The protesters are members of Indivisible DuPage’s “visibility brigade,” a group that brings the organization’s advocacy into public spaces. Aimee Renkes, the brigade’s leader, noted that the group also posts signs on the bridge over Interstate 88 weekly, holds rallies and supports other protests. This past winter, they were wardens — volunteers who help manage the crowd and de-escalate tensions — during a student-organized demonstration in Adams Park. Each sign featured a different phrase: “Frustrated with gov’t corruption? Blame the billionaires” and “Fuming over grocery prices? Blame the billionaires.” The group also displayed QR codes directing people to the League of Women Voters website and a countdown to November’s midterm elections. The protesters said they were concerned about the influence of money on political campaigns and the political process. “We believe we need to get money out of politics so that we can really have better representation for the people,” Renkes said. “And that’s on both sides of the aisle.” Renkes also mentioned the Supreme Court decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, which struck down restrictions on certain independent political spending by corporations and unions. Renkes said the decision contributed to the influence of wealthy individuals and corporations in politics. “I can’t outspend Amazon,” she said, referring to the influence she believes corporations have in politics. The protesters packed up their signs at 10:45 a.m. Renkes said some members had been hesitant to protest in Wheaton because of the community’s political and religious demographics. Still, they considered the morning a success after receiving honks, thumbs-up gestures and messages from people passing by. Tuco Fuentes is an active member of the visibility brigade and also serves as its photographer. Throughout the event, he took photographs and videos that were shared on Indivisible DuPage’s Facebook and Instagram accounts. “I believe it is important for people to exercise their constitutional right to free expression, even when there are opposing opinions,” he said.
