordered the border open and allowed millions of aliens into the country.  Democrats spent hundreds of billions of dollars to attract these aliens even though they overwhelmed the legal and social infrastructure of their states. Yet one of the primary reasons for Democrats’ loss to Trump was their inane immigration policy. After expending huge sums of money and political capital, Democrats are now using all available means to keep illegal aliens in their sanctuaries. ICE and other federal agents enforcing immigration law find themselves in difficult situations. Democrats have threatened to release an app that tracks the movement of ICE agents.  Blue state politicians are not only undermining ICE but call on their constituents to actively interfere with the work of federal agencies. This is obstruction of justice. More seriously, Democrats are inviting liberal activists to engage in violent behavior to assure illegal aliens remain in their states. A cross-sectional group that has worn Che t-shirts and clutched Mao’s Little Red Book believing that “political power grows out of the barrel of a gun,” while visions of the Weather Underground dance in their heads is a group willing to do whatever it takes to advance the cause.  Far left groups search for reasons to launch a revolution. When Democrat politicians paint Trump as a fascist who will suspend the 2028 election and make himself king, leftist lunatics will resolve the matter with violence. At least two attempts have been made to assassinate Trump.  Charlie Kirk, the bright future of the conservative movement, was killed by an assassin who etched “hey, fascist! CATCH!” on bullet casings found with the gun used to kill him. Mexican drug cartels have placed bounties on the heads of ICE agents. A Minnesota man was recently arrested for posting an offer of $45,000 for the death of Attorney General Pam Bondi on the internet. Radical leftists have attacked ICE facilities all over the country. The John Brown Gun Club is a Marxist organization dedicated to the proposition of revolution. After Kirk’s assassination, the Club’s Washington DC branch advertised with a flyer reading, “Hey, fascist! Catch” to attract new members. Willem van Spronsen, a member of the Puget Sound branch, was killed in Seattle in 2019 while attacking an ICE detention facility with Molotov cocktails, armed with a semiautomatic rifle.  Van Spronsen proudly proclaimed, “I am antifa.” Leftist groups will riot against any version of oppression anyone can conjure. Last year it was Palestine, this year immigration, who knows what comes next?  They are the gasoline that leftist politicians, educators, and media have distilled.  A cadre of Democrat politicians play with fire, striking matches as they dance blithely around their volatile followers. The basis of our political system is the rule of law. Enforcement of immigration law is the responsibility of the federal government. Democrats have thumbed their noses at the law and demand that Trump do the same. Trump will enforce the law because it is the right thing to do and enforcement fulfills a promise he made to the American people. It is likely Democrats will continue to ratchet up the pressure. They will either fan the flames of violence or ignite the inferno of insurrection. Their dance continues.  The matches they strike are in the air.)
— “Walking nightmare” is what President Trump’s White House Chief of Staff, Stephen Miller, called AOC after she spewed a nonsensical word salad calling him “short.”  Miller is five-foot-ten, and looks like a kick-your-butt-Bruce-Willis character from one of the RED movies. Recently Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) explained her weirdo-dislike for men she calls “short”, even though they are taller than her.  She hurled insults at Steven Miller saying, “Laugh at them.  Steven Miller is a clown.  I’ve never seen that guy in real life, but he looks like he’s like, four-ten.  And he looks like he is angry about the fact that he is four-ten.”  What a bizarre rambling.

COLLEGE RECRUITER
— 20 most popular jobs upon graduation for those with business administration / management majors. DD: When I graduated from NIU with a bachelor’s degree in management when I was 21 in 1970, I wanted a career in the automotive industry. But potential employers saw me as being draft bait. They did not believe that my application for a financial hardship draft deferment would be approved. Consequently, I took the only job offer that I got — Retail Sales Manager for the Chicago Heights Firestone Store. The job did not really require a college degree. Advancement opportunities were bleak. The store manager disapproved of my demographics. Consequently, I accepted a job offer from Oldsmobile. But Oldsmobile withdrew that job offer saying that it had just agreed to stop hiring Whites to settle an EEOC complaint. My store manager rudely fired me because I had accepted that job offer. I had to have a job. Consequently, I accepted a job offer from IRS. Surprisedly, my Firestone Store manager offered me a part-tine job pumping gasoline which I took and held until he fired me again at the end of 1972.

FROM THE ARTICLE: The Crete Police Department said multiple individuals from a construction crew near Berkshire and Stafford were detained Monday by federal immigration enforcement officers. RLM Underground construction manager Shawn Davis said Wednesday about four to five people were detained between 10:30 and 11 a.m. from his construction crew, which he subcontracted from another company. The crew was drilling conduit to install surf internet, but construction was halted after the workers were arrested. Davis said his company, along with another company on the job, Evolve Telecom, brought in additional workers from their company’s Midwest branches to continue the work on Tuesday. Some workers lived locally and others had to travel into town, he said. Crete police said in a statement information was received and verified from workers that several members of the crew were taken into custody by ICE agents. Officials also said the Police Department was contacted by several residents Monday regarding ICE sightings and activity within the village. Police said officers contacted witnesses and gathered information related to these reports and found several of the reported sightings were either untrue or couldn’t be substantiated. Crete officials also said the Police Department was never contacted by ICE and did not have notice of or assist in this operation. They noted Illinois law enforcement agencies are prohibited by the Illinois Trust Act from conducting or assisting in immigration only enforcement. Crete police also said Illinois law enforcement can only assist ICE if a valid warrant exists, probable cause of a criminal act (other than immigration status) was committed or protection of ICE agents who are victims of crime. “The Crete Police Department understands the sensitive nature of these matters and wants to assure the public that we are committed to being transparent in our role and the information we have regarding these encounters,” reads the statement. “The Crete Police Department is dedicated to communicating and sharing information with all residents, organizations, and businesses within our community.”

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Republicans board members said they support due process or fair treatment, but described the resolution as “political theater,” noting that the county has no jurisdiction over immigration. “It’s sad that we have to waste our time today on this resolution that has no bearing to change anything or make any difference in the everyday lives of our residents,” said board member Jim Zay, a Republican from Carol Stream. Zay left Tuesday’s board meeting with fellow Republicans Cindy Cronin Cahill and Kari Galassi, just as a vote was being called on the resolution. Board member Brian Krajewski, also a Republican, left the meeting shortly after commenting on the resolution, saying he had an appointment to get to. The measure ultimately passed 12-1, with Republican Sam Tornatore joining Democrats in supporting the resolution. Grant Eckhoff, a Wheaton Republican, cast the only dissenting vote. Before Tuesday’s meeting, Eckhoff had suggested changes to the resolution to include statements related to crime and undocumented immigrants, noting that entering the country without permission is illegal and suggesting that if people do not like immigration laws that they work to change them. Eckhoff, who did not present his proposed suggestions at Tuesday’s meeting, said adopting the resolution steps into federal issues that are out of the county’s authority.)

The legislation, sponsored by state Rep. It would also allow a public official to use their campaign fund to pay for personal security and security upgrades to their home, including security systems, cameras, walls, fences and other physical improvements.

— One agency (GAO) can push back on Trump — but probably not for long. The Government Accountability Office is Congress’s watchdog. In two months, the president gets to nominate its new leader. DD: If Gingrich had reformed GAO instead of gutting it, there would be no need for DOGE.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2025/10/27/trump-shutdown-gao/
(FROM THE ARTICLE: President Donald Trump has used the federal shutdown to seize control of spending from Congress and mold much of the government to his liking. Now the lone agency with the power to push back on those moves might be running out of time to try it. The agency’s leader, Comptroller General Gene Dodaro, has about two months left in his term, and Trump will nominate his replacement, potentially scuttling some of the Government Accountability Office’s most forceful attempts at oversight — including by taking the White House to court if necessary. The agency retained a law firm to evaluate whether the White House was breaking federal laws governing spending and to prepare for a potential legal challenge — though officials have not decided whether to pursue a case, according to two people familiar with Dodaro’s thinking, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to share details from private conversations. “They are looking at everything,” said one of the people. Now the White House is poised to defang the agency in the middle of the shutdown and the fight over constitutional powers, simply by appointing an ally as its new boss. When Dodaro’s term ends Dec. 29, congressional leaders will suggest to Trump a list of successors, though Trump can disregard the recommendation and send up his own choice for Senate confirmation. The Trump administration has claimed much of GAO’s work — and the agency itself — is illegitimate. Russell Vought, the White House budget director and architect of much of the administration’s shutdown strategy, said it “shouldn’t exist.” Congressional Republicans tried to slash GAO’s funding in this round of government spending negotiations and attempted to block the agency from suing the Trump administration on behalf of Congress. But the agency has taken on more prominence in recent months. A federal appeals court in August held that only GAO had the standing to sue over violations of spending laws, cutting out the groups that claimed harm from Trump’s decisions. Other federal courts that have considered related cases have not made similar determinations. “If Trump nominates the next comptroller general — I don’t want to make a political thing out of it, but his track record about caring about oversight and independent evaluations is not terribly strong,” said Henry Wray, a former associate general counsel and ethics counselor for GAO. “GAO is really the only truly fully independent source of executive branch oversight in government.” The government shutdown, well into its fourth week, presented a novel window for Trump to remake much of the federal government. He called the closure of many federal agencies an “opportunity” delivered to him on a “silver platter” to rid the government of “Democrat agencies” and lay off thousands of federal employees, though courts have blocked some of the dismissals he has attempted. And while congressional Democrats’ main demand in the shutdown talks is to preserve pandemic-era Affordable Care Act subsidies, they’ve also insisted that Trump drop attempts to impound funds, or that GOP lawmakers agree to strengthen provisions written into bill text that mandate the White House spend what Congress tells it to. Shutdowns are unique tests for the balance of power between the branches. With no spending laws in effect, the president has broader latitude than usual to redirect funds that preserve vital government functions, though such power is not unlimited. Long before the shutdown, the Trump administration had attempted to assert even greater authority. GAO determined this year that Trump and Vought blocked funds from going to programs that Congress had required by law, a concept called impoundment that is banned under a 1974 law.  The agency investigated 13 spending maneuvers by the administration and found six violations. “Once enacted,” GAO wrote in its investigation of an impoundment of Department of Homeland Security funds in September, “an appropriation is a law like any other, and the President must implement it by ensuring that appropriated funds are obligated and expended prudently during their period of availability unless and until Congress enacts another law providing otherwise.” Trump and key advisers like Vought say that the funding levels Congress sets are a ceiling, not a floor, and that the president can choose not to spend as much as lawmakers have ordered. Republican leaders in Congress have generally gone along with that interpretation. But Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine), chairwoman of the powerful Appropriations Committee, last month encouraged GAO to sue the White House. No decisions have been made. “GAO’s role in the [Impoundment Control Act] is to support Congress by providing information on the status of funds, issuing legal decisions and considering options for release of funds Congress has appropriated,” GAO General Counsel Edda Emmanuelli Perez said in a statement. “In considering whether to file a lawsuit, GAO would communicate with Congress on the available options and provide a 25 day formal notification as required by the ICA.” The tussle between the executive and legislative branches does not inherently require GAO’s intervention — if Congress stands up more aggressively for its powers, experts say. Lawmakers could publicly push back on the administration to pressure it to stop impoundments or to strictly adhere to Congress’s intent when making spending decisions during the shutdown. “If on a bipartisan basis, Congress would come together, at least a majority of members of Congress come together, and say, ‘The power of the purse is ours and here’s what that means,’ I think that would go a long way toward preventing the White House from continuing to give Congress a runaround when it comes to appropriated funding,” said Faith Williams, a program director at the Project on Government Oversight, a nonpartisan open-government organization.)

DD: By way of contrast, I did not start taking graduate evening accounting courses until I was 27. I did take and pass the CPA examination on my first attempt until I was 30. I did not earn a master’s degree in accounting until I was 31. I did not take and pass the Certified Internal Auditor examination on my first attempt until I was 32. I did not become a licensed CPA until I was 32. By then, even though I had worked for IRS for almost 9 years and for GAO for more than a year, the accounting profession viewed me as being too old to have a successful career in accounting. The profession would not have done that if I had been a minority or a female.
https://kanecountyconnects.com/article/KaneCountyStatesAttorney-Interns-IllinoisBar
(FROM THE ARTICLE: Two bright legal minds who began their journeys as interns in the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office (SAO) will soon take the next step in their careers, this time as licensed attorneys serving the same office where they got their start. On November 5, Holly Kruckenberg and Amelia O’Neal will be sworn into the Illinois Bar at an admission ceremony that also marks their first official court appearance as attorneys. Both began as Illinois Supreme Court Rule 711 interns, gaining real courtroom experience under the supervision of veteran Assistant State’s Attorneys. It’s a  program designed to prepare future prosecutors for the challenges and rewards of public service. “Our intern program which employs these 711 law students is an essential part of how we train the next generation of attorneys,” said State’s Attorney Jamie Mosser. “We’re proud to give law students the opportunity to develop practical skills, gain courtroom experience, and see firsthand the importance of public service. It’s incredibly rewarding to watch these interns grow into capable young lawyers, and we’re thrilled that two of them have now passed the bar and will be joining our office as Assistant State’s Attorneys.” Holly Kruckenberg, a 2025 graduate of Northern Illinois University College of Law, served as a 711 intern in the SAO for two and a half years. Now assigned to the Kane Branch Court, she handles traffic and criminal misdemeanor cases. One of her proudest moments was securing a jury trial conviction for Battery after the jury deliberated for less than 15 minutes. “I chose to stay at the SAO to ensure justice remains fair, fearless, and for everyone,” Kruckenberg said. “I believe in a justice system that protects the vulnerable, holds offenders accountable, and preserves the rule of law for all.” Amelia O’Neal, who graduated summa cum laude from NIU College of Law and served as President of the Juvenile and Family Law Association, has been with the SAO since 2023. She currently serves in the Elgin Branch Court, where she handles traffic and general misdemeanors. For O’Neal, mentorship has been the highlight of her experience. “I’m extremely grateful for the seasoned ASAs who have taken me under their wing,” she said. O’Neal said she was drawn to State’s Attorney Mosser’s emphasis on rehabilitation over retribution. “That philosophy reflects the kind of prosecutor I want to be, firm but fair, focused on outcomes that build safer communities.” Both Kruckenberg and O’Neal highlight the success of the Kane County State’s Attorney’s 711 Program, which continues to open doors for aspiring attorneys committed to public service.)

https://texasinsider.org/articles/democrats-scraping-the-bottom-of-the-barrel-for-candidates
(FROM THE ARTICLE: The Democrats are really reaching into the bottom of the barrel in a desperate search for political candidates these days. The daily headlines have this column almost writing itself. In the Commonwealth of Virginia, we have the recent revelations of Democratic candidate for attorney general, Jay Jones, sending text messages to a colleague in 2022 wishing that someone would put “two bullets” in the head of then-Republican Speaker of the House of Delegates, Todd Gilbert. Jones went on to say that Gilbert and his wife were raising their two toddlers to be “little fascists,” that Gilbert was a “POS” whose grave he wished to “piss on,” and that he wished one of Gilbert’s children would die in his mother’s arms. He could be my state’s next chief law enforcement officer. Then, in the state of New Jersey, we have Democratic gubernatorial candidate Rebecca Michelle “Mikie” Sherrill facing questions over the circumstances of the discipline she received while a Naval Academy midshipman, which reportedly prevented her from walking with her class at graduation. Ms. Sherrill, who serves as a congresswoman from New Jersey, apparently graduated from Annapolis and went on to serve as a Navy helicopter pilot. Her military service was honorable, and perhaps whatever her infraction was — apparently a cheating scandal involving a number of midshipmen on an engineering exam — should not be disqualifying for the governorship. However, the voters of New Jersey are entitled to make that decision based on a full airing of the evidence. To date, Sherrill has refused to release her disciplinary records from the Academy, which would go a long way toward clearing the air. As they say in Washington, it’s not the crime – it’s the cover-up. As long as she refuses to release the records, the issue remains a cancer on her campaign. Ms. Sherrill had to have known that this issue lurking in her background would likely come back to haunt her campaign for governor, given the harsh light of a gubernatorial election in a major state. Perhaps her prior successful campaigns for Congress convinced her the Academy scandal was behind her. The opposition research, however, for the governorship of the Garden State, which has been hotly contested in recent years, is likely much more robust than the one in a less well-funded congressional contest. Another Democratic candidate for a powerful seat is in the glare of the Klieg lights. This time it is Bernie Sanders-endorsed Marine Corps veteran Graham Platner, who is vying for the Democratic nomination to replace the U.S. senator from Maine, Susan Collins, in that state’s 2026 Senate race. Mr. Platner was discovered to have posted a number of things on Reddit that haven’t aged very well. When you’re running in a statewide race to be Maine’s next U.S. senator, for example, it’s probably best not to have posted online that rural Mainers are “actually” racist and stupid, as the Washington Post reported Mr. Platner to have written in 2020. The Post also reported that Mr. Platner had described himself as a “Communist” on the Reddit platform. Now, I know that the Democratic Party’s “New Left” has taken a hard turn toward Karl Marx, but even New York’s radical mayoral candidate, Zohran Mamdani, tries to distance himself from the Communist label. I can’t imagine that the denizens of the Pine Tree State are ready to embrace a self-avowed Communist. But things really veered toward darkness when it was revealed that Mr. Platner had the famed Nazi symbol of a skull-and-bones known as the Totenkopf (Death’s Head) tattooed on his chest. In what had to be one of the most disingenuous political spin jobs ever, Mr. Platner claimed not to have realized it was a Nazi symbol when he was in the Corps and had himself inked while in Croatia with some buddies. Problem is, Mr. Platner reportedly told a friend in D.C. ten years ago, “Oh, this is my Totenkopf.” Even Platner’s former political director, Genevieve MacDonald, who resigned last week over the disaster, said, “He’s not an idiot, he’s a military history buff.” Even worse than the political spin was perhaps the worst tattoo clean-up job ever, in which Mr. Platner had some shlock tattoo artist stick some legs and a dog’s head on the skull, now telling Vanity Fair the tattoo is “a Celtic knot with a dog.” Okaaayyyy… As my brother, Jim, hilariously said to me, it looks like a tick that was irradiated at Chernobyl. Get a lot of popcorn as the Democratic Party scrambles to field candidates over the next year or two. The party is in a bad way and scraping the barrel’s bottom. Several decades ago, I was an investigator for a prominent D.C. investigative firm that was hired by politicians to do opposition research on their opponents. One prominent Democrat considering a run for president had us do a self-due diligence of him in which I was involved. Smart man. Always know what the opposition can find out about you before the opposition does. Our client didn’t run for the presidency.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin issued a statement Sunday about a separate incident in Chicago, saying, “On October 25, 2025, Border Patrol conducted an operation that resulted in the arrest of, a criminal illegal alien from Mexico, who has previously been arrested for assault. During the operations Border Patrol agents were surrounded and boxed in by a group of agitators. Federal law enforcement issued multiple lawful commands and verbal warnings, all of which were ignored. During the operation, two U.S. citizens were arrested for assaulting and impeding a federal officer. To safely clear the area after multiple warnings and the crowd continuing to advance on them, Border Patrol had to deploy crowd control measures. “Our officers are facing a 1000% increase in assaults against them as they put their lives on the line to arrest murderers, rapists, abusers, and gang members. Secretary Noem’s message to the rioters is clear: you will not stop us or slow us down. ICE and our federal law enforcement partners will continue to enforce the law. And if you lay a hand on a law enforcement officer, you will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”)

AMERICAN THINKER
— America’s crisis isn’t primarily about policy.  It’s about identity.  We have forgotten who we are. A nation that once understood rights as God-given now treats them as government-granted privileges.  Our children are taught what to think, not how to think.  Our politics has devolved into tribal warfare because we’ve abandoned the moral order that transcends party loyalty.  And government expands in direct proportion to our spiritual poverty. The remedy won’t come from Washington.  It requires recovering three foundational truths our Founders knew but we have forgotten.

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Democratic Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson erupted at a reporter on Friday after they used the term “illegal aliens” during a press briefing, slamming the phrase as “racist” and “nasty.” In a video posted Saturday to the official Instagram account of the Chicago mayor, a reporter asked Johnson about a report on city spending related to “illegal aliens” in Chicago that he was allegedly required to file with the White House. Johnson immediately pushed back on the language. “We don’t have illegal aliens,” Johnson said to the reporter. “I don’t know if that’s from some sort of sci-fi message that you wish you’ve had… Well listen, the legal term for my people were slaves. You want me to use that term too? So, look, let’s just get the language right. We’re talking about undocumented individuals that are human beings.” Johnson added that he would not “accept that type of racist, nasty language to describe human beings.” The blue city’s mayor then shifted to discuss his administration’s spending priorities, touting his $16.7 billion budget that he said invests in education, transportation, housing, environmental justice, youth employment and community safety. “And we are going to challenge the ultra-wealthy to pay their fair share,” Johnson said. Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., then chimed in to back Johnson’s remarks, arguing that immigration violations are not criminal offenses. “It is very important that people in Illinois and across the country understand the immigration system is a civil system,” Jayapal said. “Undocumented presence in the United States is not a criminal offense. And so thank you for the clarification on language.” Johnson has previously been outspoken in his defense of Chicago’s immigration policies and in his criticism of President Donald Trump’s approach to crime and border enforcement.  Last month, the Chicago mayor delivered a fiery news conference condemning Trump’s crackdown on crime. “Jails and incarceration and law enforcement is a sickness that has not led to safe communities,” Johnson said at the time. Last week, three illegal immigrants and six U.S. citizens were arrested in the Chicago area in what the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) dubbed “one of the most violent days” of Operation Midway Blitz. Operation Midway Blitz was launched last month in honor of Katie Abraham, who was killed in a drunk driving hit-and-run allegedly caused by Julio Cucul-Bol, an illegal immigrant from Guatemala. DHS stated the goal of the operation was to “target criminal illegal aliens terrorizing Americans in sanctuary Illinois.” The Chicago mayor’s office and Rep. Pramila Jayapal did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.)

https://www.wsj.com/opinion/the-left-attacks-the-rule-of-law-bc1dedb1
(FROM THE ARTICLE: President Trump awarded my friend Charlie Kirk a posthumous Presidential Medal of Freedom this month. As a country, we need to honor Charlie’s memory, face some hard facts and take action. Before it’s too late. Charlie’s assassination forced Americans to confront a dark truth: Leftist extremists are waging war on the rule of law, liberty and our way of life. Terrorists, gang members and rioters routinely attack federal law-enforcement officers working to reimpose order after years of chaos under the Biden administration. Our officers have been shot at and assaulted. They have faced death threats, doxxing and confrontations at their homes. Spotter networks in Chicago linked to street gangs and Mexican cartels track the movements of officers for Customs and Border Protection as well as Immigration and Customs Enforcement, relaying locations and enabling ambushes during routine enforcement operations. This month a member of the Latin Kings gang was charged with putting a bounty on the life of Border Patrol Commander at Large Gregory Bovino. The illegal alien charged with placing that bounty was arrested, has pleaded not guilty, and will face justice. The incident shows the enormous risk law-enforcement officers face to make our cities safe again. A self-styled anarchist website in Portland, Ore., encouraged supporters to use high-powered laser pointers to bring down federal helicopters in the area. In Dallas an anti-ICE terrorist opened fire on an ICE facility intending to kill officers. Instead, he killed two detainees. In Alvarado, Texas, Antifa terrorists ambushed ICE officers at a detention facility, wounding a local police officer in the neck. Despite all this, pro-crime politicians seem intent on dismissing the violence, even encouraging it by stripping protections from law-enforcement officers. That is why our officers wear masks. Protecting their identity is one way to prevent bad actors from targeting their homes and threatening their families. Some politicians want to deprive officers of this protection, knowing that doing so puts their lives in grave danger. They tell local police to stand down while federal law-enforcement officers fight for their lives. California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a law purporting to ban federal law enforcement from wearing masks on duty. Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker has threatened federal officers with prosecution for enforcing immigration law. Antifa continues its attacks on law enforcement and innocent civilians in Portland, while city “leaders” hamstring the local police. I met with Portland Mayor Keith Wilson last month to request more security measures for our law-enforcement officers who have been under attack for months in his city. Mr. Wilson responded by publishing an op-ed attacking federal law-enforcement officers for doing the job he refuses to do.)

(FROM THE ARTICLE: Due process protects federal employees’ right to fair procedures in personnel matters. It generally means employees get written notice of a proposed action and a chance to respond. Adverse actions—specific personnel actions like suspensions, pay cuts or removals—trigger these due process rights, which ensure fairness in the workplace and protect employees from undue harm or discrimination.)

LUMINA FOUNDATION
— America is slipping in higher education. The slide starts long before college. American students are less likely to complete college on time, and more likely to leave school burdened by debt without a degree. DD: I was able to work my way through college and graduate debt-free with a bachelor’s degree in business from NIU when I was 21 years old in 1970 owning a 1969 Dodge Charger SE. Because of much higher college costs today, I doubt that I could do that today if I was young today. Further, I doubt that I could buy the cars that I did. I bought a new 1966 Pontiac Tempest Sprint with the money I earned washing dishes for the minimum wage for 18 months. I bought a new 1968 Oldsmobile 442 with the money I earned delivering mail for 13 months. I bought a new 1969 Dodge Charger SE with the money I earned delivering mail for 12 months.
